Sometimes I go places, this is where you can read about my adventures. Road trips, cemeteries, abandoned places – they’re all here.

abandoned party supply company

by Kaylah Stroup June 11, 2015

Whenever Jesi comes to Cleveland to hang out I always rack my brain to think of awesome places to take her. This city has no shortage of abandoned buildings but I want to take her places that will just wow her. The abandoned “rubber duck factory” was a hit and something that I felt would be super hard to top. My only real idea for our adventure was a building formerly home to a company that supplied window displays for large companies, and rented decorations for parties. The company closed in 2009 after nearly 80 years in business. The internet boom basically killed the need for a place like this, people can now order these things from the comfort of their own home instead of buying locally.

Before closing the company held a liquidation sale but clearly they weren’t able to get rid of everything. This building is chock-full of left over decorations. There are three floors, not including the basement, that are just absolutely packed with things. The floors seem to be somewhat organized by holiday or theme. The top level is Christmas. There are boxes upon boxes, still unopened, of tinsel, ornaments, even trees!

The second floor seems to have a lot of craft supplies. Massive bolts of now moldy fabric, and fake flowers litter the floor. Two large cutting tables sit on one side of the room. Shelving units now hold a few random bottles and an empty pack of cigarettes, signs others come here to a have their own party.
Sometime after closing a portion of the building caught fire. That and some pretty extensive water damage make the floors on one whole side of the building pretty dangerous to traverse across. Despite the fact this was my third time inside the building I still haven’t covered a lot of ground simply because it’s not worth the risk of falling through the floor. There are also lots of really really dark areas in the building, which I don’t venture into either. What can I say? When it comes right down to it, I’m a huge weenie.
Even excluding those huge portions of the building I may never see, it’s incredible the wide range of things there are to discover. I understand that a lot of times it’s easier just to leave things behind especially in a situation like this where your business goes belly up but this just seems like such a huge waste. I can’t even imagine how much money worth of merchandise is still in this building, the great majority of it non-salvageable now.

My very first visit to this building was late at night during a storm. The rain was just pouring into the building like there was no roof at all. Even though it’s been abandoned for a while now but I can’t imagine it’ll stay up much longer. Ohio weather is rough on structures that have no one left to fend for them. Although I say it in nearly every abandoned post, I do look forward to visiting this building again in the future to see how it decays.

abandoned greenhouse – revisited

by Kaylah Stroup June 2, 2015

Back in January I shared photos of an abandoned greenhouse that Jeff, Brandon, and I visited. (See here) Although I loved the photos I got on that visit I was really excited to go back in the spring and see it all grown up. Last week I had that opportunity.

As we approached the greenhouse the three of us each let out an audible noise of excitement about how insanely green the place was. We even questioned how plausible it actually was to photograph since it looked so overgrown. Would we even be able to move around with all the vines, trees and greenery? Funnily enough once inside I was a bit underwhelmed with the growth. It wasn’t until I got home and looked at the photos from the last visit that I realized how much more green the place was. Inside, surrounded by all these plants, it’s less like a greenhouse and more like a jungle. Save for the broken glass and pieces of metal peeking through in certain places it’s easy to forget what this used to be.

We read a few different accounts from people that had also visited. They said to watch out for foxes, coyotes, and other wildlife. So I entered with my fingers crossed, I wanted to see animals in here so bad. The pictures would have just been amazing. Alas, I didn’t see anything more than a quick orange cat who wouldn’t let me within 25 feet of him.

I’m hoping to get back here in the fall too, of course! It’s so much fun to be able to compare photos and see how it changes. Plus this place covered in shades of red, orange, and yellow has to just be magical.

Salton Sea of the Midwest // on film

by Kaylah Stroup May 12, 2015

Back in March Jeff, Jason and I discovered a former vacation spot beside a lake that was full of abandoned trailers. That day I shot with both my pentax k1000 and my 60D (…and my land camera because what can I say, I apparently love to juggle cameras.) I posted the digital photos right away (see here) but just recently got the film from that day developed. I wasn’t 100% positive I would share these since I already posted photos of this place but the film gives off a whole different vibe than the digital images. The film photos are so much grittier and while I don’t necessarily think that is accurate to how this place actually felt, it sure does look good!

I’m looking forward to getting back here some time this summer and seeing it all grown up and green.

All of the photos above were taken with a Canon T2 and Fujifilm 35mm Superia X-TRA 400.

