what I wore : polka dots

by Kaylah Stroup October 13, 2014

dress- It’s A-boat Time Dress via Modcloth
belt – snagged from another dress
necklace – Jesiiii
tights – Target
shoes – Le Bunny Bleu

I’ve somehow managed to keep this dress in my closet for over a year yet only wear it one time before this. The first time I wore it was actually around this time last year when I was in Philadelphia. Since then it’s sat untouched until my big closet clean out sale (which I still cannot believe went SO well!) I rediscovered it and decided it needed to be worn. It’s such a nice cut, if only it were black and white striped… Hah!

This outfit shoot did no go as planned. First a cop, who I’ve decided might not have even been a cop at all just someone strange in a uniform, walked up the road to where I was and just stopped about fifteen feet away from me. He started pacing around, looking up at me every few seconds, just sending off weird vibes. I tried waiting him out but eventually freaked myself out enough I just moved to the other side of the park. Better safe than sorry, right?  Especially if he wasn’t really a cop. There are crazy people out there, certainly ones crazier than that heavily tattooed girl alone at the park taking pictures of herself! Hehe. Then it started to rain, and then I broke my remote. Blergh. But I was pretty pumped when I got home, went through the photos and realized I liked enough of them to post! So it’s not all bad, always a silver lining.

7 tips for maintaining bright hair color

by Kaylah Stroup September 30, 2014

For eleven straight I’ve been dyeing my hair unnatural colors. During this time I’ve written numerous hair related posts including how to bleach your hair, two tips for switching colors, and my must have hair products. Today I’ll be sharing how to maintain your color. All of the hair dyes you would use to dye your hair a funky color are semi-permanent and fade no matter what. In my outfit posts you can see my hair color is never the same more than once, even daily my hair color changes due to rinsing. Fading is inevitable but here are seven easy tips to help make your color last.

1 // Good color starts with healthy hair. While bleaching your hair isn’t the best way to start, it is necessary to do in order to achieve a bright color.  Unhealthy, damaged hair will not hold color well. You may make it from black hair to pink in a week by bleaching your hair twice a day but that pink won’t hold because your hair is in rough shape. Be patient with your journey from dark hair to colored hair. Make sure to nurture your hair. Hair masks and repair products are your best friends! (I shared a few of my favorites here!)

2 // After healthy hair, the next most important thing is a high-quality hair dye. I highly recommend Punky Colours and Special Effects. I’m sure there are other great dyes, but those are the two I always turn to despite trying many others. Since those brands do NOT damage your hair, it’s totally fine, and really highly recommended that you leave it in for much longer than the recommended time. The packaging usually says something “let sit for 20 minutes before rinsing.” If you leave your hair dye in for 20 minutes that color is not going to last very long at all. I normally try to leave my hair color in for a minimum of three hours. The longer, the better! Since I always mix my dyes with equal parts conditioner my hair is also being nourished while I wait on the dye to set.

3// Rinse with cool water. This is actually my best tip. If you skip all other tips (please don’t, especially healthy hair!) this is the one to follow. Warm water opens the hair cuticle allowing the color to escape. I’m not saying you need to wash your hair with ice cold water, but in reality, the colder the better. I wash and rinse my hair in as cold of water as I can stand, toss it up in a towel then crank that water up for the rest of my shower.

Cold water also helps reduce bleeding if you have more than one color, otherwise your hair color will just turn into a mess similar to when you mix different colors of paint together.

While we’re on the subject of water, it should be noted that swimming in chlorinated water is awful for your hair color. (But hey, if you want to fade your hair, go for it! Check out this video I made for an idea of how badly pool water will affect your hair!) For good measures, just keep your hair dry as much as possible and avoid hot water!

4 // Avoid shampoos with sulfates and styling products with alcohol. Sulfates and alcohol-based products are two huuuuge things that will fade any hair color. Sulfate free shampoos can be kind of tricky to find sometimes, but they’re definitely worth switching to. I recommend Sparks Color Care Sulfate-Free Shampoo + Conditioner.

Even with sulfate free shampoo, you should still try to cut back on shampoo use. Shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils, as well as the color. If you’re lucky enough to not have super greasy hair (like me!) skip washing every other day and use a dry shampoo on your off days. My dry shampoo of choice is Aveda Shampure. (also on Amazon) It’s a little bit more expensive than others I’ve found and tried but easily the best!

When I shampoo I try to only apply it to the roots, where my hair is most likely to become greasy, and only avoid the ends of my hair since that’s what normally fades most quickly anyway.

