30 days of biking recap

by Kaylah Stroup October 1, 2015

Challenging myself to another 30 days of biking was a most excellent choice! Just like the 30 days of biking I did back in April this month definitely had it’s days where I wondered why I made such a silly goal, where it was hard to get out at all, and when I simply rode around the block just to get my ride in. There were days it was nearly too hot to function and days I rode in the pouring rain. Yesterday I rode with a hat and a jacket. I definitely chose a fun month to experience a little bit of everything in terms of weather. But hey, I did it!

Half way through the month my body was definitely feeling it – and it felt so good! I’ve always been the kind of person that is like “Oh wow, I worked out once, look how strong I am!” or “I ate some fruit, I’m probably the healthiest person ever” so 30 days on my bike has done wonders for my self confidence. It doesn’t necessarily matter if there is a physical difference, I feel awesome! I’d love to get to a point where getting out on my bike every day is something I do and don’t even think twice about. No matter how much I’m dreading doing it I have never ever gotten back and not felt excellent. After a ride my mind is more clear, my body feels great, and I swear my skin is prettiest after a light sweat.

After spending so much time off my bike at the beginning of summer I was almost certain there was no way I would reach my goal to hit 1,000 miles before the end of the year. While I’m still a ways off it at least now seems like an attainable goal as long as I keep on pedaling.

In the last thirty days I have biked 155 miles, found a new favorite spot to bike to, and regained a good portion of my confidence that was lost back in April. I’d call it success!

gratuitous plant post

by Kaylah Stroup September 30, 2015

I suppose you could call this a gratuitous plant post, I just wanted to share some photos of my succulents. I am seriously so proud of these lil guys. I’ve never in my life had plants that were this happy, and growing this well. Taking photos of them is something I do often… maybe a little too often but it’s so much fun to be able to look back at a photo from the beginning of summer, last month, or even last week and see how much a certain plant has grown.

The weather will be changing soon and they’ll have to be moved inside for the winter. I’m a little bit nervous to see how they do being back inside. I’m worried there just won’t be enough sunlight inside but I guess the worst thing that can happen is they get leggy, and I have to propagate which just leaves me with more plants to play around with!

For the longest time I could never figure out how people got such nice full arrangements. I would try buy smaller plants and stuff them into a planter but it would never look the same. Growing my own plants has allowed me to finally achieve the look I have loved this whole time. So one my plant goals for next year is to work on my arrangements. Above is one of my favorites. The variety of colors, shapes, and textures is just perfect. I’m pretty proud those are all plants that started from a single leaf.

Along with probably twice the number of succulents, since I’m a lot less picky of an eater I think next year I want to grow some things of my own to eat. Kaylah’s pepper farm?! I just want to grow all the things. Gardening is so rewarding. Any of you guys grow anything this year you’re excited about?
xoxo

The Rubber Duck Factory Revisited

by Kaylah Stroup September 28, 2015

Last Sunday Jeff, Jason, and I attended a lecture on Cleveland history. We learned the history of a handful of buildings downtown, and ate lots of snacks. It was pretty awesome. Not only was what we were learning interesting I absolutely love seeing people talk about their interests. It was wildly obvious this man loved researching our city and that was enough to get me excited.

After the lecture I was feeling a serious urge to get into something abandoned. I guess it really just comes down to the fact that passionate people spark my passions. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what I love about photographing abandoned buildings but something I really enjoy is documenting changes.

Something during the lecture that piqued my interest was when he was talking about this headstone and how he was really glad someone had photographed it way back when because it is no longer legible. It’s just a worn down obelisk now. He mentioned that a lot of things can last for a while, they might stay in the same condition for hundred years then all of a sudden in the next fifty go rapidly down hill. I’ve found abandoned buildings to be a prime example of that.

After the lecture, while waiting on a friend to get off work, we walked over to “The Rubber Duck Factory” just to waste a little bit of time. I hesitated to even take any photos of the place because none will ever been fun as the ones from my previous visit but then I thought about why I loved photographing these places so much and what he had said about deterioration of things.

This old warehouse is in no way, shape or form as significant as a headstone but it’s crazy to see how quickly it’s just crumbling away like the headstone I mentioned above. So much has changed since my last visit; furniture is gone, someone has been dumping shrubbery, there is tons more graffiti, the roof in one of the largest sections has collapsed and most noticeably… I couldn’t find a single rubber duck. My last visit we gathered nearly five hundred of these dirty ducks. I checked all the spots I knew I hide ducks and didn’t see even one.

It’s funny to me that now anytime someone goes there they’ll be left wondering “Why in the world is this called The Rubber Duck Factory?” I love that I was able to go there and document a time where there was an abundance of ducks because no one else will be able to do that again.  …Unless the ducks show up again…? I guess that’s not totally out of the realm of possibility. Maybe they’ve just been kidnapped!? Oh man, someone should have totally turned this into a puzzle complete with a ransom note. Opportunity lost!

