I originally was just going to include this bandana because I thought it was cute. Upon further reading though, I noticed that it actually repels mosquitos, ticks and other bugs ya don’t want on you! How rad is that!?

Because who doesn’t need more cute little storage containers to store tiny treasures in!?

I’m just picturing this gorgeous quilted throw on my blue couch and ugh, soooo good!

This reusable straw that rolls up into a tiny container you can attach to your keychain is the coolest.

This sweater is so cute! I also just really love how happy the model looks.

These earrings!

Creature of the night!

Love these jammies!

I’ve featured this snake lamp time and time again. I want it so badly but I’ve just been waiting for the price to drop. Guess what – it happened! It’s down $20 from the original price.

I wore one of my Sugarhill Boutique sweaters for the first time this season yesterday and I’m hooked all over again. They just fit really nice and who can resist a giant animal on their sweater!? I love this deer one.

This sweatshirt!

Gotta throw in one of my own items since it fits this week’s theme! This constellation boxy bag!

Link love…

  • This isn’t being marketed as pajamas but I could definitely see myself getting all cozy in this jumpsuit.
  • Globe folks – this is easily one of the most affordable moon globes I’ve ever found online! And because once I start looking, I can’t stop I’m gonna share a few other globe finds… I love tin globes and this one is no exception. This one’s stand is just weird and I love it!
  • This calendar!
  • This lounge sweater looks so dang cozy.
  • I just love fun socks. Here are some kitty socks. More kitty socks. Oh, and even more kitty socks. (One last pair, these ones with a swear word.)
  • Love this vanity tray!

Happy Friday! xoxo

perfect display for heirloom rings!

by Kaylah Stroup September 11, 2019

When my mom passed, I inherited her wedding ring. I wore it for a month or so before determining that I felt better keeping it somewhere safe. It’s not really my style and I don’t actually enjoy wearing very much jewelry. I briefly searched for ideas on how to nicely display a special piece of jewelry but came up empty-handed. The ring eventually found a home in my desk drawer.

Fast forward to last month, my dad gave me his wedding band. I put it in the drawer with my mom’s ring and headed back to google to hopefully find a good idea for how to display them. I didn’t want to wear them or repurpose them in another piece of jewelry. It was important to me to keep the pieces as-is. My mom’s ring is missing a couple of stones and my dad’s is comically misshapen. I just needed a good way to display them that fit my style.

Then, as luck would have it, as I was working on a Friday Favorites post I stumbled upon this sweet little glass case. Seemed like exactly what I was looking for and it was under $15! I ordered it immediately, half assuming it was too good to be true.

It is PERFECT. It fits my needs exactly. It’s 100% my style, looks great with my decor and is a beautiful way to display something really precious to me.

I did end up cutting two or three links out of the chain just so the rings hung up a bit higher. I literally just used scissors! It took one minute and was totally not a big deal.

Glass case for heirloom ring

This was a super simple post but one that I think is important. I can’t be the only one out there searching for the perfect way to display an important piece of jewelry. I was honestly surprised to have not found an abundance of options.

You can find the ring display here. It’s affordable, delicate and the absolute perfect way to keep heirloom jewelry safe! It even comes in a couple of different shapes too.

Digging this desk snail, complete with shell that opens up for sneaky storage.

This living room is pretty cute but I am all about that mirror! I don’t know what it is lately but I just keep finding myself looking for cute mirrors. This one even has a shelf at the bottom for all my odds and ends. LOVE IT!

Still loving the short wide leg pants trend, still haven’t tried it for myself for some unknown reason! These ones are super cute, come in a handful of colors and are pretty darn affordable.

This bat print!

UO now carries my favorite planter! These things are so neat. You plant in the top half and the water drains into the bottom half. It’s just super nice that you don’t need any ugly little tray to collect excess water. (You can see mine here!)

Love this jumpsuit. Maroon was not a color I ever wore with my green hair but now I can’t help but be drawn to it. I have lost time to make up for.

Tiny vintage mice to hold your rings!

Loving these sandals! They’re majorly marked down right now too.

I’m still obsessed with rompers! (Here’s another cute one that’s black and white striped!)

You know I love anything with moons on it, this mug is no exception!

