a few of my favorite face masks – part 2

by Kaylah Stroup December 26, 2018

Back in January of this year, I shared a post featuring a few of my favorite face masks. Check that out here. Doing masks together is still one of my mine and Jeff’s favorite little rituals. It’s relaxing and with the dry winter air, our faces need all the extra love they can get.

A few more of my favorite face masks, in no particular order…

▴ Palate Polish Bio Cellulose Kombucha Sheet Mask. This is, without a doubt, the best sheet mask I have ever used. First of all, it actually stuck to my face! Sure, most sheet masks stay relative well but they always have weird gaps around your nose and don’t really stay on around your jaw but just take a look at this bad boy below! It’s actually stuck on my face!

Once removed, the mask left my face so incredibly soft, smooth, and glowy. I have never experienced results so dramatic as I did with this. If you were looking for a mask to do before a special event – this is it! Need even more reasons to buy? The mask is compostable, vegan, never tested on animals and from a woman run company!

Palate Polish sheet mask

▴ L’Oréal Paris Pure Sugar Scrub. First things first, this isn’t a mask. As the name states, it’s a scrub. Since it’s something special I don’t use every single day, I’m going to go ahead and group it in with masks.

At just around five dollars, this is the cheapest product on this list but don’t let that fool you. It’s incredible. The container is fairly small but after five uses I still have over half left. I will definitely be repurchasing once I run out. It makes my face feel smooth and refreshed. Its what I reach for when my face is feeling rough and dull from the dry winter air. It also smells very very tasty and washed off easily!

If you have dry lips, this scrub can also be used on your lips! When I use it I actually just massage my whole face, including my lips with it.

▴ Charcoal Peel-Off Mask. Not even going to play it cool, this is my favorite mask ever! I’d been on the hunt for a really nice peel off mask like this for a while. They were really popular there for a minute and that lead to a lot of them being on the market – which also meant there were a lot that maybe weren’t that great. Searching through reviews was daunting. It seemed like half the reviews were fake (super positive) and the others were complaining that their faces were basically being ripped off when they removed the mask.

ANYWAY, I decided to just take a chance and try this one out. My first time using it the results were incredible. When I peeled off the mask it had blackheads and tons of dead skin attached. I couldn’t believe it. I sent pictures to Jeff immediately! Of course, each time after that it’s had less and less but I’m obviously going to take that as a good sign.

I don’t apply this mask to my whole face just my chin, nose and forehead. It definitely does a great job pulling off anything that shouldn’t be there but still, it doesn’t hurt to remove. My one word of advice is to use this mask after a hot shower since your pores will be open.

charcoal peel off maskcharcoal peel off mask

Pretty gross, huh? I’m including it though because that’s exactly the kind of photo that sells me on a face mask.

▴ Aztec Secret Clay Mask. This was probably the number one mask people recommended to me after my first post on face masks. It’s one of the most popular masks out there right now, and with good reason! It leaves my face feeling clean, and smooth although I definitely wouldn’t use this in the morning since it leaves my face red for a little bit.

My one complaint about this is just what a bother it is to rinse off. It’s no harder than any other clay mask I’ve ever tried but masks like this always take a bit more elbow work to remove. I’ve become a big big fan of peel off and sheet masks lately for this exact reason.

The good news is, this mask is perfect for spot treating. If you have a zit that you feel might make an appearance in the next few days, this mask will basically stop it in its tracks.

▴ Freeman Sweet Tea and Lemon Peel-Off Mask. I’m a big fan of all of the masks I’ve tried from Freeman so far. (This is my third. Read about the first two in this post.) As I mentioned above, I really love peel off masks. This one is definitely a bit more gentle than the charcoal one I raved about earlier in the post. It doesn’t get as many blackheads out and is much easier to remove. That being said because it is more gentle, I apply it to my whole face instead of just problem areas like my chin. It leaves my skin feeling so soft!

