St. Louis Cemetery No. 2

by Kaylah Stroup March 7, 2017
cemetery, new orleans

Lots of people have a list of places they’d like to visit, and some people (me) even have a list of cemeteries they’d like to visit in those cities. New Orleans ranked pretty high on my ‘need to visit’ list just because of their cemeteries. There wasn’t one in particular that drew me there, I just knew they had a bunch that were like none other I had been to before. Without ever having visited one in person I still ranked them high on the list of most beautiful US cemeteries.

On our first full day in the city Jeff and I walked to St. Louis Cemetery No. 2. This cemetery is located just a few blocks away from St. Louis No. 1 which is the oldest cemetery in the city (and the most famous!) As of March 2015, No. 1 is closed to the public without a tour guide due to vandalism. While a cemetery tour is right up my alley, and we ended up taking one later in the day, I really wanted to explore at least one of New Orlean’s cemeteries at my own pace.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 is broken up into three square blocks. Each is similar in the sense that it is laid out with a main center aisle to walk and two smaller parallel aisles. This makes it super easy to see everything and know you’re not accidentally missing a chunk of the cemetery. We started off in square 1 (here’s a map of it, look how organized it is!) and had the whole place to ourselves.

From the second I stepped inside I was in LOVE. I didn’t know where to look or what to shoot first. I found the whole experience very overwhelming, in a good way. I honestly don’t even know what else to say about it so let’s get on with the photos! Photos I’ve been dreaming about taking for yeeeears!

St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 was everything I had hoped and dreamed NOLA cemeteries would be! Usually when you’ve dreamed of something for so long it can never meet up to your expectations but on this rare occasion, it actually did. I cannot wait to go back.

Project 365 : days 58 – 64

by Kaylah Stroup March 6, 2017
58 : 365 I picked up some new baskets for my kitchen, and holy smokes, what a difference! The ones I was using before didn’t match. I can’t believe how much nicer the room looks now. It’s the little things, y’all!

59 : 365 One of my favorite simple pleasures in life is buying multiple bouquets of flowers and plopping down on the kitchen floor to make up my own arrangements. Also, I can’t believe what what perfect vases these glasses make!

60 : 365 Things on my desk.

61 : 365 I finally bit the bullet and bought a bath tray. SOLID DECISION! I love it so so so much.

62 : 365 Just a gross little litter nose kitten – who has his own instagram account in case you missed that announcement yesterday.

63 : 365 Despite a very chilly start, Jeff, Jake, and I spent the first half of the day exploring. We’ve been making an effort to get out more and it feels really good. The two photos below are from spots that didn’t necessarily yield the most exciting photos but let me tell you, we explored a most excellent building. I have so many photos to share soon. Here’s a peek!

64 : 365 My newest sun catcher came with a “rainbow on board” sun catcher as a bonus. It’s basically the same thing, except its on cardboard so it’s super light. I thought it might be cool to shoot through it and I was definitely right. I’m really really excited to play around with this more. I love the look it produced.

Hope your week is off to a great start! I’ve got lots of work to do before I run to the post office to pick up The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild because I know once I get started playing I’m going to be hooked! Anyone else pick it up over the weekend? Are you LOVING IT?!
xoxo

You can keep up with my Project 365 photos under the hashtag “project 365“, of course!

Professor has an instagram!

by Kaylah Stroup March 5, 2017
professor stingray, siamese cat,

Earlier this week my little toasted marshmallow got his own instagram account, aptly called fessermakesfaces. Yep, I am that lady. Back in March of last year I made him his own hashtag but recently I’ve been fighting the urge to just post non-stop pictures of him on my regular account. After a tiny bit of contemplation and the response of “I’m surprised you haven’t made him one already!” from Jeff, I decided to not fight the urge any longer and create a place where it’s all Professor all the time!

You can find him here, @fessermakesfaces. Hope you’ll follow along! 😉
xoxo

PS. Who are some of your favorite pets to follow on instagram? I LOVE Darren & Phillip aka The Blue Boys.