First Hike of Spring

by Kaylah Stroup April 7, 2015

One of my favorite spring activities is hiking with my family. This year it seems like spring was a little slow to start. The snow took forever to melt, and the cold just seemed to linger on and on. That coupled with the fact I’m now living a lot further away from my parents means our family hikes have been quite limited. Easter was the first one all year. It was great though because my brother, my nephew, and my niece joined us as well. It’s really fun to see the little ones (although they’re not so little anymore!) getting into nature. Grace came wearing a vest that was equipped with a magnifying glass, walkie talkie and a few containers for bugs. I’m kicking myself for not getting a picture of that now! But I did take lots of other pictures…

I guess it’s becoming kind of an annual tradition for me to share photos from early spring hikes. Check out last year’s post – 2014.

Salton Sea of the Midwest

by Kaylah Stroup March 30, 2015
A little while back Jeff, Jason and I took a day trip to do some exploring. We were all pretty darn sick of being cooped up inside for the last few months. It was a gorgeous day so I don’t think it really mattered where we went. I was just happy to be out looking for things to shoot again. You could have told me we were going anywhere and I’d have been like “Cool! Sounds great! Let’s go!”

When we arrived at the destination, it’s safe to say we were all blown away. It was better than we imagined.  This area, formerly a little vacation spot, has been abandoned since at least 2008. The left side of the now overgrown road has little cottages, and the right is lined with colorful trailers. In those seven years the weather has really taken a toll on these structures. Most of were still full of things like one day everyone just picked up and left. Essentially had we discovered the midwest’s version of the Salton Sea. It was incredible! We spent nearly four hours (!!!?) wandering in and out of each trailer and cottage taking photos.

It’s funny because the one big thing Jeff was really set on seeing last year on our road trip was the Salton Sea. It was amazing, we both took tons of photos and were just completely overwhelmed by it. But, y’all, this place! We both sheepishly admitted while strolling down the abandoned road these trailers rest on that it was a cooler experience than the Salton Sea. It’s so crazy to think that we had something like that so close. There have obviously been other people here, and we’re not the first people to photograph it but it’s fun to think this ours. It’s not a tourist destination like the Salton Sea has essentially become. Maybe someday it will become a spot that everyone gets but the three of us will still have all have the experience of discovering it together and memories of how stinking exciting it was.
xoxo

Ps. You can check out Jeff’s post from this place here, and Jason’s here.

Baltimore’s Graffiti Alley

by Kaylah Stroup March 22, 2015
Back at the end of February when Jeff and I took our little roadtrip to escape the cold but didn’t at all we made a quick stop in Baltimore. Jeff has a friend who lives there so we planned to meet up with him for dinner. It was the last big stop before heading home, and to tell you the truth I wasn’t too pumped about it. We’d only have a few hours in the city, and after getting dinner it would be SO late to drive six hours home. It just seemed silly to me.

It didn’t take long before we stumbled upon graffiti alley, and I was instantly in love with the city. We were just driving around when we both saw it out of the corner of our eyes. We rushed to find a parking spot and wandered on over. It’s the only legal spot for graffiti in the city. Paint covers every wall, door, window, and pipe. Even the ground is covered although due to the snow we couldn’t really get a good look. It was so incredibly colorful.

After that we drove around a bit more, making quick stops here and there to jump out and take photos. It was too cold to do much walking around but we still both thoroughly enjoyed our short time in the city. It felt a lot like home.

Baltimore, I hope to see you again reeeeeal soon!

land camera photos // bikes bikes bikes

by Kaylah Stroup March 17, 2015
Over the weekend we celebrated spring hard, except as I was sitting here scanning these photos I realized spring isn’t until this coming Friday. Haha, whoops! Regardless the weather was gorgeous and we did quite a bit of making up for the last few months spent indoors. Over three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we biked just over fifty miles which is pretty darn incredible considering that’s over twice what I had done so far this year total. I can’t even begin to tell you how great it felt to get out again. I missed my bike so very much.

One of my goals this year was to take daily life photos, things that were a little more natural that just a posed photos with friends. On Friday, and Saturday I took my land camera out with me and shot photos that perfectly fit what I was thinking of when I made that goal. Some are a little blurry, out of focus, and just plain crooked but I love them so much. I want more photos like these. It’s so easy to get caught up trying to take a beautiful photo that sometimes I end up missing a moment that means more than a perfect photo ever could.

I’m so pumped for the weather to continue warming up. It was super nice over the weekend but there were definitely moments where I was cold.  I’m looking forward to shorts and tank top weather and all the rides we’ll be taking then!
xoxo

You can find land camera film here: black and white or color.
If you’re interested in buying a land camera check out your local
thrift store, but if you’re in a hurry there are always some floating
around on ebay. I bought mine from Film Photography Project on ebay a handful of years ago or so when they were having a sale. They do currently have a few in their webstore.
They’re slightly pricey compared to what you’d find at a thrift store
or estate sale but they have been tested and come with batteries. Plus
they have really great service that I can attest to! When I first got
the camera I had no idea what to do with but it actually came with an
instructional DVD and that’s pretty stinken awesome if you ask me.

