One of the best things about having a blog is being able to look back at your old posts. Similarly, one of the worst things about having a blog is being able to look back at your old posts. Heh! I often get lost in my own archives. I just keep clicking and clicking… and cliiicking. Things change so rapidly, even if it doesn’t really seem like it, its fun to look back and get a peek at what things used to be like. I have a love / hate relationship with my old outfit photos. I think a lot of them are kind of embarrassing but I’m happy to have documented them. I may look back now and think “Oh my goodness, what were you thinking?” but at the same time I feel very “Hah! You do you, girl!” about them too. It’s kind of hard to explain but a lot of those old photos it’s like I’m just looking at someone else.

Looking back at all those old photos has shown me how far my style has come in the past few years. I feel like I have a lot more of a consistent style, and that it’s a lot more wearable. Instead of buying things that have a really awesome print or whatever but maybe aren’t that practical I tend to purchase things that I know I’ll be able to wear often, that are comfortable, and that truly fit my lifestyle. No more super short dressed just because the pattern rocks! These photos, in particular, I feel show off that new Kaylah style. Maybe I’ll laugh at this outfit in another few years but I feel like it looks like it was put together by someone who has a pretty good idea of what works for them. It’s cute, it’s cozy, and that’s all I care about.

I do have to admit, these boots are slightly out of my comfort zone. I’m kiiind of obsessed with them and how badass I feel in them though. I’m hoping it will be like my intro to lipstick where I felt a little bit strange wearing it the first handful of times but eventually it just became totally normal. I tend to feel more comfortable in shoes that I can run in. I don’t know what that’s about, it’s not like I ever have to run anywhere. Maybe just a weird built in brain safety feature? I’m new-ish to heels of any sort and these are my very first pair of ankle boots but daaaang they look good. I don’t know about you, but I feel like a BOSS walking in heels. I know, someone out there is snickering at me thinking these heels are high but they are for me! I’m currently eyeing up this pink pair of ankle boots. I’ve put together so many outfits in my head with them already.
Happy Tuesday!
xoxo

what I wore : stripes, again!

by Kaylah Stroup January 24, 2017

cardigan – dream of the crop cardigan via Modcloth

shoes – White Mountain oxfords via Amazon

Super cute black and white striped dress that fits like a glove for under 20 buckeronis? Heck yeah! It obviously loses some cool points for not having pockets but still! This beauty will definitely be a staple in my summer wardrobe. Paired with my trusty jean jacket? Yeeeah. It’s gonna be perfect.

Speaking of summer, Cleveland got hit with some really crazy weather over the weekend. January 21st and it’s 60 degrees? I’ll take it! I was comfortable outside with bare legs! I was even comfortable without my cardigan on. A Sleeveless dress! In January! In Ohio! WHAT!? Warm weather after the cold breaks is always like that though. 60 degrees at the end of summer and I’m trying to wear hoodies, and my fuzzy socks. At the end of cold weather (or some random warm day in middle of winter)? I’m wearing as little clothes as possible. It just felt so good to be outside, not wearing a million layers. The sun was shining down and everything felt so right. Just a little pick me up in the middle of the worst, most depressing seasons like “here’s what you have to look forward to in just a few months!” It was a much needed surprise.

The random super warm weather also made me even more excited to be living in my new neighborhood. I feel so much safer taking Klaus on walks here than where I lived before therefore we’ve obviously been taking a lot more walks. We’ve been living here just under a month and I feel like it’s already made a huge impact on both Klaus and I. Obviously dogs are happier after they’ve been walked and have used up their energy but those walks help me feel a lot less stressed too. I’m so looking forward to exploring the neighborhood with my puppy dog even more once the weather warms up for good.

