Wayne County Home Cemetery

by Kaylah Stroup August 22, 2017

ohio, wooster, cemetery, graveyard, headstone with numbers

Wayne County Home Cemetery.

I’ve been itching to get back out and look for interesting new cemeteries to explore. Every time I think I’ve checked out everything interesting in the area I manage to dig up something new I hadn’t seen before. I don’t know how but I ended up searching on the FindAGrave app in the Wooster, OH area. It’s only a little over an hours drive away so not a bad drive if I were to find something cool.

As luck would have it, the area is cemetery central. SO many of them! I was mainly browsing for larger ones but using the list feature I managed to spot “Wayne County Home Cemetery” With only 324 burials, it wasn’t the numbers that excited me – it was the name. “Home” generally meaning the county home or infirmary. Most of the time the people who died in these places didn’t have family to claim their body or the means to provide for their own burial so the home would take care of that for them. The headstones in places like this are usually the bare minimum, no names just numbers. …And that was if you were lucky enough to get one. Unmarked graves certainly weren’t uncommon.

Despite doing fairly extensive research on cemeteries like this I still had yet to visit one. The majority of the nearby ones are actually looked after fairly well… at least by security so I was a bit nervous about making the drive to this one thinking that I might not be able to explore. As luck would have it, it’s actually in the middle of nowhere. I felt like I went down a million little roads lined with cornfields before I finally got there. It was worth the drive.

Wayne County Home Cemetery, headstone with just numbers ohio, cemetery, rows of headstones

I thought I had a pretty decent idea of the history of this cemetery. A really interesting story that I was excited to share because it added so much punch to the whole place. I do minimal research of the places I want to visit before hand just to save myself the let down of getting super excited and then not being able to check them out. I dig in after I get home. When I went to confirm and fact check my story for this place though… I came up completely empty handed.

I am so incredibly confused. I swear up and down I read on multiple sites the history of this cemetery. My searches come up with nothing now. I even went through my browser history… still nothing. My only guess is that I simply read about so many other cemeteries I confused one of their stories with this place.

So, I don’t have any back story for you on this cemetery, just that it was established in 1852, but I still think the photos alone are very powerful. There were only a two or three plots that had newer headstones with a name. (One of which was a child that died on my birthday. Spooky!) The rest were simple stones marked simply with a number. Only one of those was decorated.

project 365 : days 225 – 231

by Kaylah Stroup August 21, 2017

225: 365 Jeff and I went over to visit my parents and hang out for a while. After some convincing my mom let me pick some flowers from her garden to make a bouquet. Arranging whatever I can get my hands on is one of my favorite things in the world. I can’t wait to have space for a garden some day. I’m gonna grow alllllllll the dang flowers!!

226 : 365 Another estate sale find from last week. I haven’t been going to very many lately but one advertising tons of taxidermy was too much for me to resist. I didn’t manage to get my hands on what I really wanted (a squirrel!) but I did come home with these. They’re perfect for my living room and were the perfect push to finally get things hung on the last empty wall in that room.

More living room stuff! For my birthday my parents got me this really rad light. I had the perfect spot for it above a bookcase. Seriously, my living room went up about ten cool point this last week. It feels like it’s finally time for a full living room tour.

227 : 365 My internet was down (come to find out the line had apparently ripped out by a large vehicle that drove by!) so I decided to use my time wisely and go explore new cemeteries. I hit five new to me cemeteries all before noon. I took a handful of photos in each but only shot one for the blog. I’m very excited to share those photos later this week.

228 : 365  I shot some photos of my new Athleta goods, and ended up feeling inspired to write a big long post on body image. I finished it in one sitting, which isn’t normally something I do. I wanted to hit publish right away but felt a bit self conscious, as I always do with really personal posts. I’m excited/nervous to re-read it today and most likely queue it up for later this week.  On a slightly different note, this sweater is beyond cozy. Looking forward to living in it this fall.

229 : 365 Sunset from my living room window.

230 : 365 I took one photo of my dinner at like 10pm and it is so bad I’d rather pretend I didn’t take any photos on this day.

231 : 365 August 19th was International Geocaching Day. Jeff and I spent our morning out driving around looking for them and then later in the day we met up with my brother and his wife for dinner and more geocaching. All in all, we found fourteen total!

Hope your week is off to a great start!

It’s the little things…

by Kaylah Stroup August 19, 2017

You guys! It’s a ‘It’s the little things…” post that isn’t about my pets. Woooah! Wild, right? But it is something totally random…

A few weeks ago when I camping with my family, along with all my cameras, I packed some sparklers, and a container of stuff that was supposed to make the fire turn a different color. My dad actually bought it for me years ago while we were camping and I had just been holding on to it waiting for the perfect time to use it.

First night of this year’s camping trip was apparently the perfect time. The product worked way better than I could have imagined and lasted for quite a while. I had set up my camera before sprinkling it in since I assumed it’d be over quickly but much to everyone’s delight it lasted for quite a while.

Looking through my photos  of fire once we got home, I felt the same joy I felt the first time I really understood how to shoot photos of fireworks. You can find those photos here. Looking at those photos now I’m not super impressed. My abilities have improved tenfold but I’ll never forget how excited I was to get those photos. These make me feel the same way. I just love all the colors. Fire is already an interesting photo subject but it’s even better when it’s colorful!

Suuuper random, right? And probably not as exciting as cute photos of my dog but I geniuenly think it’s important to rejoice in all the good little things in life. Literally the whole point of this post series. Life is so short and full of obstacles so why not celebrate all the nice things – whether they’re rainbow fires, or simply being proud of your photography skillz.

