what I wore : note to self

by Kaylah Stroup May 17, 2017

kaylah doolan, overalls, what I wore, cleveland fashion blog, green hair, cleveland blog pin game, lapel pin, denim jacket, green hair cleveland fashion blogger, green hair, pink demin jacket, target style, kaylah doolan, cleveland green hair, fashion blog, what I wore, kaylah doolan palladium boots, what I wore, eyeball socks

A list of things I need to write, read, and remember…

The beauty of another person doesn’t diminish my own.

You don’t have to be petite and delicate to be a beautiful woman. There is nothing wrong with being tall, and there is definitely nothing wrong with curves.

Not having a flat stomach does not ruin an entire outfit. No one actually gives a shit, and if they do… well they aren’t the kind of people you want in your life anyway.

The human body is an ever changing thing. My weight will fluctuate and that’s perfectly fine.

what I wore : blue + brown

by Kaylah Stroup April 26, 2017

green hair, what I wore, fashion post, cleveland fashion blog what I wore, cleveland fashion blog, green hair, cleveland, green hair, fashion blog,

I’m thinking these might be my last outfit photos with bright green hair. (Extra emphasis on ‘bright’ because I’ll probably have another with my currently faded color) If I say that I have to do it, right? That’s half the reason I’m writing it, to be honest. I’ve been rocking this green hair for over a year which is definitely a record for me. I love it and I usually stick with the saying ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.’ But touching up my hair isn’t all that fun anymore. It’s a chore. I’m no longer excited about my green hair as often as I feel like I should be which means it’s time to move on. My roots are pretty long right now and the idea of bleaching them and just slopping on some green dye feels boring.

I’m nervous though because I know I’ll miss it. I remember someone commenting years ago that I could pull off all the colors they’d seen me in but no one can pull off green and then in my head I was ‘Oh yeah? Watch this.’ Green kind of feels like my natural hair color at this point. It suits me wonderfully, and I really dig being a swamp princess.

I guess I should order some dye today if I really want to do this. What color combination do you think I should do next? I’m honestly not sold on a color yet.

what I wore : incognito elephants

by Kaylah Stroup April 11, 2017

Let it be known that this is the dress that converted me to a shift dress fan and I think my summers will be 100 times more enjoyable now. You might even say it “shifted” my views. Ba dum tissss. If you hadn’t noticed my dresses are basically all fit and flare. I feel like that’s a super flattering style and it just works on my body. The thing is, it’s miserable in the summer especially when you wear a belt along with it. It’s just so hot having that fabric clinging to you. Even if the rest of you is a decent temperature there’s just this sweaty band around your midsection. That sounds gross but that’s life. I’d basically just stopped wearing dresses in the summer except on cool days and when absolutely necessary. It’s hard to feel cute when you’re sweaty. (Unless that sweat is well earned. I don’t know about you but I feel my best after a good bike ride. I swear my skin looks so much nicer than any other time. Anywaaaay…)

Urban Outfitters has some seriously cute summer dresses right now that I already had my eye on so when they reached out to work together I was like “Yes, pleeease!” I always thought that shift dresses weren’t for me … then I tried this one on! I was drawn to the pattern but was a little nervous about the style. Like I said, it’s not a cut I would normally gravitate toward. Well, after putting it on I literally twirled my way out of the fitting room to show my mom who agreed it looked darn good! It’s so breezy. Despite not coming in at the waist like I thought I “needed”, I feel like it looks super cute. It even has a cutout on the back which I love. It’s basically the ultimate summer dress! Plus black and white always look amazing with my hair color.

Also, how long did it take you to spot the elephants on this dress? I thought it was just squiggles but when I tried on the dress for Jeff he immediately said “cute elephant dress!” I was like “…wait. what?! nuh uh!” Now I can see them clear as day! I’m almost embarrassed I didn’t spot them right away.

what I wore : a food baby

by Kaylah Stroup April 5, 2017

Sharing outfit photos can be scary. There are a lot of people who think that because something is published or otherwise put out into the world that it’s up for debate or open to criticism. People tend to forget that behind every single thing there is a real person who is potentially reading these things, and being affected. It doesn’t even have to be a huge deal, a simple off handed comment can shift how someone thinks for the worst.

