some of my favorite posts

just me, in my element

by Kaylah Stroup October 20, 2016

Have you ever seen a photo of someone and thought “dang! I wish that was a picture of me!”? Not in the sense that you’d like to look like them but that you’d like to be in their location, doing what they’re doing. That they look like they’re enjoying themselves or that they look confident. That’s how I feel about this photo of myself… which is probably a pretty strange thing to admit. Let me try to explain though.

I’ve been living in Cleveland for just under three years now. It was actually around this time three years ago that I was mentally preparing to start a new life. I know I’ve mentioned it quite a few times, how excited I am to be in this city, and how different my life is but I’ve never really gotten into the details. I even got a weird passive aggressive email once about how I’m “really vague” when I talk about it and that I should just stop mentioning it if I wasn’t going to give the whole story. I guess I never really felt like I was being vague. In my mind some things don’t need explaining, they’re just obvious. I was in a crappy relationship where I felt stuck, and had severe social anxiety. Maybe things weren’t that obvious though, maybe I was good at hiding it.

In life before Cleveland I was so shy that it was painful to do just about everything. I hated talking to basically anyone I didn’t know. I barely left my house. I was even afraid to ride my bike around the block. But I was in a relationship, I owned a home at young age, and I was “happy” so what else did I need? It’s so weird to even type that stuff. It almost feels like I’m like I have to be talking about someone else’s life because it’s so far from where I’m at right now. Had I not written it then I probably would have pushed it out of my memory. In that post about riding my bike around the block I even wrote about how I couldn’t wait to look back and realize how stupid it was. At the time I hoped I could overcome but I didn’t know just how different life could really be.

I’ll never forget when I moved into my first apartment alone and someone anonymously (OF COURSE) left a snarky comment about what a “downgrade” it was moving to this small apartment. It hurt my feelings at the time because it was a really brave thing for me to go out on my own like that. Less than a year before, prior to getting my license, I hadn’t even been anywhere by myself! Didn’t they understand that it didn’t matter where I was living, the fact was that my life was about to be majorly upgraded? (I also stand by the fact that, huge life changing stuff aside, that was a super cute apartment.)

I’m trying to write more personal posts for the blog. Ya know, share more of whats going on under this green hair of mine. Maybe they’ll inspire you, or maybe they’ll just give you a better idea of who I am, and where I’m at. They’ll definitely be a little discombobulated and ramble-y. Talking about life BC* is uncomfortable for me. I mean, who wants to dig around in their past like that, especially for a bunch of strangers to read but that photo of me on my bike sparked something. I remember looking at photos of other bloggers posed in front of brick walls and wishing I could have photos of myself like that but how could I when simply going in my own fenced in backyard to take outfit photos made me anxious. This photo of me, to me, is a visual representation of how far I’ve come these last few years. I look so confident, like I’m really in my element. I’m super proud of me. I’ve come a long long way.

Here’s to continuing to grow, pushing myself out of my comfort zone as often as possible, and kicking ass!
xoxo

*BC – before Cleveland, obviously! 😉

“10 things” was a series on TDS back in 2012. I’ve since deleted the

makes me smile I thought I was way overdue for another one. Further

Tip Top Cereal Company – abandoned

by Kaylah Stroup October 18, 2016

There haven’t been many abandoned building in my life this year. The few I have gotten have been pretty darn epic (Knox County Poorhouse and Kings Park Psychiatric Center for example!) but compared to the last two years the number of “smalls”, as my friends and I call them, has been… well, small.

Obviously I love the big stuff! Hospitals definitely rank among my favorite abandoned buildings to explore but there’s something special about the smaller buildings. Abandoned houses, storefronts, and the like are all “smalls.” There isn’t as much ground to cover compared to other buildings, and they tend to get passed over by most people but sometimes they’re even more interesting because of that. The amount of foot traffic in larger, more popular buildings means they probably have more graffiti and less things left inside.

That point is kind of void in the building showcased in this post since except for a few random chairs, #theresalwaysachair, it was empty. The whole idea of explaining that was just to say that sometimes even I don’t give enough credit to these small buildings. I had biked, walked, and driven by this one numerous times and hadn’t given it a second thought. Over the weekend Jeff and I happened to be wandering around the area and without even discussing it kind of just made our way inside.