Link love…

  • A few neat oddities – this vintage tooth shade guide! tooth display with removable teeth! a lot of old dental stuff! (honestly, the random ear is what caught my attention.) this torso! aaaand a whole bunch of knees!
  • Don’t mind me, just crushing on furniture I definitely don’t have room for.
  • A recent purchase I’m loving – this black midi dress! It fits so nicely and is super easy to just throw on. LOVE an outfit that looks like without trying too hard!
  • I linked to it a few weeks back but Modcloth is having a limited time outlet shop & now there’s nothing over $30!
  • Isn’t this such an interesting globe? I’ve never seen one with a stand like that.
  • Y’all have seen these finger planters, right?! (The seller currently has a couple that are imperfect at a really great price with free shipping!)
  • This mustard bralette!
  • Another bralette that comes in a bunch of colors and is super affordable!

Happy Friday! xoxo

This oven mitt set is right up my alley!

My most favorite boots are back in stock. I’m very tempted to grab a new pair. I had my last pair for over five years before I finally wore them out!

This dress + this jean jacket = I’m ready for summer!

These earrings!

This tank top!

Forever a fan of random household objects that are cuter than they need to be, like this skull brush. (Also available on Amazon.) Its made by the same company that makes this skeleton hand jewelry holder that I’ve been drooling over forever.

I am very into this moth sweatshirt!

Another great summer dress! It’s super affordable too. (Here’s a similar one except it has slightly longer sleeves!)

Yard bouquet season is approaching! These tiny vases would be perfect for all my floral finds. (Love this one too!)

I LOVE Scrinium Daffodil’s insect displays! They’re just so visually appealing.

Obsessed with this pants + sandals combo. I’m still not sure how I feel about this style of pants on myself but I LOVE them on everyone else.

YES! Ya know, because you need something to pair with your favorite leggings.

Link love…

  • Mushroom tank top!
  • Another fun vase! (What can I say, it’s that time of the year and I’ve missed flowers so much!)
  • LOVE this floating night stand but I can’t stop imagining a cat trying to jump on it.
  • This striped jersey dress would make the perfect swimsuit coverup! We’re heading back to the desert in June and I’m already very excited about all the swimming I’ll be doing!
  • Cat enthusiast? Here’s the pin for you!
  • I’m not sure how many times I have to link to this dang velvet bra and booty shorts set before I just suck it up and buy it…
  • Speaking of bras, I just noticed that my all time favorite one is way cheaper than normal right now. I immediately bought two new ones!

Last but not least, Squid turned twelve last week so this weekend we’re celebrating with a huge sale in the shop named after her! Everything is already marked down. It’s a great time to stock up on gifts.

Happy Friday! xoxo

Two of the things I love the most on one tshirt – jackalopes + Arizona!

These earrings! So cute!

Don’t mind me, just being a Palate Polish fan girl. Her newest color Artichoke is dreamy!

The Once Upon A Thyme jacket is marked way way down right now. I own it in gray (See it on here!) and LOVE it. It’s my everyday coat. It also comes in navy!

I am way into this mirror. I’m already scheming how to do something similar with a mirror I already own. I love the idea it as another cozy light source. (Y’all, in case you didn’t know, I LOVE lamps!)

This dress!

Link love…

  • Shark dress!
  • Oddities under $25 – tooth in a bell jar, nose + mouth model, hinged typodont, hip joint model , a hand model & a set of tooth molds.

  • Love this friendly shirt.
  • Get meowta here!
  • I’m obsessed with basically everything from the Auden line right now. I recently bought this chiffon romper. UGH. It’s perfect.
  • I already mentioned Tubi in my things I loved in March post but in case you missed that, I’m bringing it up again. 100% free and legal streaming! I’m kind of embaressed to admit how much I’ve been loving Little Women: Atlanta.

I can’t not mention this week’s shop update! A brand new size + lots of new prints. This jackalope boxy pouch came after the update but I am SO excited about how it turned out! Its just perfect!

Happy Friday! xoxo

The Dainty Squid (shop!) is coming back

by Kaylah Stroup January 10, 2019

Unlike every single year ever previous to this one, for 2019 I didn’t write up a huge list of goals I want to accomplish. I did, however, take on one very big project that I am super excited to share…

The Dainty Squid is coming back!

The Dainty Squid in its original form, that is! I am back to sewing. FULL FORCE! What a way to start the year, right!?! I’m super stoked and basically just putting my all into this. I’m so very excited to share this news, and really get this party started!

A bit of history;
The Dainty Squid started around eleven years ago as an Etsy shop. I sold various handmade goods and eventually found my niche sewing zipper pouches and other small bags. Over the next few years, I sold thousands. Literally. I even sold wholesale to brick and mortars stores across the US. It was my life.