One last thing related to my neighborhood and the warm weather. Like I had mentioned before, my apartment was completely remodeled right before we moved in so my landlord had been spending a ton of time here over the last few months. He was telling Jeff and I that there is a neighborhood pig that goes on walks with it’s owner. We were both like “NO WAY! How cool!” and figured we probably wouldn’t see it for a while. A few days later my landlord came over to finally hook up our washer and dryer (DUDE. It feels so good to finally do laundry!) Shortly after he left he called and asked if it was still working to which I was like “Uh? Yeah? You just left?” then he revealed the true reason for calling… “The pig. It’s out walking at the corner of Professor and College” Sooo needless to say, I threw a leash on Klaus and we literally ran outside. I found the pig almost immediately – prompting this tweet. It was just happily waddling along behind it’s mom. I watched as three people stopped to talk to her about her unique pet. I’ve got my fingers crossed for lots more pig sightings this summer. I will most definitely be updating you, hopefully with photos and a name, next time I see the piggy!

what I wore : owl get the hang of it

My blogging schedule since moving has been… erratic, to say the least. December was kind of a mess for me. I was so anxious to move that I had a hard time concentrating on anything. I constantly felt behind in my work, and was so looking forward to getting the move over with. I somehow thought that once I moved things would just fall into place but I’m definitely still struggling to establish routine here. Owl get the hang of it soon though, don’t you worry! I finally got my office mostly in order last night, that should definitely help.

Jeff and I were both nervous about moving in together. I mean, we’ve been dating for nearly three years now but we’re both people who truly treasure our alone time. As much as I felt like it was a little lonely living by myself at times, I was worried about having to share my space again. Our new apartment is honestly the perfect space for us though. It’s not huge but the way it’s laid out makes it perfect for just squirreling yourself away and chilling. The fact that we each get our own office is a godsend! It’s also ridiculously soundproof too. His office isn’t that far away from mine, and I know he listens to his music really loud but I can’t hear a thing! Anyway the point of that was that even though I had planned to squirrel away in my office and work my tail off, I’ve been having a hard time pulling myself away from settling in, and making this place ours. Also, cuddling! Cuddling takes up a lot of my time now that the four creatures I like to cuddle live in the same house.

I am really happy these days. I couldn’t have even dreamed of it being this much fun to finally share a space with Jeff.  I’m trying really hard to get back into a routine where I spent a good chunk of my day typing out words for you to read but sometimes it’s just more fun to sit on the couch, watch American Pickers, and try not to happy cry about the fact my pets are finally becoming real friends. I sure hope your 2017 is off to as equally wonderful start.

Sooo many thing I want to talk about in this post! For starters, these glasses! If you recall I actually posted about them in my Friday Favorites a few weeks ago. At the time I had just ordered them in my home try-on kit (which is free + you should totally do it!) but the second I tried them on I knew they had to be mine. I had purchased two other pairs from another company the week previous but these are like the pair to rule them all. I feel like they just suit my face perfectly. I was kind of waiting on Warby Parker to have some sort of holiday sale but when Cyber Monday came and went without a sale I decided they were worth it no matter what. I’m still really pumped on that decision. I haven’t touched another pair since. Now I just need to get a pair of prescription sunglasses (…or ten) and I’ll be all set!

And this coat!!! Last month I posted about Octer (see here!) Well, they recently emailed me again to introduce me to their new company, Woznow, which is essentially the same thing except with sales! You can search across a whole bunch of different sites and only see items on sale. I knew immediately that I wanted to find a jacket that was warm, but still nice enough to wear with dresses. I have two winter coats but neither are very fancy looking. Luckily Woznow has everything broken down into neat little sections so I just chose the category “coats” and got to browsing! I ended up finding this one, which was marked down 40%! It’s kind of perfect! It’s exactly what I was looking for plus it’s black and white. Even more than that it has SO much room for lapel pins. Hah! Seriously though, it took a lot of self control for me to stop at four. I basically wanted to put all my b+w ones on.

Well, I’m off. I’ve been fighting a cold for nearly a week now. For a few days it was basically just me without a voice but it finally succeed in making my whole body feel icky. This is the first time in at least four years I’ve gotten sick so it’s not all bad. Just need to relax so I’m all better to finish packing and move! Hope you’re having a lovely week!

Last Sunday we threw a surprise party for grandpa’s 85th birthday.  I drove out early in the morning (after speed cleaning my apartment because my landlord texted me to say she’d be coming by), made a few pit stops to shoot foggy photos, helped my parents set up, partied, ate too much, helped them tear down, blah blah blah. It was a super busy day. I really really wanted to squeeze in outfit photos though.

Five years ago we actually threw my grandpa surprise party for this 80th. Before going I took outfit photos that I considered some of my favorites for a long time. See them here! I liked the outfit, the photos were pretty and I felt like I looked really good. I even thought this the other day while glancing back at the post. Even though I don’t own those clothes anymore, I like any excuse to draw parallels between different times, events, blog posts, etc. The thing that would connect these two would be that they were both taken on the day we threw a surprise party for my grandpa. So I was really excited when the sun stayed in the sky long enough for me to grab a few quick shots.