While, like I mentioned above, there wasn’t too much to see inside I’m still super excited about my photos. The last few times I’ve been somewhere abandoned I felt like I wasn’t shooting as well as I knew I could which is super frustrating. This time though, I felt like a creepy old man photographing a beautiful woman while shouting “Yesss, baby! Work it! You’re looking so hot right now!” Please tell me know exactly the sort of image I’m describing. I felt like I was shooting really good photos aaaand upon editing them, I don’t feel any differently. I know to most people all the photos of these places with peeling paint and water damaged walls probably start to look the same but I definitely feel like these are some of my best. Thanks for putting up with me, you guys! 😉 I’ve been feeling a little blue lately so to get photos that I’m really happy with feels nice and is super encouraging.

exiting through a window since a door slammed downstairs. Thanks for the adventure, WIND!

I’d presume most people at one point or another daydream about things they’d do if they were super rich. One of my favorite “If I were rich…” topics to ramble about to anyone who will listen is which abandoned building I’d buy and renovate. My answer changes between a few different ones depending on what day you ask me, and which one of my favorites I’ve most recently visited. While we were inside this one I couldn’t stop thinking about what an awesome house it would make. It just had such a cozy layout, and lots of interesting views. I grew quite fond of this little place. Its had an interesting past in it’s ninety-one years, supposedly at one point it was even a bar downstairs and a cathouse on the second level! Shame it probably won’t last much longer.

my top 3 resources for finding roadside attractions

by Kaylah Stroup October 5, 2016
giant dinosaurs, dinosaur world

One of my absolute favorite things about traveling is visiting tourist traps. I love giant dinosaurs, cheesy gift shops, and relics from the not so distant past. I won’t hesitate to take a few hour drive just to see a huge basket shaped building, and massive roadside animals are basically my favorite thing ever.

I think it would be safe to say my obsession with roadside attractions might have started with “big bunny”. Big bunny is exactly what it sounds like, a giant rabbit. This statue sat in someone’s front yard, surrounded by flowers, with it’s hand up to greet everyone who passed by. It was on the way to my grandma’s house and every time my mom and I would pass him she’d say “wave to big bunny!” and I did, with great enthusiasm. Big bunny sparked something in me, something I can’t seem to shake all these years later.

Since this type of thing is something I blog about quite often I thought it would be fun to share my favorite resources for finding strange roadside attractions, be they murals from movies, old bottles turned into art or cemeteries with famous graves. There are tons of sites out there dedicated to these things but I definitely have favorites I prefer to use.

My number one resource is the Roadside America app. It currently costs $2.99 to download and that unlocks one of the regions. After that you can download additional regions for $1.99 each or unlock them all for $5.99 more. I’ll be the first to admit it’s kind of pricey. Is it worth it though? In my opinion, absolutely! This is one of my most used apps (and one of the very few I’ve ever paid for.) All the information is available on their website, for free, but I still think the ease of the app makes it well worth the price.

My main method of using it is just viewing the “near me” category which lists all roadside attractions close to you in order of distance. You can click on each individual place to see a short description, photos of it, and directions to it. You’re also able to search by city or themes such as “animals”, “ghost towns”, “odd buildings”, “UFO”, etc. You can check places off as been there, or save them to check out at another time.

Basically, if I’m anywhere further than an hour away from my house I’m using the Roadside America app! I can’t even begin to list all the weird, wonderful, and just plain fun places I’ve discovered because of this app.

how to find roadside attractions
weird roadside things, oddities

I am also a big fan of the Roadtrippers app (which is free!) This one is really fun because you can plan trips. You simply put in where you’re going and it will show you spots along the way as well as how much gas money will cost, how many miles and how long the trip will take. The great thing about this app is that you can choose tons of different things for it to show you ranging from sleeping accommodations which can be broken down further into categories such as hotels, motels, unique stays, etc to points of interest from which you can highlight abandoned, film & tv, photo ops, public art and so much more.