Like I said, this building isn’t all that important in Cleveland history but it’s certainly fun to record little things like this. Soon it will be demolished so that condos can be built and all that will be left will be the memories and photos myself and other photographers have captured.
xoxo

Find my post from my first visit here.

Sept 27, two days after drafting up this post, the Rubber Duck Factory actually burnt down. Such a crazy coincidence.

I was literally just thinking “Man, I wish I had rainboots that weren’t so tall” and then BAM! I stumbled upon these glitter ones.
 (via: Modcloth)
I’ve been thinking a lot about getting a hat to wear when I’m on my bicycle. I love the ridiculous pattern on this one. It’s so bright and fun.

(via: Mokuyobi Threads)
How awesome is this head stem badge?! Some sort of tooth related accessory is probably the only thing that could make my bike more awesome.

(via: Art By Winona)
Ah! A letterpress print block of a tooth. No idea what I’d do with it but I love it and it’d look great in my collection.

(via: Merry Sunshine)

Take a second to look at a close up of these beetles, they’re made of paper and other recycled materials. Isn’t that amazing?!

Mushrooms postcards!

Love the color of these pants. They’re perfect for fall.

I don’t normally clip my hair but I’m growing out a portion of my bangs so until they get long enough I am letting everything get long. 95% of the time they’re driving me crazy and I have to bobby pin them back. How fantastic would this cat hair clip look in my hair!!

2015 Fall Goals

by Kaylah Stroup September 23, 2015

It’s officially fall now! Everyone’s favorite season, or at least that’s what the blog world makes it seem like. I absolutely love fall. I know it basically only means winter is creeping up on us. While I’m not looking forward to snow I am looking forward to crunchy leaves, cool weather, wearing clothes I actually like, allllll the beautiful colors autumn brings and hot drinks!

The older I get the quicker times flies by. It used to feel like each season lasted for ages but now it seems they’re gone in the blink of an eye. I mean I know I complained all summer about the heat but dang, how is summer over already?! I want to make the most of my favorite season so I made a little list of goals I want to accomplish this fall.

This fall I want to…
â–´ Go to a haunted house! Or at least try my hardest to convince friends we have to go… I’m not going to a haunted house alone, and I already told Jeff it can’t be just me and him. I’m such a wuss I think the only way I won’t have a heart attack is to have someone there in my group who is more frightened than me. My only two haunted house experiences were when I was much younger. The first time I just buried my head in my brother’s back the whole walk, and the second time I turned around and walked out about two minutes in. Haha. I’d like to conquer this silly little fear.

â–´ Press lots of leaves. I don’t think I’ve pressed any plants all summer long and I suppose that’s fine because fall is my favorite time to press anyway!

â–´ Visit the abandoned greenhouse. I’ve visited the abandoned greenhouse twice now, once in the winter without snow and again in the summer. Ever since the first time I have been waiting eagerly to see it in the fall.

â–´ Accept the question “Did you do that for Halloween?” with grace. Or find a funny response… Normally I avoid having hair that coordinates with a holiday (orange near Halloween, green near Saint Patrick’s Day, red near Christmas, etc) but I really don’t want to dye my hair right now. I’m still loving the orange. I’m dreading hearing people ask that question though. I know it doesn’t sound that bad but when you hear it constantly and from people who say it with thinly veiled snark it gets old reeeeal fast.

â–´ Don’t forget how awesome the beach is. I kind of avoid the beach in the summer for the most part since there are so many people there. I love the beach in the fall because it’s so peaceful. I’m not longer in the habit of going though, I need to get back into the swing of it.

â–´ Take lots of photos! This season brings the prettiest colors, I want to capture them all!

â–´ Pick at least one bouquet of wild flowers. I love picking wild flowers and I used to take the time to pull over and pick myself bouquets fairly but honestly can’t remember the last time I did that. This apartment needs more flowers!

â–´ Visit the sunflower garden. There is a giiiiiant sunflower garden that was planted in memorial of a young girl that passed from cancer back in 2007. I’ve been seeing photos pop up of it a lot these last few days. I have to go see it in person.

â–´ Keep up the biking momentum! Fall weather is my favorite to bike in. It’s not too hot and it’s not too cold. I want to keep on racking up those miles.

â–´ Spring Fall Cleaning. I don’t understand spring cleaning seeing as the nice weather means you won’t actually be in the house very much. I’m all about that cool weather cleaning. My big thing I want to get all sorted out is my kitchen. Under the sink is a mess, and I know my cabinets could be neater. Also, it’s just me living here I don’t need ninety nine million mugs.