what I wore – overalls, always

by Kaylah Stroup December 5, 2018

Teenage Kaylah definitely would have scoffed at my short pants. Admittedly, they’re a little short, at least for this time of the year, but I LOVE these overalls. These are my seventh or eighth pair so I guess you could say I’m a bit of an overall aficionado. I’ve learned things I really like and dislike in a pair of overalls and these have all the things I like and none of my dislikes. In case you’re curious, my number one dislike in a pair of overalls is when the straps in the back go all the way down to the waist instead of connecting to a larger piece midback. The straps fall down constantly! I probably won’t get too much more wear from these outside of the house until the warmer weather makes a return though. I’m looking forward to wearing these, cuffed a bit shorter, all spring and summer long paired with my favorite sandals. It’s a perfect look. I was already trying on summer outfit ideas in the mirror because I am soooo ready.

The sizing options on these overalls nearly scared me away since they come in small, medium, large or extra large and for a pair of pants, I feel like that’s super vague. I suppose I buy pjs in sizes like that but I’m a heck of a lot more picky about how jeans fit than jammies. Since Amazon has super easy & free returns I just went for it. I really wanted a second pair of black overalls, okay? I chose large. I’m very happy with how they fit. If I were going for a tighter fit, I definitely could have pulled off a medium but I actually was looking for a pair with a more relaxed fit. They’re roomy throughout the legs without looking oversized. The waist even has enough room to fit a bulky sweater without looking stuffed. I’m around five foot seven inches with a long torso and these fit perfectly lengthwise in my torso. Always an issue with overalls!!! The only real questionable thing is the length, which I already mentioned makes them a bit more suited for warm weather. Based on review photos though, if you’re shorter they’ll most likely be perfect on ya!

Not so fun little tidbit about these photos, I re-twisted my ankle while taking them hence why there are so many of me sitting (which actually became my favorite shots!) I briefly mentioned it previously but I sprained my ankle back in the middle of October. It swelled up to the size of softball almost immediately and gave me the gnarliest bruise I’ve ever had. It wasn’t getting better quick enough for me so I ended up going to urgent care where I got X-rays and was told it was just a sprain, no big deal. What I didn’t realize about sprained ankles is that they apparently take five hundred years to heal and my ankle would be as fragile as glass even when it felt okay.

The day I went out to take these photos I was being careful. I knew I had to watch my step. Shortly after getting to the beach though, I put my foot down wrong when stepping off of a piece of driftwood and in slow motion, I felt it roll. Gosh, it was such an awful feeling, even worse than the original injury. I stayed long enough to get the rest of my photos and immediately went home where I spent the rest of my day on the couch with an ice pack.

It’s been a real rollercoaster healing this dang thing. Some days I definitely feel like I’m on the mend and then two days later it’ll be causing me lots of pain. Fingers crossed it starts to make progress quickly. I really want to get at least one last bike ride in before the end of the year.

what I wore : beachcombing

by Kaylah Stroup November 26, 2018

the dainty squid - what I wore beachcombingpink camera bag lake erie beach glass

It’s been a busy few days with Thanksgiving last week. Jeff had off Thursday, Friday, and of course, the weekend so we essentially had a four day weekend. Lots of food, and time spent with family and friends. It was lovely. I also managed to convince him to go to the beach with me twice(!!) – which makes it sound like he doesn’t have any fun but I think he might even enjoy looking for treasure more than I do. When I asked him to take a few photos of me he kept getting distracted by fresh finds the lake was washing in. At least I can pull myself away for a few seconds…

Beachcombing is one of my absolute favorite hobbies. I’m so happy my husband seems to be really getting into it as well. It’s a blast to share that with someone, especially someone who is just as hyped about the cool things I find as I am. It definitely takes a special kind of person to agree that finding a tiny shard of pottery with only the teensiest bit of color on it is cool.

After we throughly comb the sand, our routine has been to come home and spread out our finds on the kitchen table. It’s the best. I treasure our treasure hunting time together. I’m quite sad that we’ve fallen into this little pattern just as the weather is starting to change though. While you can definitely hunt for beach treasures all year long – I’ve certainly found great glass in the dead of winter – it’s a heck of a lot less enjoyable in the cold. Hopefully the coming year will hold lots of nice weather, treasure hunts… maybe even a metal detector and youtube channel? Who knows!

