by Kaylah Stroup February 24, 2013

Supplies used…
Sally Hansen Right Said Red
Essie Meet Me At Sunset
Essie Fear or Desire
Zoya Pippa
American Apparel Crescent Heights
Funky Fingers Mint Mountain
Zoya Wednesday
Sally Hansen The Sky’s the Limit
Funky Fingers Volt
L’oreal After Hours
Reinforcement Labels
Seche Vite as a top coat

Phew! That’s a long list of colors! Rainbow nails just seemed like the right thing to do though. These turned out even prettier than I had imagined they would while picking out all the colors. A bit childish or not – I really love them! Sometimes it’s nice to just go crazy with color.

Hope you’re having a lovely Sunday!

what I wore : orange you glad

by Kaylah Stroup February 21, 2013
details
coat – Vintage
brooch – thrifted
dress – Got the Memo Dress c/o August Wrinkle
sweater – Charter School Cardigan c/o Modcloth
ring – Burst of Sunshine Ring c/o August Wrinkle
necklace – c/o Oasap
belt – came with the dress
tights – Target
shoes – c/o Wanted Shoes
camera bag – c/o August Wrinkle

I inadvertently added another camera bag to my collection with this bag from August Wrinkle! I just thought it would make a cute purse but come to find out my camera bag insert fits inside perfectly. It’s actually way better than previous bag I was using the insert in, so much roomier. It also has a ton of pockets which is always a plus. I’ve been pocket obsessed for as long as I can remember. The more pockets a backpack had the more likely it would be the one I chose for my school year. Even to this day my decision to buy a coat, purse or anything really can be based on how many pockets it has. What can I say, I’ve always liked to carry way more stuff than I really need. I mean, c’mon, who doesn’t need a whole pocket devoted to lip balm or gum. Haha!

Hope you’re having a lovely Thursday!
xoxo

PS. For better photos of my nails – see here.
PPS. This is the last post (at least for a little while) with blue hair! Last weekend I ventured into new hair color territory. Can’t wait to share photos!

Beginner’s Guide to Insect Pinning Resources

by Kaylah Stroup February 6, 2013
Beginners Guide to Insect Pinning Resources
Beginners Guide to Moth Pinning, insect pinning tutorial

Hello! Looks like you’re here because you’re interested in learning how to start your own pinned insect collection! I have been collecting bugs for over a decade now and would love to share some resources with you. In this post, I have outlined the supplies you need to get started, as well as shared a bunch of tutorials and threw in some of my own tips.

pinned insects

Tutorials & Reading Material…

I have yet to come upon a site that I’ve found to answer all my questions or guide me completely. Here are a few videos with great instructions –
▼ A video on relaxing and pinning a butterfly.
▼ Another great video on pinning insects.
▼ How to put together a relaxing chamber or if you prefer something a bit more concise, here’s another video on putting together a relaxing chamber!
▼ Preparing insect specimens for exhibit – an excellent comprehensive source for those who would rather read everything about starting an insect collection instead of watching a video about it!
▼ Very short instructions on bug pinning but with useful information on where to place pins.

I found it beneficial to read and watch a lot of different tutorials before getting started. Everyone has their own methods they like, use and trust and it’s a good idea to read about pinning from lots of sources so you can develop your own methods.

When I was first getting started with my insect collection something I found quite useful was to do a quick Google search of whatever insect I was pinning to see what a natural position to pin it in would be. (Just search pinned plus the kind of insect (for example “pinned grasshopper”.) Of course, you’re free to pin your insect’s legs in any position you’d like but I found it helpful in the beginning to at least have an idea of what to replicate as I was learning.

Supplies needed to get started building a pinned insect collection…

▼ a spreading board. As the name implies, this is the surface you’ll be using to spread your insects on. This one is great if you’re planning on pinning lots of insects at the same time. This one is really all you need to get started though.
▼ insect pins. Pins come in a variety of sizes but the most common sizes you’ll need to use are #2 and #3. These are the pins I use.
▼ wax paper. If you’re working with insects whose wings you’ll be spreading you’ll need something to keep them down since you never stick a pin through a wing.
▼ killing jars. You obviously don’t need a killing jar if you’re only going to be working with already deceased insects you find but if you do plan on capturing your own live insects to pin you’ll need a place to kill them quickly so they don’t get damaged.
▼ insect pinning forceps. When working with butterflies and moths you want to keep the amount of handling wings low to minimize the chance of damage. Having a smaller, more delicate pair of forceps can be nice too!
▼ shadow boxes. You’re going to need some way to display your insects after they’ve dried. I’ve purchased these shadow boxes for my insect collection a few times. (They can be seen featured in a lot of the photos in this post.) If you’re looking for something a bit larger, I also own these shadow boxes as well.
▼ relaxing chamber. In order for your insects to be soft and ready to spread without breaking you’re going to need to re-hydrate them. NMSU has a great video with instructions on setting up a relaxing chamber. Don’t worry, it’s super easy. I’ve found that using a bento box is *the* way to go – keeps my damp sponge and insects separate! See below for my setup.
▼ eyelash glue. Inevitably, one of your specimens will lose a leg. Eyelash glue is a lifesaver! This little tip took me years to figure out but now that I know, I’d recommend picking some up right off the bat. Please don’t use the same one you’re using on your face, buy one specifically for this purpose only.

