This cat collar is the cutest! It’s also under fifteen bucks!!
 (via: Amazon)
I was literally just thinking how I’d like to make the outside of my laptop look cute a few days ago, then I stumbled upon these decals. LOVE THEM!
 (via: Made of Sundays)
I know I’ve featured
SHiliconfETTI°’s work here before but this cactus sweater is just ridiculous! I would never take it off. There is also a matching throw and pillow!
 (via: SHiliconfETTI°)
I tweeted about this candle and included it in my instagram story earlier this week but it’s currently burning beside me as I type and I couldn’t not talk about it here too. It smells SO good. I don’t know what randomly made me choose to order a candle that I had no idea what it smelled like but it was a solid choice. I want a lifetime supply!
 (via: P.F. Candle Co.)
I like the shape and color of this couch alone but those buttons are what really wins my heart. Love that little pop of color.

This skirt!
(via: Modcloth)
Doesn’t this hammock chair just look so cozy!?
 (via: hammockchaireu)
I’m super into these shoes! I can’t decide whether I like them in black or white better.

Love this lapel pin!

Cat cardigan!!! YAS!

▴ I feel like I should just wear this shirt everywhere because it’s an accurate description of how I feel every time I see a dog.
▴ It’s not striped but I really love this black and white dress.
▴ I’m obsessed with this strappy bralette. This one too! They’re super affordable!
▴ The perfect ring if you love snails.
▴  Love love loooove this polka dot dress!
▴ For some unknown reason, Amazon put this dog wig in my recommendations and I have never laughed harder. There is also a long blond one which had me cackling as well. I hope everyone buys one for their dog and then emails me photos.

Happy Friday!!

nights like these

by Kaylah Stroup January 10, 2017
night photography

After quite a few months of being lazy bums, staying indoors in the evenings, and watching too much Supernatural instead of going out Jeff and I have been making an effort to get out and wander around the city before finally calling it a night. I don’t know why we waited until it was super cold to get back into the habit instead of being out all summer but it feels darn good. It’s amazing how satisfying it is to just be outside, getting fresh air and taking photo. It’s such a simple act but it always improves my mood.

Wandering around at night is never really something I did until moving to the city and meeting Jeff. Even in Geneva, where I lived before Cleveland, where it was suuuuper safe, I remember being outside my house after dark waiting for my best friend to show up and feeling like it was something I shouldn’t have been doing. Now it’s something I do regularly. It’s something that makes me feel alive, and like I’m a part of the city. It’s always funny when someone asks where I like to hang out in
Cleveland or in my neighborhood and then starts naming bars. I don’t
drink so bars have never really been my scene. To answer the question
I’m likely to tell you how about all the weird little nooks and crannies my friends and I have sneaked around to get a photo, or my favorite weird little industrial roads.

Here’s to more nights like these, no matter the weather!

life lately : the new apartment

by Kaylah Stroup January 7, 2017

2017 sure started with a bang! After a few weeks of delays, we finally moved into our new apartment on January 1st. Woooo. We loaded up the moving truck with Jeff’s things and brought them over to the new place only to find my landlord was still hustling to finish up some last minute things. The place was an absolute mess. I mean, it was beautiful but it was covered in tools, and there were tons of little things that still needed finished. Somehow that didn’t stress me out, I just figured “Oh well, we’re movin’ in!” Aaand by the end of the day we did.

So our new apartment in two words? A DREAM. Seriously! I really enjoyed my last apartment. I was ready to live in a different neighborhood, get away from the people who lived next door, and of course, finally live with Jeff but I loved how I had decorated that place and was a little worried that this new place might not be quite as cute. Yeah, dead wrong on that one. This past week has been non-stop unpacking. There is still a ways to go but it’s safe to say this is the cutest place either of us have ever lived. I’m OBSESSED. Any time I leave the house, no matter how short of a time I’m gone, I’m just excited to get back. It’s honestly perfect. I couldn’t have dreamed up a better place for us.

Not to mention the fact it’s in my favorite Cleveland neighborhood. We’re within a three minute walk of so many of our favorite restaurants. We went out to eat a few nights ago and I think I might have repeated “Dude, we walked here. Our apartment is riiiight there!” about fifteen times. It’s a really awesome feeling to live in such a walkable area. I love Tremont.

The new apartment has three bedrooms, and a massive laundry room. I originally thought there were only two bedrooms, if you recall we had only seen this place while it was completely gutted so neither of us were sure what it actually looked like. One of the rooms is obviously our bedroom and the plan was for Jeff and I to share an office in the other bedroom. It was a really great idea in theory but we quickly realized we both have too much stuff to be sharing an office. Luckily there is a third bedroom off the living room which we decided would be my office. Pictured above.