A few recent favorite finds. The green piece above is probably my all time best find. It’s such an incredible piece of beach glass. Perfectly worn down, big, and that color!?! Gah! So good. And below, my very first piece of jewelry found on the beach. Nothing special but there is definitely a thrill to sifting through the pebbles and seeing a ring hiding out.

nail art idea – the scotch tape method

by Kaylah Stroup November 1, 2018

easy triangle nail tutorial, nail tutorial

These last few weeks I’ve been experimenting with using scotch tape as a way to decorate my nails again. I first started doing this five or so years ago and even wrote a post with some tips. Playing around with this method again has me feeling all inspired! I thought it might be fun to update that old post with new tips and share a few photos of recent designs.

Sounds totally tacky to be doing your nails with scotch tape but the results are way cool and it’s super easy. Even better than that, it’s quick! In under twenty minutes you’ll have a manicure that looks like it took hours + a way steadier hand than anyone really has. As big of a fan as I am of taping off sections and stenciling in shapes, this is much easier.

How to…
Paint nail polish of your choosing on to scotch tape that is still attached to the roll. Once it’s thoroughly dry, cut the tape into whatever shape your heart desires, and apply to your nail. Seal it in with a top coat, and you’re all set!

SIMPLE. AS. THAT.

A few tips to get you started…
▴ Paint the tape before you paint your nails this way the tape has a chance to dry a little bit longer. If it’s still tacky when you try to cut it, you’re gonna make a mess.

▴ Make sure your nails are completely dry before applying the tape, or before cutting the tape for that matter. You wouldn’t want to smudge them.

▴ As long as everything is dry before you get started, the tape is easily removable if you decide halfway through your manicure you’re not in love with the direction you were heading. You can even reuse the pieces on a different nail. Be careful removing them though because the polish can flake off the tape.

▴ After you’ve decided on placement, be sure to press the tape down thoroughly. Air bubbles and corners not pressed down are basically a guarantee your manicure won’t last!

▴ Your top coat is the most important part of this process. If you don’t use one, the tape will almost immediately come off. My all-time favorite top coat has always been Seche Vite. It dries quickly and I have yet to have any issues with the tape peeling up from underneath it. Don’t be afraid to do a second coat if the corners of your tape pieces are sticking up a bit.

▴ Sometimes the small pieces of tape are really hard to place using just your fingers, try tweezers!

▴ Scissors without a straight edge, like these ones that cut different patterns, open you up to unlimited design options.

nail art inspiration nail inspiration

When you’re ready to remove it, the tape easily comes off with nail polish remover just like your polish.

If you have any questions, let me know! I’d love to see your nail creations if you decide to experiment with tape. Tag me on Instagram, @thedaintysquid.

tips for keeping your hair healthy, shiny & strong

by Kaylah Stroup October 24, 2018

Over the last eight or so years I’ve written many posts about hair. Most of which concentrate on dyeing your hair and maintaining that color. I’ve got a list of must-read hair posts down at the bottom of this one! Now that my hair is finally past shoulder length I feel like I putting more effort into keeping it healthy is essential. Here are a few of my favorite tips for keeping my locks shiny and strong…

▴ Wash your hair less. This is really hard for some folks, I totally get it. I used to wash my hair every single day. I love freshly washed hair but shampoos strip your hair of important natural oils. It took a while but I finally found a dry shampoo I loved and figured out how to use it correctly. I am now a member of the every other day hair washing club and my hair has never looked better. My color is lasting SO much longer.

▴ When you do wash your hair, use shampoo only from root to mid shaft. No sense in stripping your ends from the oils they so desperately need, especially since they’re the most prone to drying out.

▴ Use a special hair towel. A towel made specifically for your hair is a game changer. Not only will it get more water out helping your hair dry quicker, but it’ll also be much more gentle on your locks!

tips for keeping hair healthy and strong Kaylah Stroup hair

▴ Hair masks! Every few weeks I mix a bit of dye with my favorite hair mask and let it sit for a half hour or so. It’s a nice touch up of color with all the benefits your mask of choice adds. My reigning favorite is the Eva NYC therapy sessions hair mask. It smells wonderful and leaves my hair moisturized, shiny and looking downright beautiful!

