Bradstreet’s Landing

by Kaylah Stroup August 17, 2015
my !

I know I’m always blogging about beach trash, and what I find is no exaggeration but I would really hate for anyone to think that’s what all of Cleveland’s beaches look like. My favorite trash beach is a mess. I have no idea what it is about that spot. It must just be the location, that’s where the tide brings in the most garbage. That little spot aside, we have some really nice beaches!

One of the very first spots I fell in love with here was Bradstreet’s Landing. Mickey and I actually discovered it shortly before I moved to Lakewood. It is my absolute favorite spot to look for beach glass. Although it’s not a secret spot by any means for the longest time I refused to name it because I wanted it all to myself. When I was living in Lakewood I was there at least twice a week. Sometimes Jeff and I would even grab donuts, coffee, and chocolate milk and spend the morning there. I haven’t been picking up beach glass as often lately and had kind of forgotten just how much I love this little beach. I’ve been meaning to share more about the things I love in Cleveland and although this one is a tiny bit outside the city (around twenty minutes) it definitely deserves to be named!

Coming from Geneva beaches I was used to finding maybe three or four pieces of beach glass per trip. Bradstreet’s Landing blew my mind. You can sit down in one spot, run your hand over the small pebbles, and expose five to ten glistening pieces of glass. There’s barely any trash, it’s rare that more than a handful of people are there, and there’s almost always a big log to sit down and relax on.

Bradstreet’s Landing should probably be on your itinerary if you’re in the area and like looking for beach glass! Make sure to say hi if you see me and my obnoxiously bright hair hunkered down looking for treasure!

It’s the little things…

by Kaylah Stroup February 23, 2015
At the beginning of last week Jeff text me about how he was so sick of the winter and was dying to go shoot photos. I replied “ditto! let’s get out” assuming that would I mean I would have to grudgingly bundle up and head out into the negative temperatures for a few hours. His response was “let’s go on a trip!” Two days later we’re in the car heading down to Virginia, he had booked us a hotel in Norfolk.

It was supposed to be an escape from the cold but the day previous to our arrival Norfolk had been hit with a pretty intense snow storm. They apparently weren’t too prepared, and the roads were kind of awful so after finding macarons and eating a burger we retired to our hotel room fairly early. As cold as it was there it was still an improvement and we were both excited to escape our city for a bit. While Cleveland was experiencing temperatures as low as -25, Norfolk was around 20 degrees.

The next morning we woke up before the sun so we could hurry down to the beach and watch it rise over the ocean. It was absolutely freezing but well worth it for the sight. This is one of those times where I’m not super pumped about my photos but once I get over the initial “I could have shot that better” I know I’ll be really happy I have them. Watching the sun rise and set with Jeff is one of my all time favorite things. It never fails to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Funny story – For our first date I suggested we watch the sun rise together. We agreed upon a place, time, and date. I woke up super early that morning to make sure I looked extra cute, bundled up and headed to the beach. Nearly a half hour after the sun rose I realized this butthead wasn’t going to show up. I played it cool and texted him something along the lines of “Hey, you didn’t show! Hope you’re okay and nothing happened!” He text me back almost instantly. He had overslept and my text woke him up. We finally met up later that day but I’m probably never going to let him live that down.

I was pretty excited to find coral on the beach. Lake Erie doesn’t really have many interesting things that wash up on the beach, I mean if you exclude giant water bugs and trash, so even frozen coral is intriguing to me. I’m also a fan of sea foam. It was killing me that it was so cold there, I wanted to stick my hands in it so badly.

Back in Ohio, I’m still hating winter just as much as before we left for our quick trip but it was a great escape, even if it wasn’t a warm one.

Two posts into my “the little things” series and both include Jeff and a sun setting or rising on the beach. Whoops!

snowy marina

by Kaylah Stroup January 20, 2015
Winter seems to finally have really hit in Cleveland. We held out a while but finally started getting snow. These last two weeks or so have been pretty brutal; below freezing temperatures, and some decent accumulation. My first thought every first big snow is “it’s time to go to the beach!”

I knew the beach I usually go to to do outfit photos, and collect trash from probably wouldn’t be too great, at least not this early in the winter so I ventured out of my side of town and over to the east side.  I wasn’t a hundred percent sure where to go but I knew there were marinas over there. Long story short I pulled into a park to turn around, and got my car stuck. My poor little VW Golf is pretty horrible in the snow, combine that with tires that are basically just for show, being downhill, and a warmish day where spinning my tires just turned the snow into ice. I wasn’t stuck for long before I realized I had no chance of getting out on my own and called Jason . We spent over an hour trying to work my car out before crossing our fingers, and just gunning it through the grass toward the sidewalk. It was kind of a fun little adventure. Things like that are way easier to look at from the bright side when you have friends who are always willing to come rescue you from stupid situations.

Anyway, I fiiinally made my way to the marina. It was just as beautiful and other worldly as I’d hoped. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of visiting the lake in the winter. I feel lucky to live so incredibly close to the water. You guys, my new apartment is a quick bike ride from my favorite beach. I cannot wait til it’s warmer out.

Like I mentioned, these were taken on a warmer day so a lot of the ice had already begun to melt. Since I’ve never actually been to this marina when there wasn’t snow it was kind of hard to traverse. With everything covered in snow I had to be extra careful to not take a wrong step.  I’m looking forward to going back when the temperatures drop real low again and I can climb around a little bit more confidently.

This year I…

by Kaylah Stroup December 29, 2014
became a city girl!
got a cozy little place to call my own.

traveled more than I’ve ever traveled before.
fell madly in love.
spent more money on photobooth pictures than I want to think about + managed to convince the lead singer of my favorite band to get in a photobooth with me.
made one of my best purchases ever.
explored oodles of forgotten structures.
dyed my hair a bunch of beautiful colors.
saw my city from vantage points most will never experience, some high…
and others low…
above photo by Jeff
collected more and more plants.
watched the sun rise in a ghost town in the middle of the desert.
rode a jackalope.

above photo by Mickey.
ate more macarons than I’ll admit to.

saw wild horses for the first time ever.
ran into dinosaurs just about everywhere I traveled.
made pretty pictures from trash.
picked up a relaxing new hobby.
 rappelled in a cave!
 above photo by Jeff
slept in a wigwam, more than once.
swam in the ocean in February.
above photo by Mickey.
started to get the hang of night photography.

And oh so much more!

This is one of the few dresses that isn’t black and white striped that managed to survive my most recent closet clean out. (Shop my closet sale goes live tomorrow! Eeee!) My style has changed so drastically over the past few years. It’s funny because it happens so slowly that I don’t really even realize it’s happening until one day nearly everything in my closet just isn’t me anymore or is something I no longer can figure out how to style.

That’s actually one of the main reasons I like to document my outfits, to watch my style evolve. Things I used to wear still look cute to me, but they no longer feel right on me. I tried this dress on with a few different cardigans, tights, and shoe combos before deciding on this one because it just felt good.

early 2013 // late 2013 // 2014

This outfit is cute but still super practical, which is all that I care about anymore. I was able to climb around on the drift wood because of my palladium boots, which surprisingly look awesome with a dress! Dresses and boots paired together are kind of a new thing for me. This was probably the very first time ever that I have been ecstatic about how they looked together. The dress is cute and feminine but long enough that I don’t have to worry about people seeing my butt while climbing around and picking up things for my found on the beach project. Plus the color is the best, which probably is what really accounts for it’s lengthy stay in my wardrobe.
Anyway, enough rambling about personal style. Hope you’re having an excellent Tuesday!

xoxo

PS. Happy first day of autumn!