The offices are the two rooms that are still not unpacked. They’re actually a huge mess but considering we’ve been here less than a week its no big deal! I ordered a brand new desk and bookshelf that should be arriving shortly so that’s my plan for the coming week – get my office in order! I’m very excited. I got my dream chair for Christmas so even though my new office hasn’t been put together yet it’s already the coolest.

There isn’t a room in this house that I’m not completely in love with but I must say, the kitchen is definitely a highlight for me. There isn’t a ton of counter space but it is super roomy. It’s very open and it gets beautiful light during the day. The cats also really enjoy the texture of the floor for some reason? So currently Squid is rolling on the kitchen floor in the sunshine! The other thing I really love about it is that it’s connected to the living room with a HUGE doorway. It’s going to be an awesome space for entertaining.

Right now the whole other half of the kitchen that isn’t pictured below is filled with empty boxes. The neighbors downstairs also recently moved in so both recycling bins were completely full. I cannot wait to see the kitchen when it doesn’t have one thousand boxes in it. I’m sure it will seem even bigger!

This post wouldn’t be complete without an update on the pets. Let’s start with some backstory here; when I moved to my first apartment alone back in 2014, the cats hid in the litterbox for nearly a week. They were terrified. You could just tell they were uncomfortable.  My next apartment, for a couple of days after moving they hid in the litterbox but quickly warmed up and made the place their own. So, with this move, I expected they’d hide for a few days then everything would go back to normal. I was wrong because there was no hiding and almost immediately they were out exploring their new surroundings. They are SO happy. I think the fact that this apartment is completely brand new and doesn’t have any smells that belong to other animals is probably key but I would venture to guess that they also sense how happy their people are and that helps.

Also, we had a HUGE breakthrough the other night! Jeff and I were watching TV on the couch. Klaus was cuddled up on my lap snoozing when Professor hopped up on top of him and laid down. Let me repeat that for you, PROFESSOR LAID ON TOP OF KLAUS! They stayed like this for around an hour. I definitely cried a little. There was a time not too long ago when those two would barely hang out in the same room together. It’s taking such a long time but they’re making progress. Slowly but surely they’re becoming friends. I’ve still got hope that one day I will walk into a room and catch them cuddling.

So, basically, I’ve never been happier. This apartment is THE BEST. I cannot wait to finish decorating and share more photos with y’all! Even though these photos are only a few days old, I already feel like there have been tons of little changes that make it feel more like home. Can’t wait to see where we’re at in another week!

I recently got this bag in the mail, and I’m sure I’ll share pictures of it soon but I just have to rave about what an awesome bag it is! I thought it was just a regular backpack but it has a nice little cushy pocket for my laptop and the front pocket holds my kindle perfectly. It’s my new coffee shop bag!

2017 goals

by Kaylah Stroup January 2, 2017
striped pen // let’s do this notepad // mahogany scented candle // planner

I am SO excited about the new year. I know the whole internet thinks it’s dumb but I love the idea of a fresh start. A reset button! A time to review how you’re doing and make changes if you deem them necessary. You should already know by now how much I love making lists and setting goals so let’s get this started already…

▴ Read 20 books. I’ve had it for less than a month, yet I can see how big of an impact having a Kindle has made on my reading habits. I’ve already plowed through three books! In 2017 I want to get back to being that girl that reads all the time. PS. Don’t forget to keep checking my sidebar to see what I’m currently reading!

▴ Spend less time aimlessly clicking. This goes along with reading in a sense. I am hoping by spending less time aimlessly clicking around the internet I will be more productive and therefore have more time to read, and spend with those I love. Last year I spent a lot of time thinking about electronics, social media, and where I’m spending my time. I realized that I waste WAY too much time on things that don’t actually matter. I want to be spending more time outside, more time with Klaus, and more time on my bike. Less time scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, and random webpages.

▴ Make the new apartment feel like home. Obviously one of my big goals for the new year is to get my new apartment decorated and looking just perfect. I’m very anxious to get started on this project. I will absolutely be sharing lots of updates and photos.

▴ Continue saving! 2016 was a really awesome year for me in terms of saving money. I did a pretty awesome job, and owe it all to Digit. I plan on continuing to save so that I can accomplish this next goal…

▴ 2x roadtrips …but hopefully more. I’m hoping that with Jeff and I sharing the cost of bills and spending more time together we’ll be able to plan, and of course, take more trips this year. We’ve been tossing around a few fairly solid ideas lately so I’m excited. Can’t wait to see where this year takes us, and to see if we end up in the desert …again.

