eating fresh with HelloFresh + Freshpet

by Kaylah Stroup

Thank you Freshpet for sponsoring this post. Check out Freshpet refrigerated pet food, made with fresh, all natural ingredients and no artificial preservatives, truly making a difference you can see and your pet will feel!

If you’ve been following The Dainty Squid for some time you may recall how over the past three years I’ve shed my title of ‘picky eater’. I was previously someone who literally only ate because they had to. I didn’t enjoy food, and I certainly didn’t like cooking. Jeff changed me. He learned all the things I did like and slowly introduced me to other things he thought we similar enough that I might like. His patience showed me that maybe I wasn’t actually a picky eater after all.

These days I am all about trying new foods. I don’t really think there is anything I wouldn’t try, at least a few times. This new-found love of food meant I tried really, really hard to like cooking. The thing is I’m not good at it. Let me rephrase that, I’m decent at cooking but I’m bad at grocery shopping, and I have a really hard time choosing what to make. I excel at browsing food blogs but can never actually decide on what to make. This leads to us, more often than not, going out to eat or just eating a freezer pizza.

Jeff and I both really love to cook though. Before we moved in together we talked all the time about how living together would change our eating habits but alas, they might be even worse. Enter HelloFresh! When this opportunity arose I couldn’t jump fast enough…

HelloFresh delivers step-by-step recipes and all the fresh ingredients you need to make them. They offer plans for families of two or four and have vegetarian based meals as well as ones with meat and fish. HelloFresh covering the shopping, planning and delivery for you means you can actually take the time to enjoy cooking.

We are currently two and a half weeks in to a month long journey of eating better thanks to HelloFresh, and honestly, couldn’t be happier. After Jeff gets home from work in the evening the last thing either of us wants to do is head into the kitchen but knowing that there is fresh food waiting to be cooked up has been an awesome motivation. Each one of their recipes take just around a half hour so there are basically no excuses. We have been having such a blast spending time in the kitchen together. One of my favorite things about this whole experience so far is that the recipes have been things we probably wouldn’t have chosen on our own. (You guys, I ate shrimp and it was AMAZING.)

Klaus is also embarking on this month long journey to eat better along with us. I’ve switched out his old food for Freshpet. My first impression? This stuff smells amazing. It’s kind of amazing to be able to feed him something that I honestly wouldn’t mind eating myself. It smells that tasty! His first impression? Well, it was gone in a matter of seconds. That boy is always excited about food but I’ve never seen him enjoy it this much.

Freshpet is real, all-natural pet food. They don’t use any additives or preservatives. It just needs to be refrigerated. They don’t use pre-processed meat powders, ‘chicken meals’ or by-products – just real meat as the #1 ingredient. I feel really good feeding this to him.

The kitties were also super interested in his new food. You spotted Squid in the photo below, right? Hehe! Freshpet makes a few different cats foods as well so I’m thinking we’ll have to check those out for them! I will definitely update you in part two of this series if the kitties try out some Freshpet.

So now for the part I’m sure you’ve been waiting for –Β  a giveaway! Between now and October 16th, you have a shot to win one of ten free HelloFresh boxes and $39 worth of Freshpet manufacturer coupons! Winners will be randomly selected and notified by CLEVER by October 17, 2017. Good luck!!

I have tried several of the delivery services. HelloFresh is the only one I have not tried. I would love to! They are amazing for trying new things and for quick weeknight meals!

I don’t have a pet right now but my parents used FreshPet for they cat. He lived to be 18 years old, he passed a month ago, and was in great health most of his life due to the highest quality food they could give him. Makes a HUGE difference!

If you have trouble deciding what to make, try looking at blogs that give you weekly meal plans. You can do all the recipes or just one or two nights. πŸ˜‰ 3 sites I like for this are:
Two Peas and their Pod: https://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/?s=weekly+meal+plan

Table for Two: https://www.tablefortwoblog.com/category/weekly-meal-plan/

And last, Lexi’s Clean Kitchen: https://lexiscleankitchen.com/category/meal-plans/

Thank you so much for the links! I didn’t realize anyone did stuff like that. I’ll certainly look into those.

I love how you are using your pets for product placement! XD I’ve never heard of Freshpet, but it sounds pretty interesting. I always want to give my cat higher quality foods, but she is a pretty picky eater.

Kaylah October 11, 2017 - 7:57 pm

Haha! Well, they gotta earn their keep somehow. πŸ˜›

FreshPet definitely would be worth looking into! Some Targets even stock it and you can buy individual servings so if even if she doesn’t like it you’re not out a bunch of money.

I have been thinking about trying Hello Fresh. I hate grocery shopping and every day I get home I draw a blank about making a meal. This sounds like it would help me out a lot. I have been supplementing my dry dog food with homemade dog food since my dog recently developed some teeth issues. Fresh pet food is where it is at. I have noticed a huge difference in him since I started feeding him fresh food. I am sure Klaus is loving you for it too!

Kaylah October 11, 2017 - 8:01 pm

SAME! It’s so much easier for us to just be given the correct amount of ingredients and directions on how to make the food. It honestly does just make it so much more enjoyable. πŸ™‚

I’m so curious about these food subscription boxes. My partner and I are vegan and we have three cats, so these look like great options for us!

This would be so great to try! I’m pregnant and due this month and have zero motivation to plan meals and grocery shop. Having the ingredients delivered and just having to cook might actually get me to eat healthy instead of just getting fast food 😳

Kaylah October 12, 2017 - 9:13 am

Good luck! (and congrats!!)

This sounds awesome! It’s definitely a lot more fun to cook when you know you have all the ingredients, and an awesome recipe to go along with it. I never heard of the pet food version, I want to look into that!

I think both me and my dog would love HelloFresh and FreshPet!

I love meal subscription boxes! I have tried them all, haha. I am also the worst at picking what to eat so after getting tired of eating the same rotation of meals every week, my husband and I love not having to think of 3 meals each week! Freshpet sounds interesting – I will definitely check it out for my dog!

Carly Williams October 12, 2017 - 1:02 pm

I love that they both offer products I can feel good about serving to my entire family, including the dog!

Kait October 12, 2017 - 1:53 pm

I’ve been wanting to try HelloFresh but I’m honestly wanting to get FreshPet first because our cats live better lives than we do! Haha!

Marisa October 13, 2017 - 6:19 pm

I’ve tried Blue Apron but never Hello Fresh, would love to try.

Sam October 14, 2017 - 10:21 am

You had me at ‘food’. I love cooking and I love the idea of someone sending me ingredients and a recipe – the hardest part about adulting is definitely deciding on what to cook/eat every.single.day. I mean, bills are annoying but food…. urgh! I will have to see if there is a UK alternative!!

This! Our dining out budget is crazy because neither of us can think of what to make! So often I run to the grocery store with something in mind, just to forget an ingredient. I’ve tried Blue Apron, and the convenience is wonderful but I found the meals to have higher calories and too meat focused. Would you say HelloFresh is more plant based?

Kaylah October 17, 2017 - 9:50 am

Not really, each meal usually has a main thing that is meat. I enjoy it. It’s helping me learn to cook meat – which is something that has always freaked me out. If you’d rather not have so much meat you could always choose their vegetarian meals!

Kerri October 16, 2017 - 10:32 am

I’ve always wanted to try both HelloFresh & Freshpet!