A year or so ago I shared a photo of Jeff and I. It was an adorable photo with a caption about our half anniversary but someone left a comment asking if I was expecting*. That caused me to look super closely at my body in that photo… and in every single photo I shared ever after that. My stomach is not flat. It never will be. I’m not pregnant…and I never plan to be. It shouldn’t be necessary for me to have to examine my body closely and meticulously before sharing photos for fear that someone will ask if last night’s sushi is a baby or comment that my knees are ugly. (Yes, that really happened. And yeah, that made me self conscious for a while until I realized that you have to be a real dingus to make fun of someone’s knees. I mean, THEY’RE KNEES. For the record, my knees look just like everyone’s knees)

Comments like these are why everything gets photoshopped. Why Madonna is photoshopped to look twenty years younger, why apps like facetune even exist, why bloggers edit out their pimples, and on, and on, and on. You can’t comment on these stupid things and also be outraged at the fact people photoshop themselves into oblivion. It just doesn’t work that way.

I’m mentioning all this because immediately after thinking “Oh, these turned out cute” my next thought was “Shoot, someone is going to ask if I’m pregnant. I just know it.” And then “darn it, you can really see the dye on my scalp.” I started trying to fix the dye along my hairline so my head didn’t look so blue but realized I definitely have better things to do. I have no reason to be ashamed that there is dye on my scalp. It happens. Every time I dye my hair, my scalp is the same color as my hair for a few days. I also have no reason to try and hide the fact my stomach isn’t completely flat. I love food. I eat well. So what?

I always feel a little nervous to share this sort of commentary. I don’t want to stir the pot or draw negative attention to myself but I definitely want to use my platform to remind people to be better to others. Nobodies life is all peaches and cream. Everyone struggles. Why add to that with silly little nitpicks? Do your best to raise other people up. Comment on the good things, instead of the “bad”! I’m going to leave you with one of my favorite little sayings…

“You shouldn’t point out things about people’s appearances if they can’t fix it in ten seconds.”

for your viewing pleasure, dye on my scalp.

*For the love of dog, STOP ASKING PEOPLE IF THEY ARE PREGNANT. If they want you to know, they’ll tell you. Otherwise, it’s none of yer bee’s wax. Even if you think you’re being friendly, it’s just intrusive. Women aren’t simply baby machines. I could rant about this subject for years but we should probably save that for another day.

Say “hello!” to my new favorite outfit! I’ve been trying really hard these past couple years to whittle my wardrobe down to items that are easy to wear, and that make me feel really great. I want a closet full of items that I don’t even have to think about. Things you just pop on and automatically feel like a million bucks. This dress is definitely one of those items especially when paired with a simple oversized sweater and some oxfords.

I was having one of those “try everything on!!” days at TJ Maxx recently and ended up taking this dress into the fitting room with me. It’s not my typical style (aka it’s not black and white, or a fit and flare style of dress) but I loved it immediately. I bought it with my trip to New Orleans in mind. It ended up being perfect for the weather down there. I kind of wished I could have just worn it all week. I also kind of wish I could just wear it every single day now that I’m back at home too.

Must find more dresses just like this!!!
xoxo

I am madly in love with the combination of light pink and green. Actually light pink is kind of my jam right now. I just looked over at my right hand where I have on the rose gold Apple watch, my mouse is resting on a pink mouse pad and I can see my Kindle which has a case of the same color. I haven’t fallen so hard for a color in my life. I’m not sure what it is but I think it’s probably partially because it goes with my hair so nicely and since this hair color doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon (despite the “Is that for St. Patrick’s Day” comments that make me want to rip it all out) I guess it’s a good thing I’ve fallen for a color that compliments it so well.

Hope you’re having a lovely week.

One of the best things about having a blog is being able to look back at your old posts. Similarly, one of the worst things about having a blog is being able to look back at your old posts. Heh! I often get lost in my own archives. I just keep clicking and clicking… and cliiicking. Things change so rapidly, even if it doesn’t really seem like it, its fun to look back and get a peek at what things used to be like. I have a love / hate relationship with my old outfit photos. I think a lot of them are kind of embarrassing but I’m happy to have documented them. I may look back now and think “Oh my goodness, what were you thinking?” but at the same time I feel very “Hah! You do you, girl!” about them too. It’s kind of hard to explain but a lot of those old photos it’s like I’m just looking at someone else.

Looking back at all those old photos has shown me how far my style has come in the past few years. I feel like I have a lot more of a consistent style, and that it’s a lot more wearable. Instead of buying things that have a really awesome print or whatever but maybe aren’t that practical I tend to purchase things that I know I’ll be able to wear often, that are comfortable, and that truly fit my lifestyle. No more super short dressed just because the pattern rocks! These photos, in particular, I feel show off that new Kaylah style. Maybe I’ll laugh at this outfit in another few years but I feel like it looks like it was put together by someone who has a pretty good idea of what works for them. It’s cute, it’s cozy, and that’s all I care about.