Eventually, I wore myself out. I was right one the brink of a HUGE life change (moving to Cleveland!) and basically wanted to ditch all of my old routines. I needed something new. I had been making pretty consistent money blogging so my sewing machine and I broke up. I sold all my supplies, put the remainder of stock on clearance and said ‘goodbye’ to my little sewing business.

Why am I coming back now?
Shortly before Christmas, I spotted an email in my spam folder from a man whose wife had purchased a pouch from me ten years ago. She’d been using it all this time but it understandably was pretty beat up after so many years. He wanted to know if I could help track down the fabric since it was such a fun pattern. My first reaction was ‘Aw, that’s nice but I am definitely over that chapter.” An hour later, I was still thinking about his email. ‘I guess it wouldn’t hurt to help hunt down the fabric.’ Another hour and I’m emailing the guy telling him to ship the fabric to me and I’ll make her a brand new pouch.

A couple days later, the fabric showed up in my mail box. I immediately got to work and made her five brand new pouches. You know what? It felt GOOD. Like, reeeally really good. Everything from the way my shears felt cutting the fabric to the smell of the iron was just perfect. I felt like me. Suddenly I missed The Dainty Squid. I wanted to be sewing again. I craved the feeling of creating something.

I woke up the next day thinking about starting The Dainty Squid up again. It consumed my mind. The day after that I was ordering fabric and other supplies to get started.

It just feels right. I had no idea how much I missed sewing. So funny how I went all this time never really thinking too much about it. That one little email sparked something though. It reminded me how much I truly loved making things and selling online.

When?! Where?!
I am planning the grand re-opening for Friday, January 18th! Mark your calendars! I would give you a time but my thought as of right now is that I’ll probably be listing things for a good portion of the day. I’ve been so busy building stock, there’s A LOT!

I’ll be opening up on Etsy under the name ‘thedaintysquid‘, of course. Right now, the shop isn’t open yet but you can still hit follow if you’d like to keep an eye on it.

I will absolutely be posting again here on the blog on opening day, and sharing more peeks over on instagram in the meantime.

Two last things…
▴ If you’re still using an old pouch of mine, I’d love to see! Since I started sharing peeks of my sewing projects on instagram I’ve been getting messages with photos of pouches y’all bought 8+ years ago. I can’t even begin to describe how amazing that feels. I’m proud my work has lasted and seriously tickled pink that anyone would hang on it. It’s just been fuel for my fire, inspiring me even further to create! Thank you for supporting me.

▴ I will be taking on wholesale orders!  If you have a brick and mortar store and would like my line sheet, shoot me an email! Be sure to include a link to your site/social media.

8 favorite clothing purchases in 2018

by Kaylah Stroup January 2, 2019

▴ . For the past few years, I’ve been very into oversized cardigans. They’re basically my favorite way to make any outfit cozy. Despite owning many, this mustard colored one quickly moved into my top spot. It’s so incredibly soft! It looks great with dresses, and pairs easily with jeans and a t-shirt as well.

I purchased a medium and it fits comfortably loose. Medium is my normal size for a cardigan but I’d normally expect them to fit a bit more snug so if you’re looking for a tighter fit definitely size down. Cuddly fit? Get your normal size.

▴ Teva flatform sandals. Formerly a member of the cheap sandals club, these were the most expensive ones I had ever bought. I couldn’t understand why sandals should cost so much. I ended up splurging because I really love the style… and holy cow, my mind is 100% changed. These bad boys taught me that paying for a quality sandal is life changing. That sounds so dramatic but y’all, these are like walking on clouds! I can walk and walk and walk all day with zero pain or rubbing.

Can’t forget to mention the fact that they literally match everything. I can wear them with jeans, shorts, and even dresses and somehow they look perfect with every single outfit.

I wore them almost exclusively all summer, walked a ton and took them on lots of adventures. They show no real signs of wear other than the whites of the stripe on the side being a little dingy. I did see tutorials specifically on how to clean Tevas which I’ll have to give a shot! I definitely want to buy another pair this summer. Maybe these since they’re a tad dressier? Either way, I’m hooked. They’re worth the money!

▴ Bali Illusion-neckline underwire bra. I don’t think that I actually discovered this bra in 2018 but it is the year that I almost exclusively switched to it being my only bra. I love this bra so much that I own multiples in three different colors. (Only reason I don’t have more colors is that every time I want to buy a new one the price on the colored ones seems to be super-inflated compared to a black one)

What’s so great about this bra? Honestly, no idea. I can’t really figure out what makes this bra so perfect and comfortable but it’s so nice that I got rid of every other bra I owned aside from a few ‘fancy’ ones. It looks smooth under t-shirts, the straps don’t dig into my shoulders, and my boobs just fit in the cups really nicely. I don’t feel like I’m overflowing. It also doesn’t do that awful thing where it looks like it fits until you sit down and then the cups pop up.