â–´ Love love love the idea of these bathtub flowers. They’re so pretty, and anything that makes baths smell good is cool in my book.
â–´ Donut earrings!
â–´ These cactus sticky notes are so cute!!
â–´ Marina makes the cutest needle felted creatures.
â–´ Do you know what today is? The newest Legend of Zelda game‘s release date! SO PUMPED. Can I tell you something really dumb though? I pre-ordered a while ago, thought the money was already taken from my account so yesterday when a new charge showed up I was like “Oh no! Someone stole my card!” So….I called to dispute the charge. It took until like 10pm last night for me to realize “Crap! It was Zelda!” I feel really dumb, and now I have to fix this situation. Either way, I’ll be playing some day soon!
â–´ This jumanji board game is kind of amazing, and so so so much cooler than that one they released after the movie.

Happy Friday!

New Orleans for a week!

by Kaylah Stroup March 2, 2017

If I’m awake, I’m probably daydreaming about taking a vacation. Luckily I fell in love with someone who has the same priorities in life, and wants to see as much of the world as possible just like I do. These past three years we’ve been a good number of places. I’ve been able to cross lots of places off my bucket list, and subsequently added a bunch more. The one place I had been wanting to go for a while but for some reason just hadn’t was New Orleans.

Jeff and I were browsing flights last month with no particular plan. That’s a pretty normal activity around these parts but on this instance we found flights to NOLA for under one hundred dollars round trip. I was sold instantly! The one issue we came across while planning the trip was that rental cars seemed kind of expensive compared to what we’d paid in the past. I did a bit of research and came to the conclusion that getting a rental car would actually probably hinder us anyway. So, we booked the flight! Unlike our other trips, Jeff and I would be spending the entire week in one place.

It. was. a. blast. I enjoyed being able to get a real feel for a city instead of just seeing something and hopping to the next town like we tend to do. I have so many positive things to say about this trip I’m sure I’m going to think of something I meant to add as soon as I hit publish but here’s a taste of my trip…

the dainty squid, cemetery, New Orleans

Where we stayed – We got a room at The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery and it was… THE COOLEST. The decor is super hip. Seriously, go look at the photos! And the bed? Coziest bed ever! It was a most excellent place to call home for a week. I would absolutely recommend staying there. I didn’t love the fact that our room didn’t have an exterior window but I was so charmed by everything else that it wasn’t a huge deal.

The photo below is in the hotel’s restaurant, Compere Lapin, which was divine. Their avocado toast stupid delicious. Easily the best I’ve ever had. The restaurant was so busy in the evenings that much to our dismay we never got the opportunity to try their dinner.

But seriously, the hotel was incredible. I feel like people have come to see words like “hip” and “trendy” as bad but when I use them to describe this place I mean nothing but positive things. I could have easily written a whole post filled with cool photos of The Old No. 77! Also, I’m giving this place even more bonus points because on the day we arrived there was a lady with a cat on a leash in the lobby which made me smile from ear to ear.

What we ate – We ate a lot in New Orleans! Some highlights included St. Lawrence where we actually ate twice during the week since we liked it so much (their wings are amaaazing), Croissant D’Or Patisserie (best breakfast!), Sucre for dessert (we had some sort of key lime deliciousness and it was heavenly!), and Drip Affogato Bar (best affogato I’ve ever had!) Of course we also ate at Cafe Du Monde because it seemed like something you have to do if you’re in town. Honestly, it was a little crowded for my tastes. I got my beignet on at Cafe Beignet later in the week though! We also got sushi at Geisha which I basically inhaled.

Food was definitely a big part of the trip for me. I know that the list above doesn’t sound too crazy or anything but they were very memorable experiences. New Orleans seems to be a place where good food is basically everywhere you look. There were so many places we wanted to eat and just didn’t get the chance.

