read more books

by Kaylah Stroup May 30, 2016

I love the city I live in. I’m pretty sure I’ve made that abundantly clear by now. Sometimes I just want to shout it from the rooftops though. Maybe it’s not so much the city itself but what it represents to me. Don’t get me wrong, Cleveland is awesome. We’re definitely a lot more cool than anyone gives us credit for. But a lot of the things I really enjoy are simply because they’re so different than what my life used to be like.

Before living here I was in my early twenties, in a long term relationship where I was unhappy, thinking “well, this is my life. This is what it’s going to be like. Too late to do anything about it, I’m already so invested.” It’s not that anything was critically wrong but I certainly wasn’t fulfilled. There wasn’t any excitement or adventure. Then it was like one day I woke up and realized “Woaaah, nooooo! Girl, you gotta do you!” …Except it wasn’t a huge dramatic realization at all. It happened slowly over a long period of time but as soon as those whispers in my mind got louder they were impossible to ignore. Something had to happen.

If you’ve been reading The Dainty Squid for a while now you’d probably agree that things started to change when I got my license at the ripe old age of twenty-three. It opened my eyes that there was a lot more out there in the world than the life I had built in Geneva. I wanted – no, HAD – to see more, do more, be more! Things changed pretty rapidly after that.

On the way home from purchasing my first car back in 2013,  I spotted an abandoned building off the highway. On the side of the building it read “READ MORE BOOKS”. I lost it! It was the coolest graffiti I had ever seen (There is zero graffiti where I come from, okay?) I couldn’t imagine who would paint that? Why? Or even how they got up there! It blew my little country girl mind. I just loved it so much. I wanted so badly to pull over and photograph that building but couldn’t imagine getting off the freeway to try and find this building. And getting out of the car near it? No waaaay.

I met Jeff a mere month after moving up here and not long at all after that he took me inside that building not knowing just how special that was to me. Since that first time, I’ve been in just about every inch of that building. I’ve watched the sunset from the roof, and I’ve even been up the water tower.

Three years after seeing that building for the very first time from the side of the highway, I live within walking distance. Up until early last week I actually had never considered juuust how close I was to it. I wanted to take a photo of it with a new camera and figured I’d just walk. I planned for it taking a lot longer but in less than ten minutes Klaus and I there. Being there, in front of this building, with my puppy dog, my camera and not a care in the world got me feeling some sort of way and I just had to type it all out.

I drive by this building on the way home from the grocery store, and it’s visible when I get to the end of my street. I see it nearly every single day. I just can’t believe it’s my turf now. This world that was previously unimaginable to me is mine for the taking. It’s so silly for this building to mean so much to me but it’s really cool to see things come full circle like that.

Life is really rad, and honestly, it is NEVER too late to start again. Being happy is worth so much more than anything. Also, you should probably go ahead and read more books! 😉
xoxo

This building is actually in the process of being renovated. It’ll soon, well maybe not “soon”, be a school. It’s awesome to hear that it won’t be demolished and so fitting that a building with the words “read more books” will be a place kids will do just that!

two minute beach clean

by Kaylah Stroup May 24, 2016
beach trash, lake erie, cleveland, green, plastic

Since my last found on the beach post there have been some definite improvements to my favorite beach. Judging by the marks in the sand, they did that thing where they just plow everything into a dumpster. It gets rid of all the driftwood, a lot of the sand, and some of the trash. I’m not 100% sold on this method of cleaning up the beach considering the fact that it just pushes a lot of the trash into the remaining sand, making it sort of like buried treasure. Better than nothing, I guess. It does nothing to stop more stuff from washing up though.

I mentioned it briefly in one of my previous beach related posts but I recently started following a bunch of other folks who really love the beach, and all things beach related. Seriously you have to check out plastic monster! I wish they posted more. This fills up my explore feed with even more of these beach lovin’ people. I’m normally a little creeped out by how “smart” the internet it, how it shows me what it thinks I want to see, but I’ve really enjoyed being exposed to more beach combers and their finds.

Something I kept seeing was the hashtag “2minutebeachclean“. I was super excited to find so many other people who helped pick up their beaches. It was also reassuring to see that my beach isn’t the only one with these issues, that it’s a global problem! I mean, obviously it’s not a good thing that it’s a global problem but when I share these posts and everyone comments “MY beach isn’t that dirty! Lake Erie must be gross!” you start to think “Oh no! What if it is only my beach!?”