It wasn’t until I got through editing these photos that I realized how sad I looked in that last post. I’m not saying that not smiling in photos makes you look sad. I actually really hate that notion. I just feel like in the photos from last weekend my happiness is contagious. I found myself grinning while editing them. Even if there was a huge stain on my dress that I didn’t notice until now. I have nothing more to elaborate on, just wanted to say life is good. (Oh, and holy cow, I LOVE MY LONG HAIR like a lot a lot a lot!)

what I wore: overalls, again!

by Kaylah Stroup November 1, 2016

top – striped turtleneck via Macy’s
sweater – cardigan via JcPenney
pins – ghoul by Two Ghouls Press, black cat by Valley Cruise Press
overalls – Blue Spice overalls via JcPenney
boots – Palladium Boots

Recently I was contacted by Octer, a website that makes it super easy to find whatever you’re looking for while shopping online. They instantly compare thousands of items from a bunch of different websites so you don’t have to do a ton of legwork when it comes to finding say… the perfect overalls? Yep, when they reached out to ask if I’d like to try them, that’s exactly the direction I went! A Kaylah classic, you know, like I wore when I was the cover of Cleveland Magazine earlier this year. Still can’t believe that was real life!!! Except paired with a cozy oversized cardigan, and striped turtleneck, both found through Octer as well, which is perrrrfect for fall! I’ve actually been wearing this same outfit for most of the week. Don’t you dare judge me, it’s comfy!

On Octer you can browse through categories which they’ve conveniently broken down fairly specifically. For example different styles of dresses like mini, midi, maxi, work, party, beach and so on. I found it easiest just to use the search bar though. If I didn’t, I may have ended up browsing everything for hours and hours! I love window shopping! Its fun because you can compare between different stores of your choice if you already have favorites or just view products from all available stores. I even ended up stumbling upon a few new websites this way! I think my biggest tip is to make sure to utilize the “max price” filter after searching or else you run the risk of falling in love with things way outside your budget. Hello $274 bra.

If we’re being completely real here, I do think that some of the search results aren’t super great. Maybe some of my searches were a little too specific ahem, beetle dress but I’d rather see one result that is exactly what I was looking for than one hundred results with only one of them being relevant. Does that make sense? I guess I did find one whole perfect outfit in no time at all so I’ve got no room to complain!

I’d definitely recommend utilizing Octer next time you feel like treating yo self! You never know what you might find.

my 8 favorite beauty products!

by Kaylah Stroup October 26, 2016

“Beauty blogging” is something I’m always dipping my toes in but can never seem to commit to. I’m a dabbler in make-up. I love to try new things but most doesn’t stick around for too long so I never get around to blogging about it. I’m not incredibly talented and could probably use a few pointers from friends but I do have a short list of beauty products I LOVE and purchase over and over again.

My 8 favorite beauty products!
▴ Hask Placenta. I think in all of my hair related posts I’ve made it abundantly clear how much I love Hask Placenta. It’s hair magic, you guys! That’s all I’ve got to say about that!

▴ Coconut oil. Hi! Welcome to the internet. Have you heard about our lord and savior, coconut oil? Seriously though, coconut oil is a must have and just about everyone ever has written a post about it. I use coconut oil for A LOT of different things. My top three uses – to shave with, make-up remover, and oil pulling. If you search on Google, there are literally lists upon lists of what you can do with it. Once you try shaving with coconut oil though, you’ll never want to use anything else again. Sooo smooooth. It’s also Professor ‘s favorite product. That little cat just hears me pick up the jar and comes running. It’s good for pet’s coats! I usually give him a small amount or else he just licks it off my legs.

▴ Argan oil. I only started using argan oil when I got my curling wand last month but I will never be without it again. It makes my hair so shiny, and so soft without making it greasy. It also makes my hands super soft in the process, and I love the way it smells! I feel like it makes my hair twice as pretty!

▴ St. Ives Timeless Skin Facial Moisturizer. I’m pretty forgetful when it comes to putting lotion on any part of my body other than my face (probably because I’m already so silky from coconut oil! Hah!) but I always use moisturizer after hopping out of the shower. I’ve tried a handful of others but always come back to St. Ives. This stuff leaves my face feeling soft and moisturized but never greasy.