What we did – We walked… and walked… and walked some more. In the four days that were in the city we walked a total of fifty miles. My feet hurt at the end of each day but I am SO glad we didn’t end up renting a car. Walking is the best way to get to know a new city. We saw so much, and accidentally stumbled upon so many great things we may not have seen otherwise.

Some highlights for me included;
â–´ Glitter Box N.O. – A shop run for and by women in the French Quarter! What actually caught my eye as we walked by was that they had a print by my favorite graffiti artist hanging on the wall. We went back as soon as they opened so I could buy it! The woman working was so nice and helpful, and it’s just a really rad store.
â–´ Louisiana Loom Works – Gonna be honest here, the reason I’m mentioning it is because of the cats. If you look at the store front on street view you can even see a kitty in the window! The woman inside told us a little bit about the rescue cats she had all while working the loom. I was in heaven since there was a tiny siamese kitty who reminded me of Professor. It was a really nice experience. I might have even cried a little.
â–´ The cemeteries, duh! They were everything I thought they’d be and more!! St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 is a dream.
â–´ The Insectarium!
â–´ New Orleans Pharmacy Museum!
â–´ Bourbon Street. Wait, what? Yeah! So let’s get a few things out of the way here, I don’t drink, and I don’t like being around drunk people. Drunk people to me equal barfing and I have a major phobia so needless to say I avoid situations like that. I had read a lot about how Bourbon Street wasn’t all that great, and dude, I’ve seen the show Cops. Real life Bourbon Street though? I LOVED IT. Well, not the first day we were there. On that occasion it smelled like straight up human waste but we went back the next night and it was kind of amazing. That atmosphere was so wonderful. Everyone was smiling, happy, and just celebrating. There was so much live music happening, there were street performers everywhere, and I even got to pet a tiny pig! While I wouldn’t want to spend the night hanging out on Bourbon Street, it was absolutely a fun experience!

hugo girl, New Orleans, graffiticolorful house, yellow, mardi gras

Reading back over this post, I clearly I enjoyed myself in New Orleans. I labeled so many things “best” or “favorite” and they honestly were. I ate the best wings of my life, and slept in the coziest bed ever! New Orleans is super awesome. I’m very very excited to go back again. There is still so much I want to see, do, and eat there. Emphasis on eat. Y’all know some good food down there!

I feel like we picked the best possible time to visit too. Since I’m not huge on partying, or crowds Mardi Gras always seemed like it might be my worst nightmare. I’m glad we weren’t there in the absolute thick of it but it was amazing to experience a little bit of it the week before the big celebration began.

Until next time, New Orleans!

rainbows in my home

by Kaylah Stroup March 1, 2017

I’ve been thinking about getting a rainbow maker for a while now. Both my last apartment, and my current one get lots of direct sunlight. Watching that light move across the wall throughout the day is one of the most relaxing things ever. The only thing I could think of that could possibly make it better was a rainbow! I had seen a solar powered rainbow maker by Kikkerland that I was interested in getting but it had such mixed reviews that I held off. Looking back at it now, it has four stars out of five but for the price too many people were mentioning it died within a month. I wasn’t really sure what options I had, everything seemed too expensive or was too hokey looking.

Fast forward until a few weeks ago when Jeff and I were at a local toy store when he spotted a prism and mentioned how he’d like to get it for photography. I told him to hold off, Valentine’s Day was approaching and I figured I’d be able to get a much better one online. I ended up deciding on this one since it had such awesome reviews and claimed to be made specifically with photography in mind. As soon as it came, and before I wrapped it up for him, I gave it a little test run.

