10 things making me smile

by Kaylah Stroup May 10, 2017

This is a little bit different than my normal ‘10 things making me smile‘ post because it’s all photos of Professor. Back at the end of February I made him his own instagram account, @fessermakesfaces, so that I wasn’t constantly posting photos of him on my regular account. I thought I’d just post them here and there, whenever I had them, but it ended up becoming something that I specifically took photos for. He’s supremely photogenic, or maybe unphotogenic and that’s what makes it so good. Either way, I have an abundance of funny photos of my little toasted marshmallow that I want to share here for you today.

Arg!

I just can’t get enough. Sometimes I think about the fact that I almost didn’t adopt him and it seems so ridiculous. I didn’t want another cat, especially one that I thought would have long hair. He was so fluffy as a kitten. He’s the weirdest cat I’ve ever met, constantly doing something that makes me smile. I hope that even though you’ll probably never meet him these photos, that convey his personality so well, make you smile as well.

If you’d like to see more of this wild little animal, on a daily basis, be sure to follow his instagram account.

Laurel Grove Cemetery

by Kaylah Stroup May 9, 2017

laurel grove cemetery, savannah, georgia, cemetery

You guys! I finally, finally, fiiiiinally have the last post from November’s trip to Savannah ready to go. I essentially shot nothing but photos of cemeteries which, tooting my own horn here, I think I’m pretty good at. I’ve blogged about it twice already how when I got home I wasn’t really happy with any of the photos. Slowly but surely, cemetery by cemetery, I’ve been editing them and falling in love. These ones from Laurel Grove Cemetery are the last of the photos. Ideally, I’d like to say I’ve saved the best for last but I think these are a happy medium, not my favorites but not the worst. I’m just happy to have saved some photos from one of my favorite places.

My first visit to Laurel Grove Cemetery was back in early 2014. I didn’t spend very much time there but I was instantly enamored. I was SO excited to get back and shoot it properly this last visit. I had two things working against me though. The super bright sunshine for one. Just like at Bonaventure, the sun and the huge trees created an absolute mess of uneven light. Secondly, I realized that my camera was malfunctioning. The shutter isn’t working properly so when it’s bright and the shutter needs to open and close super quickly… it just doesn’t. The result is a large black area in the corner of the frame. I first noticed this issue while shooting these photos so instead of worrying about getting great shots I was stressing about what in the heck was wrong with my camera. In some of the shots it’s very obvious and just looks like kooky editing but in a lot of the other shots, I feel like it kind of works. The sun and my funky shutter were my sources of frustration but with a little bit of patience in lightroom I feel fairly confident that they were salvaged.

cemetery, headstone, savannah, laurel grove laurel grove cemetery, savannah, georgia, cemetery, headstone, graveyard spanish moss, cemetery, laurel grove, savannah

Even though I so clearly struggled with all the photos I got from this trip I still really do think Savannah has some of the most beautiful cemeteries. That spanish moss just gets me every time. I can’t look at these photos without feeling a little pang of homesickness. I’m sure I’m not the only one to get this feeling, the yearning for somewhere that you’ve been before. Somewhere that isn’t home but still holds a special place in your heart for one reason or another. I’m sure there is some word in another language that doesn’t translate to English that explains this feeling. Whatever it is, these photos make me feel it.

project 365 : days 121 – 127

by Kaylah Stroup May 8, 2017

121 : 365 Beach finds for the day. I’m in love with that piece of pottery in the last photo. Those are always a favorite of mine to find. I also really love the shot below, taken right when the water washed into my little arrangement.

beach glass arrangement, lake erie, beach glass, cleveland army man, flotsam army

122 : 365 An outtake from the little photoshoot for my ‘how to clean up hair dye messes‘ post. I spent so long trying to get one of the animals to go lay on my pillow but it just wasn’t happening. I like Professor’s stupid face in this shot though. He’s such a silly little thing. Klaus’s posture kind of makes it look like Professor said something really mean to him.