5 // Mix some color into your conditioner. If you add hair dye to your conditioner you’ll be depositing a little bit of color every time you condition. This only applies if your hair is a solid color, or a mix of the same colors in different shades obviously. This is also a great idea because you’re able to leave conditioner in your hair for longer without running the risk of fading it. Healthier hair + brighter color = win/win!

Alternatively, you could try a color depositing conditioner! There are lots of new ones on the market these days. Keracolor comes in 13 different colors + has excellent reviews. My dye brand of choice, Punky Colours, also just came out with one! There are currently 11 different colors + it’s a few bucks cheaper.

6 // Avoid heat styling. If you must heat style (hey, I feel ya), use a protectant! This is my personal favorite, I’ve been using it for a while now. When I’m using my curling wand, and not just my blow dryer, I also add some argan oil to the tips which helps protect the color as well.

7 // Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Just like your skin, the sun isn’t necessarily good for your hair color. Try wearing a hat if you’ll be spending a long time in the sun. There are also UV protection sprays for your hair. I use Sparks Color Care Protecting Spray. Highly recommended!

Keep in mind that just choosing one of the above points isn’t going to save your hair color. If you’ve switched to a sultfate free shampoo but still wash your hair every day in hot water, the fact you’re using a sulfate free shampoo really doesn’t even matter anymore.

A combination of all of the above should help you maintain your hair color a bit longer than normal.

This is one of the few dresses that isn’t black and white striped that managed to survive my most recent closet clean out. (Shop my closet sale goes live tomorrow! Eeee!) My style has changed so drastically over the past few years. It’s funny because it happens so slowly that I don’t really even realize it’s happening until one day nearly everything in my closet just isn’t me anymore or is something I no longer can figure out how to style.

That’s actually one of the main reasons I like to document my outfits, to watch my style evolve. Things I used to wear still look cute to me, but they no longer feel right on me. I tried this dress on with a few different cardigans, tights, and shoe combos before deciding on this one because it just felt good.

early 2013 // late 2013 // 2014

This outfit is cute but still super practical, which is all that I care about anymore. I was able to climb around on the drift wood because of my palladium boots, which surprisingly look awesome with a dress! Dresses and boots paired together are kind of a new thing for me. This was probably the very first time ever that I have been ecstatic about how they looked together. The dress is cute and feminine but long enough that I don’t have to worry about people seeing my butt while climbing around and picking up things for my found on the beach project. Plus the color is the best, which probably is what really accounts for it’s lengthy stay in my wardrobe.
Anyway, enough rambling about personal style. Hope you’re having an excellent Tuesday!

xoxo

PS. Happy first day of autumn!

Y’all, the weather has taken a turn here in Ohio! Not that that is anything out of the ordinary since the weather in Northeast Ohio is notoriously crazy but what I really mean is that fall has hit! Wahoo!! I’ve been enjoying days filled with hot chocolate, hoodies, and empty beaches. It’s pretty incredible how quickly it changed, but I’m certainly not complaining. It’s my favorite time of the year and this is kind of my favorite outfit. I’ve worn it just over a handful of times already since the weather has changed. The best thing about it is that I actually have multiple pairs of overalls and tons of striped shirts so I can basically wear a clean version of this same outfit all the time. Haha.
On another note, can we just take a second to talk about how small the pockets in ladies jeans are?! What am I even supposed to put in there? I actually had a bunch of quarters in my pocket (for laundry, I don’t normally just carry around a tiny pocket full of quarters, promise!) and I lost some because those pockets are so darn useless. I saw a thing the other day making fun of how girls always respond to the compliment “nice dress!” with “It has pockets!” But dang man, if womens pants had pockets that held anything we wouldn’t be so pumped about dresses that have actual useful pockets! Kind of a strange thing to rant about I guess, but it’s silly that I can’t even fit my keys in any of my pants pockets.
Hope you have a most fabulous Wednesday!

what I wore : polka dots + puppies!

crop top – Charlotte Russe
skirt – See You Round Skirt c/o Modcloth

boots – Forever 21 (last year)
pins – Good Vibes Only via Pintrill, Explorer via Explorer’s Press
I cleaned out my closet last week. It was over stuffed and a lot of the things inside of it hadn’t been touched since I moved in. I packed a box full of things to take to the thrift store, a laundry basket full of things to possibly include in a sale (you interested?), and found a whole bunch of things I had completely forgotten about. This skirt was in the “maybe” pile until I tried it on and fell back in love. It’s a great length, it’s comfortable and best of all, it doesn’t need ironed before I wear it. Is it lazy of me to admit that was actually one of the requirements the things I kept had to meet, that I didn’t need to iron them before wearing them? It’s not necessarily that I mind ironing things before I wear them, it’s that I don’t like things getting wrinkly while I wear them.
The dogs were all about invading my photos. Crum is actually just in love with me. That dog seriously never leaves my side when I visit my parents. No matter where I go, he follows. I was sitting on a rock in the pond while my nephew looked for cool rocks. Who was by my side? Crum, just standing in the water. That dog is too sweet. Although getting slobber all over my sweater isn’t something I really appreciate, he sure does have a massive tongue!

xoxo

PS. You can see this skirt styled another way here from 2013.

