first hike of the spring // on film

by Kaylah Stroup
The first few family hikes of spring are always my favorite. It’s magical watching everything coming back to life. New plants working their way up through the leaves and debris from last fall. Birds chirping and my favorite spring noise, peepers! This year it’s a little bit more special than normal since I’m now a city girl. There are tons of parks surrounding the area I live in but they’re fairly busy with other people also trying to escape the hustle and bustle. Last week I took a trip out to my parents house for a hike and a cookout. As much as I’m loving and adapting well to city life, it felt really nice to escape for a few hours.

And one more, of a snaggle toothed puppy!

Aw love the little snaggle toothed pup! I've been trying to get a hike in once a week. I love seeing how everything is really starting to come alive now that spring is in full bloom!

Beautiful photos! I love hikes out into the wilderness (or as close to the wilderness as one can get!) and I'm going to visit my parents and sister tomorrow so hopefully I will get to go for a beautiful hike too. The picture of the amazing leaves is my favourite. I love when the leaves change 🙂

Lovely photos! I also love being able to compare them to last year's first hike.

I love film so much. It's got such a good feel to it when you use it and see what comes out! It's so exciting to see the end result and you can't chimp it and make sure what you've got is perfect. You get one chance! I love it. And that dog in the last picture melted my heart! <3

Hooray for film! Beautiful photos as always. I love the moods of your photos the best… these are peaceful, quiet, and I love the colour tones. Thanks for sharing.

Haha, my pup has the same snaggle tooth grin when she's concentrating. ;p Does your pup get to join you when you go hiking or is he a bit young yet?

Kaylah April 22, 2014 - 3:27 pm

I think he's still a little young. Rather, I just don't know how he'd do off leash like Crum. I've never let him loose anywhere that wasn't fenced in so I'm nervous he'd just run. I think next time I'm at my parents (out of the city, where cars aren't an issue) I'm going to let him loose to see how he does. I really really want to take him hiking though.

Some beautiful photos 🙂 I've always wanted to be able to go for a hike but sadly there's not really anywhere to go near where I live. I must try to find somewhere!

what kind of camera would you suggest to someone new to photography?

Kaylah April 22, 2014 - 3:26 pm

What kind are you looking for – digital or film? If you're looking for a nice film camera, I highly recommend the Pentax K1000, it's an excellent camera.

A gorgeous pup! If not quite pup size 😉
It's difficult to know when dogs are ready to be let of the lead (stalking an above comment…) I never braved in with the dogs we had in my childhood.

I also have a thing for city/nature balance. I have lived in a city for 7 years, but for the first 5 I took regular trips to see my parents who lived in the middle of nowhere. Now I live across the country from them and don't have a place like that to visit 🙁 I definitely start to feel antsy if I stay in the city too long.