I held the prism up to my living room window, which is where we get the most direct sunlight, and BAM instant rainbow! I ended up falling back in love with the idea of having rainbows in my apartment so much I decided to try another product. My second purchase was a sun catcher. Instead of just sitting in the window like I had the prism, it hangs on the window from a little suction cup. It’s not exactly my decor style but the rainbows it produces are AMAZING!

the rainbow sun catcher in my window

I decided to write this post for two reasons. One being I really love the photos I’ve gotten so far, and wanted an excuse to share them. Ahem. And two, when I was looking into how to have rainbows in my home I couldn’t find very much information. There didn’t seem to be many solid reviews, and there definitely weren’t any good photos. I wasn’t sure what product would be best for what I wanted so hopefully this post will help someone else who would like a little color in their life!

Prism
â–´ Makes shorter square rainbow, like in the photo below.
â–´ Can either sit in window or be held in your hand.
â–´ Best if used while being held since the rainbow is smaller, and correct angle needs to be hit with light.
â–´ You have more control over the resulting rainbow than with the sun catcher, as in you can move it around the room, and change the shape and size slightly.
â–´ Your cat is probably going to love to chase the light it produces.

Sun catcher
â–´ Makes many long skinny rainbows that fill the room with no effort on your part.
â–´ Attaches to window with suction cup.
â–´ While you can remove it from the window its probably best to just leave it be so you really don’t have any control over where the rainbows go.

For me, the clear winner here is the sun catcher since it produces SO much more color. That’s not to discredit the prism though. It’s definitely a fun little toy to play with, and like I mentioned above, Professor loves it. Either way, both of these items make for fun photos.

Had to post this one because it looks like he’s producing those rainbows and that it takes a lot of effort on his part.

You don’t even have to say it, I agree, it’s a liiittle bit tacky but I can’t help myself. The rainbows make me smile every time I walk into my living room. So much so that I bought a second sun catcher for my kitchen as well.
xoxo

Updated 8/17 – It’s been over a year since I originally wrote this post and in that time I’ve only fallen more in love with rainbows, and purchased even more items to make my home magical. Check out the rainbows these crystals make! Also, I bet you didn’t know your home was missing a disco ball!

Grahamville Cemetery

by Kaylah Stroup February 27, 2017
Grahamville Cemetery, headstone, graveyard

After that incredible abandoned church we found on our Valentine’s Day adventure (check it out here!) I couldn’t imagine our luck getting any better. Shortly after crossing the Pennsylvania border we hit a major wall of fog. Like barely see the car in front of you wall of fog! Jeff said something like “wouldn’t you love to shoot a cemetery in this?” To which my response was “well, I doooo have the find a grave app!” I opened it real quick and found that a little ways off from the next exit was a real gem of a cemetery. The photos showed some old headstones and I was sold!

It was about ten minutes away from the freeway which when you’ve had the worst luck ever photographing fog feels like a lifetime. I’ve told you a million times in the past how every time I go to shoot some beautiful foggy location it all burns off before I arrive. I held my breath the whole way there. We went through patches where the skies were clear, and patches where you couldn’t see a darn thing. By some stroke of luck when we pulled into the driveway it was so white you couldn’t see a single headstone.

I nearly jumped out of the car. Just kidding. I literally jumped out of the car, grabbed my camera from the back and started running around snapping photos. I was so happy to just be shooting anything in the fog but the further I got into the cemetery the older the headstones were until I found that sweet spot I’d seen on the app. It was SO EXCITING. I honestly could ramble forever about how much I love fog and cemeteries, and how the two combined is like the ultimate photographic subject for me so, here, just look at my photos from the day…

living room sneak peek

by Kaylah Stroup February 23, 2017

Decorating the new apartment started with a bang. We got so much done in that first week and a half. I felt like we were way ahead of schedule. Friends and family commented on how quickly it came together. Elycia even said “It’s like you’ve been here forever.” which I took as it’s dirty and outdated. Haha! All the furniture was where I wanted it, and knick knacks were out. Then things slowed to a halt. For the past month we haven’t done much in terms of decorating, and it’s kinda sorta driving me nuts. I’m ready to be settled.

