a few of my favorite headstones

by Kaylah Stroup November 2, 2017

angel of death victorious, haserot, crying angel, headstone, cleveland, lakeview

The Haserot Angel. Lake View Cemetery. Cleveland, OH

Last year around this time I shared a list of my favorite cemeteries but some recent awesome finds have prompted me to start a list of my favorite headstones. Over the years I’ve been to tons of cemeteries. So many headstones look exactly a like, and as cheesy as it sounds, they just don’t make them like they used to. There are definitely exceptions though! So, I present to you, a list containing a few of my favorites I’ve seen made the journey to see in person…

▴ Giant lion

Lake View Cemetery. Cleveland, OH
I’ve spent hours wandering around Lake View Cemetery but only recently noticed this lion. When I turned around and spotted him for the first time he actually startled me. I think part of his appeal is that he just seems out of place.

weird headstone

▴ Specimens

State of Ohio Asylum for the Insane Cemetery
This one had been on my radar for years before I finally took the trip to go see it. I still can’t believe it’s real. Specimens in this case are most likely parts that had been removed during standard procedures and kept to study at the hospital. (Tumors, gallbladders, kidneys, etc) After a number of years it’s easy to imagine they’d probably have a pretty large collection of spare parts that they didn’t know what to do with. I guess it’s also in the realm of possibilities that it’s something a lot more sinister… Either way, this definitely ranks among my top three! The State of Ohio Asylum for the Insane Cemetery contains quite a few interesting headstones, definitely check out this post if you’d like to see more.

▴ Be of Good Courage

Bonaventure Cemetery. Savannah, GA
I don’t know what it is about this headstone but it first caught my eye back in 2014. I loved it immediately. When I returned to Savannah a few years later, though I had completely forgotten about it, I managed to end up stumbling upon it yet again in the massive cemetery. There’s just something about it… Find more photos of Bonaventure here.

▴ Skull with wings

Granary Burying Ground. Boston, MA
This isn’t so much about this particular headstone but in general, headstones with skulls on them are my favorite. It wasn’t until I visited Granary Burying Ground in Boston that I saw my first one. It’s fairly common on older headstones found in the North Eastern portion of the US but definitely not something you see around Ohio. I think I’m drawn to them because they seem like something that would be a Halloween decoration, something you’d see in cartoons, not something that is on a real headstone.

▴ Tom’s collage

Riverside Cemetery. Cleveland, OH
This is easily the weirdest headstone I have ever laid my eyes on. The first time I spotted it I took enough photos to write a whole post about it… but then I felt weird writing an entire piece about one specific headstone. I still don’t even know what I’m really looking at. It has a little bit of everything on it…

girl in blue, killed by a train, headstone, josephine klimczak

▴ The Girl in Blue

Willoughby Village Cemetery. Willoughby, OH
The Girl in Blue was the very first headstone I ever shared on The Dainty Squid. I remember it being such a huge deal to be blogging about a cemetery. I didn’t know how people would react or if I’d lose my readership because everyone just thought I was a giant weirdo. The post was surprisingly well received and I still catch these photos floating around the internet. Read more about her here.

▴ Corrina Shively

Brown Pet Cemetery. Columbus, OH
Brown Pet Cemetery still remains the only cemetery that has made me cry. It’s filled with incredible memorials. I just think it’s so touching that in a time when photography wasn’t as accessible as it is today that someone got glamour portraits of their kitten done. Check out more photos from my visit here.

▴ Seldom Seen Slim

Ballarat Cemetery. Ballarat, CA (a ghost town!)
“Me lonely? Hell, no! I’m half coyote and half wild burro!” That has to be one of the most interesting epitaphs out there!

▴ Unknown man died eating library paste

Goldfield Pioneer Cemetery. Goldfield, NV
Of course this makes the list! I mean, c’mon! The story of this one is that a homeless man was wondering the streets, looking for something to eat. In the library’s trash he found some book paste which at the time was a mixture of flour, water, and alum. Large quantities of alum are toxic when consumed, especially on an empty stomach. You can find more photos of the unique headstones in this cemetery here.

▴ Home for the Friendless

Erie Cemetery. Erie, PA
The Home for the Friendless was a home for orphaned or unwanted children in Erie, PA. (It was later renamed the Sarah Reed Children’s Home, thankfully.) I’m a bit more immune these days to the not so PC names certain institutions used to have but I’ll never forgot the complete shock I felt when I stumbled upon this one for the first time.

lilly e gray, salt lake city cemetery

▴ Victim of the Beast 666

Salt Lake City Cemetery. Salt Lake City, UT
If you’re having trouble reading the above headstone, it reads ‘Lilly E. Gray June 6, 1881 – Nov. 14, 1958 victim of the beast 666’ There are lots of interpretations that seem to just be made up by folks looking to write a good story but no one really knows for sure why her headstone says this as the only information on her death, straight from her obituarty, reads that she died of natural causes.