After browsing instagram for a little bit I felt inspired to do my own two minute beach clean. The photos below show everything green I picked up in a short stroll from one side of the beach to the other. It’s a fairly quick walk. I just used google maps to measure it, 530ft wide. I was planning on writing “this was obviously longer than a two minute beach clean” but I guess technically it could have been since it’s such a short distance. It definitely didn’t take long to pick it up. As with every one of my found on the beach posts, I spent more time organizing it all for photos than I did picking it up.

plastic, lake erie, plastic pollution
lake erie, great lakes, trash, beach trash

According to the 2 Minute Beach Clean website, June 11th is first annual beach clean up day. Even if you don’t live near a beach, take a few minutes out of your day pick up some litter on your daily walk, from the parking lot, from the ditch, etc. Every little piece counts!

7 tips for finding beach glass

by Kaylah Stroup May 4, 2016
blue beach glass, green beach glass, lake erie, beach glass

When I first got into finding beach glass I was surprised to learn that we even had some in Ohio. I guess in my mind it was probably only in Florida. I dunno why, I just imagine that the beaches in FL have lots of treasures. That combined with the fact I had only heard of it referred to as “sea glass”  meant it definitely wasn’t going to be in any of the Great Lakes. I was so very wrong. The Great Lakes, as well as many other bodies of water, have incredible treasures just waiting to be found! I get a lot of questions about beach glass whenever I share photos so I thought it’d be fun to share some tips. I’ve only been doing this for around four years but I’ve learned so much in that time.

lake erie, cleveland, beach glass, mermaid tears

First, lets talk about little bit about the what and where. Beach glass is formed when broken bottles are tumbled in a body of water until the sharp edges are round and smooth. This usually takes twenty to thirty years but sometimes even longer. Glass from the sea, or ocean is slightly different from that of glass from bodies of fresh water. Generally it’s more frosted, and the edges are smoother than that which comes from fresh water. That’s definitely not to say we don’t have some really great stuff in the Great Lakes!

Different beaches all have different things that wash up. I frequent four separate beaches along Lake Erie in the Cleveland area and none of them wash up the same types of items or colors of glass. One of my beaches has tons of glass but most isn’t tumbled very smoothly, and another produces gorgeous, smooth, frosty glass but a very small quantity. It’s tempting to want to ask people which beaches they go to but most won’t share their highly treasured spots. Your best bet is to get out there and do some exploring for yourself. I think it’s important to visit a beach multiple times before crossing it off your list. Like I said earlier, I don’t know how long I went thinking we didn’t have beach glass simply because I was looking at the right time of the day, or carefully enough.

lake erie, cleveland, beach glass, mermaid tears

7 tips for finding beach glass!

▴ Slow down. Lets be real, this is a great tip for just about everything in life. Seriously though, unless you have a SUPER sharp eye even walking at a regular pace is too fast. Take your time wandering the beach, you’ll have a much better chance of spotting something.

▴ Get low! Obviously things are easier to see when you’re closer. On a warm day there is nothing more relaxing than plopping down in the sand and looking for glass. Which brings me to my next tip…

▴ Dig a little. Not with a shovel or anything but sometimes I actually do use a piece of driftwood just to give my hand a break. Tiny shells can be shaaaarp! The photo above? That is prime for beach glass, the thing is it might not all be on the surface. Simply removing the top layer is likely to reveal more glass.

lake erie, cleveland, beach glass, mermaid tears

▴ Rocky beaches! Have you noticed something about all the photos I’ve shared in this post? The beach is rocky. Choose beaches that have rocks and tiny pebbles near the waterline, in that mix will most likely be beach glass. Some beaches never really wash this stuff up though. Super smooth, sandy beaches that are very well maintained aren’t likely to yield too much. Tides obviously effect how rocky a beach is and subsequently what you’re going to find. Low tide is best but I’ve found beach glass at all times of the day.

▴ Go after storms, or even better during the rain. Any sort of inclement weather is your friend for two main reasons. One – it’ll most likely be wavier than normal which means more things being washed ashore. Two – there are less people there. While I try not to be dumb and competitive with other beachcombers (hey, we both think trash is treasure!) the fact of the matter is they could find something before me.

joules wellies, rain boots, lake erie, cleveland, beach glass, mermaid tears

▴ Wear rain boots. Wet feet on a chilly day is awful. I can’t tell you how many times I went to the beach with the intention of staying dry and drove home barefoot because a wave I wasn’t expecting got me. Not to mention the fact that sometimes you’ll spot a piece of glass that hasn’t washed in yet. I swear, it’s always a color you’re looking for too! Boots mean you can get those pieces without hesitation. My fox boots are from Joules a few years ago. I had these babies for three years before I finally got a tiny hole in them last week and I am ROUGH on boots. I would highly recommend them!

