Y’all, the weather has taken a turn here in Ohio! Not that that is anything out of the ordinary since the weather in Northeast Ohio is notoriously crazy but what I really mean is that fall has hit! Wahoo!! I’ve been enjoying days filled with hot chocolate, hoodies, and empty beaches. It’s pretty incredible how quickly it changed, but I’m certainly not complaining. It’s my favorite time of the year and this is kind of my favorite outfit. I’ve worn it just over a handful of times already since the weather has changed. The best thing about it is that I actually have multiple pairs of overalls and tons of striped shirts so I can basically wear a clean version of this same outfit all the time. Haha.
On another note, can we just take a second to talk about how small the pockets in ladies jeans are?! What am I even supposed to put in there? I actually had a bunch of quarters in my pocket (for laundry, I don’t normally just carry around a tiny pocket full of quarters, promise!) and I lost some because those pockets are so darn useless. I saw a thing the other day making fun of how girls always respond to the compliment “nice dress!” with “It has pockets!” But dang man, if womens pants had pockets that held anything we wouldn’t be so pumped about dresses that have actual useful pockets! Kind of a strange thing to rant about I guess, but it’s silly that I can’t even fit my keys in any of my pants pockets.
Hope you have a most fabulous Wednesday!

abandoned Rochester subway

by Kaylah Stroup September 16, 2014

Last week Jeff, Jason, and I took a quick day trip up to Rochester, NY. It was my first time in the city, and let me tell you, we had a blast. The main destination we planned on visiting was the abandoned subway tunnel. The Rochester subway was a light rail rapid transit line that operated from 1927 to 1956. The Subway was constructed in the bed of the old Erie Canal. Most of the tracks have since been removed but it’s a really incredible tunnel nonetheless. We ventured into the West side of the tunnel first. Despite having a flashlight, and being told numerous times it was the darkest dark I’ll ever set foot in, I wasn’t prepared. There are basically three things I don’t like in the world; birds, authority, and the dark. I was sweating bullets. I don’t even know what I was afraid of but I was tense.

As we got further into the tunnel we approached the main part of it, where all the beautiful graffiti is. We peeked around a pillar to find we were less than fifteen feet away from a construction worker. We darted back into the darkness and I silently cursed under my breath about having to walk the mile back through the dark.

We took some awesome group shots with light painting in the darkest part of the tunnel before venturing out to snoop around the city. We passed some time exploring other places until it was late enough that we thought the workers would be gone. Eventually we made our way back, this time coming in another entrance directly into the graffiti (and light!!) filled area. It was GORGEOUS. There was just so much color.  We wandered around taking photos. After about twenty minutes I heard a weird noise, saw purple lights on the wall, and just about peed my pants. I had no idea what it was but we all dashed into the darkness and hid until it went past. Minutes later we figured out it was just some guy on his motorcycle, he drove it down to take photos of it. Hah! If he only knew how much he frightened me.

As soon as the sun set, the tunnel seemed to come alive. Not with homeless people as one might suspect, but with young people hanging out. I couldn’t believe this place we were sneaking around and trying to be so very stealthy in was crawling with so many people. Kids drinking, smoking pot, taking photos, being SO incredibly loud. Seems like it’s quite the hot spot. I can’t fault them though, if this were in my city I’d mostly be there quite often as well. It’s a beautiful spot.

There are talks of the city turning the tunnel into a walkway with gift shops and a museum but only time will tell if something like that will ever pan out. It would cost a lot of money up front but it does sound pretty great once you learn that it costs the city $1.2 million in repairs per year just to keep it in this condition!

Rochester, you’re a real cool city.

Zoetic Walls + a 30 mile ride

by Kaylah Stroup September 10, 2014
Last week I took a nice long bike ride, and I mean looong. 30 miles! I don’t know about you, but I think that’s pretty darn impressive, especially for someone who less than six months ago hadn’t ridden more than a mile ever. That’s my longest ride to date, and put me over the 400 mile mark for my total miles.

