found up in hopes that I’d maybe find enough to take a neat picture. By the time I was done, maybe an hour and a half
later, I had found fifty lighters total. I decided to stash them away in my car and continue collecting them throughout the entire summer. I was curious how many I’d find and I, of course, wanted to take a nice big color order photo of them all together.
Well, I collected a total of 199 lighters. In those seven months I visited the beach maybe twice a month or so which really isn’t very often for me at all. I can’t even imagine how many I would have found if I went more often. After I cleaned up the lighters I headed to the other side of the beach to shoot some photos only to find at least eight more on the walk.
It’s crazy to me how much litter washes up the beach. While the amount of lighters and trash I pick up is shocking it’s nothing compared to everything else that makes it way onto the sand. I was particularly taken aback on the day I went to lay out my lighters for the above photos. SO. MUCH. PLASTIC. It’s so colorful, it was weren’t absolutely disgusting it might kind of be pretty.

wow, so many?! it's almost as if someone wanted someone to find them. the photo's you made with it are beautiful!
Thanks! 🙂
Crazy how much you can find on the beach!!
Right?!
That "Live a Little, Have an Orgasm" one is perfect. Mostly because I read it thinking it would be one of those love/inspiration quotes they put on water bottles and things. (On second thought maybe I do want a water bottle that says that…)
Hahaha!
I'm such a scaredy cat when it comes to fire and lighters, but I love the photos that you took. The colors stand out beautifully!
It's unfortunate that all these things are washed up from the ocean and that things like the south pacific garbage patch exist. 🙁

You're afraid of lighters? That's interesting, I've never heard of anyone being afraid of lighters before. Any specific reason why?
On a completely unrelated note, I saw this and thought of you:http://www.boredpanda.com/mushroom-growth-timelapse-gifs/
Those are so awesome!
Wow…just wow. I'm pretty speechless. There's beauty in this, but in such a horrible way. It reminds me of that collection of albatross photos involving plastic; I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. It just shows what TRASH we are.
It's seriously crazy how much stuff you find on that beach! 😀
Gosh, that's a lot of trash!
That GI-Joe looks like he meant to wash up on the beach. It's all part of the mission, boys! Legs or no, I bet if you put him down and turned your back for a second, he'd keep exploring.
omg, this is lovely. it's not lovely how much trash is on the beach, but instead what's lovely is what you've done with it. you've found beauty in the ugly. xo
so awesome
There is something so aesthetically pleasing about all those coloured lighters, I am glad you picked them up. But something has to be said for the amount of rubbish that constantly washes up on the beach, yuk!

People are gross who just dump rubbish like this! Lucky you made something beautiful out of something horrid!x
These are some of my favorite photos! My OCD definitely approves of the lighters. (:
It's shocking how many lighters you found, and it does make you think how much rubbish is in our oceans all around the world. That said, your photos of beach trash are always so beautiful, and this post is no exception! 🙂
I absolutely love the photo taken from father back, at first glance it looks like a generic shot of the beach, but then bam! Rainbow! Oh my gosh, it is shocking how much trash there is on the beach, I had no idea it was that much!
It's amazing how these ugly little plastic things can come together to create something so beautiful. I love these shots. It reminds me of the artist Andy Goldsworthy, except it's not quite ephemeral since it's plastic, haha!
Sometimes I go to the beach to scavenger hunt… but there is nowhere near this much. I really have to look hard. We're on the north shore of Lake Erie…. a lot of dead fish though… so I guess we get that instead.
Very pretty when they are lined up like that but utterly disgraceful that there is that amount of litter.
Beautiful colorful picture and I like your picture far to see where you haveput your lighters.
The next time, I think you have the materials to take another one with plastic bottles's corks!
Crazy how much gets washed up. Love the photos though!
It's amazing the amount of rubbish which gets washed up and left by people on the beach, but you've taken something which is a big issue for marine life and turned it into art, and what a brilliant way to highlight the amount of things you can find on the beach. Every time I go to my local beach I always find lots of plastic packaging, lighters as you've found and various pieces which have washed ashore – it makes you think about packaging, or at least it does for me! This is a great post, and the ordered colour photos look amazing. – Tasha xxx
Wow. Definitely both beautiful and appalling!

I would have never thought lighters would be something people discard on a regular basis. How cool though that you collected them. I love the photos you took of them. The colors! Brighten the mood on a blistering cold early January morning for sure:)
What are you going to do with them now?
Your photos are amazing, but it's so sad that people throw so much rubbish on the beach!
Hope you are well!