Oops! I took another accidental outfit post hiatus. You guys, I’ll get the hang of this again. I swear! It’s so easy to forget to do, or not make time to do once you fall out of the habit. But I really do miss outfit posts, and I hope you miss seeing them.

It’s also easy to forget to take outfit pictures when your wardrobe has changed significantly. I think I talked about it once before, how I grew up having “nice” clothes and “play” clothes and even though I’m an adult now I still can’t seem to merge the two. Since my two main hobbies are urban exploration and biking, I spend most of my time in tank tops and shorts not pretty dresses. I’m normally covered in dirt and somehow always have bike grease on my leg. I miss wearing my “nice” clothes though. Jeff’s sister’s boyfriend hosted a white linen party last week and since I literally don’t own any white (I mean, I have tons of black and white stripes… but that doesn’t count) this is what I wore. It felt really nice to put on something pretty. But hey, maybe sometime soon I’ll shoot an outfit true to what you’d find if you encountered me out on a bike ride, bike grease and all!

Anyway, THIS DRESS! Holy smokes. I’ve been stalking it forever. It finally went on sale and I went for it despite being nervous about the mixed reviews. It fits like a dream! I feel so great in it. Any item of clothing that makes me feel cute and dainty, as well as powerful and sexy at the same time is a win in my book!

Well, would ya look at that, another outfit featuring this darn coat. Sorry ’bout it. I’m obsessssssed. I haven’t left the house without it since it got here. I’m not sure I’ve ever loved a piece of clothing so much, except maybe this camera bag, which I’m sure you noticed I’ve been wearing an awful lot in outfit posts. I’ve basically been using it exclusively. I even sold some of my other camera bags since they were getting ignored. As a camera bag hoarder, I think that speaks pretty highly of this particular bag.

Hope you’re having an excellent Tuesday!

My five must-have hair products!

by Kaylah Stroup January 23, 2014

Whenever I post about my hair I always get more than a few questions about how it looks so healthy despite what I put it through. I’ve been dyeing my hair unnatural colors consecutively for nearly ten years now so its safe to say I’ve found a handful of products I swear by!

1, 2 + 3 // Coconut oil,  Garnier Whole Blends Nourishing Mask, and EVA NYC Therapy Session Hair Mask are three products I like to use before bleaching my hair (not at the same time, of course.) They each smell wonderful and leave my hair so much more smooth, shiny and manageable than before applying. Before bleaching your hair you want it to be in as good of shape as possible, using a hair mask will definitely help. Of course, after dying your hair you could use one as well but since they all need rinsed out in the end there is the chance of your color fading so I recommend using them often in the days leading up to the day you plan on bleaching.

4 // Hask Placenta. Yep, you read that right. With a main ingredient like placenta, sheep’s placenta to be exact, I can understand any hesitations you have with this product. I’ve been using it for years though and couldn’t be happier with the results. I spray it on every day before I brush my hair out after showers. It works wonders when my hair is less than manageable after bleaching and keeps my hair shiny, always. It is my ABSOLUTE favorite hair product.

5 // Boar hair brush. I picked up a boar hair brush at Target one day just because I needed a new brush. I got in the car, started brushing my hair and immediately realized this new brush was making my hair reeeeeal greasy. Come to find out, boar hair brushes are great for distributing your scalps natural oils to the rest of your hair. The thing is I have very fine hair so this brush makes my hair embarrassingly greasy. This was actually a really great discovery though. Now I always brush my hair thoroughly with this brush before bleaching my hair so the bleach does as little damage as possible. Your oils help protect your hair.

Other than those things I don’t use too much else. I’m a big fan of Sparks Color Care Sulfate-Free Shampoo + Conditioner which are awesome for helping maintain my hair color.

These products won’t save super damaged hair and they’re not miracle workers but they definitely help keep my hair super shiny and as healthy as possible. What are some of your must-have hair products? I love trying new hair masks!