Even if you’re not adding dye, masks are great for helping your hair look it’s best. Nothing will save super damaged hair but a good mask certainly make your locks look better.

▴ Heat protectant is essential if you’re using styling tools. The key here is to make sure you’re applying it to all of your hair, not just the top layer. I’m currently using CHI Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray. Not only does it protect my hair from heat, but it also helps seems to help my curls hold better.

▴ Speaking of hair products, Hask Placenta is amazing. I could write a whole post about how much of a wonder product this stuff is. It’s the only thing I’ve been consistently using since I started dyeing my hair. My number one must-have hair product! I spritz it on my damp hair before brushing. I let it sit a few minutes then comb through. It makes my hair so much more manageable. Hask Placenta isn’t sold as a ‘detangler’ but it’s certainly proven to be for my hair. I seem to always forget it when we go on vacations and I can definitely tell a difference on days I don’t use it.

▴ Satin Pillowcase! Gentle on your hair, cooler to the touch than a regular pillowcase and good for bedhead. Switching to a satin pillowcase meant no longer waking up with bangs sticking straight out in the morning.

It’s been a while since my last outfit post which means it’s totally cool if I proclaim this is my faaaavorite, right?! Yeah? Because it is! In the last few years, I’ve definitely found lots of pieces I love and wear over and over again but I don’t recall the last time I loved a whole outfit so fiercely. It’s like each piece was made to go with the others.

The jumper is… well, perfect. It’s long enough to not show butt (which is definitely an issue I have with every other jumper I’ve ever found and tried on) It also just fits really well throughout. The straps don’t fall down. Seriously – it’s perfect. I love it with this dog top but I’m also excited to pair it with a black and white striped top, of course.

The top isn’t as perfect but to be honest, I could tell that from the product photos. That print though, it was irresistible to me. I love animal prints. My issue with the fit is that it’s short and wide. I have a long torso so with regular jeans it just looks plain silly. Luckily, the top works well with overalls, this jumper, and all my skirts. So, I guess, as long as you’re going to tuck it in, you’re golden. Prepare yourself for the compliments! (“I was gonna compliment your hair but then I noticed your shirt! Oh my gosh!” – Starbucks barista)

In this outfit I feel fierce, adorable, like a real-life cartoon character, and 100% ready for fall! Bring on the pumpkin patches (…and the weather that stays cool for more than a day at a time!)

twenty-eight

TWENTY-EIGHT

Today I am twenty-eight years old. It’s… whatever. I don’t know. I’m trying not to stress about ‘getting old’, and I think I’m doing a decent job. I’m happy to be in good health. (I mean, I could do with fewer headaches…) Happy to be recently married, to be comfortable in my own skin, to have the cutest lil apartment in my favorite neighborhood, to have lots of travel plans coming up, et cetera. I’m also pretty darn jazzed to have an excuse to bug my friends to go on bike rides, and eat ice cream with me. Not that I ever need an excuse…

Just like last year, I’ll be doing my best to stay busy on my birthday. I used to like to lay around and just relax on my birthday but the older I get, the more I realize how much happier I am when I’m moving about. Hopefully by the time this post goes live I’ll have already grabbed coffee, hit the beach, and come home to get cleaned up. I spotted some estate sales that look ripe for the pickin’. Cross your fingers I find all the best treasures today.

The Dainty Squid birthday

Fun little side note about this dress, when I was checking out the cashier, a woman of similar age but of very different style, was like “Oh my gosh, I can just see you in this. You’re gonna look amazing!” It was basically the best thing ever. I’m pretty sure I left the store glowing. I really do love this dress and feel like it’s very flattering but honestly, no idea how much of it is just because she hyped me up so much. Either way, I love it – both the dress, and women building up other women! Can you do me a birthday favor? Give someone you see a genuine compliment.