▴ Help Klaus feel more comfortable with strangers. Klaus is an amazing dog. He doesn’t chew on anything he shouldn’t, he’s never done anything out of spite like some dogs do, and he’s never had any accidents except when he was super sick but I’ve fallen short as a dog mom. He is kind of awful around people he doesn’t know. I know that’s because I haven’t exposed him to enough people. I also worry that my anxiety rubs off on him, like he senses that I’m uncomfortable around people so he barks to protect us. I feel really guilty about it. Our new apartment is in one of the most dog friendly neighborhoods I’ve ever seen. There are so many places that allow dogs on their patios and I’m always SO jealous when I see people eating pizza with their pooch. I don’t know how realistic of a goal it is to want to take him out to dinner with us by the end of the year but I want to be making progress toward this. If anyone has any tips for turning your grumpy dog into one who at the very least just ignores strangers, let me know!

▴ Be a better stranger. You guys, one of my all time favorite things is sharing a random connection with a stranger. Nothing makes me feel better than a genuine smile from someone I don’t know. I want to do my best to make the number of these interactions and smiles just go through the roof this year. Instead of whispering to Jeff how I like someone’s hair or just keeping it to myself I want to tell them. This goal also includes making eye contact with people, something I’m definitely guilty of avoiding especially with people who I think look interesting which makes no dang sense. I want to share the love, spread positive vibes, and give compliments out like candy in the new year.

▴ Spend more time being creative. More photos. More sewing. More doodling. More painting. More found on the beach collections. More little art projects. Making things makes me happy, so why am I not spending more time doing it?!

▴ Project 365. In 2016 I royally sucked at taking photos. Don’t get me wrong, I took a lot of photos I’m very happy with but my numbers were looooow. Since first picking up a camera a billion years ago I’m pretty sure 2016 had to have the lowest number of shots taken. That really bums me out. I’m hoping that taking on Project 365 again will motivate me to pick my camera when I might otherwise just brush it off. Back in 2014 I wrote the post Project 365 + why you should do one too! if you’re looking for a push to start!

▴ Make 5 new coffee drinks. For Christmas I got a fancy schmancy coffee maker. By the end of the year I want to have tried making at least five different coffee drinks. I know the internet is full of over the top recipes, and in the short time I’ve been drinking coffee I’ve liked every single drink I’ve tried so I’m stoked about this goal. I would love to hear about your favorite fancy coffee drink at home recipes!

▴ Find 35 geocaches. Despite a very strong start last year, I don’t think I found a single geocache the last three or four months of 2016. I enjoy geocaching tremendously so this is my little push to get back into it.

This might be the shortest list of goals I’ve ever written. I’m sure I’ll add a few more along the way seeing as I already added some between the time I took these photos and hit publish on the post but this is definitely a good start. What are some of your goals for this year?
xoxo

on the cutting room floor

by Kaylah Stroup December 31, 2016
One of my favorite photos of Klaus. He looks so happy, and like he has a cigar!

I’ve been spending some time going to through my draft posts these last few nights. With all my things in boxes, the anxiety of this big move, and just the chaos of it all I have not been motivated to write or take any photos. I have so many things I want to blog about but I can barely concentrate at all. I’m very excited to get back on track. To set up my new office, and create a space that inspires me! Just one more night here in my apartment with blue walls. One more night of living alone (eeek!)

Anyway, while cleaning out my drafts I found this post full of black and white photos from back in July. Jeff, Jason, and I had spent the night out at my parents in our hammocks, just to relax and escape the city for a little bit. More photos from that day here. I took so many photos that weekend! I know I’ve talked a bit in the past about how black and white photos are kind of a challenge for me, like I feel I need to be more colorful. More about that in this post from last summer. But I just loved these photos in b+w so much! They’ve seen sitting in this post, waiting for words to be added, since the second I edited them.

I wanted to finally hit publish on this post so that it’d be in my archives for me to stumble upon months or even years later and smile about. These photos feel like summer to me. They feel like happiness. I’d been trying to convince my friends to come out to my parents with me for so long. My parents are super cool, their property is to die for, and I wanted to show my friends where I came from. I love the city, and I can’t imagine living anywhere else right now but there will always be a part of me that just loves to play in the pond and get dirty. A part of me that wants to catch crayfish, and flip over rocks to look for salamanders. It’s who I am, and I really enjoyed showing Jason that part of my life. As silly as it sounds, these photos make me feel sentimental. I can’t wait to do it again next summer.

My dad’s motorcycle that he built all by himself… because he’s a badass.

Hope y’all have a safe + fun New Years Eve. Jeff is shooting a wedding so I’m sending evening with my Kindle and the critters trying not to stress over last minute moving stuff. Cross your fingers everything goes smoothly tomorrow!

I absolutely love Ben Constantine’s style. I would be soooo stoked to have a portrait of me and my critters done by him.
