Lomo’Instant review

by Kaylah Stroup June 9, 2016
lomography, instant photo, instant photography

My passion for instant photography runs deeeeep. I can’t emphasize enough how much I love it! There really is nothing that beats the thrill of an immediate physical photo you can pass around to all your friends. So when Lomography reached out to ask if I’d like to review their Lomo’Instant Honolulu Edition, a camera I had been admiring for a while, I was more than excited. On top of that, they offered to host a giveaway for y’all but more on that in a bit. First, lets talk about this nifty camera!

What is it? The Lomo’Instant was designed by the fine folks over at Lomography and brought to life by kickstarter backers in 2014. They wanted to build the ultimate instant camera! The Lomo’Instant uses Fujifilm Instax Mini film, which is readily available not only online but in lots of stores, including Target! With this camera you can shoot long exposures, unlimited multiple exposures, or add color gels to the flash. There is even a front mirror for selfies! Basically, the possibilities for what you can do with the Lomo’Instant are endless!

There are three extra lenses available for this beauty including fisheye, portrait, and close-up. The kit includes directions for not only the camera but each of the three lens, as well as sample photos. The sample photos are true to the size your actual photos will be. On the back of each photo there are some tips on how to replicate a similar shot as well as the settings used. I found this to be super handy, especially considering the fact this camera has a bit of a learning curve.

The bottom of the camera even has what each symbol on the camera means and when you should use that setting! It’s incredibly useful when you’re on the go and seem to have forgotten everything you just read up on in the instruction booklet. *Ahem*

So far I’ve shot through two packs of film with my Lomo’Instant. I’ve found the camera to be a bit of a challenge – a fun challenge though! You definitely have to plan your shot (against the rules of Lomography!) Even then, despite all the different controls, the photos do remain fairly unpredictable. I don’t think I would recommend this camera for people who are impatient, who aren’t interested in experimenting or who expect to get the perfect shot every single time. You definitely need a bit of patience here.

If you’re open to playing around, and possibly shooting some things that aren’t exactly what you imagined when you composed the shot then by all means, get yourself a Lomo’Instant! While not everything that I shot turned out very nicely, the ones that did came out even better than expected. You can’t use this camera expecting to take photos that will rival your DSLR, or even your iPhone for that matter. What you can expect are lots of happy accidents! The bottom line is that it’s a super cute camera that is a blast to experiment with.

Below are some examples of what I shot. The one of Klaus (my puppy dog, if you’re new here) and the abandoned building ended up being my absolute favorite despite the fact I did not even plan that shot. Just turned the camera on and released the shutter without looking through the viewfinder.

what I wore : polka dots, stripes + a snail

sunglasses – Mariela c/o Moorea Seal
lapel pins – cactus by Finest Imaginary, fly by Shlomit Ofir, beachcombers society by gloomology
skirt – Bugle Boogie Skirt c/o Modcloth
camera bag – Jo Totes
shoes – Blowfish Shoes

This started as an outfit post but clearly turned into a snail photoshoot. I spotted the little dude after I tripped over the brick he was hanging out under. I picked up the shell, assuming no one was home, and thought “Oh, this will be cute in photos!” I only got a few shots in before he came out of his shell. I was SO stoked. Snails are usually so shy. I’ve actually never even held one. I placed him on my hand, then quickly and haphazardly snapped some shots figuring he wouldn’t stay out for long. …Then he started crawling up my arm. I was basically the happiest gal ever! He crawled around on me for a while, even letting me switch which arm he was on (had to shoot him on my mushroom tattoo, duh!), until I finally put him back where I found him.
When I moved to Cleveland and started hanging around Jeff, and Jason it was the first time I had spent anytime around train tracks. There just weren’t any close to the house I grew up in. Something I noticed fairly quickly was all the snail shells near the tracks. I hadn’t seen any anywhere else around Cleveland, they only seemed to be near the tracks. I asked the boys if they knew why and their response was basically “because there just is.” Very helpful.
Two years later, I’m still amused finding snail shells by the tracks. Google wasn’t very helpful in my search to find out why but one would assume they crawl up while trains are stopped and end up taking a little trip. Normally there isn’t anyone living inside so I guess the day I took these photos was just my lucky day. I feel inspired to head back out with my macro lens and get more shots. Don’t be surprised if a snail filled post shows up this summer! You have to admit they’re at least a little bit cute, right!?

on my deck – summer 2016

by Kaylah Stroup June 6, 2016
colorful succulents, propagation

Last year was my first year in this apartment with it’s cozy little second floor porch. When the weather warmed up, I moved my plants that weren’t looking so hot outside since my office was getting crowded. Much to my surprise, they thrived. After that I ended up moving the rest of my plants outside as well. Everything flourished! On top of that I learned to propagate. It’s safe to say, last year was a good year for me as a gardener. I grew a lot of plants, and I learned a lot about those plants.

