my blogging essentials – staying organized

by Kaylah Stroup January 25, 2016
tooth containers by Hello Hopscotch full of my favorite pens – the seven year pen!

Someone recently tweeted me to ask about how I stay organized which was the push I needed to finally write an updated post about my blog planning process and how I stay organized. It’s been on my to-do list for a while now.

I know there are tons of apps, and websites for staying organized. Of course, even my phone has a calendar I could use to keep all my blog related stuff together but my number one tool for staying organized is, without a doubt, my editorial calendar. Keeping an editorial calendar, whether digitally or on paper, is, in my opinion, essential! Giving it a fancy name makes it sound so much more complicated than it really is. In reality it’s just a planner from Target. It could be any planner, the important thing for me is that it shows the whole month on one page as shown below.

I write each individual blog post on a sticky note and then place them on the date I plan on posting them. I use sticky notes because I like how bright they are. It helps the whole process not to feel so mundane and it looks really pretty! Also, the real reason, I’m able to move posts if need be. There are some days I just don’t feel like posting what I had planned or maybe another post just feels more appropriate for that date.  I can’t stand scribbles in notebooks, or even use of two different pens together so using sticky notes just helps everything feel neater.

I normally begin working on an upcoming month’s calendar a week or so before the first. I start by filling in any regular features, like Friday Favorites, or anything I’ve planned way in advance. Then I start to fill in the spots with well thought out ideas, and posts I have in my drafts. After I’ve queued a post it gets a piece of tape to indicate that it’s good to go! I’d like to pretend that I plan out a whole month at once but I definitely don’t. My goal is always to be one week ahead. Ideally everything is queued up, but as long as I have a solid idea of what I’ll be posting I’m satisfied. The whole purpose is just so I’m not scrambling at the last minute for a post.

My two other must haves are…
â–´ Notebooks and notepads x10000. You guys, I am a sucker for a pretty notebook or notepad.  Moorea Seal’s office section has more than a few gems, Anthropologie has a great selection of paper goods, and Paper Source, of course, is home to lots of pretty notebooks! TJ Maxx might be my favorite place to grab them though. Most of the time they’re around $2.99, and they’re always getting new ones.

The newest addition to my “collection” is this notepad/calendar thing-a-majig. Seen above. I’ve found it super useful to keep track of social media stuff, and jot down notes for the whole week. Beside the column for Monday there is skinny blank column which I wrote down a few tasks I need to do everyday such as sharing posts on twitter, and facebook. I also use it to keep track of how much water I drink.

I use the above notepad to write down ideas, and things I need to do that are kind of broad. I use regular list style notepads for more specific daily tasks. Back in October I shared a post, which you can find here, about how I write my lists.

Notebooks are good for keeping track of post ideas. The one shown in the photos above (a TJ Maxx score!) is where I’m currently writing down all my ideas. I used some washi tape to break it down into sections.  Just like my list making, I do a lot of my note writing in a few different steps based on how thought out the idea is. Sometimes, if I’m super lucky, what pops into my head is a complete post idea. In that case I’ll outline the whole post in my notebook. Other times I might have a really vague thought that maybe, just maybe, I’ll be able to mold into a post – those go into a different section.

I’ve found the most helpful thing for me is to write every single thing down, no matter how crazy or irrelevant it seems. Usually I’ll be able to work with it at some point, it might not be now but maybe in six months it’ll be exactly what I want to write about.

â–´ A good pen, obviously! Lately I’ve been using the heck out of this one. I like it for the same reason I actually disliked it when I first got it, I write really tiny with it! I guess I tend to write fairly large but with this pen I almost have to write small. My other favorite pens are the seven year pens by Seltzer Goods. They’re super smooth, and can write 1.7 meters a day for seven years!

So that’s that! I’m not the most organized person but making lists upon lists on pretty paper kind of makes me feel like I am! 😉

Exploring Akron

by Kaylah Stroup January 21, 2016

Last Saturday Jeff and I had plans to make a real nice lunch together, and get lots of work done. I just had to run a few errands first. About thirty minutes after he left my apartment I get a text “How are your errands going? FYI You, Jason, and I are going down to Akron when you’re ready.” Well, that was a change of plans but I didn’t mind. The cold weather has me feeling blue so any time I get the chance to get out and take photos I’m jumping on it! I hadn’t even left the house to start my errands yet. Instead I layered up, packed up my camera gear, and shortly after we were off!

