This is my dancin’ outfit! Or at least it was the night I wore it. The week before last I went to see Astronautalis (who is still on tour, hitting all fifty states. Go see him and thank me later!) I have very mixed feelings about concerts. Part of me loves them, loves to get sweaty, and dance with lots of strangers buuut the other part of me can’t understand why in the world I would ever think it was a good idea to purchase tickets and commit myself to such activities. I swear, I don’t think there has ever been a concert, even for my favorite band, that I didn’t try to weasel my way out of an hour before the show started. Definitely glad I went though. Not only was Astronautalis awesome, the opening band, Oxymorrons, blew my mind. I seriously LOVED them. I’ve never in my life seen a crowd go so wild for the opener. Their energy was off the charts. You can listen to a bunch of their music on their website but the experience of seeing them live is like nothing you could ever get through a screen.

PS Check out the last time I shared this dress here. For once, it’s actually something different than pictured in this post. 😉

This weather, you guys! Jean jacket weather! Very clearly my favorite. Prepare for nearly all outfit posts this next month and a half to include my jean jacket. I promise not to talk about it all the time but I am just so excited that the weather is finally cooling down. It’s so nice to be able to wear all my favorite clothes again without roasting. I don’t know about you but I feel like I’m at my peak awesomeness in the fall.

So, remember in my how I style my hair post from last week I mentioned getting a curling wand from NuMe? Well here are the first photos of my hair after using it. I still feel like I have a little bit to learn about it and how to most effectively curl my hair but I’m obsessed! The results last so much longer than when I just use foam rollers. I’m kiiiind of obsessed with my own hair. Like I mentioned in that last hair post, I’ve always really only liked the color so to actually like how it’s styled is a rad feeling! For the first time ever, I don’t have that urge to chop my hair off. I definitely plan on sharing more photos and information on the wand in the coming weeks so stay tuned for that!

PS. Here is the last time I shared this outfit back in 2014. Not too much has changed! 😛

how I style my hair

by Kaylah Stroup September 13, 2016
the dainty squid hair, green hair

I’ve talked about my hair a lot, a lot, a lot on the blog. Really, the main ~thing~ about my hair is the color, I’m not ashamed to admit nothing else too impressive is going on. Genetics have “blessed” me with fine hair is insanely straight. While lots of people would probably kill for my straight hair, I’d gladly trade it without a second thought. (I know, I know, you always want whatever you don’t have when it comes to hair!) I’ve never really been a fan of my hair other than the colors I pizazz it up with so when I get comments or emails asking how I style my hair it feels like a real victory!  I thought it’d be fun to share a little bit about how I achieve my looks.

My daily hair products + a little bit about what they do…
▴ Sparks Color Care Sulfate-Free Shampoo + Conditioner – My shampoo and conditioner for the last few months. It doesn’t lather as much as I’m used to with shampoos but still leaves my hair feeling clean.
▴ Pantene Pro-V Serious Repair Detangler  – I only recently started using this since deciding to grow my hair out. It makes my hair sooo easy to brush out when it’s wet. If I only use one product for the day after washing, it’s this!
▴ Hask Placenta – My all time favorite hair product. It’s a leave in conditioning treatment. I apply generously to wet hair.
▴ Pantene Pro-V Smooth Heat Protecting Spray – A must if you’re doing any kind of heat styling.
▴ Evo Love Touch – This just goes on the ends of my hair on days I feel like it could use a little extra shine. It smells SO good.
▴ Sparks Color Care Protecting Spray – Think of it as sunscreen for your hair. Helps fight fading and makes a world of difference if you’re going to be out in the sun. I apply one spray to the top of my head when my hair is wet and brush through. A little goes a very long way, too much and my hair is greasy.
▴ Pantene Pro-V Non-Aerosol Hairspray – Nothing too special, just my current hairspray of choice. I normally only use it on my bangs to help keep them in place.

So, how I style hair is depends on what length it is. Uh, duh? I’ve been rocking some fairly short hair for a few years now so we’ll start with that. For the longest time I really had no idea what to do with my hair and simply just blow dried it without any further styling. Then I discovered that a round brush would make a world of difference!

When my hair is short I will simply separate it into three layers, basically just top, middle, and bottom, and blow dry each layer using the round brush to achieve a bit of a curl. I start on the bottom layer and tend to pay the most attention to the front since it’s usually the longest.