Another photo from Tuesday. Jeff picked up sushi on his way home from work. You guys, it blows my mind that a couple of years ago I was the pickiest eater I had ever met and now one of my favorite foods is eel. I could eat sushi every single day and not get sick of it.

123 : 365 I love how the light filters in through the blinds here. I truly love every corner of this apartment.

124 : 365 My “uh-oh I haven’t taken a photo yet today, better snap one of a plant before it gets dark outside” photo. It was a busy day. We booked a spur of the moment vacation, I worked at the flower shop then we got tacos with friends.

125 : 365 Incense and cactus. I’ve had that stupid shark trash can for probably six years and I still crack up over it. Easily one of the best things I have EVER found at a thrift store.

126 : 365 I took a quick trip to the beach to check out the lake since it was stormy. It was SO cold, and the waves were just wild! Most of the beach had been swallowed up by water. I also created a hashtag for my long exposure ghostly

I also created a hashtag for my long exposure ghostly self portraits – #ghostkaylah. Hopefully that’ll be a nice little push to take more of those. I think they’re really rad.

how to clean up hair dye messes

by Kaylah Stroup May 4, 2017

clean hair dye off sink

This idea for this post popped into my head when I was dyeing my hair last week and accidently flung a huge green glob of dye onto my beautiful, bright white bathroom floor. Totally not a big deal at all though! Coincidentally a few days after starting this draft I got a string of comments from people wanting to know how to clean up hair dye. After all these years I have cleaning up my hair dye messes down to a science. There are tons of different methods and products you could use but these are what I’ve come to trust.

Before you start –

Remove your rugs, and prepare your surfaces. When Jeff and I moved into together I was excited to get all his bright white towels. I got rid of most of my old ones but kept a handful just for when I dye my hair. I lay two on the floor since for some reason I always end up flinging dye down there. Always make sure to check your feet before stepping off the towels too! I recommend using old towels for this. Dye is definitely not easy to get out of towels when directly applied to the fabric.

I place a lap desk in the sink and then cover that with another old towel. I’m a huge fan of my lap desk, as you can see it gets a lot of use. I eat on it, I paint my nails on it, it’s great for writing on, and it makes the perfect surface to set up a hair dye station. Having a flat surface for my tubs of dye to rest on helps minimize the mess since they aren’t falling all over the place. Plus clean up is super simple, you just have to remove the towel and throw it in the wash.

Clean up time –

As an A+ procrastinator, I know the feeling of “I’ll get that later” all too well but when it comes to cleaning up hair dye sooner really is better. It’s so much easier if you get it cleaned up as soon as you’re done dyeing your hair but fret not, even if you catch a stain a month later it’s still possible to remove it!

My method of clean up is to wipe up any globs of dye up with toilet paper. Take care not to smear the dye around very much, you don’t want an even larger area to clean. Then I spray on some bleach based cleaner, let it sit a few minutes, then wipe clean with a damp rag. I’m actually a huge fan of Target brand cleaner. It works just as well as any brand name. Depending on the color, it normally takes a few applications to get the dye completely up.

If that doesn’t work or isn’t getting it all up, I follow with Bar Keepers Friend. This is my mom’s favorite cleaning product, and I understand why. This stuff is like magic when it comes to cleaning up messes. It works so well that I don’t recommend buying generic or same thing but different brand. Bar Keepers Friend all the way!

Simply wet the stained area, sprinkle a little Bar Keepers Friend on top, let it sit for a few minutes and scrub it off with a sponge. If the area hasn’t come 100% clean simply repeat the process.

This seems fairly obvious but I highly, highly recommend rinsing the dye out of your hair in the kitchen sink. There will be barely any clean up compared to the crime scene that is a shower after rinsing out dye.

Staying on top of it –

If you’re dyeing your hair bright unnatural colors, chances are when you rinse your hair is never going to run completely clear which means you’re always adding a tiny bit of color to your shower or tub. In the past I just cleaned, probably not as often as I should have, with the bleach cleaner mentioned above. When I moved into this apartment with it’s freshly refinished white claw foot tub I was given specific instructions on what I could and could not do in the tub. One of the things on prohibited list was bleach based cleaners.