I biked from the West side of Cleveland, all the way to the far East side. I had seen a photo of a mural on instagram that I really wanted to get a picture of my bike in front of. Upon further investigation I found that the area that mural was in was rich with bunches of other murals. They’re actually called the Zoetic Walls and street artists from all around the world have come to help make our city look spiffy. It was really fun biking around the area looking for the murals. I obviously had to take a picture of my bike in front of all of my favorites.

Not a mural but here’s a wiener dog riding my bike. We stopped at Sandy’s Frozen Whip for a treat. This place, claiming to be “the feast in the east”, did not disappoint. I got a hot fudge sundae, which you basically can’t go wrong with. Jeff got a pineapple shake which was probably the best milkshake I’ve ever tasted! I’m looking forward to going back. Cleveland has SO many awesome ice cream spots!

We broke up the long journey home by stopping to shoot some photos on the pedestrian bridge over the highway. I don’t think I’ve ever actually been on one before. It was craaazy to feel the bridge shake when large trucks went underneath. You can actually see a squiggle in the light trails where a truck when by while the shutter was open, either that or someone hit a big pot hole! Haha.

30 mile bike rides aren’t something that will be possible all the time but here’s to hoping to do a few more before winter.

abandoned factory

by Kaylah Stroup September 8, 2014
Recently we explored an abandoned factory. This Cleveland subsidiary of two larger companies was formed in 1968. By 1980 it was one of the largest machine-tool manufacturers in the United States. Three short years passed before the company began to suffer due to Japanese competition, the recession, and corporate inefficiencies. They restructured, cut the workforce in half and continued to have lots of ups and downs for the remainder of its years. Eventually in 2002 the factory was completely abandoned after a few years of only a portion of the building being utilized.

What these photos aren’t showing you is all the trash in the building. Actually, you can kind of see it off in the distance in the reflection photo! The majority of these photos were taken on the outside edges of the building, as well as on the second floor. In the middle of this place, on the bottom floor, it’s just all trash. Trash piled higher than your head. More trash than I’ve ever seen anywhere other than a dump. Surprisingly it didn’t really smell all that bad. Although I imagine on a hot summer day it would be intolerable.

bedroom tour

by Kaylah Stroup September 4, 2014
My bedroom always seems to be the last room I put together. I don’t know why. I wouldn’t even consider this 100% done, although I never consider any room “done”. I enjoy constantly moving things around and changing it up often, as if you couldn’t tell by hair color. Hah. Anyway, my bedroom is finally at a point that I’m pretty happy with, and any changes from here will probably be small ones. So without further ado, I present to you my bedroom (and a whole bunch of pictures of Klaus because there’s no kicking that cutie out of bed!)

It’s a fairly small room but it’s easily the favorite room I’ve ever called “my bedroom”. I have two large windows opposite my bed from which on a clear night I can see the moon perfectly while in bed. It’s pretty incredible, and high up there on things I love most about this apartment.

Abandoned Observatory

by Kaylah Stroup September 3, 2014
The observatory is another building that was on my radar long before I moved to Cleveland. I actually ended up there once by accident when I got lost on my way back from Cleveland. Sometimes the MapQuest app gets me allllll mixed around, and that was one of the times it actually turned out okay. I parked my car, got out and snapped a few photos. Once again, never thought that some day I’d be inside of it with my best friends (check out our super cute group shot here!)

The observatory is probably one of the coolest buildings in Cleveland, in my opinion. Its size is deceiving from the outside. It doesn’t look that large but once inside you realize, it’s quite large and it’s a maze!