7 things I tried in July

by Kaylah Stroup July 31, 2018

① Alba Botanica Pure Lavender Sunscreen. I go through a lot of sunscreen. Well, everyone should but I’m very visibly tattooed and try super hard to keep them protected from the sun all the time. I was standing in line at TJ Maxx when I spotted this sunscreen. I already have three or four random bottles of sunscreen around the house so normally this wouldn’t have caught my attention except the bottle was purple. Something about the shade of it, my brain knew before I even read it that it would be lavender. I love lavender! Needless to say, I bought it.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m more of a spray on sunscreen type of gal but I LOVE this stuff. It spreads easily and doesn’t leave a white coating on your skin. It basically just feels and applies like lotion. Obviously, smelling like lavender instead of regular old sunscreen scent is a highlight for me as well. I’m hooked.

② Face pot. This was an impulse buy that ended up being a really good purchase. I love planters with faces. Honestly, I just love any inanimate object with a face. It’s a fair price. Cheaper than I’d expect for what it is and where it’s from, honestly. That’s probably what really inspired the purchase. It was like ‘ahh, I can’t resist!’ Happy to report it’s just as cute in person as it is online.

③ IMAK Compression Pain Relief Mask. I frequently get headaches, and occasionally get migraines as well. I’ve owned a few eyes masks that were supposed to help but nothing that I ever used more than once. I started to think that, even though I really enjoy having something over my eyes when I have a headache, masks just weren’t my thing. Jeff bought me this one and I now realize I was just using the wrong masks.

It has a little bit of weight too it but not too much that it’s uncomfortable. Like many other eye masks marketed toward folks with headaches, you can pop it in the freezer. It doesn’t get intolerably cold or stiff, unlike others I’ve tired. I’ve used it a handful of times since I got it and each time it’s been a huge relief. It’s certainly not a miracle worker, it doesn’t get rid of migraines but it helps them be a bit easier to deal with.

A lot of times when I have a migraine or even a really bad headache, I have trouble falling asleep. I just toss and turn. Using this mask helped me do less of that. The weight on my face was comforting and completely blocking out light (something that I’m super sensitive to when my head hurts) was awesome. I highly recommend grabbing one!

④ Migrastil Migraine Stick. Another purchase by my thoughtful husband! It was a bad month for me and my head. I feel like I had a headache more days than I didn’t this month. This roll-on ‘migraine stick’ is just essential oils (peppermint, spearmint & lavender) that you’re supposed to rub on your temples, forehead, and the back of your neck. Once again, not a miracle worker but certainly something that helped! I especially enjoyed putting it on my temples and then putting on my face mask. It smells very relaxing and helped lull me to sleep more than once.

⑤ Ombre keyboard cover. Since discovering many years ago that I could put stickers or a cover on my keyboard to make it cute I have not had a blank keyboard for more than a week at a time. I mean, if you have the option to make something cute, why not?! For my birthday (and because I really needed one!) I bought a new iMac. I obviously needed a cover for my keyboard. I didn’t find any super colorful ones that I liked so I picked out this gray and black one. I love it way more than I thought I would. It fits perfectly, keeps my keys clean, and feels really nice to type on. Definitely recommend picking one up!

⑥ 10 pack of crystal ball pendants. To be fair, this isn’t a new purchase. I already owned two of them. When I saw this ten pack for essentially the same price I bought a set of two for, I had to grab them. I have a couple sitting in each window now. We have SO many rainbows! It’s the best. Such a mood booster!

For more pictures of the rainbows these produce, check out this post.

⑦ Kueshi Double Effect Make Up Remover. I received this makeup remover in my July Glossybox. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I don’t have a solid makeup removal technique. Sometimes I use water and a washcloth, other times just a face wipe but to be honest, I hate both of those methods. This came to me at a perfect time. I put a tiny amount on a cotton pad and it removes everything with a quick swipe. It’s not greasy and it doesn’t smell like anything. I dig it!