Now instead of my not so frequent bleach cleaning, I clean weekly with Mrs. Meyer’s tub and tile cleaner to keep everything bright, and clean. It gets the job done, and it smells SO nice. I could seriously write a whole post about how much I love Mrs. Meyer’s products. This is the cheesiest sentence I’ve ever written on this blog but Mrs. Meyer’s products make cleaning fun, and I’m not even getting paid to say that! I truly, truly LOVE everything Mrs. Meyer’s I’ve ever tried.

satin pillowcase

The other big hair dye clean up question I get is how to stop staining on clothing, hands, pillowcases, etc. Using a high-quality dye is definitely going to help that. Cheap dye stains basically everything but your hair. I always, always, alwaaaays recommend Punky Colours. I never really have any issues with staining after the first two or three days after dyeing. I don’t really think there is any way to stop that though. I simply make sure not to wear white or other light colored tops those first few days.

I’ve never had any issues with staining pillowcases except in rare instances that I’ve gone to bed with wet hair. I did recently switch to a satin pillowcase since I had heard such great things about them and how good they are for your skin and hair. I can’t say enough nice things about it. It basically put an end to my bed head. I wake up with normal looking bangs, not ones that stick straight up! I bought mine in black so that it’d match any bedding I bought in the future. If you’re having issues with pillowcase staining getting one of these could be a two for one deal – no stains + nicer hair in the morning!

As for washing out stains on clothing, and bedding I honestly don’t do anything special. I just wash my clothes as normal. I don’t even have a fancy detergent to recommend to you because I just buy whatever smells the best when I run out. The only items that have stains are those that dye has been applied to specifically, like when a big glob hits the towel on the floor. I do always add Borax to my laundry which might help with removing any color rubbed off onto clothing and bedding.

Good luck! If you have any questions about cleaning up hair dye or about dyeing hair in general, just let me know!

abandoned trailer park

by Kaylah Stroup May 3, 2017

The abandoned trailer park is easily one of my most blogged about places. Since discovering it back in March of 2015 its made its way on to the blog a total of five times previous to this. All those posts are linked at the bottom of this one. Normally I’d hesitate to post yet another photo set from here but once again my excuse is that I feel like the photos are completely different than the previous times. Also, I got FOUR ticks on this little excursion so you’re going to look at my darn photos. Okay? Okay!

On Easter I saw on Allie from The Only Living Girl in New York was in town. I was bummed out that she hadn’t contacted me and wrongly assumed she probably hated me. Totally logical, right? With a little encouragement from Jeff I reached out to see if she was free the next day. I wasn’t really expecting to get to see her because I know how family holiday plans can be super crazy. So when she responded yes with an abundance of exclamation points I was super stoked… and super nervous.

We planned out an awesome day starting at one of my favorite little hole in the wall breakfast spots. The rest of the day from there was a series of let downs. I have a huge list of abandoned buildings around the area so I was positive I’d be able to show Allie and her friend, Jean-Marie, lots really interesting spots. We got shot down at every single place in a seriously bizarre number of ways. We covered a lot of ground that morning with absolutely zero luck.

We were just about to call it quits but luckily a solid lunch saved that day. After eating we came to the decision that driving to the trailer park could possibly redeem the whole day. Spoiler alert: it did.

green trailer, abandoned, overgrown

faces everywhere,

Do you see the face in the photo above?

abandoned books,

I was too nervous to go into this cabin when I discovered it on our last visit because I just got the weird vibe that someone lived there. It was arranged a bit differently on this most recent visit, and didn’t hold that same energy. Such a funny little set up.

abandoned, urbex, trailers, abandoned trailer park

yellow kitchen, abandoned, abandonedment

Despite my numerous previous visits I still found new things to photograph. If anything, I think I saw more this time to shoot than ever before. The first few cabins we entered were just full of personal items. Things always make a location so much more interesting, and relatable. I was particularly taken by the dusty old books shown above. They were so filthy. I’ve seriously never seen anything like it. When I showed Jeff my photos from the day he commented that they look like something from the set of a movie of an ‘abandoned’ location, not something you’d actually see in an abandoned home. I couldn’t agree more.