I’ve found that it seems to have less of the types of attractions I really enjoy compared to Roadside America but I really enjoy being able to search for other items, like parks (although that doesn’t really have anything to do with the theme of this post, does it?) Unlike Roadside America, Roadtrippers is an app you could use much closer to home and probably still find things you don’t really know about it.

roadside attraction, travel tipssouth of the border, roadside animal

My third tip is to find others with the same interests, Instagram is a great resource for this! It does require a little bit of legwork, and obviously isn’t as straight forward as an app that knows where you are and can show you things nearby but there’s the possibility of finding things that may not be listed on websites or apps.

When I knew I’d be visiting New York City I scoured Alexandra’s blog archives. We have incredibly similar tastes so I knew she’d probably blogged about things I’d be interested in checking out while in the area. While I don’t really have tastes quiet as similar to anyone else as much as I do her, browsing the instagram accounts of people who I know live near where I’ll be is always a great way to find fun spots!

salvation mountain

Still not satisfied?
▴ Browse Atlas Obscura.
▴ Google “weird things in” + the town or state you’ll be visiting. Make sure to browse the image results too!
▴ When on instagram, use local hashtags to find fun spots only locals know about. Most of the time if you search for a city it will show you in the related tags along the top what people are use. For example if you search “Cleveland”, it will show “#cle, #thisisCLE, and #clevelandgram” Those are the hashtags you should be browsing before visiting a city!

Because of these resources I’ve been able to watch the sunrise in a ghost town in the middle of the desert (which is still one of the most magical mornings I have ever had!), visit one of the world’s largest private displays of insects, seen countless dinosaurs, and slept in the three remaining Wigwam Villages among many other things.

Maybe you already knew to utilize all of the resources above, maybe you don’t give a crap about giant dinosaurs but I hope this at least inspires you to get out and search for something new!

This is my dancin’ outfit! Or at least it was the night I wore it. The week before last I went to see Astronautalis (who is still on tour, hitting all fifty states. Go see him and thank me later!) I have very mixed feelings about concerts. Part of me loves them, loves to get sweaty, and dance with lots of strangers buuut the other part of me can’t understand why in the world I would ever think it was a good idea to purchase tickets and commit myself to such activities. I swear, I don’t think there has ever been a concert, even for my favorite band, that I didn’t try to weasel my way out of an hour before the show started. Definitely glad I went though. Not only was Astronautalis awesome, the opening band, Oxymorrons, blew my mind. I seriously LOVED them. I’ve never in my life seen a crowd go so wild for the opener. Their energy was off the charts. You can listen to a bunch of their music on their website but the experience of seeing them live is like nothing you could ever get through a screen.

PS Check out the last time I shared this dress here. For once, it’s actually something different than pictured in this post. 😉

lapel pin collection – updated

by Kaylah Stroup September 21, 2016

Back in October of last year I shared photos of my lapel pin collection which has only continued to grow since then. Even if you don’t remember that post, you’ve probably noticed in my what I wore
posts that I kind of have a thing for accessories. Fun necklaces, rings,
brooches, lapel pins, etc. I love them all. I 100% do not abide by the
quote “before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one
accessory.” I basically do the opposite. Before leaving the house I
usually look in the mirror to make sure I have at least a few eye
catching things on.

Lapel pins are super hip right now. I’m
ashamed to admit that I’m usually kind of sour when things I love become
super popular but there are so many independent companies out there
making them and you can find one for just about any interest you may
have. Seriously, I have one about beach combing! I’ve welcomed this boom with open arms. I love finding new brands
with lapel pins. They’re small, and usually cost less then $10 a piece
so they’re easy to collect. They’re also a really awesome way to support
creative folks and their businesses (…at least that’s how I justify having so many!)

A few weeks back I upgraded the bulletin board I display my pins on. The old one, a three dollar score from the Target dollar spot, finally ran out of room. I was able to find something with a little bit more space in the same place, the dollar section at Target! You just can’t beat it for three bucks! My new one holds a bunch more, and displays them beautifully.

It would be crazy hard to link to where each of the pins are from so
instead I’ll link to some of the folks I own pins from and then you can
blame me when you blow all your money on pins!

Two Guns + The Apache Death Cave

by Kaylah Stroup September 19, 2016
Arizona

I originally found Two Guns on Roadside America back in 2014. It was right on the way to where we were heading except we were majorly crunched for time. We had reservations and had to check into our wigwam before the front office closed for the night.   But Two Guns!!!! It looked amazing. We had to stop, there was no two ways about it. Jeff and I agreed we’d only spend ten minutes there so we both got out of the car and literally ran from building to building snapping photos like crazy. The ten minutes was up in no time at all. We got back to the car gasping for breath and full of adrenaline. My pictures weren’t that great but it’s honestly one of my favorite memories from that whole trip.