Ohio winters are cold, duh!, so all my plants had to come in for the year when the temperatures started to drop again. Almost everything survived the season but they were definitely suffering the consequences of less light. A lot of them had grown dull and leggy. I was anxiously awaiting the day I could trim everything back, pluck off leaves for propagation, and get my plants their color back.

Well, summer weather has officially hit here in Cleveland. With temperatures in the 80’s, this is the perfect weather for my plants. I finally kinda sorta organized my little collection and thought it’d be fun to share some photos of them at the beginning of the season. Plants change so drastically over a season but it happens so slowly that if you’re checking them every single day you might not notice. That’s the number one reason I take so many photos of my plants. I mean, other than the fact that they’re gorgeous. It’s encouraging to be able to compare two photos and see how big they’re getting. So here’s what they’re starting off June looking like…

leaves, succulents

Right after I took everything outside we got a few big rains which I’m pretty sure killed a handful of the leaves I had laid out to propagate. It’s a bummer but not all that big of a deal considering how many others I have growing. I seriously have more leaves than I can shake a stick at. If you’re in the CLE area and would like to trade some babies, by all means holler! We can get coffee and swap succulents!

Other than that, in the short amount of time they’ve been outside everything seems to be really perking up. They LOVE the sunshine and I sure love the variety of colors I’ve got going on out there. I kind of wish I had a better way to display everything other than on my only table and a side table but since I’m hoping *fingers crossed so hard* to move before summer’s end I don’t really want to invest in anything I might not be able to use in another apartment. Things will get even more out of hand once some of my babies get a little larger too. Oh well, it’s not going to stop me from growing even more plants, and purchasing interesting ones I stumble upon.

Last year I shared a similarly title post, on the deck, with photos of what I had growing at the time. You can spot a lot of the same plants from that post in this one, although many of the succulents are unrecognizable due to me stealing their leaves to grow more plants. One in particular I find interesting is the big cactus. I didn’t realize just how much that thing had grown! I’m considering transplanting it to it’s own pot since it’s doing SO well.

Other than all these crazy plants, I’m also growing some herbs which are gosh darn life changing. Fresh basil is the bomb dot com. I’m basically putting it on everything I cook. It’s so delicious and I swear food tastes twice as good when you know that something you grew yourself is in it. What are you guys growing this year?

I’m sure I’ll be back next month, or sooner, with an update on these guys. Hope you’re prepared for a summer of succulent photos!

17-year cicadas – Brood V

by Kaylah Stroup May 31, 2016
Pssst. If you’re not a fan of bugs, you might want to skip this one. I’d rather you scrolled on by than left a comment saying how “gross” this is! 😉

cicada, ohio, brood v, 2016, 17 year

You guys know I like cicadas, right? I have a giant one tattooed on my leg! This obsession started a few years ago when I found a bunch of them in the quiet little cemetery where I often took outfit photos. Look at this lil baby Kaylah! I was / am just enthralled by what neat critters they are.

It’s actually been a few years since I spotted any despite always keeping my eyes peeled. So when the news that the 17-year cicadas would be emerging this year I was stoked! All the news stations around here are covering it, which piqued my interest even more. Of course, there was the chance that the new stations were doing what they do best, exaggerating stories to make them more appealing, but after a little bit of research I figured I better get my butt out there to look or else I’d have to wait another seventeen years for this grand event to happen again!

I wasn’t quite sure where to look but randomly happened to check the Cleveland Metroparks website. They had a whole page on cicadas and just my luck, they were hosting a few cicada walks where you could go, meet up with a group, and look for them together. That’s not really my style but they did list the locations of where they’d be meeting so I figured that was probably the best place to start looking, right?

I drove to a park a half hour away, and huffed and puffed my way around the trail. I found nothing. Hot, sweaty, and annoyed, I called my mom – “Have you seen any cicadas yet?!” I figured since they live in a heavily wooded area my parents would have spotted some if they were out but there were none there yet either.