I do have to admit, these boots are slightly out of my comfort zone. I’m kiiind of obsessed with them and how badass I feel in them though. I’m hoping it will be like my intro to lipstick where I felt a little bit strange wearing it the first handful of times but eventually it just became totally normal. I tend to feel more comfortable in shoes that I can run in. I don’t know what that’s about, it’s not like I ever have to run anywhere. Maybe just a weird built in brain safety feature? I’m new-ish to heels of any sort and these are my very first pair of ankle boots but daaaang they look good. I don’t know about you, but I feel like a BOSS walking in heels. I know, someone out there is snickering at me thinking these heels are high but they are for me! I’m currently eyeing up this pink pair of ankle boots. I’ve put together so many outfits in my head with them already.
Happy Tuesday!

what I wore : stripes, again!

Super cute black and white striped dress that fits like a glove for under 20 buckeronis? Heck yeah! It obviously loses some cool points for not having pockets but still! This beauty will definitely be a staple in my summer wardrobe. Paired with my trusty jean jacket? Yeeeah. It’s gonna be perfect.

Speaking of summer, Cleveland got hit with some really crazy weather over the weekend. January 21st and it’s 60 degrees? I’ll take it! I was comfortable outside with bare legs! I was even comfortable without my cardigan on. A Sleeveless dress! In January! In Ohio! WHAT!? Warm weather after the cold breaks is always like that though. 60 degrees at the end of summer and I’m trying to wear hoodies, and my fuzzy socks. At the end of cold weather (or some random warm day in middle of winter)? I’m wearing as little clothes as possible. It just felt so good to be outside, not wearing a million layers. The sun was shining down and everything felt so right. Just a little pick me up in the middle of the worst, most depressing seasons like “here’s what you have to look forward to in just a few months!” It was a much needed surprise.

The random super warm weather also made me even more excited to be living in my new neighborhood. I feel so much safer taking Klaus on walks here than where I lived before therefore we’ve obviously been taking a lot more walks. We’ve been living here just under a month and I feel like it’s already made a huge impact on both Klaus and I. Obviously dogs are happier after they’ve been walked and have used up their energy but those walks help me feel a lot less stressed too. I’m so looking forward to exploring the neighborhood with my puppy dog even more once the weather warms up for good.

One last thing related to my neighborhood and the warm weather. Like I had mentioned before, my apartment was completely remodeled right before we moved in so my landlord had been spending a ton of time here over the last few months. He was telling Jeff and I that there is a neighborhood pig that goes on walks with it’s owner. We were both like “NO WAY! How cool!” and figured we probably wouldn’t see it for a while. A few days later my landlord came over to finally hook up our washer and dryer (DUDE. It feels so good to finally do laundry!) Shortly after he left he called and asked if it was still working to which I was like “Uh? Yeah? You just left?” then he revealed the true reason for calling… “The pig. It’s out walking at the corner of Professor and College” Sooo needless to say, I threw a leash on Klaus and we literally ran outside. I found the pig almost immediately – prompting this tweet. It was just happily waddling along behind it’s mom. I watched as three people stopped to talk to her about her unique pet. I’ve got my fingers crossed for lots more pig sightings this summer. I will most definitely be updating you, hopefully with photos and a name, next time I see the piggy!

what I wore : owl get the hang of it

My blogging schedule since moving has been… erratic, to say the least. December was kind of a mess for me. I was so anxious to move that I had a hard time concentrating on anything. I constantly felt behind in my work, and was so looking forward to getting the move over with. I somehow thought that once I moved things would just fall into place but I’m definitely still struggling to establish routine here. Owl get the hang of it soon though, don’t you worry! I finally got my office mostly in order last night, that should definitely help.

Jeff and I were both nervous about moving in together. I mean, we’ve been dating for nearly three years now but we’re both people who truly treasure our alone time. As much as I felt like it was a little lonely living by myself at times, I was worried about having to share my space again. Our new apartment is honestly the perfect space for us though. It’s not huge but the way it’s laid out makes it perfect for just squirreling yourself away and chilling. The fact that we each get our own office is a godsend! It’s also ridiculously soundproof too. His office isn’t that far away from mine, and I know he listens to his music really loud but I can’t hear a thing! Anyway the point of that was that even though I had planned to squirrel away in my office and work my tail off, I’ve been having a hard time pulling myself away from settling in, and making this place ours. Also, cuddling! Cuddling takes up a lot of my time now that the four creatures I like to cuddle live in the same house.

I am really happy these days. I couldn’t have even dreamed of it being this much fun to finally share a space with Jeff.  I’m trying really hard to get back into a routine where I spent a good chunk of my day typing out words for you to read but sometimes it’s just more fun to sit on the couch, watch American Pickers, and try not to happy cry about the fact my pets are finally becoming real friends. I sure hope your 2017 is off to as equally wonderful start.