Where to find insects…

There are insects everywhere, and neat ones too! You just have to keep your eyes peeled. It’s amazing how easy it is to overlook them. Tell your friends and family you’re starting a collection so they can keep an eye out as well. Even in the dead of winter, you may be able to find new specimens to pin – try looking around your windowsills for flies or ladybugs.

All of the insects in my collection have been found by me or my family. I take a lot of pleasure in knowing that but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with buying specimens as well. There are many places to buy insects ready to rehydrate and pin online. If you’re looking to support a small business, check out Kat’s Bug Boutique! They have tons of butterflies, and beautiful beetles ready to rehydrate and mount.

Even more places to find insects – Clover Butterfly Co, Bizzare Bugs, LittleLaurenArts (really great beetle selection!) & Little Caterpillar Art.

Killing bugs…

If you’re going to be using any specimens that haven’t already been found deceased they need to be put to sleep quickly. Insects, especially moths and butterflies, will thrash their wings causing damage that you don’t want. This is where a killing jar comes in handy. These jars have a small vial attached to the lid in which is a cotton ball you soak with ethyl acetate (nail polish remover!) This kills the insects quickly.

Because my collecting is mostly done at home, my method of choice is the freezer. I have lots of small jars which I use to collect insects inside of, those then get placed into the freezer until I’m ready to pin them. It’s quick so they don’t cause any damage to themselves and I don’t have to use any chemicals.

One final tip – something I started doing last year was labeling my shadow boxes. I use my cricut to cut out adhesive black vinyl that I stick on the bottom inside of my frames.

Good luck & have fun! xoxo!

2013 Bulletin Board

by Kaylah Stroup January 15, 2013

It’s becoming an annual thing to clear my bulletin board off and start fresh at the beginning of each year. (See 2012’s here) It’s nice to get a chance of scenery in here!

I tried my hardest to only include things that weren’t up on the 2012 board but there were some I just couldn’t leave behind. That silly smiling cat postcard, the tiny deer mount, and “five dollar felines” ad all had to go back up, I just love them too much to hide them away in a drawer.

One of my favorite things up there currently (other than the super awesome banner I made from a salvaged natural history book!) is the little dried mushroom seen in the third photo. Like I mentioned I’ve been cleaning like crazy. De-cluttering everything! One of the things I did was clean out my collection of mushrooms. I had a lot of not so nice specimens from before I really got the hang of drying mushrooms. I choose to only save some of my favorites that I would display instead of keeping them all hidden away in a container like they were. This tiny little guy was one who made the cut but I wanted a better way to display him since I was just smitten with how cute he was. He was already attached to some moss and wouldn’t ya know it while browsing through the same book I made the banner from I stumbled upon a cute little picture of moss. So I glued the mushroom and it’s moss onto the paper. I just love the way it looks. It kind of makes me want to experiment with more print and natural world collages, I think that could be really cool!

A few sources…
stay home club.
“you’re the cat’s pajamas” postcard.
nail polish rack.
the numbered push pins, deer mount and sunglasses are all vintage.

what I wore : the rose bowl

by Kaylah Stroup January 14, 2013
details
hat – thrifted
coat – vintage
dress – Dear Creatures (via Modcloth)
shirt – thrifted
cardigan – Modcloth
sweater clips – handmade
ring – c/o Sea of Bees
brooch – vintage
belt – Moss Mills via Fab
tights – Target
shoes –  Reading Room Romance Flat via Modcloth
camera bag – Jo Totes

How lovely is this vintage coat? I got it back in August on my annual birthday antiquing roadtrip. Last stop of the day about ten minutes before we were about to walk out of the antique mall I spotted it. Love at first sight!! It’s the softest velvety material.