I hopped back in my car and decided since I was already out and about I’d see if there were any garden centers near by. Google told me my local favorite garden center chain had a location about ten minutes away so I started to head that direction. On my way there I happened upon a cemetery. It looked sufficiently old and I thought if I couldn’t shoot what I came out to shoot I could at least take some photos of a new cemetery. I pulled in and immediately noticed something on the tree. I let out a victorious “hell yeah!”, threw my car in park, grabbed my camera bag, and darted over to the tree. Cicadas everywhere. The tree was covered. They were on headstones. You could barely walk without stepping on them.

white cicada, cicada, ohio, brood v, 2016, 17 year

It’s so incredible to me that these little guys hang out underground for 17 years then when the conditions are right (ground temperatures have reached 64 degrees Fahrenheit) they emerge to molt. Nature is too cool!

Something you may notice from these photos is that a lot of the cicadas had shriveled up wings. If they aren’t able hang downward after emerging they won’t form properly. There are a couple photos in this post, third from top, and second from bottom, that show how the wings are crinkled when they first emerge. This can also be caused by cicadas trampling each other. You can see in the photo above there one decided that directly on top of another was a good place to molt. It seemed like the majority of the adults who had finished drying after molting and stuck around had damaged wings. Judging by the number of abandoned exoskeletons laying around quite a few had already left the immediate area and presumably had fully formed wings.

Super awesome, right?! I’m really stoked about my photos but a little disappointed I didn’t think to take a couple shots that show the just how many there were. I mainly shot individuals as opposed to the whole scene. Hopefully this won’t be the last big group of them I see this year though. I’m planning out going out to look for them in a few other areas where and I’ve got my fingers crossed!

If you’re interested in reading more about these guys, Cicada Mania is a great resource! There is a ton of information. If you’re curious when the periodical cicadas will be emerging in your area, this site has an easy to read chart.
 xoxo

Weird fact : I’ve only found cicadas in cemeteries. I’ve literally never seen a single outside of a cemetery. I tried to research this and see if I could find any information on why this might be but I came up empty handed. Is it the kind of tree which happens to be popular in cemeteries? Softer ground? They’re actually performing witchcraft underground for seventeen years?! I have no idea but it’s pretty interesting.

read more books

by Kaylah Stroup May 30, 2016

I love the city I live in. I’m pretty sure I’ve made that abundantly clear by now. Sometimes I just want to shout it from the rooftops though. Maybe it’s not so much the city itself but what it represents to me. Don’t get me wrong, Cleveland is awesome. We’re definitely a lot more cool than anyone gives us credit for. But a lot of the things I really enjoy are simply because they’re so different than what my life used to be like.

Before living here I was in my early twenties, in a long term relationship where I was unhappy, thinking “well, this is my life. This is what it’s going to be like. Too late to do anything about it, I’m already so invested.” It’s not that anything was critically wrong but I certainly wasn’t fulfilled. There wasn’t any excitement or adventure. Then it was like one day I woke up and realized “Woaaah, nooooo! Girl, you gotta do you!” …Except it wasn’t a huge dramatic realization at all. It happened slowly over a long period of time but as soon as those whispers in my mind got louder they were impossible to ignore. Something had to happen.

If you’ve been reading The Dainty Squid for a while now you’d probably agree that things started to change when I got my license at the ripe old age of twenty-three. It opened my eyes that there was a lot more out there in the world than the life I had built in Geneva. I wanted – no, HAD – to see more, do more, be more! Things changed pretty rapidly after that.

On the way home from purchasing my first car back in 2013,  I spotted an abandoned building off the highway. On the side of the building it read “READ MORE BOOKS”. I lost it! It was the coolest graffiti I had ever seen (There is zero graffiti where I come from, okay?) I couldn’t imagine who would paint that? Why? Or even how they got up there! It blew my little country girl mind. I just loved it so much. I wanted so badly to pull over and photograph that building but couldn’t imagine getting off the freeway to try and find this building. And getting out of the car near it? No waaaay.

I met Jeff a mere month after moving up here and not long at all after that he took me inside that building not knowing just how special that was to me. Since that first time, I’ve been in just about every inch of that building. I’ve watched the sunset from the roof, and I’ve even been up the water tower.

Three years after seeing that building for the very first time from the side of the highway, I live within walking distance. Up until early last week I actually had never considered juuust how close I was to it. I wanted to take a photo of it with a new camera and figured I’d just walk. I planned for it taking a lot longer but in less than ten minutes Klaus and I there. Being there, in front of this building, with my puppy dog, my camera and not a care in the world got me feeling some sort of way and I just had to type it all out.

I drive by this building on the way home from the grocery store, and it’s visible when I get to the end of my street. I see it nearly every single day. I just can’t believe it’s my turf now. This world that was previously unimaginable to me is mine for the taking. It’s so silly for this building to mean so much to me but it’s really cool to see things come full circle like that.

