collection of curiosities – part two

by Kaylah Stroup
Last week I shared some photos of my living room and today I’d like to share a few more of my favorite corner. I guess this is part two of my collection of oddities. The ones in my office are more natural oddities. Basically they’re all just things that used to be alive or part of something living. These ones weren’t. There are dentures, dental slides, a tooth shade guide, a model of the uterus with a baby inside, dental models, and a few other odds and ends. I even have my braces, and a mold of my own teeth after getting my braces removed.

oddities, dental models, medical models
dental collection, teeth, oddities
oddities

This cabinet is actually one of the very first things I started to decorate this apartment with. The same week I moved in my furnace died in the middle of the night. It was freezing and I had to call my new landlords right away. They’re a super sweet middle aged couple. As I was waiting for them to arrive it hit me, the thermostat is right above this weird little cabinet full of teeth and its basically the only thing in my living room right now. They’re going to think I am SO strange. The last thing I want to do is give them a bad impression of me, especially after I was so nervous they wouldn’t want me as a tenant because of my hair and tattoos. Hilariously enough the husband was actually pretty interested in my collection. After simply asking “are you a dental student?”, he complimented how it looked and revealed his brother used to make dental molds for a living. When he came back the next morning to work on the furnace yet again he said “your apartment is like an I Spy” and that my friends, is a high compliment to this lady!

Hope you’re having an awesome week!
xoxo

That is one wondrous collection! 😀 I totally adore the cat 'guarding' the cabinet! Did it always have a hat by the way?

Haha! Yep! He's a fancy cat! 😛

Dear Kaylah,

I saw these earlier today and immediately thought of you! I mean, spliced brain coasters?! You need these! 🙂

Haha that is awesome. Where do you get all of your anatomy figures and dental pieces? I'm imagining there must be some stories behind the collection 🙂

Kaylah April 27, 2015 - 1:48 pm

All over. Ebay, estate sales, people sometimes send them to me.

Is the blue tooth there as a pun? :p

Kaylah April 27, 2015 - 1:49 pm

Blue tooth? No pun. If you're referring to the one on the shade guide it's there because sometimes people have rotten teeth, I guess.

Oh… and my aunt had that same display cabinet back in the 60's, but hers was chock full of a great salt and pepper collection. Love seeing your original collection.

Idk if you've ever been to Rogers flea market (it's in Ohio so maybe), but when I went there last week I saw a set of model teeth and I thought of you!

It's really inspiring to see how your collections are displayed. There's a lot of finesse with displays, and I think you've perfected it. Sometimes collections can look cluttered or junky and this doesn't look that way at all! Love that cat too. <3

Nope, I've never actually heard of it. But it looks like it's only an hour and a half away. Maybe I'll have to take a trip out that way some weekend! 🙂

I think I saw your update on this on Instagram first, but I couldn't get over how similar your display case is to the "book case" I have at home. After really looking mine over it does appear to have had glass doors at one time. Too bad my granny isn't still around to ask about it 🙂

I love how you displayed your collection! It must be such a conversation started when people enter your home.