To this day, we still talk about that visit all the time. I’ve even exclaimed that I want to get married there someday. They’re just some silly abandoned buildings but they became something special because our brief visit was so fun.

Each trip out west Jeff and I try to take a different route so that we aren’t just doing the exact same thing over and over. So far, other than the airport we fly into, we’ve done a pretty great job at this. A few days before we left for this year’s trip Jeff text me to say he had just realized we’d be near Two Guns. Swinging by this year would only add seven minutes to our drive so obviously it was a necessity to stop and actually take our time there.

two guns arizona, abandoned, graffitiabandoned, arizonastickers, street art, denture sticker, arrested development

When I first got into geocaching at the beginning of this year I was blown away by the fact that there are basically geocaches everywhere. One of my first thoughts was “I wonder if there was a geocache at Two Guns!” Sure enough there is but it’s WAY cooler than I could have ever imagined. Since the second we read the description, Jeff and I have been basically frothing at the mouth to get this thing. The cache isn’t near the abandoned buildings, instead it’s underground… in the Apache Death Cave. I won’t go into it but the cave has a crazy interesting history, as made quite obvious by the name. You can read more about it here. There’s even more insanity not listed in that article if you still feel like digging around!

We wandered around the abandoned stuff for a while, getting all the shots we weren’t able to take on our first visit then it came time to find the cache. We took the short hike over to where we thought the cave might be and sure enough there she was. The photo below shows where you climb down. In older photos I found on google it appears that those logs used to have boards going across so the walk down was fairly easy but these days you choose a log and hope your balance is good enough. Jeff took this really cute photo of me walking up the logs!

You guys, I love adventure. I like exploring new places, and I like a bit of danger. I love when my adrenaline is pumping and I talk a big game but when it comes right down to it, sometimes I’m a giant weenie. I was terrified in this cave. Not because of bats, or the dark but because I was afraid rocks would fall and we’d be trapped. I was afraid the cave, which is said to be cursed, would end up being our one final adventure.

Jeff, on the other hand, basically had the time of his life in this cave. He even said “I think I can retire from geocaching now.” because seriously, how could a cache be in a cooler spot than this one?! Despite being afraid, I was definitely enjoying myself. It was a true adventure! How many people can say they explored a real cave in the middle of the desert? Not somewhere you have to pay an admission fee, and have a guide. But a reeeeal cave. IT. WAS. AWESOME.

geocache, arizona, two guns, cave

After making it out of the cave alive, wahooo, we poked around the property a bit more checking out the ruins of buildings. We didn’t get a chance to see this area last year so it was all new to us. Then when I started researching the cave after leaving I realized we missed a few more buildings that hold fairly significant history here. Guess that just means we have to go back again…

Until next time, Two Guns!!

what I wore : pink glasses

When I was a lot younger my brother’s wife, who was his new-ish girlfriend at the time, and I bonded over the fact we hated the color pink. “Ewwww pink!” I was a tomboy through and through. I despised all things “girly”. It was so awesome for me to finally find someone else who was anti-pink. Sometime after this I saw her in a pink shirt and felt so betrayed (the same kind of betrayal I felt when my brother admitted he like country music after all the years of us making fun of it together. Haha!) Alas, here I am now in what has become one of my favorite colors. I’m mildly obsessed with this baby pink color and how it looks against my green hair. It’s just such a pretty combination… which is why when it came time to choose my first pair of glasses I chose a pink pair!

I guess this is growing up, you have a birthday and the same week learn your vision is basically garbage. Back in 2014 I got prescription reading glasses just to take some strain off my eyes since I’m always on the computer. I kind of thought I’d just be fine for a while after that but I was having trouble even seeing Netflix movie titles from my bed so it was time for another check up. Basically I had trouble reading all the letters, which isn’t as much embarrassing as it is frustrating. Why you no work, eyeballs!? My optometrist, who I looooove, showed me what I’d be able to see with glasses and I was blown away. I could not wait to get a pair.