Really, all that is left to do is to hang things on the wall but it’s not a task I take lightly. Hanging things is always super intimidating. I’m not one to overly plan the whole process out so its basically just me crossing my fingers and hoping it turns out okay. It makes no sense, I essentially care about it too much and not enough at the same time. I was really really happy with how my last living room looked so needless to say I had high expectations for this one. The original plan was to keep the theme of black and white but I quickly realized I didn’t have enough stuff to fill the walls. If I were living alone I’d probably have just purchased more things that fit the theme but since Jeff had an abundance of wall hangings that needed to go up we tweaked the plan a bit.

I still wanted to do a “gallery” wall since I like that look. I think the key to a successful one is keeping a color theme so we ended up with black, white, and yellowy brown. Yellowy brown is never ever everrrr a first choice to me but I realized that Jeff and I actually own a lot of it. It shows up in my taxidermy, in my insect collection, Jeff’s arrowheads, our vintage photos, and our star piece, The Doctor*. Like I said, wasn’t totally sold on that color at first but I ended up really digging it. Our main wall, the one behind the couch, is kind of the coolest. The colors look really nice together, and I like how they look with all the plants in the room. Basically, once again, I kind of just threw things together and magically they turned out okay. Thank goodness.

I started taking the photos for this post intending for it to be the official full living room tour but with one wall not completed (the one behind the tv doesn’t have anything hung on it yet) and a few other tasks on my to-do list I’m opting to just call this a peek. I also just feel like it’s missing something. Maybe it’ll feel complete after painting our tv stand. I don’t know, I can’t seem to put my finger on it yet. I just know that when I finally bought the black and white Ikea rug for my last apartment the room suddenly felt complete. The rug really tied the room together. I’m looking for the one thing for this room that just seals the deal, that makes it complete. We’ll see if I ever find it. Either way, you can definitely expect more photos of this room in the next few months. I promise to share photos that show off the whole room, and give you a better idea of the layout, eventually.

xoxo

*The Doctor is not only a really rad piece but one with a bit of sentimental value. Jeff and I originally spotted it at an estate sale – actually THE best estate sale. He really liked it but couldn’t justify buying it since he’d already gotten so many other awesome things there that day. I went back the next day mostly for myself because I figured there would be more goodies for me but also half hoping The Doctor hadn’t sold yet. As luck would have it, it was still sitting there. I made an offer, they accepted, and while Jeff was at work I went over to his apartment and hung it on his living room wall.

abandoned in New York

by Kaylah Stroup February 22, 2017

For Valentine’s Day Jeff and I took a spur of the moment trip to Rochester, New York. On Friday morning he sent me a text asking me to ask my mom, who was at our apartment, if she’d be willing to take Klaus home with her when she left. I knew that meant we were taking a weekend trip so I asked “Where are we running away to?” He responded with a screenshot of a hotel reservation in Rochester. That’s my kind of Valentine’s Day present!

Since we met we’ve been taking annual trips up to Rochester. Each time previous had been with friends, and only for the day. Last year we weren’t able to find a time when everyone was able to go and subsequently missed the opportunity. We’re both fairly smitten with Rochester. Jeff, especially, had been itching to get back as soon as possible. It’s very reminiscent of Cleveland so it’s kind of like being at home but with lots of new things to explore. We left without a plan but armed with cameras – the way any good trip starts.

Saturday was spent aimlessly wandering around the city on foot. We woke up fairly early Sunday with hopes of getting the abandoned subway again, and finding some abandoned buildings to shoot. I felt a little uncomfortable with the subway since for the first time it was actually fenced off, and seemed to be under construction. We opted to hit one building we had found during our last visit and then hit the road since the weather was icky. On our way home we stopped in Buffalo, a city filled with abandoned buildings that for some reason we never have any luck getting into. Well, the Buffalo curse was finally broken.

Despite getting two spots that weekend, one of which was a maaajor highlight for both of us, I didn’t end up with very many photos that I absolutely loved. The ones I am happy with I couldn’t bare to just tuck away in a folder so what you get is a mix of photos from the two buildings.