Laurel Grove Cemetery. Savannah, GA

Other notable spots;

  • Rehoboth Mission Cemetery. So much character packed in one small cemetery!
  • Old Sheldon Church Ruins. Cemetery, Spanish moss + ruins!
  • Tonopah Cemetery. Next to a clown motel, need I say more?
  • Wayne County Home Cemetery. No names, just numbers.

Mound View Cemetery. Mount Vernon, OH

Professor’s Halloween costume

by Kaylah Stroup November 1, 2017

You guys, above might be the absolute best photo I have ever taken of Professor. I regularly take ridiculous photos of him (See here!) buuut that one takes the cake, in my humble opinion. I was already cracking up about the shots I was getting of him in this little get up but then he stood up on this back legs and I lost my mind.

I was at Marshalls, looking for Klaus a jacket so we could keep enjoying walks around our lovely neighborhood even when the weather turns, when I spotted this tiny sweater with an attached bowtie. I had been stressing out about what I was going to post Halloween week here on the blog. As much as I love the holiday, we don’t really do too much to celebrate other than hit up a haunted house. Still, I wanted something fun for the blog. I figured a photo or two of Professor dressed up as a little businessman was better than nothing.

To be fair, while I purchased this silly sweater with Halloween in mind, he’ll probably wear it anytime I need a laugh. Although he acted like it weighed a thousand pounds when I first put it on toward the end of our little photoshoot he had gotten used to it.

$7.99 well spent, am I right?!

Did you dress your pets up for Halloween? PLEASE, leave me a link to photos if so! I would absolutely love to see.

what we wore : no bones about it redux

by Kaylah Stroup October 31, 2017

skeleton dog costume, green hair, skeleton leggings

details
hoodie – Target (little boys section, last year)
sunglasses – Claudia via Foster Grant
leggings – skeleton leggings via Hot Topic (on clearance now!)
shoes – saddle shoes via Amazon
Klaus’ outfit – Target (two years ago)

First and foremost,

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Klaus and I actually did this same thing two years ago. (Here!) Buuut I love that post so much I wanted to do it again. Even though he’s worn this little costume almost to smithereens, it still makes me smile every time I see him in it. I was even hoping Target would be carrying them again this year so I could buy a replacement. Alas, no luck there.

Lots of things have changed since that first post, most noticeably my hair length! In the time since I also managed to get my hands on a skeleton sweatshirt that fits really nicely which is kind of a huge deal! Don’t mind if I do, Target’s little boys section! We’re still the same cool bony buds though.

project 365 : days 295 – 301

by Kaylah Stroup October 30, 2017

295 : 365 Kitties, and a most appropriate shirt.

296 : 365 Lurking around an old cemetery with my dude on a rainy day.

297 : 365 One of my largest plants. Sadly, I think this guy is on his way out. It was thriving in my last apartment where it was able to live outside but these days it just doesn’t seem to get enough light. I really appreciate Professor’s grumpy cameo.

298 : 365 Will I ever stop obsessing over these rainbows? I think not.

299 : 365 My little sun kittens. You guys, all of a sudden, my two babies are becoming close than ever. I’ve never actually caught them cuddling with each other but they have been sitting together a lot which is a new thing. This is so exciting!!!

300 : 365 My other life, at the flower shop.

301 : 365 It’s been raining for like a week straight. I can’t decide if I hate it or love it. I did finally go out and get a cute photo with an umbrella which is something I’ve been meaning to do for like ever so that’s cool! Also, this sweater is the bee’s knees!

Hope your week is off to a great start! Happy Monday!

getting spooky with BarkBox

by Kaylah Stroup October 30, 2017
This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of BarkBox. All opinions are 100% mine.

Back in April Klaus got a chance to try out BarkBox for the first time. He was in loooove. (Check out the first post here!) He’s always been super into toys, unlike the cats, so it’s really fun to buy him presents. Needless to say, I was stoked for another opportunity to work together. Klaus even dressed up for the occasion.