It’s nothing special, definitely one of those putting lots of effort into looking like you just woke up things. Without doing this my hair is literally pin straight. Not the good kind of straight either, like stuck to my head straight. A round brush is a necessity for me when my hair is short. Eventually it gets to a length when this no longer works, or rather it just takes too long so I move onto my next style…
the dainty squid, kaylah doolan, cleveland fashionb blogcurls from foam rollers taken out the previous hour.

Spoiler alert: my long hair styling is nothing more than the result of foam rollers!

Right now I’m rocking the longest hair I’ve had in quite a few years which means I’m having to figure out what in the world to do with it. Blow drying it with the round brush everyday is out of the question. It takes up too much time. My hair isn’t even that long but once it gets past a certain point I swear, the amount of time it takes to blow dry doubles. I can’t even imagine what it’s like for you ladies with actual long hair. I prefer to use my blow dryer as little as possible, that heat isn’t good for your hair.

After towel drying my hair, I apply the products listed near the beginning of this post. I brush it out and then scrunch it up with my fingers. From there I go about my business as normal. I make breakfast, drink coffee, sit down and answer some emails. By the time I’m done doing all my morning things my hair is nearly dry so I will blow dry upside down just to get a little bit more volume and toss in some foam rollers. I’ve had this set since 2013, and they’re still going strong. I use the largest size, the pink ones, for my whole head of hair once it’s around shoulder length. If it’s shorter I’ll use a mix of the largest, pink, and the next size down, green.

How long I leave them in depends on what I’m doing that day / what time I need to be ready. On days I work at the flower shop and have to be out of the house relatively early they only stay in an hour or so. On days that I don’t have anywhere to be and my errands aren’t urgent, the rollers might stay in two hours or longer. If I have to run outside I toss a scarf of my head. After I take them out I’ll shake my hair out and run my fingers through the curls. It’s usually pretty crazy for the first half an hour but since my hair just looooves to be straight the curls settle down quickly. TA-DA!

below:  foam roller curls with shorter hair. More photos of this hair here.
the dainty squid, green hair

No matter the length of my hair or what I’m planning to do with it, I always curl my bangs with a curling iron. I own this one. It heats up quickly, and on a low setting does exactly what I’d like
for my bangs – a tiny bit of volume so they’re not stuck to my forehead!

I had this post finished and ready to go live when I got a curling wand from NuMe in the mail. Isn’t it just like a curling iron? NO! It’s safe to say I’m obsessed. I’m still not super stoked about using heat styling on my hair. But the cuuuuurls! My goodness, y’all! Can you say dream hair?! I can’t wait to share photos soon. I’ll be back with a full report on how I like this thing oh so soon.

what I wore : stripes forever

This dress *might* be one of the oldest things currently in my wardrobe. You can even see it featured in this post from 2012 (which is honestly still one of my favorite outfit posts on here. I sure miss taking photos with my BFF!) I guess four years isn’t really very long to keep something but I tend to get bored of things quickly. Just couldn’t let go of this silly striped dress though. Although I refused to get rid of it, I also really wasn’t wearing it much either. It’s a heavier fabric and after a few washes it was covered in pills. I know it’s not a huge deal but it just looked so messy. It drove me crazy, especially with how bad it was on my hip from my camera bag constantly rubbing.I was organizing a basket full of random things in my laundry room last week when I found a fabric shaver.* I immediately threw on the dress and got to work. Ten minutes later I basically have a brand new dress!! I want to go through every single thing I own and get rid of pills. Off the top of my head, I’m not sure I can think of anything more satisfying than shaving the pills off your clothes.

xoxo

*I have this exact model. It’s under ten bucks, and is basically a lifesaver!

As if I wasn’t going to eventually own this dress! It’s covered in cactus, and y’all know I feel about cactus. Not to mention the fact the name of the dress, The Blogger the Better, is almost like they’re subtly poking fun at the fact that errrry blogger out there is going be posting photos of themselves in it. I’ve got no shame in my cactus game though! Seriously, look at my plants. They’re cute cutest.

Can’t say I wasn’t hesitant because of the mixed reviews and the fact that it was backless. I hate strapless bras, and my girls are too big for me to go without. Just glancing at the product photos I didn’t realize that it had a built in bra. It’s surprisingly structured! There was even a photo from this set where I was like “daaaang girl, looking fiiiiiine!” I didn’t include it though because it was an obviously gratuitous boob photo. Haha! The second I put it on I knew it was a keeper. This dress is amaaaazing. It’s a little late in the season but I found the perfect summer dress.

Hope you’re having a lovely day!