Life is really rad, and honestly, it is NEVER too late to start again. Being happy is worth so much more than anything. Also, you should probably go ahead and read more books! 😉
xoxo

This building is actually in the process of being renovated. It’ll soon, well maybe not “soon”, be a school. It’s awesome to hear that it won’t be demolished and so fitting that a building with the words “read more books” will be a place kids will do just that!

on the cutting room floor

by Kaylah Stroup May 26, 2016
On the cutting room floor is a series that was started with the sole purpose of sharing photos that didn’t necessarily warrant a whole post but didn’t deserved to just be buried in my photo archives.

Last weekend was a good weekend. While I did nothing blog worthy per se, I did end up with a handful of photos I want to share. I think that celebrating the little happy moments in life is super important. Writing these things down and looking back on them is one of my favorite things. Not even the tiniest bit embarrassed to admit that I often get lost in my own blog archives. Life moves so fast and things change so quickly, it’s nice to stop for a second to acknowledge that despite all the little annoyances, everything is pretty darn cool.

A quick run down of the day these photos were taken; Sunday morning Jeff and I slept in (until like 8:30am which really isn’t sleeping in for anyone except us) then got breakfast at Bonbon, one of our favorite spots. If you go, get the bubble & squeak! Who would have ever guessed that brussel sprouts would end up being one of my favorite foods?! From there we headed over to the bridge we climbed on our first date, enjoyed a beautiful view of the city and watched the people below. A little bit later in the day we ended up in a cemetery geocaching where I found my first 17 year cicada. To end the day we took a short hike where I found mushrooms and more interesting critters.

Hope you’re having a lovely day.

I had a really really good mail day on Monday! This was a few days after the guy at the post office suggested I had already opened but simply forgot about a package that was missing since I get so much mail. What!? I got some new lipstick, and some new jewelry and I was feeling fly! I normally try to avoid taking outfit photos in the evening, especially on nice days because there are just so many people out and about in the city. I don’t care who you are, or how confident you are, taking photos of yourself alone in front of people feels at least a little bit silly. I drove around, checked out all my normal spots only to find people jogging, mowing the grass, or just hanging out there. I was determined though. I eventually found a nice little nook complete with buffed graffiti. Now I’m all for graffiti and can’t help but think it’s a little bit silly when the city wastes money to paint over it in a color completely different than the wall was originally. I’m not really sure how that actually helps improve the buildings appearance. I’ve come to enjoy the way it looks when all these different colors are layered like in these photos. The city is unintentionally creating their own art.

Aaaaanyway, the package that was really missing eventually showed up on Monday which was cause for great excitement. I bought myself new jewelry for my facial piercings. The other day I was sitting in bed browsing the internet when I realized in the decade I’ve had these four piercings I’ve never bought myself anything new. After that thought occurred there was no stopping me. I am not a patient person. I headed over to BodyArtForms. My tried and true for body jewelry. You can browse all your past orders on there, and I’ve apparently been buying since 2006! Woweeee! I’m obsessed with opals, and they had the perfect piece for each one of my piercings!

As I was browsing other things on there I found the most beautiful septum piece. I have my septum pierced, which a lot of people may not have even noticed since I never wear visible jewelry in it. It’s stretched to 7/16″ and in some photos of me you can actually see right through it if my head is turned to the side. I decided since the jewelry was soooo pretty I would just go for it.  If I didn’t like it, no big deal! It was the first of my four new pieces that I tried on, and I LOVE IT. I feel kind of like I’m playing dress up which I really enjoy. It’s not something I plan on wearing all the time, just when I feel extra sassy…which I totally did after putting it in which is why I haaaad to take outfit photos immediately! In the ten years I’ve had this thing pierced I’ve never worn jewelry in it
that anyone else could see so this kind of feels like having it done for
the first time!

For your enjoyment, a very graceful Kaylah blowing the mature seeds off of a plant and subsequently eating some….

Hope you’re having a lovely Wednesday!
xoxo

PS. You can see the last time I shared photos of this dress on the blog, approximately a year ago, here.

two minute beach clean

by Kaylah Stroup May 24, 2016
beach trash, lake erie, cleveland, green, plastic

Since my last found on the beach post there have been some definite improvements to my favorite beach. Judging by the marks in the sand, they did that thing where they just plow everything into a dumpster. It gets rid of all the driftwood, a lot of the sand, and some of the trash. I’m not 100% sold on this method of cleaning up the beach considering the fact that it just pushes a lot of the trash into the remaining sand, making it sort of like buried treasure. Better than nothing, I guess. It does nothing to stop more stuff from washing up though.