In case you’re not from Ohio, or even the US* – Akron is the next large-ish city over from where I live. It’s approximately a forty-five minute drive away and I’ve probably only been there a handful of times. There’s not quite as much as abandonment there as in Cleveland but that wasn’t all we were looking for. Put simply, we were just looking for something new. Jeff actually grew up right outside Akron so nothing is all that new for him but it’s at least a little bit less familiar than our surrounding area. We were out looking for tracks to walks, tunnels to explore, and anything worthy of a photograph.

Jeff telling us a story about a time he was frightened by a plastic bag in this same spot.

After walking the tracks for a while I was ready for something a bit more protected from the weather. I realize that it doesn’t actually look that cold out which is exactly why this winter is so depressing. It looks like it’s nice out, the sun might even be shining but as soon as you step outside you get smacked with reality. It’s freezing!

Jeff knew of an abandoned factory that we might be able to get. After a quick drive, a short walk, and use of some muscles I’d realize the next day that I apparently hadn’t used in a while we were inside.

There wasn’t much left in the factory at all, and, to be honest, I feel a little rusty shooting abandoned buildings. The whole time we were in there I just felt like I was shooting horribly. I was having trouble composing photos. When I got around to editing them the next day I was decently surprised with what I got. I wish I would have taken more photos!

peeling paint, abandonedabandonedpeeling paint, abandoned factory

After making our way out of the factory we were all ready for some grub. Something local, something kind of quick so we could get back out before it got too late. Jeff suggested Diamond Deli which… I don’t even have words for. Their website says their goal is to “make damn good sandwiches” which they are definitely doing. I don’t recall what I even ate except for the fact it had some sort of mustard/mayo combo on it which was just awesome. I truly regret not bringing my camera in so I could have a photo of my sandwich for this post.

We drove around a bit more after gorging ourselves, and spent some time around the tracks shooting photos of trains before eventually calling it a night. All in all, a successful day!
xoxo

* Sometimes people name cities in their posts but it literally means nothing to me because I have no idea where that place is, how far of a trip it is for them, etc. Just thought including a little reference there would be helpful!

Photojojo Iris Lens Series Review

by Kaylah Stroup January 19, 2016
iPhone lens
phone case from Moorea Seal

I’m sure by now y’all know about iPhone lenses. You can usually buy them for dirt cheap on eBay… and they’re not actually all that impressive. recently released some but they’re way, way more awesome than anything I’ve ever seen before. They were kind enough to send over a set for me to review and I am super excited to share with you a little bit about them!

First a little run down on the …
â–´ They are compatible with the iPhone 6/6s, 6/6s plus, as well as the Samsung S5 and S6.
â–´ There are three different lenses. 10x macro for all your close up needs, 100 degree wide for groupshots, awesome landscapes, and interiors, and 180 degree fisheye for unique portraits.
â–´ You can use them with or without a case on your phone.
â–´ The three lens set (macro, wide, and fisheye) is $99 currently or you can purchase individual lenses for $69.

It’s super easy to assemble, if “assemble” is even the correct word for this scenario. The kit comes with very simple directions and if you’re still having trouble Photojojo has videos on how to put everything together that you can find . If you have a case, which I always do, it’ll attach to the small peg shown below. It’s a thin piece of plastic that fits under your case and can be left in at all times. Then the lens mount is secured by a bungee thing-a-majig that’s basically just like a heavy duty hair tie. Now you’re ready to shoot. Easy peasy!

My first impression getting the lenses out of the box was that they’re heavy! I mean they’re not going to weigh you down or anything but I was surprised how much weight they have to them. Unlike cheaper alternatives these lenses aren’t made from plastic. The glass inside is synthesized by the same factory as Leica, Canon, and Nikon. If there’s one thing I’ve learned buying lenses for my DSLR it’s that good glass is heavy.

Below I have a photo example from each of the lenses. I took each photo from the same spot, just with and without the Iris lens attached. If you’re looking for more photo examples Photojojo has a for the lenses with a handful of examples.

 with Iris fisheye – without

photojojo iris lens series
 with Iris macro – without

photojojo Iris
 with Iris wide – without

After a month of use, color me impressed! All three lens performed beyond my expectations. Although it’s probably the one I’ll use the least – that macro kicks some serious butt. It’s not that easy to see from the small photo shared above but it’s shaaaaarp (and not just because it’s a cactus. Ha!)

There were only two small things I found frustrating with these lenses. One – The lens can be kind of tricky to switch while the mount is attached to your camera, especially if you put them in wrong. I know you’re thinking “well, obviously Kaylah…” What I mean is that both the mount and the lens are circles but have a flat portion, and that’s where you’re supposed to line them up. The thing is that it’s easy to forget to do that because the lens still fits even if you don’t line up the flat spots. Even when you do have it in correctly it’s a little bit difficult and I have yet do it super easily. It’s always kind of a struggle.