When I was a lot younger my brother’s wife, who was his new-ish girlfriend at the time, and I bonded over the fact we hated the color pink. “Ewwww pink!” I was a tomboy through and through. I despised all things “girly”. It was so awesome for me to finally find someone else who was anti-pink. Sometime after this I saw her in a pink shirt and felt so betrayed (the same kind of betrayal I felt when my brother admitted he like country music after all the years of us making fun of it together. Haha!) Alas, here I am now in what has become one of my favorite colors. I’m mildly obsessed with this baby pink color and how it looks against my green hair. It’s just such a pretty combination… which is why when it came time to choose my first pair of glasses I chose a pink pair!

I guess this is growing up, you have a birthday and the same week learn your vision is basically garbage. Back in 2014 I got prescription reading glasses just to take some strain off my eyes since I’m always on the computer. I kind of thought I’d just be fine for a while after that but I was having trouble even seeing Netflix movie titles from my bed so it was time for another check up. Basically I had trouble reading all the letters, which isn’t as much embarrassing as it is frustrating. Why you no work, eyeballs!? My optometrist, who I looooove, showed me what I’d be able to see with glasses and I was blown away. I could not wait to get a pair.

I picked out from Bevy in milky mauve from Classic Specs. One week later aaaand my mind is seriously blown how much of a difference these bad boys make. I honestly had no idea my vision was that bad. I mean, it’s not a crazy strong prescription or anything but I can actually browse Netflix from bed now. I can read street signs better, and holy cow everything just *POPS*! It’s definitely taking some getting used to wearing them all the time but I’m very curious to see if this will help my headaches. I imagine it will because I apparently had been straining to see just about everything without even realizing it.

So, uh, consider this your reminder – if you haven’t been to the optometrist in a while, it might be time to make an appointment!

what I wore : twenty-six

by Kaylah Stroup August 2, 2016

Oh hey guys, what’s up? Did you hear the news? ITS MY BIRTHDAY! Wahoo! The big twenty-six this year! I don’t think anyone actually calls it “the big…” but it kind of feels like a big one. I’m on the other side of twenty-five now… and it feels exactly the same.

So far no special plans. I’ll probably spend my day wandering around the beach, hanging out at my new favorite coffee shop, and eating all my favorite foods! Literally went out last night and bought myself broccoli for today. Never in a million years would I have guessed that some day broccoli would be my favorite food, the one that I choose for my birthday lunch! But hey, that’s life. Always full of weird, delicious, surprises.

Here’s to starting off the next year of my life right!
xoxo

Just because I love silly traditions here’s a peek back at previous year’s birthday outfit posts ft. balloons! 2013,  2014+ 2015! Some things really never seem to change…

what Professor wore

by Kaylah Stroup August 1, 2016
Pets by Carvas, cat bowtie
bowtie by PETS by Carvas

A while ago in my Friday Favorites I featured a cat collar with a little bowtie on it… because dressed up pets will always be my favorite, duh! Then last week I got an email from the maker of that collar wanting to know if I’d like one for as a thank you. I accepted, and chose one I thought would look good on Professor. I figured I’d share a photo on instagram to thank them for their generosity but once I saw Professor in it there was no way I could keep all this cuteness to myself.

I was a little worried that he would scratch at it but I don’t think he has any idea that there is something different on his neck from his regular collar. Squid doesn’t wear a collar but Professor normally wears one with a little bell because he’s a trouble maker. With his bowtie he looks like a real professor! Plus the color really brings out his eyes. I took so many darn photos of this kitty. I could just eat him up. Anyway, enough talk! It’s time for photos…

Hope you’re having a lovely Monday! Thanks again to PETS by Carvas for making Professor look even cuter than normal. Seeing him in it makes me smile every single time. I’m definitely going to need to get this guy another one.

I am finally at the point in my life where I’m understanding how to dress for summer. I have struggled for SO long with how to look cute, and not just roast. I’ve found a handful of dresses, this one from Old Navy included, that actually look great with no other accessories added. By “accessories” I mean cardigan, belt, etc not pins or necklace because those are always a necessity in my book. This is probably the weirdest thing to be frustrated with but I seriously feel like everyone makes buying clothes look so easy. I love shopping, and I go fairly often but I rarely ever buy anything because I’m so picky about how everything fits. I find so many items I love, then I try them on and realize “yeah, this isn’t easy enough to wear, nevermind.” For the first time I actually feel like I have a solid wardrobe of clothes I can just throw on and feel confident in. It took a reeeeally long time but it’s happening! Woo! This will be the year I learn to love summertime, staying cool and lookin’ cute, mark my words!