I mentioned it briefly in one of my previous beach related posts but I recently started following a bunch of other folks who really love the beach, and all things beach related. Seriously you have to check out plastic monster! I wish they posted more. This fills up my explore feed with even more of these beach lovin’ people. I’m normally a little creeped out by how “smart” the internet it, how it shows me what it thinks I want to see, but I’ve really enjoyed being exposed to more beach combers and their finds.

Something I kept seeing was the hashtag “2minutebeachclean“. I was super excited to find so many other people who helped pick up their beaches. It was also reassuring to see that my beach isn’t the only one with these issues, that it’s a global problem! I mean, obviously it’s not a good thing that it’s a global problem but when I share these posts and everyone comments “MY beach isn’t that dirty! Lake Erie must be gross!” you start to think “Oh no! What if it is only my beach!?”

After browsing instagram for a little bit I felt inspired to do my own two minute beach clean. The photos below show everything green I picked up in a short stroll from one side of the beach to the other. It’s a fairly quick walk. I just used google maps to measure it, 530ft wide. I was planning on writing “this was obviously longer than a two minute beach clean” but I guess technically it could have been since it’s such a short distance. It definitely didn’t take long to pick it up. As with every one of my found on the beach posts, I spent more time organizing it all for photos than I did picking it up.

plastic, lake erie, plastic pollution
lake erie, great lakes, trash, beach trash

According to the 2 Minute Beach Clean website, June 11th is first annual beach clean up day. Even if you don’t live near a beach, take a few minutes out of your day pick up some litter on your daily walk, from the parking lot, from the ditch, etc. Every little piece counts!

bikes, a picnic + Cleveland

by Kaylah Stroup May 23, 2016
Slightly obsessed with this photo of Jeff. It’s the lock screen on my phone. *Insert a million heart emojis.*

The weather is finally warming up again in Ohio. I feel like I’ve probably said that five times already by now but this great state keeps doing that awesome thing where it’s warm then all of a sudden the temperatures drop like crazy and we have a second, third or forth winter. It’s a wild ride but it makes you appreciate the warm weather even more.

Jeff and I have been really really bad about riding our bikes this year. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve ridden in the last few months. It honestly makes me feel a little bit guilty. I definitely miss it. I want so badly to get back into biking as regularly as I used to. Since it finally is warming up, hopefully for good this time,  I suggested we go on a bike ride / picnic date to get the ball rolling.

We biked to a secluded spot along the river. It was the perfect place to
take a break, and have a picnic. We watched as boats and rowers made
their way across the river. Rowing is apparently a really huge thing here. Must of had fifteen groups of them go by!
Some geese and their babies joined us for a bit, coming just close
enough to hiss at us a whole bunch. The sun set slowly and treated us to a most beautiful golden
hour. Sometimes I still can’t believe I live here. It’s like the
absolute furthest thing from where I grew up but somehow it fits so
perfectly for me. I can’t get over the fact that I can just hop on my
bike and three miles away watch the sunset across downtown Cleveland. We
aren’t the grandest city, but we’re definitely something special. As much as I daydream about running away to the desert I can’t imagine living anywhere else but here.

For our picnic, Jeff made us sandwiches which I really wish y’all could taste through the screen. I’ve never been all that crazy about lunch meat but I would have to say Jeff showed me the way. These sandwiches are a super simple food made gourmet. That boy can pick some fiiiine ingredients! Drinks? Those are my strong point. I picked up some Milo’s Cafe Style Tea in two flavors, green citrus tea, and sweet tea. This is the first summer of my life where I actually like sweet tea. Do you guys get jealous of drinks other people really love but your taste buds don’t appreciate yet? I definitely do. Coffee was one of those things, sweet tea and lemonade too. I’ve come around to all of them. FINALLY. These new teas are affordable, organic, and made with no preservatives, additives or acids.  We nearly polished off the whole bottle. Bike rides make me incredibly thirsty and this stuff is so refreshing! Use the store locator to find where to purchase near you. If you’re in CLE, Steelyard WalMart carries it! PS. They’ll be located in the refrigerated juice + dairy section since it’s all natural!

I ended up getting a flat tire, and we had to walk back home after eating but it was seriously such a gorgeous evening that I didn’t even mind. I’m pretty sure picnics in this spot will need to be a regular thing for us!

Cheers to you, Cleveland! I’m so glad to have moved here.