I truly just love this bra!

▴ Double zip half moon purse. Large enough to hold the essentials but small enough I don’t carry unnecessary crap! Plus it’s super cute and affordable. Simple as that.

▴ Wild Meadow bell sleeve dress. I LOVE this dress. I was a bit hesitant to purchase it based on the one other review but I’m certainly glad I went for it (and for under $15 I really had no excuse not to!)

So, my first impression? It’s perfect! The material almost feels like swimsuit fabric except maybe not as heavy. It’s very comfortable. I actually really enjoy the material its made from because it doesn’t wrinkle very easily. Even sitting at my desk all day in it, it stays wrinkle free.

The fit is spot on. I bought a large, which is what I normally wear, and it fits exactly as I’d expect it. The length is great. I’m five foot seven and find that most dresses are a little short but this one is long enough that I feel comfortable wearing it anywhere.

If you’re not a fan of bell sleeves – this dress is basically the same thing but with different sleeves and a different pattern.

▴ Levi’s skinny jeans. Black high waist skinny jeans are kinda my thing. I’m very happy to have found this pair. They fit my body beautifully, don’t get baggy after wearing them all day, and don’t actually feel like wearing jeans. Don’t get me wrong they aren’t as comfy as leggings but they’re certainly the most comfortable pants I own!

▴ GOgroove camera bag. I love this camera bag so much I wrote a whole post dedicated to it. Read that here. A quick recap though – my all time favorite camera bag and trust me, I’ve owned a lot of them. It holds a ton yet remains comfortable to wear all day. Through my many adventures and the couple road trips its been on, it’s still clean and looking fresh.

One of the most important features it has is side camera access. Being able to grab my camera from the bag without taking the bag off is something I will never compromise on again. It’s just so convenient!

This bag is basically a steal! I highly highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a new camera bag. Be sure to check out my full review for more photos and details.

▴ Black overalls. The sizing options on these overalls nearly scared me away since they come in small, medium, large or extra large and for a pair of pants, I feel like that’s super vague. I suppose I buy pjs in sizes like that but I’m a heck of a lot more picky about how jeans fit than jammies. Since Amazon has super easy & free returns I just went for it. I really wanted a second pair of black overalls, okay? I chose large. I’m very happy with how they fit. If I were going for a tighter fit, I definitely could have pulled off a medium but I actually was looking for a pair with a more relaxed fit.

They’re roomy throughout the legs without looking oversized. The waist even has enough room to fit a bulky sweater without looking stuffed. I’m around five foot seven inches with a long torso and these fit perfectly lengthwise in my torso. Always an issue with overalls!!! The only real questionable thing is the length, which I already mentioned makes them a bit more suited for warm weather. Based on review photos though, if you’re shorter they’ll most likely be perfect on ya!

I am super excited to pair these with my Tevas when the weather warms up!

How about you? What were some of your favorite 2018 clothing purchases?

Loving this dress! Such a perfect piece for transitioning from summer to fall. I’m picturing it paired with pink booties and maybe a pink faux leather jacket.

(Yeah, I actually went ahead and just ordered that dress because I got myself so pumped on it!)

Every single year I obsess over these velvet pumpkins but I have yet to buy any because they’re also so darn expensive. I found a tutorial though! I’m kind of amazed how easy they are to make. Can’t wait to pick up the supplies!

(via The Little Umbrella)

This purse! So fun! It kind of reminds me of something a fancy robot lady would use. (Truly a strange thought, I know, but you totally get what I’m saying, right!?)

(via Joules)

Look at this candle holder! So, I actually went searching for these online because I saw some like them at an estate sale. They were way out of my candlestick holder price range but somehow I still felt bad leaving them behind. So happy to see I can buy something super similar for a fraction of the price. (Similarly cool – this snake incense holder!)

  • Pumpkin spice sugar stick? Yeah, this sounds tasty!
  • These overalls!!!
  • Loving this set of antique medical illustration prints. Obviously I like it just because of what it is but I also appreciate the fact that each one is in a kind of sassy position.
  • Cute little camera printed pouch.
  • Just three pairs of alien themed socks – a pink pair, a UFO stealing cows & alien heads!

PS. I have a ton more rad finds here! I made a Halloween themed list this week!