In case you’re not familiar, let’s do a quick run down of what BarkBox is and what they offer; BarkBox is a monthly subscription box for dogs of all sizes (boxes are tailored to your pup’s size!) Each box comes with two bags of treats, one chew, and two toys. The best part, in my opinion, is that everything is tied together with a theme. All treats are always wheat, corn, and soy free. BarkBox is billed monthly, and decreases in price if you commit to 6 or 12 month plan. You also have the option to join the Extra Toy Club (an upgrade so you get three toys instead of the standard two!) for an additional $9 per month. The first box ships right away and subsequent boxes ship on the 15th of each month. They also have the really rad guarantee that if your dog doesn’t like something from the box, they’ll send you something they’ll love for free!

I’m going to be real with you here for a second, I was a little disappointed when I first opened the box and didn’t see any pumpkins or skulls. That’s really what I was excepting from a Halloween box, ya know? Then I thought about it a second and realized, HOLY COW, this theme is a thousand times better. Making toys based on items dogs are afraid of is so clever. Anyone can throw together a box of treats and toys to ship to you each month but BarkBox really really goes the extra mile with their ideas. It’s just so thought out! They’re not just giving you a theme, it’s a story!

If you sign up in October, you’ll receive the ‘Household Horror’ box, similar to the one shown here! In our box was ‘rain of terror‘ which is a cloud that housed two rain drop toys inside. (I love toys inside of toys! It’s basically a three for one. Multi-part toys are fairly common in Barkboxes.) As well as a firecracker, and a tombstone toy. Klaus is terrified of both fireworks and thunderstorms in real life but when they’re cute and have squeakers inside he couldn’t l0ve them more. That pile of toys he’s sitting in in the photo below? He gathered those all himself. I melllllllt!

We seriously couldn’t love BarkBox more in this house. Jeff loves opening the box with Klaus. Klaus obviously loves getting presents. The cats enjoy trying to steal treats, and I just love watching it all go down. I’m a huge fan of BarkBox, and how much love they put into each box, I think you will be too! So, bury the bone and the hatchet with the mailman by getting a BarkBox, they’re running a pretty rad limited time offer that ends 11/2!

#FreshWithYourPet

by Kaylah Stroup October 25, 2017

Thank you Freshpet for sponsoring this post. Check out Freshpet refrigerated pet food, made with fresh, all natural ingredients and no artificial preservatives, truly making a difference you can see and your pet will feel!

At the beginning of the month I shared how we’d be trying out the #FreshWithYourPet meal plan. (Read here) Freshpet, makers of really amazing pet food, teamed up with HelloFresh, a meal kit delivery service, to see if they could change your perception of how easy it is to cook delicious and easy meals at home as well as bring the same benfits of a fresh and well-balanced diet to your pet. To say that we were impressed would be an understatement.

Freshpet is real, all natural pet food, fresh from the fridge.  They never use pre-processed meat powders, ‘chicken meals’, or by-products nor do they add any additives or preservatives.

As I mentioned in the first post, it smells amazing. Klaus was even more excited than normal about eating. At the risk of being gross, I honestly think one of the biggest differences since making the switch is in his poop. Hear me out here. He’s going SO much less because what he’s consuming isn’t just a bunch of filler his body can’t do anything with. This is real food! (It resembles actual food too, as opposed to being weird dry pellets.)

I felt a bit guilty feeding just Klaus Freshpet since I had seen they also make a cat food. Midmonth I picked Squid and Professor up a bag to see how they’d like it. They were just as stoked as Klaus about it. It feels really good to feed my babies something that’s actually real, something I’m not grossed out by.

Do your cats do this too? Slam their little bodies into food and water when you try to give it to them. Can’t tell you how many times Squid has had her water dish spilled on her accidentally because she decided to push herself into it as I was kneeling down.

Same thing on the HellloFresh front, nothing but great things to say! One of the most enjoyable things for me was to be pushed out of my food comfort zone. I think a great example of this would be spagetti. That was already one of the meals we regularly make so I was little skeptical to see a recipe that called for zuchinni and soy sauce to be added. Had I simply been reading that recipe on the internet, I would have definitely left those two things out. Since it was already right in front of me, we made it exactly as it was written. It was DELICIOUS! HelloFresh definitely helped us out of the rut of making the same three or four meals on repeat.

Jeff and I cooked more consistently in the month of October than we ever have. Having the food already measured out, and waiting for us in the fridge was so so so awesome. Even on nights where cooking was the last thing either of us wanted to do, we ended up being SO happy after we “had to” cook. It was a great push to get into the kitchen instead of just ordering out. We actually liked HelloFresh so much that we’re highly considering continuing our subscription after returning from vacation.