What are some of your goals for this fall? It’s not too late to make some if you haven’t already.
xoxo

bike style : good vibes only

by Kaylah Stroup September 21, 2015

details
sweatshirt – Mulberry Press Co.
shirt – Simplicity on a Saturday Tunic c/o Modcloth
necklace – Cactus Pendant c/o Moorea Seal
sunglasses – Lilly c/o Moorea Seal
leggings – Simple and Sleek Leggings c/o Modcloth
socks – Happy Socks
shoes – Wheel and Zeal Sneaker c/o Modcloth
There are a few things I’m reeeal excited to talk about today. First, let’s start with the big pink elephant in the room – I got a new bike! I’m over the moon to have the opportunity to work with State Bicycle Company, who I purchased my first bike from, on a little project. It’s more than flattering to be noticed by a company that you really really love. I’ll share more information on all this at a later date but in the meantime you can expect lots of photos of this pretty new thing here and on instagram.
Not quite as exciting as a bright pink new bike but I am really pumped about this outfit. I’m a little late to the leggings as pants party but for some reason the urge hit me earlier this month and I grabbed this pair from Modcloth. I wasn’t sure if I would feel comfortable wearing them out and about but the same day I got them in the mail I actually went ahead and ordered a second pair because they were just that perfect. Also in that first order was this shirt (it’s the same one as I have on under my sweatshirt except all black) I loved it so much I ordered the striped version. I wasn’t looking but I have definitely found my new favorite outfit. This is literally the coziest outfit ever. I just want to own a closet full of these leggings and shirts.

Hope you’re having a great start to your week!

just flowers…

by Kaylah Stroup September 16, 2015

Last week Jeff invited to come along with him while he worked on a photography project. We hiked to a waterfall, skateboarded a bit, and visited a community garden. It’s so late in the year that most everything was past it’s prime but there were still a handful of flowers, looking beautiful as ever. I took the opportunity to take lots of photos.

I kind of hate, okay – I really really hate, that flower photography is considered cheesy. Maybe I just think it’s cheesy? I feel like I’ve seen multiple places where people’s reactions to flower photos are how boring they are and that just kind of sticks in my head no matter how much I don’t want it to. With things I grow myself I at least feel like maybe a photo can be appreciated because of that, and people won’t feel so much like “it’s a flower, so what?” Actually, I’m not sure why I, or anyone at all, should ever feel the need to justify their photos. I know I shared some black and white photos I took a little while back that I had been holding on to because I didn’t feel like they fit the aesthetic my blog had but putting creative limits on something is always a really really bad idea. It felt really good to share those photos. So, on that note, here are some photos of flowers just because they’re pretty and I really enjoy them…

I have no idea where I’ll be living a year from now. That’s sounds very cryptic but it just means I’m open to whatever comes my way. I could be living in the same house, or I could be in another state. But I hope where ever I am I can have flowers. These ones have me aching for a massive garden of my own. I want my own personal field of wild flowers, a little bit of everything and lots of color.

These were all taken with my birthday lens, the 50mm f/1.2. I’m still madly in love with that lens. It weighs about ten tons but by golly, it is magic! I don’t know about you but when I save money for a while to buy something or put off buying something for a while when I finally get it it’s kind of just like “okay…cool… I have this thing now.” I was a bit worried that I would have hyped up this lens in my mind for so long that it wouldn’t live up to expectations. Yeah, definitely not the case. Basically every time I take a photo with it, which is more than once a day, I still get all giddy over it.

The Geauga County Fair

by Kaylah Stroup September 15, 2015

The weekend before last Jeff and I met up with my parents to spend the morning at the county fair.  Jeff had never been to a fair before so I was low key super excited to show him something that was such a big part of my life for so long. I was in 4-H from the time I was old enough to join until I was seventeen. I would count down the days until the fair. I saved all my money so I could buy slushies, strombolis, and fart bombs. It was basically the best week ever every single summer. The Geauga County Fair isn’t “my” fair but the sights, the smells, and just the whole vibe in general still gets me every time. The fair will always hold a very special place in my heart.

We arrived right as the fair was opening so we basically had the place to ourselves. The animals were, of course, my priority. I wanted to see, pet, and baby talk them all! My favorite was an alpaca named Dotty who was oh so precious but not photogenic at all. So here are a bunch of other photos from the day…

Look how pretty that horsey’s hair is!

Other than the animals two things that stick out to me about our visit are kettle corn and funnel cake. Those were the two things that were Jeff’s fair priority. You guys, how did I spend so much time at the fair and never once think “Hmm, I should probably try these things.” He made me try both and wooooooooow. We bought a big bag of kettle corn so I at least got to munch on that for a few days afterward.

I’m already looking forward to visiting again next year, half for the animals and half for the funnel cake.
xoxo

You can see 2013’s post from the fair here. There’s a photo of my parents posting by the same giant steer!
