It’s the little things…

by Kaylah Stroup
A few years back I had a little series on the blog called “It’s the little things…” where I just shared little things that made me happy. It was mostly pictures of my cats back then… I hadn’t posted anything related to that series for a while so when I cleaned up all the tags I use at the beginning of the year that was one that got deleted. In an effort to share more of my daily life, and take more photos of just everyday things I’m bringing that tag back.

These photos were taken earlier in the week. Jeff and I had plans to go to the mall but when he arrived at my door he pointed toward the sky and said “What do you think? Wanna go to watch the sunset and take pictures?” Of course, I did! I would I ran upstairs, grabbed my camera and off we headed to the frozen wonderland that is Lake Erie this time of the year.
Within minutes my fingers ached because they were so cold but we still stayed and shot.  I’m so very thankful to have found someone who enjoys spur of the moment adventures just as much as I do, and someone who will voluntarily go to the freezing cold beach just to get a few shots. We’re a pretty awesome team. I want a lifetime of moments like this with him.

In the car on the ride home from the mall this night, I panicked. My memory doesn’t seem to be that great anymore, or at least I feel like I’m having trouble remembering things. “I can’t think of any memories that don’t have a photo attached” I cried. Maybe it’s just because I take SO many photos but I have to think pretty hard to think of moments where I don’t have at least one photo tucked away somewhere that is related to it.

The next day Jeff said something along the lines of “I had a lot of fun yesterday!” My response was “I don’t remember what we did…?” A few minutes passed before I remembered what had happened in the car the night previous. We both had a good chuckle about the irony of that.

I don’t know if my memory is getting foggy or if I have unrealistic expectations and just feel like I should remember every single thing but hopefully this series will help me feel a bit more at ease. Evenings like this one I never want to forget.
xoxo

Beautiful, quiet, strange, like at the end of the world…so far away!
Reflexion about photos and memories makes me smile because sometimes I think like that! I hope we are normal 😉

That's exactly why I love the beach in the winter. It's such a strange place.

Love these photos. I know what you mean about not remembering things without photos. I always worry that Im not going to remember all the little moments that mean so much but didn't need photos or where I was just in the moment. I think that's just life though, we're not going to be able to remember everything, but then it's always nice to be reminded of something you thought you'd forgotten.

Very true. It's just stressful because you never really know how much other people are remembering so I always think the worst, like maybe I'm the only one who can't remember this or that.

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad to hear it's not just me! My memories are adrift in a sea of mental fog. They only become clear at random, it seems, and are always fragmented.

Exactly!!!

Don't worry, I am very forgetful too, and can usually never remember what I did the day before, let alone last week! I think that's why I love taking photos so much, so I don't forget the little moments in life. This sounds like the perfect little evening you guys spent together 🙂

Kaylah February 2, 2015 - 1:51 pm

Yep, definitely glad I take so many photos! Might be why I really like to collect little souvenirs too!

I think a reason could be that you do take so many pictures, and when you attach pictures to a moment, it becomes stronger in your memory. That's why it's so easy to remember all the moments you've captured in picture form! I love that you shared this little bit, though. It sounds like you and Jeff have a great relationship. 🙂

I really love the idea of this series. What a beautiful experience, spontaneous moments such as those are my very favourite. Your photos are just breathtaking. And I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one who thinks their memory is failing them at such a young age!

Thank you!!

I find myself having a terrible memory as my life goes on as well. It's alarming. I don't take anywhere near as many photos as you do, but it's definitely something I struggle with. Writing and journaling a lot helps as well!

Kaylah February 2, 2015 - 1:53 pm

Glad you've found something that helps you out! Writing and journaling aren't my cup of tea but photos definitely are.

These kind of posts are my favorite. They're a nice little glimpse into your life and it makes me happy to see what is making other people happy. Perhaps that sounds a bit lame but it's true. Happiness is contagious, right?

I'm a firm believer that winter fogs the brain a little bit – summer brings a bit more clarity (and better memory!) so don't worry about it! 😉

I love this post, it's so genuine.
It's scary and sad to be reminded of something you thought you'd never forget, but that's also what is kind of amazing about keeping a blog and the tools that allow us to hold on to these memories.