▴ Don’t forget to look further up the shore. Beach glass shines beautifully in the sun when it’s wet, making it pretty easy to spot. That doesn’t mean right along the water is where you should look though. Lots of large pieces go overlooked in dry spots. In the two photos above you can see the difference between wet and dry. Look at it shine while wet but just a few more feet up the beach a similar blue piece is nearly camouflaged.

lake erie, beachcomber

Over time you’ll develop an eye for it. Even when I’m not at the beach I catch myself noticing pieces of glass and thinking “oh my gosh, bluuuue!” only to realize it’s literally just a broken bottle. You may even start to find other things in the sand you want to collect. Pottery shards are one of my favorites. Someone on instagram was actually able to identify the china pattern on the blue shard below. Although it’s probably the most common pattern, being able to trace it is beyond cool in my book!

Looking for beach glass is honestly one of my favorite hobbies (and I sure do have a lot of hobbies!) It’s incredibly relaxing. I’d consider it my favorite way to decompress. If you’re looking for a stress free hobby, that super easy, and super satisfying – you’ve found it. Every single person I’ve ever taken to look for beach glass has gotten into it. It’s a blast! One last thing, I must warn you, searching for beach glass is ADDICTING. Once you get started, you’ll never want to stop. Good luck!

Salton Sea of the Midwest – 2016

by Kaylah Stroup May 2, 2016

Yesterday Jeff and I took a drive to one of our favorite little vacation spots of yesteryear, the abandoned trailer park. We first discovered this spot in early 2015 and have since made a few voyages there. It doesn’t seem to be losing it’s charm for either of us. It’s such a cool spot and it seems like each visit I find something new. Yesterday, multiple times, I said “I don’t remember seeing this last time, do you?!”

I wish I had more information on this place since I really do enjoy sharing that sort of stuff in my posts about abandoned places but I’ve got nothing on this spot. The most I can offer you is that this was a vacation area along a lake. The road is lined with rotting cottages, and colorful trailers, both full of furniture and possessions. No idea why it closed and why even if the grounds that the trailers were on closed that people didn’t come back to haul out their vacation homes. Seems awfully silly to just leave them, unless of course they weren’t owned individually but rented instead. Regardless, dishes left in the sink of one trailer make it look like there was intention to come back. Abandoned places like this one have such an air of mystery surrounding them.

I was a little nervous heading out on this trip that I wouldn’t be able to find anything different to shoot, that I would essentially be taking the same shots I had already taken. Aside from the few I tried to reshoot, I feel like I captured all new stuff. I’m really excited about my photos. I’m also really excited to continue to photograph this place, documenting how it changes. While trying to write this post I kept getting distracted, flipping back and forth between this and the old posts seeing how things have progressed.

The photo above is one of the few that I had remembered taking on a previous
visit and tried to at least somewhat replicate so I could compare. Without actually referencing the photo I’d say I did a pretty awesome job getting a very similar shot.
It looks drastically different since I last saw it just around a year
ago. (You can find the original photo in this post.) Ohio’s four very distinct seasons are definitely rough on abandoned things. I’ll never get over the huge difference between the stuff we have out here compared to the places we’ve found in the desert.

Our trip was fairly uneventful and quick. Middle of the day on a weekend is never really a good time to explore. Although this spot is obviously a bit secluded it’s near some occupied homes so we tried our best to be quick and quiet. The big excitement for me came hours later while laying in bed watching a movie. I was running my fingers through my hair when I felt something. I thought it was a scab, and I was curious but not too concerned so I pulled it out. I glanced at my finger and found a tick. Yuuuuuck! It’s pretty hard to gross me out and generally I love all sorts of creepy crawlies but I had to shower immediately after that. Ticks just freak me out. Those suckers are dangerous. I wasn’t just grossed out, I was offended this little jerk thought he could hitch a ride of me. I’m still really grossed out and basically want to stand in a scalding hot shower all day but I guess I should just be glad he never latched on. Moral of the story? Don’t forget to check for ticks, ALWAYS!

You can find other posts on this spot here – March 2015, March on film, and June 2015.

shackman multishot 102 – part two

by Kaylah Stroup April 19, 2016
land camera, instant camera

Last month I shared a little about my newest camera, the shackman multishot 102, which was an incredible gift from a reader. I am LOVING this thing. I’m only a few packs of film in but it’s easily one of my favorite cameras.

It’s biggest downfall is that it’s a pretty awkwardly shaped camera that doesn’t fit in any of my camera bags (…and I own a lot of camera bags!) so I have to carry it around in a separate tote. I wish it were easier to haul around but I think that might lead to me taking too many photos. Since the film compatible with this camera is no longer in production and super expensive now it’s kind of a good thing I can’t take it with me all the time. I really am trying to ration my film but when you have a new toy like this it’s hard to not shoot it.

