I’ve been living in the city for around a year and half now, and honestly couldn’t imagine living anywhere else but there will always be a part of me that loves the country. Along those same lines, I love shooting abandoned buildings, and gritty city stuff but nature photography will probably always be my favorite. Last weekend I got the chance to get my knees dirty and shoot a few small critters, including a very tiny painted turtle, a newborn flying squirrel, and two feisty snakes.
Above is one of my dad’s flying squirrel babies. This is at about a week old, they were born on the 24th of April. It’s incredible to see one of these little things so…fresh. Not only are the membranes it uses to glide see-through but so is the majority of his body. It’s just so strange to imagine this tiny fur-less thing will grow into this. Nature is wild, y’all!
I already feel like I have my dream job. But I think if there was a dream job v2.0 for me, it would be to be an animal photographer. You know what I really want to do? I want to shoot for zooborns! Just baby animals in front of my camera all day, every day with lots of snuggles thrown in there too, of course!

Eeeeep! So much love for these photos right now 🙂 That second snake photo! WOW!!! One of my goals this month is to be able to get a photo of a venomous snake-Texas has an abundance so keeping my fingers crossed! Being a Zooborns photographer would be so much fun!
Thanks, Mindi! Good luck getting that snake photo! 🙂
I don't care what kind of animal it is, but a baby animal is ALWAYS adorable!
I'm with you there!
Omg I'm dying. Turtles are my favorite and these are almost too much to handle. I had one growing up so seeing them is always a soft spot for me. 🙂
Yeah, turtles are ridiculously cute, and to risk sounding like a total whack, isn't it amazing that they're even real? They're just so strange.
Oh goodness the baby squirrel is so weird and cute!
Isn't it!?
I've never seen a flying squirrel baby before, but it's so freaking cute. Does your dad raise them or do they just live in his yard?
He raises them. My whole life we basically always had an abundance of strange pets but flying squirrels have always been one of his favorites. I'm not sure off the top of my head how many he has right now, maybe six not including the babies? They're so so so cute!
Such beautiful photographs… your animal photos will always be some of my favourites.
Thank you so much, Elise! 🙂
Those are some fantastic, awesome photos! And I hear you, the few times I've entertained doing photography professionally I always end up back at "Maybe just photographing animals is a better idea.." I've been thinking about offering my services to a local shelter to help get better photos of the adoptable pets for awhile now. I should really give that idea a chance.
Also, could that tiny baby turtle be any cuter?!
Definitely! I've always thought photographing shelter animals would be awesome. I remember reading somewhere about how animals with better photos get adopted quicker – and it totally makes sense.
Amazing photos! That flying squirrel baby makes my heart melt.
Thanks, Paige! 🙂
That baby flying squirrel is the cutest thing ever! I've never seen one before, they don't live in the woods where I'm from. And it's nice that your parents don't stick to the typical pets 🙂
A lot people even in areas with them don't know they're around. They're pretty mysteriously little critters.
Seriously, that snake looks like he's posing for you so you get his good side. I love it!
Hahah. He does!
Love all these shots! Animal photography is on my dream job radar too – 2nd place only to underwater photography. 🙂 Also – baby flying squirrels! I love them! Coincidentally, my dad and step mom end up fostering an orphan or two every year. Their yard is full of them!
Yesss. I would love to even try underwater photography!
I am a biologist, and I love reptiles/amphibians as well as insects. But it's just frustating that everytime I go some place that it's perfect to see a snake or other rare reptile, I just don't see nothing to take a photo! But just today I saw a big grasshoper like I've never seen before.. but I just had my phone. Sometimes I wish my eyes could take photos 😀
I basically wish my eyes could take photos every single day of my life.
I would die happy if I could be an animal photographer for the rest of my life. It's just a shame I'm no photographer! Haha! I still enjoy photographing animals over everything else, though. These photos are all so beautiful, particularly the snake (2nd from the top). And the flying squirrel is adorable! I don't think I've ever seen a baby one before, so thanks for sharing these photos! 🙂
Haha!
Thanks! 🙂
These are such wonderful photos! I really adore the snake shot with it's tongue out – beautiful. And of course flying squirrel babies!!
Thanks, Kayly! 🙂
Oh those babies! Even the grumpy snake is voguing for your lens! Lovely pictures, Miss Squid!