Number two – finger prints and smudges! It’s basically impossible to not touch the glass while switching lens or attaching the mount. It’s not a huge deal but you have to be aware of it. Having smudge free glass makes all the difference between a good photo and a bad photo! I’ve been carrying around a lens cleaning cloth with me.

Professor approved!

I’m honestly not all that huge on taking photos with my phone. A recent example of this would be Anji asking me to take a photo of a bouquet for her. I’m sitting there playing on my phone but my first response was “With what? I don’t have my camera today.” I feel like these tiny little lenses are kind of going to change everything for me though. I’ve already found them making me want to use my phone for photos more often. I think the wide lens and I are going to be real good friends! I give these lenses two thumbs way up!

If you have any questions about the feel free to leave a comment, read the Iris FAQ, or reach out to someone over at (they’re the nicest people, I swear!)
xoxo

Full disclosure: Photojojo provided me the kit free of charge in return for an honest review, and that’s just what you’re reading!

What I’ve been reading…

by Kaylah Stroup January 13, 2016

Well, it’s kind of been a while since I’ve blogged about books, huh? I, of course, missed reading but I’m sure you all know it’s easy for the habit to fall to the wayside. The fact that it’s bubble bath season (basically every other night, all winter long baby!) coupled with taking the train downtown a few times a week means I’ve had a lot more time to read than normal. It’s kind of like a snowball too, the more time I spend reading the more I want to read.

What I’ve been reading…
â–´ Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs. It’s the third book in the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series, which I’m sure you’ve probably seen me reference before. I’m not sure I can pick a favorite from the three. They were all great! I honestly can’t recommend these books enough. If you haven’t read them yet, stop reading this post and get to it! …Before the movie comes out this December! Ahhh! Tim Burton, you guys!

â–´ Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson. I read Jenny’s first book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, and LOVED it. So when Amazon was all “hey, that author you loved that book by is writing another one!” I was pumped. Awesomely enough a very kind person offered to send it my way (Thank you, Sarah!) As soon as it showed up I basically spent the next three nights in the tub, getting pruny, and devouring this book. Furiously Happy is more a collection of writings by the author than one single piece that flows. There were certain parts I enjoyed more than other but the simple fact is it made me laugh, it made my cry, and I still feel a great deal of respect for Jenny. This book definitely isn’t for everyone but if you liked her first one definitely give this one a try too!

â–´ Suits Me : The Double Life of Billy Tipton by Diane Wood Middlebrook. This book has been hanging out on my bookshelf for a pretty long time. I just kept putting it off for one reason or another but finally started it last week. In full disclosure, I haven’t finished it yet but it’s a pretty crazy story so far. Jazz pianist Billy Tipton was born Dorothy Tipton which nearly no one knew until he died. This guy married multiple women who claimed to not know! I’m not 100% sold on the author, it seems like her writing might eventually lose my interest but the story itself is very intriguing. I can’t wait to see what happens.

â–´ The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I feel like I’m not allowed to give an honest review on a classic. I have been staring at my computer for a little while now trying to figure out what to type about The Bell Jar. It kept me interested for a little while but after a while it felt repetitive, and I was basically just reading to finish it and so that no one would talk to me on the train. But hey, I’m glad I finally read the book.

What have you been reading? I’m always looking for recommendations! Normally I have a pretty large collection in my to-read pile but I’ve nearly finished them all up. I need some new books in my life.
xoxo

favorite 10 abandoned spots in 2015

by Kaylah Stroup January 7, 2016
motel

Finally, the last of my 2015 recaps! The year before last I shared my 10 favorite abandoned spots of the year and couldn’t resist choosing my favorites from 2015. I didn’t get out as much last year as I did the previous year but regardless I still had some really amazing adventures. Factories, multiple trailer parks, a greenhouse, and even a stretch of highway that hasn’t been driven on in years. My favorite had to be the massive abandoned hospital though. I’ve honestly had multiple dreams about that place since. I’m chomping at the bit to go back!

 party supply company

 trailer park

greenhouse (in the winter without snow, in the spring, and in the fall.)
abandoned around Cleveland

hospital
school
 factory
rubber duck factory

highway

Here’s to another year of great adventures!

2016 Bulletin Board

by Kaylah Stroup January 6, 2016

At the beginning of every year I clear off my bulletin board and hang up all new things. I try to avoid using anything that was up in the previous year although sometimes there is something that I like too much to not put back up! It’s a cleansing process, it’s relaxing, and it’s a much needed change of scenery.