Despite how soft it is and how perfect the color is my favorite part might just be what I found in the pocket. There was a ticket to the 1973 Pasadena Rose Bowl. It’s not the fact that it’s the Rose Bowl that is significant to me (I literally couldn’t care less about college football) but I’m just so in love with the fact that 40 years ago someone was wearing this coat. I know, obviously, that nearly all the vintage I own has had a previous owner but to put a real date and event on it makes it feel so special. I wonder who wore it, and what she wore with it.  I wonder if she’s still alive and I wonder what she’d think of someone discovering the coat 40 years from the time she wore it and absolutely loving it.

I don’t know about you but thinking about who owned something before I did is one of my very favorite things about buying vintage. Needless to say, I’m keeping the ticket in the pocket and maybe I’ll leave a movie stub from one I see while wearing the coat in it for the next person who owns it to find and hopefully enjoy.

Hope you’re having an excellent Monday!

what I wore : to the icy beach

by Kaylah Stroup January 10, 2013

I’ve definitely said it a hundred times before (and I’ll probably say it a hundred more) but I really love the beach this time of the year. Sure the beach is awesome during the summer when it’s sunny out and the water is warm but it’s really interesting to see it with snow, and ice on the sand. It’s like a whole different place (not exactly as foreign as when it’s really snowy out but still!) I never want to live far from the beach.

I bought this dress a while back when Modcloth had a big sale. I was instantly smitten with the colors and had to have it. I’d been hoarding it away to wear on the perfect fall day. I envisioned frolicking in the fallen leaves in it. But that time frame came and went to quickly I never got the chance. So I figured I may as well just wear it now instead. Frolicking around on the icy beach isn’t quite as nice as in the woods during the fall (dude, it was cold) but hey, I still had lots of fun searching for treasures and taking pictures!

ps. did you spot the picture where you can see through my septum?

10 of my favorite nail designs from 2012

by Kaylah Stroup January 5, 2013
I’ve always loved painting my nails. I maybe wasn’t always that great at it (I’ve spilled on the carpet and ruined many coffee tables in my day) but this year I really got into it. In March I started the Weekly Nail feature so I would stop painting my nails literally every day and have a chance to show off some of my designs. Here are 10 of my favorite nail designs from 2012…

If you’re curious about the supplies used for each I’ve included a link to each post where the design was featured…

My Favorite 10 outfits from 2012!

by Kaylah Stroup January 5, 2013
At the very beginning of 2012 I shared my favorite outfits from 2011, so of course it’s only proper that I share a few of my favorite outfits from 2012…

1 // Maroon and Gold 2 // First Coat of the Season 3 // A New Favorite 4 // Polka Dots All Over

5 // Country Mouse 6 // Black, White and Mint 7 // Blue Suede Shoes 8 // Bright and Sunny

9 // Red, white and Raccoons 10 // Cat shirt and flatforms

It was quite hard to choose only ten! There were so many I really liked (and only a few I found embarrassing! Hah!) I kind of wish I had something more to say about my outfits or that I could talk about how my style has evolved but it’s pretty similar to last year. I’m mostly into high waisted skirts
with fun shirts, and dresses – always belted – with a cardigan, tights
and fun shoes. The thing that changes the most is whether it’s
obnoxious patterns or not and whether it’s neutrals colors, bright
colors, or pastels I’m into at the time. All in all, I’m pretty predictable style wise.

Hope you’re having a great weekend!
xoxo

Shout out to my bowler caps to appearing three times in these ten outfits. Clearly one of the best things I’ve ever thrifted.
Also, I am horrible at naming outfit posts, I know. Haha!

This year I…

by Kaylah Stroup December 31, 2012
For the last two years I’ve done a little recap of the things I did that year and I’m going to keep that little tradition going for as long as possible. They’re really fun to look back at even if not much has really changed at all.

This year I…
dyed my hair a bunch of pretty colors!
made friends with a bunch of stray cats including Carl, Lloyd and Cornelius.
found a new favorite city, Chicago!
met all kinds of neat critters.
spent lots of time at the beach, both playing in the water and collecting treasures!
 baked lots of tasty treats.
spent a silly amount of time jumping around

became a big sister to a little puppy who quickly became a giant dog (that 100% stole my heart)!

fell back in love with film!

2012 was a pretty good year if I do say so!

I’ll be spending my new years eve at home (as always!) playing video games and drinking the tastiest rootbeer. I might even spend some time in the bathtub with a book and some of new lush goodies Santa brought me! Sounds like a pretty nice way to bring in the new year if I do say so myself.
xoxo!