36 degrees + 8.9 miles

by Kaylah Stroup March 9, 2015

Last week we had a few pretty nice days, a sure sign spring is on it’s way…finally. On Wednesday it was nearly 40 degrees which almost feels tropical compared to the weather we’ve been having. I set out to take outfit photos but after driving around for around fifteen minutes decided I’d rather be on my bike. I ran some errands (upgraded my phone! woot woot!) and then scurried back home to layer up.

My new apartment is only fifteen minutes away by car from my old one but that difference when it comes to biking is HUGE. I never did like biking in Lakewood, I prefer it around downtown and in all the little neighborhoods surrounding. I used to drive from my apartment to Jeffs, park and then bike from there. It was such a time suck to have to do that, and it stopped me from going out a lot of the time. From my new apartment all of these places are a hop, skip, and jump away. It’s awesome. I still haven’t gotten over the fact I live in such an awesome little neighborhood. I finally feel like a city girl. I know that has to sound so silly to people are more accustomed to city life, or at least didn’t live in the middle of nowhere for the majority of their life but THIS. IS. SO. AWESOME! It’s so great that at any time I can just hop on my bike and so explore Cleveland.
Sadly, it’s been way too cold for me. I want to try to come up with a really good excuse on why I took a little accidental one month hiatus from my bike but I just hate riding in the cold, plain and simple. Maybe I was ill prepared? I know next year, or rather when winter comes around again at the end of the year, I plan on buying better winter biking clothing. But really, I don’t enjoy layering or being outside when it’s freezing. It just doesn’t excite me like it did when I was a kid.
It was so cold out that my banana was a tiny bit frozen when I finally stopped to eat it… and it was literally one of the best bananas I’ve ever eaten. Guess I prefer them cold. Who knew!

The cold weather, and my great distaste for it has really thrown a wrench in my mileage these last three months. I set a goal for the end of the year of one thousand miles and right now I’m sitting at 19.84. Haha. Am I worried I’m not going to reach my goal? Not one bit. I got this, you just wait until it warms up a bit!

Abandoned Motel

by Kaylah Stroup February 26, 2015
While the first day of mine and Jeff’s little escape was fun, the second day of the trip was the real highlight. We drove the back roads from Norfolk, Virginia to Baltimore, Maryland, and even dipped into Delaware just so we could add another state to the list of them that we’ve been together. (Sitting pretty at 17 right now, can’t wait to add more!) We were stumbling upon incredible looking abandoned places left and right but sadly, due to the weather, we couldn’t stop. There was no where to park. Places that would be perfect to pull the car off the road were covered in enough snow that getting stuck was a real risk and not one we were willing to take.

Somewhere in Delaware, we stumbled upon this motel. We both saw it at the same time and looked at each with pure excitement. Luckily it was near a few other businesses that were still in use so we were able to whip around and park across the street in one of their parking lots. We trudged through the snow and snooped around this truly spooky site.

I’m obviously unsure of any back story on this place, and it’s hard to tell how long any place been abandoned. This place was so far gone. The inside was absolutely trashed and clearly, the outside is a wreck. I love colors but honestly, I think my favorite part might be that sign! It’s so creepy looking. I would love to see it in the spring, the vines covering it with leaves on them. I bet it’s lovely!

Rushing around like we did at the motel reminds me of when Jeff and I were out west last summer and we stopped at a ghost town called Two Guns*. I found it on Roadside America and it ended up being right on the way to where we were heading except we were majorly crunched for time. We had reservations, and had to check into our wigwam before the front office closed for the night. But Two Guns!!!! It looked amazing. We had to stop, there was no two ways about it. We agreed we’d only spend ten minutes there so we both got out of the car and literally ran from building to building snapping photos like crazy. The ten minutes was up in no time at all. We got back to the car gasping for breath and full of adrenaline. My pictures weren’t that great, and I’d love to reshoot it but it’s honestly one of my favorite memories from the whole trip. Now we’ve started referring to times that we rush around an abandoned property due to any kind of time restraint as “going Two Guns”

This motel was totally awesome but I think my favorite part will always
be the adventure of it. It was wide open and not a challenge to
get to at all but running across a divided highway and dashing around in
the freezing cold was so much fun. We definitely went Two Guns on that place!
xoxo