I didn’t really notice the titles of the books while I was shooting a thousand photos of them but while I was editing I spotted the title Hearse Class Male, which made me giggle. I was curious what it might be about so I looked it up. Amazon oddly enough didn’t have a description but they do have a photo of the cover. The quote on the cover reads “The blonde smiled at Liddell. ‘I’ll do anything I can to help you, Johnny. You know – the intimate touch.'” Maybe I’m really just a ten year old boy or maybe I think it’s funny because it sounds like something very, very naive would say but “the intimate touch” almost made coffee come out my nose.

trailer park paparazzi

The day didn’t turn out exactly as planned but it did give us lots of silly little stories, and we got to hang out the whole day which is way more than I ever expected. I’m really, really looking forward to hanging out with Allie again! To be able to connect with people through blogging like this is seriously the coolest. Consider this post encouragement to reach out and contact that person you follow that seems like they’d be a ton of fun. If us two shy gals can do it, you can too!

Until next time, trailer park.

May Goals

by Kaylah Stroup May 2, 2017

planter by Friend Assembly, available at Moorea Seal.

I’ve mentioned quite a few times how much I enjoy making lists, and how much I like making goals. I make intense to do lists daily and write a hefty list of goals at the beginning of every year. I recently started reading the blog Writes Like A Girl. I was instantly drawn to her great photography, stylish outfits, and general aesthetic but the second I saw her monthly series ‘small goals’ I was inspired. I grabbed my notepad and wrote down a few things I wanted to accomplish in the coming month.

Fast forward a few weeks I’m watching random TED talks on youtube. I started with one and when it ended youtube just started playing another. I like to have shows on in the background while I edit photos so I just let them roll. Some were interesting, some I completely tuned out and then there was one that really struck a chord – Inside the mind of a master procrastinator by  Tim Urban. It’s less than fifteen minutes long and definitely worth watching. I’m a pretty darn proficient procrastinator. I don’t enjoy being one, I’d much rather not stress about things at the very last minute but at least I know I’m able to pull it together when I need to. Anyway in the talk he explains in a fun way how being a procrastinator works, and that he had shared this on his blog in a very lighthearted way. Thousands of people responded but told him how troubling being a procrastinator for them is when they don’t have a deadline. How you can have so many things you’d like to do but don’t necessarily have to do therefore that panic of “I have to get this done!” never sets in… and then you never start at all.

I totally get that. I have tons of little projects brewing in my brain but no real push to put them into action. Writing down and sharing my goals here on the blog is a huge reason why I think I’m able to accomplish so many of the ones I make each year but what about the ones I’m not positive I can pull off, the ones I just never write down, or the ones that seem like too much of a short term goal to write on a year long list? Well, they’re the reason I’m starting a monthly goal series. Consider this a way I can help hold myself accountable, a reason to do the things I actually want to do but don’t need to.

May Goals

  • Watch 7 new TED talks. I already told you I like things on in the background while I work so maybe instead of watching the same movies over and over I could be learning something new. I recommend watching the one I linked above if you’d like to join me in this goal. I also really enjoyed this one by Laura Vanderkam on how to gain control of your free time!
  • Take a hike. By myself, with Klaus, with Jeff, with family… it doesn’t matter. I’m surrounded by beautiful parks it’s a bummer to not use them.
  • Start on a new fabric collection. I guess technically you could say I already have started on my next fabric collection since I’ve been collecting beach finds specifically for this reason but now it’s about putting the plan in action. I have no idea how quickly everything will fall into place but I’d like to at least get the fabric ordered by the end of the month.
  • Buy nothing except food, gas + pet supplies. Last month sucked financially for the simple fact that I owed a lot more in taxes than I thought I would. It was a shock, to say the least. My main priority this year is to leave the country for a few days. Not just Canada, but like a “real” vacation. That means a lot more to me than a pack of pens or a cute dress from Target. So I might as well put every penny toward it. On one hand this goal sounds incredibly easy but I also know how Target and TJ Maxx suck me in so we’ll see how this goes. Note: fabric in this case counts as a necessity since it’s another one of my goals.
  • Shoot one outfit post per week. The weather is warming up and I have no excuse not to be shooting at least one new outfit post per week!