Cleveland, bridge, black and white instant film

One thing I’m interested in experimenting with more is taking the first photo then rotating the camera before taking the second, like I did in the photo above. The one at the top of this post of my nieces (which I bartered for. Told them I’d go to the pond with them if they let me take their photo. I was going to the pond anyway…) is the first one I took like this and I reeeeeally love it. I’ve really been looking forward to shooting more portraits like that but truth be told, I rarely see my friends in daylight. That sounds like a strange thing to say but everyone just gets off work so late I don’t get to use this camera around them since shooting in anything other than bright sun is out of the question. Perhaps it’s time to pick up an external flash so I’m not as limited.

puppy love

by Kaylah Stroup April 13, 2016

Over the weekend Klaus had a health scare. I would gladly tell you more except it’s pretty gross. Definitely tested how strong my stomach is. While waiting for the vet to open on Saturday morning I googled his symptoms which I, of course, know better than to do. The results were terrifying. All signs pointed to HGE and there were people saying how their dog passed over night. I was a wreck. I went from “Oh, this poor baby needs to go to the vet” to “Oh my god, my best buddy is gonna die!”

The vet visit went really really well. Our vet is an absolute angel. She immediately knelt down to greet him, praised him repeatedly for how handsome he is, and was just so very kind to both of us. I’ve visited my fair share of vets and none have ever been so loving with my pets. I seriously can’t say enough good things about this woman. She made the whole thing so much less scary. Anyway, he got some shots, a liter of fluid put under his skin and some antibiotics for the week.

Things immediately improved after that vet visit (With him. My bank account on the other hand… ouch!) I still worry about him though. He’s acting normally, not that he ever wasn’t actually, but he just looks so skinny. Nothing a day at grandma’s over the weekend won’t be able to fix, I’m sure. I’m not really positive what caused his sickness but it just came on so fast. It got me thinking about how much I love this big goof and how I just can’t imagine life without him. International Pet Day was earlier this week so that combined with the fact he was sick this week means I can totally get away with sharing a bunch of photos of my favorite pupper and telling you all about how much I love him, right? RIGHT.

He’s one of the best things to ever happen to me. There isn’t a day that goes by that Klaus doesn’t make me smile at least fifty billion times. His love of all things squeaky drives me absolutely nuts sometimes but it really is adorable how much he enjoys the noise. Plus I must enjoy it at least a little bit since I literally only buy him toys that squeak. The way he hops up beside me when I sit down and nuzzles his head under my arm so I’m hugging him makes my heart melt. I don’t even mind the fact that he’s always more excited to see Jeff than he is to see me because it makes me happy to see them having so much fun together. (Plus I know Klaus loves me more than anyone else no matter what! Hehe!) I love that he always wants to cuddle and that his favorite place in the world is curled up between Jeff and I. I love how he always wants his front legs held up so he can see the world from a different perspective and that that means we can slow dance. I appreciate the fact that it looks like he likes when I sing to him and I don’t think I’ll ever not crack up watching this dog jump. Puppy’s got hops!

Last month I posted about how excited I was to see Klaus and Professor in bed together  Since then it’s become a regular occurrence. Things were the same for so long, with no signs of a budding friendship, but now it seems like these two are on the fast track to being BFFS. My twitter account has basically turned into a place where I just post photos of Klaus and Professor but when they’re both cuddling on me, or both mean mugging can you blame me?!

Klaus, I love you oh so much! Please refrain from ever scaring me like that again.
xoxo

PS. Give your pets some extra loving today from me and mine! Klaus sends some squeaks.

international pillow fight day 2016

by Kaylah Stroup April 4, 2016
pillow fight, cleveland, #pillowfightCLE

Saturday morning I’m sitting at my desk, drinking my coffee, when a little notification box showed up in the bottom corner of Facebook. “Two of your friends are interested in going to an event.” I click on it, thinking it’s probably a concert. It directs me to an event page titled  “Pillow Fight Day Cleveland.” A pillow fight within walking distance of my house? Say no more, I am 100% interested.

The weather forecast wasn’t the best but I figured if you were the kind of person to go to a public pillow fight, you probably wouldn’t mind a few raindrops, right? The weather mostly held off. While by 3pm the temperature had dropped significantly from where it was at the beginning of the day, it wasn’t raining. A little bit of snow started to fall but still over 200 people showed up. It was easily one of my favorite experiences so far this year… maybe ever.