So, yeah, seriously, no complaints here! This has honestly been one of the most enjoyable campaigns I’ve ever worked on. It feels really great to know I’m feeding my animals well thanks to Freshpet, and HelloFresh has been… wait for it… life-changing. It sounds dramatic but as a couple that always kind of struggled with finding the time and motivation to cook, HelloFresh has made it easy!

what I wore : pink, black + green

by Kaylah Stroup October 24, 2017

kaylah doolan, fashion blog, cleveland, blogger, ohio, green hair kaylah doolan, ohio fashion blog, green hair kaylah doolan, green hair, pink jean jacket, ohio, cleveland blog knit shoes

details
glasses – Ludlow c/o Alice & Olivia
jean jacket – Target (similar)
shirt – kyla top c/o Moorea Seal
lapel pins – feminist cat pin +moon pin
skirt – skater skirt via Amazon (cheap + tons of colors!)
socks – Target
shoes – c/o Zenzee

I am SO stinking excited that it’s finally jacket weather. I mean, who isn’t!? Don’t answer if it’s you. I’ve had both this shirt and jacket for quite a few months now but rarely worn either. Any time I’d go to add either to an outfit there was just something that ended up working better. Paired together though, I can not think of a more perfect combo! I’ve seen comic panels where a sweaty character is asked why they don’t take off their coat and their response is that it makes the outfit. Now, I totally get it. I even snapped a few photos without the jean jacket but opted not to share them because all these pieces work so well together. On a totally different subject, y’all, my haaaair! Yesterday, in my project 365 post, I mentioned feeling a bit disconnected from my long hair. Like, I’ll look in the mirror and feel like “Woah! Where did this come from!?” I guess it’s from years and years of having short hair. I tried for so many years to grow it but always ended up getting it cut on a whim. Literally, this might be the longest hair I’ve ever had! It may have been a similar length when I was like five but not since then. I definitely struggle with finding the motivation to style it every day but can I tell you something? I feel so dang pretty when I actually take the time to do something other than throw it all up in a bun. I know some day I’ll end up cutting it, and heading back to short hair but right now I can’t even imagine. I feel like the most magical cartoon princess with this hair. I dig it, big time.

project 365 : days 288 – 294

by Kaylah Stroup October 23, 2017

288 : 365 A smiley goob in a cute sweater. Check the full outfit post here.

289 : 365 Pressed fall memories.

290 : 365 Professor and I had a little photoshoot. I’ll save the best for the week of Halloween but for now, here’s a little something to hold you over.

291 : 365 You guys, I can’t tell you how many years I’ve been trying to grow my hair out only to end up cutting it. I’m so incredibly proud of the length it is now. Sometimes I look in the mirror and I’m just shocked how long it’s gotten. I love it so so so much but also somehow feel a little bit disconnected from it, like it’s not actually mine? I don’t know how to explain the feeling. Guess it’s just from having short hair for SO many years. Anyway, I’m way into my hair these days. Also, way into this photo. It’s totally cool for me to make this the main photo on all my social media even though I have my eyes closed, right? Heh.

292 : 365 Got an LED light strip (under 10 bucks right now!) for behind my computer and couldn’t be more tickled about it. I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it again, I can’t believe what a huge difference lighting makes in how cozy your home feels. Read more about the fun lighting I have around the house here.

293 : 365 Some photos I shot for Love, Anji. Putting together those small arrangements on the left is one of my favorite things to do. They’re like the perfect size for on your desk, at least that’s where I always picture people putting them in my head.

The shop has changed so much since I last blogged about it. (Literally so much my old post isn’t even worth linking to!) I really need to share some updated photos of the store. It’s a must visit if you’re coming through Cleveland.

294 : 365 Jeff and I picked up my nephew and headed to my parents to watch the meteor shower on Saturday night. We played with roman candles, sat by the fire and slept in hammocks. It was pretty fun. Ya know, other than Jeff’s hammock, which was above mine, slipping down a few inches in the middle of the night. Sooo he literally just slept right on top of me all night. The big butt claims that he thought I must have been fine since I didn’t make any noise. I was squiiiiished. I woke up sore since I wasn’t able to move much but I see the humor now that I’ve had a good nights sleep. Hehe!

I have such a busy week ahead of me that I am so ready to get started on already. Getting over this hurdle just means I’ll be one week closer to our roadtrip thats coming up at the beginning of the month. I can’t wait. I guess staying busy is the best way to make time fly, right?! Hope your week is off to a great start!
xoxo