▴ Seche Vite. You NEED this top coat. Seche Vite is the top coat of all top coats. It dries quickly and keeps my nails chip free for days. Since originally discovering it years ago I haven’t painted my nails once without finishing up with this stuff.

▴ Maybelline colorblur lip pencil. Despite having bought and tried LOTS of different lipsticks, I still feel fairly inexperienced in the whole world of lip color. I’ve found a handful things I love, a few that I hated, a couple that I don’t know how I existed without.  My-My Magenta and I Like to Mauve It are two colors I own of this line and gah! they’re so good. They feel really nice on your lips, and the color lasts! I kind of want to buy a lifetime supply just in case they ever get discontinued.

▴ NYX Illuminating Stick. I bought this on a whim and was kind of shocked with how much I came to love this stuff! It comes in a variety of colors. I randomly chose “chardonnay shimmer” which was the perfect choice. One quick swipe in each spot I want to shimmer, a tiny bit of blending, and I have beautiful highlights!

▴ IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundations. I found this stuff through youtube one day. It was more than I ever wanted to spend on a single item of makeup but after watching the infomercial on QVC I couldn’t resist. I LOVE this stuff. Reading over the reviews I see that they’re actually pretty mixed right now but a lot of the complaints sound like what happens when you apply too much. A little bit goes a long way! This stuff is so easy to apply and gives me effortless full coverage in no time at all.

the dainty squid, beauty blogger, list of favorites

Notable mentions!
▴ Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Eyeliner. Probably the best eyeliner out there! Why is it only a notable mention? Because I don’t currently own any. I wanted this post to be things I genuinely always have on hand. Despite loving this eyeliner I often purchase different brands when I run out of it because I like to try new things. I always come back to it though!

▴ Jojoba Oil. Makes an excellent make-up remover (some people even claim it makes your eyelashes grow!) You can put it in your hair to make it smooth and shiny. Rub on your hands for beautiful cuticles. I even use it to shine my plugs! Why is it only a notable mention? Because since finding coconut oil I don’t use it as often. I felt the need to include it though since I know some people aren’t interested in using coconut oil.

▴ Tinted lip balms! Tinted lip balms are my go-to when I don’t want to commit to lipstick for the day. Why are they only a notable mention? I don’t have a favorite brand, and in all honesty, I’ve never tried one I didn’t like. My top three right now are Burt’s Bees in Rose, NYX butter lip balm in panna cotta, and Wet N’ Wild natural blend in spice.

What are some of your all time favorite beauty products?

NuMe curling wand review

by Kaylah Stroup October 10, 2016

A few weeks ago the professional styling product brand NuMe emailed me to ask if I’d like to try out one of their curling wands. I’ve never really used any sort of heat styling on my hair. Its incredibly resistant to style, it just wants to be straight so it kind of seemed like a lost cause. I’d heard lots of good things about curling wands though so I happily accepted the offer figuring worst case scenario would be me having to email them to explain it just wasn’t working for my hair. Spoiler alert: I end up LOVING this curling wand…

NuMe has a variety of different wands available. I was a little confused at first just because they sell two main kinds, magic and classic, and they don’t make it abundantly clear what the differences are. The big thing is that they are made from different materials, one is titanium and the other tourmaline. From my research (a response on their facebook page) I gathered that the classic wand is better for fine hair, and the magic for thick or hard to curl hair. Either way, both types of wands claim to offer damage free styling. I ended up choosing the 25mm classic wand, which for my desired look was the perfect choice.

The curling wand comes with a heat resistant glove, that as you can see from the photo up there, I don’t use. I tried using it the first few times but realized that it made separating my hair into small sections
too hard. The wand is incredibly hot, 400°F, so you have to be careful – even if you do choose to wear the glove. So far the only burn I’ve gotten was on my shoulder …yeah, I wasn’t wearing a shirt so I probably deserved that one.

In my recent how I style my hair post, which I finished writing just as I got this thing in the mail or else it would have been included, I listed my daily hair products. When I’ll be using the curling wand I just use Pantene Pro-V Smooth Heat Protecting Spray and Hask Placenta with the addition of argan oil. The first two products go in my hair while it’s still damp and get combed through the whole length. The argan oil oil gets smoothed only on the ends after it’s dry and right before I begin to curl. The photo above is actually a really good example of what it looks like when you use too much argan oil. It’s not greasy but it is piece-y.  Figures I’d do that on the day I took these photos, right?