Did you try/buy anything awesome this last month?
xoxo

five tips for buying clothes on Amazon

by Kaylah Stroup July 16, 2018
This post contains affiliate links. For more information on what that means, read here.

tips for clothes shopping on amazon

bug shirt

I don’t think it comes as any surprise that I’m a huge fan of Amazon. I buy just about everything except groceries on there (and that’s only because I enjoy going to the grocery store!) In the last year or two I’ve become a really big fan of shopping for clothes on Amazon too. They have a ton of brands I already know and love, new ones to discover, and even some prime exclusive brands. Basically, they have something for EVERYONE no matter your style!

A few months ago I was posting a lot of outfit photos featuring great amazon finds on my Instagram page. That led to a handful of questions about how I find such rad clothing on such a massive site. I’m finally here to share some of my best tips for buying clothes on Amazon.

dress / shoes

Check out curated lists.

Amazon is REALLY good at recommending products. I first figured this out when they’d suggest books to me that were related to other books I happened to be looking at. More often than not, their recommendations would be spot on. They’re just as good in other categories too!

I suggest checking out their fashion page to start with, from there you can view their current lists. They have ones based around styles like boho, casual, classic, etc. They have even more lists showcasing trends like vintage dresses, statement bags, colorful denim, and more! It’s super helpful and can be a great jumping point to finding things you’ll love!

I’d say more often than not my Amazon finds happen from just clicking around rather than directly searching for a specific product. When I’m looking at something I even remotely like I always make sure to check out their recommended products at the bottom of the page.

Lots of bloggers have lists of their favorite products too if you’d rather go that route. I recently created a clothing based one, ‘dainty squid style‘, that features some of my favorite purchases as well as other clothing items I’m crushing on.

tassel slip ons

Read reviews.

This is so obvious, right? Actually take the time to read them though! I’ve found things that ended up working really well for me that actually had low star ratings. Sometimes people complain about things that might not matter to you (like fabric preference or if an item needs ironed before wearing) and it’d stink if you missed out because you didn’t give it a shot. You don’t have to read every word of every review but skimming a handful for information that is important to you (for me – dress length & roomy chest!) makes a huge difference.

Also, be wary of too many 5 star reviews. Nothing is perfect to everyone. Too many totally positive reviews may mean they’ve been paid to write a review.

On a related topic, make sure to leave reviews once you get your order! Write what you liked and didn’t like about a product specifically, instead of just writing things like ‘didn’t fit” or ‘i don’t like it’ Reviews help everyone and reviews with pictures are even better. You don’t have to be a fashion blogger, simple mirror shots are great and get the job done.

alien sweatshirt

alien sweatshirt

Check size charts.

If you’re unfamiliar with a brand, check the size chart! You should know already that a size medium isn’t the same in every single brand. This is especially relevant when buying online from a brand you don’t regularly wear. A quick check will ensure the best fit and that you’re not stuck with something that will barely fit a toddler.

Don’t be afraid to purchase + return.

A lot of items on Amazon are available for free returns when you have prime! (Seriously, get prime! So worth it!) Any reason at all, you get a full refund with no shipping charges, as long as it’s in new and unused condition. Just double check beside the price before you add an item to your cart, it should say ‘free returns’. I honestly really hate returning things but Amazon makes it so easy to do which in turn makes it easy to try things out I might otherwise pass on from other sites.

polka dot dress / striped dress

Utilize prime wardrobe!

Have you heard about prime wardrobe yet? You can pick three or more items across clothing, shoes, and accessories. They ship them to you, you have seven days to try them on, and then you send them back with the provided return label. You’re only charged for the items you decide to keep. It’s a super easy way to try things on without ever leaving the house. I think it’s especially awesome because trying on things at home gives you the opportunity to test out items with pieces you may already own.

dress / shoes (similar)

What’s your favorite item of clothing you’ve found on Amazon? I’m nuts about these leggings. They look like simple black leggings but they’re nice enough that I feel comfortable wearing them instead of jeans.
xoxo

PS. You can sign up for a 30 day free trial of Prime here. Highly, highly recommended. Makes getting things in the mail super quick and returning super easy plus you get the added bonus of watching all the weird documentaries they have streaming.