In the 1950s Cleveland’s light pollution began to make research impossible from this location. Eventually the building was sold in 1983, abandoned, and remained neglected until 2005 when a couple who planned on turning it into their residence bought the property for a mere 115k. Those plans were soon thwarted when the new owner was convicted of mortgage fraud. Since then the building has just been sitting and rotting.

what I wore : polka dots + puppies!

by Kaylah Stroup September 2, 2014
details
cardigan – Charter School Cardigan c/o Modcloth
crop top – Charlotte Russe
skirt – See You Round Skirt c/o Modcloth
(no longer available, here’s a similar one.)
boots – Forever 21 (last year)
pins – Good Vibes Only via Pintrill, Explorer via Explorer’s Press
I cleaned out my closet last week. It was over stuffed and a lot of the things inside of it hadn’t been touched since I moved in. I packed a box full of things to take to the thrift store, a laundry basket full of things to possibly include in a sale (you interested?), and found a whole bunch of things I had completely forgotten about. This skirt was in the “maybe” pile until I tried it on and fell back in love. It’s a great length, it’s comfortable and best of all, it doesn’t need ironed before I wear it. Is it lazy of me to admit that was actually one of the requirements the things I kept had to meet, that I didn’t need to iron them before wearing them? It’s not necessarily that I mind ironing things before I wear them, it’s that I don’t like things getting wrinkly while I wear them.
The dogs were all about invading my photos. Crum is actually just in love with me. That dog seriously never leaves my side when I visit my parents. No matter where I go, he follows. I was sitting on a rock in the pond while my nephew looked for cool rocks. Who was by my side? Crum, just standing in the water. That dog is too sweet. Although getting slobber all over my sweater isn’t something I really appreciate, he sure does have a massive tongue!

xoxo

PS. You can see this skirt styled another way here from 2013.

a home full of curiosities

by Kaylah Stroup August 28, 2014
Shortly after I first moved into my apartment I shared some photos of my curiosity cabinets. Six months have passed since then and of course, my collection has grown. My dining room, which lacks a table but houses my collection as well as Klaus’ crate, is pretty darn awesome if you ask me. Since it’s changed quite a bit since my first photos of it I thought it would be fun to share some updated photos. (Same with my living room, I’ll be photographing that again soon since it’s evolved since first sharing photos!)

A super quick Q+A of things that always get asked:
Where do you get all those things? Here and there! Estate sales, ebay, the trash (seriously…), and sometimes folks are even nice enough to send me things that would fit in my collection perfectly. Yes, I am totally interested in any dentures, or teeth you may find!
Did you kill all those butterflies? No way. I found all of them dead on the beach a few years back. Monarch butterflies migrate and sometimes they just don’t make it. No idea what caused so many to die there that day but there were tons.
Do you clean your own skulls? I do.
What is in that jar? The jar in the second photos has Professor’s testicles. I simply asked the vet when he was neutered if I could keep them. She happily handed them to me after his surgery. I also have Klaus’.

Below is a mold of my teeth after braces. I asked the orthodontist if I could get the original mold of my crooked teeth that they took right before I got my braces put on. He said he wasn’t sure but would try. At my next appointment he excitedly told me he had the mold for me, I looked and it was of my new straight teeth. I’m still a little bummed I don’t have a mold of my super crooked teeth but I guess having any mold of my teeth, straight or not is pretty cool. I also got to keep my braces, which you can see two pictures up.

I also have a handful of strange things that could definitely fit in this room scattered around the apartment. There is a shelf full of medical models in my bedroom that I’ll tell you more about as soon as I get that room photographed for a little tour.

My apartment is pretty darn cute!

abandoned auto parts + apartments

by Kaylah Stroup August 27, 2014
One of many buildings we explored on our grand adventure day was formerly an auto parts store on the lower level with apartments upstairs. We’ve actually all been itching to hit small buildings as opposed to the big factory buildings. Factories are interesting, but normally they’re pretty gutted. Scrappers have stolen anything and everything worth money, equipment is gone, and they’re just big empty buildings. Small buildings are normally less ravaged in that sense. They have more things left in them, including personal items that help tell a story about the building’s former life.

This place was FULL of stuff. The only other thing I had seen like it was at the Salton Sea. The floor was absolutely covered in the downstairs. You couldn’t see the actual flooring at all. There were tons of stuffed animals, clothes, boxes, as well as miscellaneous papers. Surprisingly, it somehow didn’t smell.

xoxo

Ps. Did you spot the GIF?