This year’s new board photos also come with a peek at my new office! Apparently that’s not all that rare though, out of the five years I’ve documented this only two years share the same room. I’m a restless little thing, what can I say? While this new office is still a work in progress I’ve got my computer corner all set up. It feels awfully cozy in here. I’m looking forward to putting the finishing touches on this room and sharing photos.

A few sources :
moon calendar, see the world pennant, friend to bugs patch, where is my mind print, cactus print, tooth patch, fuck yeah ribbon, teeth containers , keyboard decals

Posting on Sundays isn’t really my thing. Not for any real reason, I just never really do. I guess I like to pretend I have a day off. Hah! Anyway, I just wanted to drop in and leave this here. Another look back at 2015. Posting so many recaps always starts to bug me. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy reading other folks but I guess it just starts to feel repetitive on my end. The thing is though I LOVE looking back through these recaps a few years later (okay, okay, a few months later is usually fun too!) So to future me, 2015 was pretty cool. You’re welcome for the reminder!

Friday Favorites # 345

by Kaylah Stroup January 1, 2016
Yep, I’m definitely going to need this Mrs. Doubtfire lapel pin.
 (via: Amy Blue Illustration)
This dress + this dress both belong in my closet.
(via: Modcloth)
Perrin‘s work is SO gorgeous. I’m particularly fond of this print.
 (via: Made by Perrin)
A prickly pear note pad! I wish all my favorite artists made note pads…
 (via: Idlewild Co.)
Don’t mind me, just melting over this pup in cute sweaters. Pipolli has a handful of pup sweaters available for sale. I so wish Klaus looked that good in clothes. The lil dude in the photos below just fills them out so well.
 (via: Pipolli)
Founds this on tumblr earlier in the week and knew I had to share, headstone 2016 mini calendar!
 (via: Pam Wishbow)
Flies for your nails!
(via: YVNGPEARL)
I was about to be all “Oh man, I wish Land of Nod made adult stuff” but technically this amazing quilt comes in queen so the only thing really stopping me from having the snazziest bed is the price. I have always been hesitant to spend much money on quilts since I do have three pets. They’re not necessarily destructive or anything but a quilt has to be tough, and able to be washed often. Can anyone vouch of Land of Nod’s bedding? Or recommend any tough bedding? Obviously black and white is first choice. 😉
(via: Land of Nod)
Now that I’m pretty darn confident in my succulent growing skills, I love the idea buying cuttings instead of grown plants. San Pedro Cactus sells cuttings in a variety of different quantities. I definitely want to snag some of those when spring comes around.

(via: San Pedro Cactus)
These needle felted hearts are so awesome! Sarah of Once Again Sam is one talented lady!

(via: Once Again Sam)
I don’t think I am ever going to stop being amazed by Andie’s Specialty Sweets. These mushrooms just kill me.

(via: Andie’s Specialty Sweets)

Such a nice little message to see as you leave the house each day.

Link Love…
â–´ All about this “Boss Lady” lapel pin!
â–´ Have you seen Sweet Saba’s designer candy yet? The candy retainer is my favorite.
â–´ I love how Margot from Strange Flora always sneaks plants into her photos.
â–´ These taco note cards are kind of hilarious. The note cards come with stickers so you can build your own!
â–´ Speaking of nice bedding, here are my dream sheets. Spoiler alert : they’re black and white striped, duh.
â–´ Slightly cheesy, super positive 2016 calendar? INTO IT.

Happy Friday and Happy New Year!!

This year I…

by Kaylah Stroup December 31, 2015
played in tide pools for the first time ever.
got a big fat crush on Toronto!
explored lots of interesting places people left behind.
grew lots and lots of plants.
tried more new foods than ever, and even kind of fell in love with cooking.
got to cross off a really silly goal that meant a whole lot.
then celebrated with a spur of the moment road trip tattoo.

started helping Anji out at the flower shop on occasion.

made the beach a cleaner place one neatly organized arrangement at a time.
made pals with lots of new critters including the always adorable Foxy Lady, and Tramp, and some friendly squirrels along the coast.
fell even more deeply in love with both the desert, and my favorite adventure partner.
did some highly questionable things like moving a mattress and lockers on top of Jason’s car.
spent a great deal of pedaling, a lot of the time just to go sit at the beach.
moved into a new apartment.
got back into one of my favorite hobbies.
experienced some truly magical sunsets, my favorite being in Morro Bay.
bought a new car two days before the end of the year!

And oh so much more!

For the past few years I’ve been doing a “This year I…” post. See 2011, 2012, 2013, +2014.
If you do a “This year I…” post, leave a link in the comments. I’d love to check it out.