I think, without a doubt, the star of the pillow fight was the person in the dinosaur costume. First of all, anyone whose train of thought is “Oh, a pillow fight? I should wear my dinosaur costume!” is cool in my book but everyone clearly loved beating up on the dinosaur. I feel like a lot of children are kind of shy and wouldn’t necessarily be all that comfortable hitting strange adults with their pillows but they took to that dinosaur like flies to honey. Poor dinosaur had to be SO tired at the end of fight!

I originally brought my camera in hopes of getting funny moment of impact shots but shortly after it started I realized I just wanted to shoot all the smiles. Everyone was just glowing with happiness. The crowd was incredibly diverse, people of all ages, races, and walks of life showed up. It was impossible to not smile watching all these strangers hitting each other with pillows. I’m getting all teary eyed typing this because it was seriously just so magical. Seeing adults act like children is my favorite.

I’m pretty sure the shot below is my favorite of the day.
dinosaur costume, pillow fight

Jeff and I didn’t bring along pillows this year, just cameras. 2017, I’m coming ready to fight. I already have it on my calendar.
xoxo

International Pillow Fight Day events happen in cities all across the world. The official website has a list of cities and where they’re being held, as well as tips of creating your own event if there isn’t already one happening in your city. You guys HAVE TO GO next year. I promise, there is nothing like seeing it in person.

driftwood beach fort

by Kaylah Stroup March 23, 2016

Trying to get more steps on my Fitbit means a lot more of me getting out and wandering around. It’s definitely a win/win situation. I’m getting more exercise, and I’m also out doing more of my favorite activities without feeling guilty that I should be at home working. Last week I hit up the beach. I collected some beach glass, and then noticed some nice looking drift wood that was perfect for building a fort. Forty five minutes later I finished her up and put a bunch of the beach glass I had collected earlier inside. I took a handful of photos but wasn’t all that impressed with what I shot. I was still excited to share those photos here because I was proud of my little fort. As I was leaving the desolate beach a woman walked over to a bench to eat her lunch but before sitting snapped a few photos of my fort. I was so excited that I took a crappy photo of her taking a picture of my creation.

The next day it was SUPER foggy. I ran around town taking pictures, and eventually made my way back to the beach. You can see my photos here! I wasn’t too confident that my little fort from the previous day would still be standing, people love to knock stuff down and I wasn’t sure if the waves might have gotten too close, but to my delight it was still there and HOLY COW, it looked awesome in the fog! I took so many photos and couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. The bare trees, the fog, the colors! Everything just came together so wonderfully.

Most importantly though, there were little doggy footprints leading right up to it and the glass had all been taken. Someone else (and their pup!) enjoyed it, and that makes me happy!

shackman multishot 102

by Kaylah Stroup March 22, 2016
film camera, instant camera

Last year around this time a very kind reader, Tasha, sent me an email asking if I wanted a camera that she had laying around. I had never heard of a shackman multishot 102 but a quick google search told me I was verrrrry interested. Time went on, the camera never showed up, and I eventually forgot about it. The announcement that Fuijifilm would be retiring my favorite film got me thinking about all the cameras I’ll probably never shoot and I remembered this one that never showed up in the mail. I hoped that Tasha had just changed her mind and that it hadn’t gotten lost in transit. Apparently my post made her think of the camera too because she sent me an email asking if I still wanted the camera. Heck yessss!

I stalked the tracking number she sent me and hung out at the post office for nearly an hour waiting for them to put it in my box. I rushed home, cleaned the rollers, loaded it up and ran outside to take a photo. First shot was completely black. Crap! I was so bummed out. I fiddled with some settings not really thinking it would help. I went back outside, took the same photo except this time it turned out! I was instantly obsessed. It’s just a simple photo of my neighbors house but ughhhh, I love it so much.

You can either take two nearly identical shots, as seen below, or you can cover one of the lenses and take two totally different shots that will appear on one photo, as seen above. Most of the photos I took are slightly overexposed since my hand didn’t make the best light blocking tool but since they were taken on a super foggy day I like them anyway. I think they turned out really great. I audibly made a noise of pure excitement after peeling the shot above open. It’s just so awesome!
After finishing off my first pack of film I made myself a little lens cap from an empty roll of washi tape that just so happened to be the exact size I needed. I haven’t had a chance to test it out yet but I’m confident it will make all the difference in proper exposure.

I’m SUPER excited to play around with this camera more. I have so many ideas I want to try out with it, it’s going to be super hard to hoard my film now that I have this baby to play around with. I’m positive you’ll be seeing a lot more instant photos taken with this camera on the blog in the future.
xoxo

Thanks again, Tasha! You rule! This camera is sure to be well taken care of for a very very long time!