Starting with dry hair (the directions on the packaging make it very clear your hair cannot be damp!) I separate my hair off into two main sections, top and bottom, and start curling. I curl the bottom layer of my hair first then the top which I let down in small sections. Despite never having used a curling wand before I found the whole process super simple to pick up on. I’ve been getting quicker and quicker each time I use it so now it takes approximately the same amount of time to use this than it did for me to put my hair up in curlers. You don’t even need to hold the hair on the barrel very long at all, like ten seconds!

After I get my whole head of hair curled and it’s cooled down, I run my fingers through the curls just to separate them a bit and shake my hair out. I spritz a little hairspray on my bangs (which I still curl with this curling iron) and I’m good to go! The curls last all day!! The funny thing is that in the past when I shot outfit photos I had to make sure I had done my hair within a few hours of when I wanted to shoot or else my hair would be too flat. It was one of those things you’re self conscious about despite knowing it’s not a big deal, you know what I’m talking about? Now I don’t even have to think twice about my hair if I’ve used the curling wand. My hair looks voluminous all day. It’s seriously the best feeling!

green hair
Look you can see through my nose! Hah!

So final thoughts? I’M OBSESSED. I try not to use the wand every day simply because heat styling makes me nervous but it’s hard to resist. With this wand, I have my dream hair. For me to be able to have curls that last all day, and are still there when I wake up the next day is really something! I honestly have no complaints at all, I just wish this thing came into my life sooner!!

NuMe’s curling wands are available in a variety of different places including Ulta (online only), Amazon, and their official website. Prices vary greatly, for some strange reason, with their website being the most expensive. As of right now, Amazon is the cheapest if you want to give one of these bad boys a whirl. Don’t forget to grab some argan oil as well!

what I wore : sweater weather

by Kaylah Stroup October 6, 2016

sweater – marbled cardigan c/o Macy’s
necklace – moon necklace by Black Crystals
pins – hand by Titina Store, Life is Rad by Black Springs
top – leaf print top c/o Macy’s
jeans – Style & Co. skinny jeans c/o Macy’s
boots – Palladium Boots

It’s sweater weather and I now own the coziest sweater… EVER. I actually put together this outfit for an instagram collab with Style&Co, a brand exclusively carried at Macys, but wanted to share it here too! The objective was to put together an outfit for under $100 so I picked up the three main pieces for this outfit; sweater, top + jeans. I’m really happy with how it turned out.

And seeeriously, this cardigan! It’s so good! I was actually watching American Horror Story last week and one of the main characters wears a lot of slightly oversized cardigans. I was thinking to myself “you need to get yourself some of those!” because she always just looks so comfortable yet still put together and cute. I already owned a handful of long-ish cardigans but nothing that hung on me the way I liked on her. This one does though! I was wearing it yesterday around the house with some light grey polka dot leggings and a loose fitting tank – nailed that cozy look, y’all! I feel like I always find that perfect seasonal piece right before the weather turns so I’m pumped to actually be able to wear this for a few months before having to put it away.

On a completely unrelated subject, looking at these photos I’m reminded of a comment a troll left a while ago. It was on my 7 tips for maintaining bright hair color (but not on my post hosted here, on a link to it on a magazine’s website) and it basically said “If you’re going to photoshop your hair color, at least make it believable.” It made me laugh really, really hard because one time my best friend and I made a video where we claimed that my hair was actually brown and that I just photoshopped my pictures to be cool. Also because I don’t edit my hair color… at all. I’m just diligent about maintaining it, most of the time. So if it looks super bright in photos, it’s because it’s super bright in real life and probably very freshly dyed. Yeah, white tipped nails + fresh green hair isn’t a good choice! Most of the time I don’t really even pay too much attention to it when I’m sorting through photos, as long as my bangs are all connected – that’s my one “thing”. When I scrolled back up through these photos it definitely caught my eye how fake it looked. Looks like I dragged the saturation waaaay up, especially in the photo above. Hah! Just starting the season of “Is that a wig?” and “Is that for Halloween?” strong, I guess.