How about you? What do you want to accomplish this month?

project 365 : days 114 – 120

by Kaylah Stroup May 1, 2017

114 : 365 Just a crazy catnip kitten.

115 : 365 Beach glass finds for the day. So many tiny blue pieces, and unique shades of green. I even managed to find a yellow, and two reds. I’d call it a successful trip to the beach.

116 : 365 My favorite plant, and an obvious favorite photo subject when I’ve got nothing else.

117 : 365 Water thief.

118 : 365 Last Friday of the month means one thing – Critical Mass! Literally the best day of the month, every month. My brother and his family came up to Cleveland and joined us for the ride. It was a blast. I was super nervous because it was raining right up until starting time. It stopped long enough for us to get in nearly ten miles though, and the rain only picked up again as we got back to our cars. Talk about perfect timing! Also, check out that shark horn. My bike is so snazzy.

119 : 365 My air plant is getting some color to it!

120 : 365 A peek at my office. I’m dying to shoot, and share more photos of this room but I desperately need to buy a frame for a massive print I have. It’s kind of the star piece in the room but it’s driving me nuts that it isn’t framed. Not only is it super large but the print is also a funny size so it’s going to be super expensive and I’m just dreading spending the money.

Happy Monday!

Zion Chapel of Ease Cemetery

by Kaylah Stroup April 27, 2017

I’m throwing it way back to November’s trip down to Savannah, Georgia today. Basically, I only shot cemetery photos while we were down that way, and when I came home to edit them I hated nearly all of them, except for the ones from Colonial Park Cemetery. Still swooning over those, actually! It took a few months but I eventually started going back through them hoping to salvage some. First, my shots from Bonaventure Cemetery which were noooowhere as bad as I originally thought. Now, my photos from Zion Chapel of Ease Cemetery!

I originally spotted this cemetery on our way to get Thanksgiving Dinner. We stayed on Hilton Head Island. I don’t recall if I mentioned how much we didn’t enjoy that or not. But yeeeah, we didn’t end up having much fun there. Our experience there was just that everything cost a lot of money and/or was closed. It was Thanksgiving weekend so it’s not surprising that things were closed but it was still kind of shocking how little there was to do that appealed to us. Anyway, our holiday dinner options were $50 per plate hotel food or to hopefully stumble across something on this fancy pants island that was open. We ended up finding a tiny little diner where we were able to play mini golf next door after stuffing our faces. So clearly, it wasn’t all a bummer.

Anyway, I spotted this cemetery off the main road on our way to the diner. We made plans to wake up early the next day, and head straight there. When we arrived the next morning the lighting was beautiful but I was slightly underwhelmed with the cemetery itself. It was a lot smaller than I had anticipated. Only 46 marked graves! There just weren’t many shots to take. When I came home and sorted through the photos I liked a handful of the shots but felt like there wasn’t enough to post. Fast forward to last week, I decided to revisit the photos yet again and wouldn’t ya know it, I ended up really digging them, and finding a few more worth sharing.

zion chapel of ease cemetery, hilton head island cemetery

Built in 1846, the mausoleum is the oldest standing structure on Hilton Head Island.

hilton head island

I just can’t get enough of this combination of early morning light, Spanish moss, and beautiful old headstones. These photos make me want to go back immediately.

There is one more cemetery worth of photos left from this trip that I still don’t like. We’ll see how I feel about them in another few months! 😉