I picked out from Bevy in milky mauve from Classic Specs. One week later aaaand my mind is seriously blown how much of a difference these bad boys make. I honestly had no idea my vision was that bad. I mean, it’s not a crazy strong prescription or anything but I can actually browse Netflix from bed now. I can read street signs better, and holy cow everything just *POPS*! It’s definitely taking some getting used to wearing them all the time but I’m very curious to see if this will help my headaches. I imagine it will because I apparently had been straining to see just about everything without even realizing it.

So, uh, consider this your reminder – if you haven’t been to the optometrist in a while, it might be time to make an appointment!

my 26th birthday party

by Kaylah Stroup August 3, 2016

Most years I opt not have a birthday party. I’ll go out to my parents (because that’s not an option. They’d kill me if I didn’t!) but I ask them not to invite anyone else. I’m not crazy about being the center of attention, and I appreciate just spending time with them alone. This year when my mom asked “Do you want me to invite anyone else?” My response was “Fiiiiine!” Which doesn’t quite answer the question but makes it seem like I wasn’t secretly really excited to spend my birthday with my nieces and nephew who I really seem to be bonding with this summer.

I had been looking forward to it all week. Jeff and I planned to head out early in the morning so I could get my annual birthday outfit photos before anyone else got there. We ended up having to take a huge detour and when we finally got close to my parents it started to rain. My hair and the rain are not friends. Some people deal with frizz, I deal with the complete opposite. My hair goes flat flat flaaat when there is moisture in the air so I was not pleased. Luckily it stopped shortly before we got there and I got my photos taken with no problem at all. Disaster averted.

Right as the food was being taken off the grill a car pulled into the driveway. I probably would have been surprised to see my friends hanging out of the windows waving if my sister in law hadn’t just asked my mom “So, are Kaylah’s friends not coming?” My mom shot her the death look, and I just turned my head like “Oh! Didn’t hear that!” Haha. Despite not being surprised, I was super excited to have them there. But here’s where the real fun starts…

We start eating, and the thunder that had been rumbling for the past couple hours picks up. Rain starts to fall… a little bit harder… and a little bit harder until it’s finally POURING. My mom is starting to freak out again about how everything is ruined, and at anyone else’s house I’d probably agree but a torrential downpour is exactly what I wanted for my birthday. I’ve talked about it very briefly in the past (here!) and it hasn’t happened in a few years but when the rain comes down really hard at my parent’s house it creates a slide on the hill. All the water runs down in one stream, straight into the pond. When this happens it’s time to get dirty! You run, drop to your butt, and sliiiide. It’s honestly one of my favorite things in the world.

My twelve year old nephew was chomping at the bit to start sliding, and of course my five nieces were as well. They know it exactly what it means when it starts raining like that at grandpa and grandma’s house! I hesitated for a second figuring none of my friends would want to get absolutely filthy with me, especially considering the fact that nobody bought extra clothes, myself included. I ended up borrowing a shirt and sweats from my mom, and grabbed some clothes for my friends as well.

It was a BLAST. Everyone except Jake joined in! I’ve been dating Jeff for just over two years now and in that time it hasn’t rained good enough to slide down the hill. Totally not a big deal because he doesn’t like to get dirty anyway. I can’t even convince him to play in waterfalls with me! He’s just not a water dude. But on Sunday, even Jeff was sliding down the hill!! You guys, this is a huuuuge deal!

The rain stopped very shortly after we started sliding so the hill dried up pretty quickly. We weren’t able to slide as far anymore. After a few failed attempts at prolonging the fun with the hose and buckets of water from the pond, I gave up. Then “I’m just going in to rinse off in the pond” turned into spending a couple of hours floating around and taking turns jumping onto a mattress my dad blew up for the occasion.

Yep, easily the best birthday party I’ve ever had and I think that’s saying a lot. My mom has always thrown me some pretty dope parties but that crazy rain and my friends really took it over the top this year. I still can’t believe that the weather worked out so perfectly, and more than that I really can’t believe my friends were down to get muddy and play in the pond with me, although I’m not sure how anyone could resist jumping onto a huge air mattress.
xoxo

Also, there were pony rides at my party too?! So, uh, we’re gonna have to work pretty hard to top this next year…