So, tell me, what completely random thing brightened your day recently?

xoxo

PS. I couldn’t find the exact brand I used but I did find these color changing crystals that have pretty awesome reviews!

found on the beach – mellow yellow

by Kaylah Stroup August 17, 2017

I’ve been holding on to these photos for quite a few months now. Sadly, I haven’t been doing too much beach combing lately. The last time I went was actually my birthday at the beginning of the month. While there is still more trash than there should be, my favorite spot to hang out is fairly clean in the warmer months. It’s also full of people this time of the year which takes a little bit of the fun out of it. Beach combing is a solitary hobby for me. It’s my way to relax, unwind, and just zone out. It’s a way for me to get out of the house, yet still be alone. I miss it, and am very much looking forward to getting back into the swing of it as soon as the weather cools down a bit.

As I’m sure you’re already aware, I’m a huge fan of colorful arrangements. They’re my favorite to make. The more colors the better, in my opinion. Like this one, my all time favorite! Slowly but surely I’ve been making arrangements of single colors though. Check out blue + green! I eventually would like to do every color so that I can make a photo collage that includes one image of each arrangement of a single color. Today, I present to you, yellow!

plastic pollution, lake erie,

Not too many interesting finds in this color, at least not on the day I made it. I normally try to include unique finds in my arragements, if possible. It’s nice because that really catches people’s attention when they see recognizable items. While drawing attention to the issue of plastic pollution wasn’t my main goal in starting this little hobby, it’s quickly becoming something I’m passionate about so anytime I can create an image that gets people to stop and look is good! Sharing only the recognizable items like dinosaurs, hair clips, army men, etc kind of stinks though because I get comments like “I never find anything cool on my beach!” We shouldn’t really be finding anything made by humans washed up on beaches. I definitely don’t want anyone to think that I have this special beach where only neat things wash up, and it’s a good thing. There are a lot A LOT of random bits and bobs of trash.  This yellow arrangement definitely highlights those. Just lots of shards of broken plastic, and bottle lids for this color. That’s honestly the majority of what’s normally on the beach at any given time.

my favorite find of the day.

project 365 : days 219 – 224

by Kaylah Stroup August 14, 2017

219 : 365 I bet people who don’t constantly rearrange things have so much time on their hands. Only half joking here because, wow, I spend a lot of time scooting furniture and plants around. I really love those plants by the bookshelf! I’m sure in another month I’ll find an even better place for them though. …Because that’s just how it goes.

220 : 365 16.5 miles around the city. Not too shabby for a week night, eh?

221 : 365 Things on and near my desk. (teeth can be found here)

222 : 365 These planters and rainbows are some of my favorite things in my living room.

223 : 365 Pineapple shoes! Perfect to add a little flair to any outfit! (These exact ones are no longer available but I found a similar pair!)

224 : 365 Jeff and I found a record number of geocaches on Saturday! 18! Wooo! I honestly cannot stop thinking of geocaching. You know when you play a video game for too long and then when you close your eyes its what you see? Well, basically that is happening to me. The last few nights when I lay down and close my eyes before falling asleep I’m picturing walking around with my phone out shouting to Jeff how many feet it says I am away from the cache.

Other than geocaching, we also went to estate sales on Saturday! I haven’t been to one in far too long. I couldn’t resist this one though, promising tons of taxidermy. Despite getting there right as the doors opened, I watched a bunch of old men grab everything I wanted. Oh well. I did come home with a set of mounted horns and this very creepy porcelain baby. At first I just thought he’d look neat on a shelf in my living room but now I honestly want a whole collection of them.

Hope your week is off to an excellent start!

five products to help combat facial redness

by Kaylah Stroup August 10, 2017

For as long as I can remember I’ve had a red face. Maybe not all the time but one that reddens very easily. My skin is super sensitive. I blush at the drop of a dime, physical activity definitely equals very rosy cheeks, and after washing my face for the night? Its bright red. It’s the reason I don’t dye my hair light colors and the reason I almost always wear makeup. In the grand scheme of things, its not a huge deal but I do feel self conscious about it. I guess I just assumed that was what I was stuck with. That was my skin, whatcha gonna do about it?

Recently I was watching a medical show on television where someone was diagnosed with rosacea. I saw a lot of similarities between my skin and theirs. I don’t know that I have rosacea but it got me researching what I could do to maybe help my skin a bit.

A few weeks later, I feel like a new lady! I see such a huge difference in my skin. There were two products* in particular that I started using that made me want to write this post. I don’t know how many other people out there had sensitive, red, skin but I’ve gotta share!

Five products I use to combat facial redness!

  1. Coppertone water babies 50 SPF sunscreen. An obvious one – I am now wearing sunscreen on my face every single day. Since I’m pretty heavily tattooed, it was already part of my routine to wear sunscreen on basically every visible part of my body. Somehow, like a dummy, I didn’t consider how important wearing it on my face is. I picked up some baby sunscreen since it was a high SPF and I felt that it would be gentle on my skin.
  2. Vichy Purete Thermale facial cleanser. I had begun using this cleanser before starting my little hunt to reduce redness but immediately noticed how much more calm it left my skin compared to others. I love that I can use it to take off my eye make up as well. It’s one easy step that leaves my face feeling clean but not dried out or irritated.
  3. Tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is said to be good for a massive number of ailments. I used to use it on my cheek piercings to get rid of bumps. It worked really well and I’m wondering why I haven’t been using it on everything all these years.
  4. Thayers witch hazel. First of all, holy smokes, this smells amazing. Basically I bought witch hazel because I read multiple places that tea tree oil shouldn’t be used by itself on your skin since its so strong. I could have chosen any number of products to use it with but wow, witch hazel was definitely the right choice. Its known to be calming, help tighten pores, and smooth all without drying. Every night I wash my face with the cleanser mentioned above then squirt a little witch hazel on a cotton pad, add a few drops of tea tree oil and run that over my face and neck. My skin feels so amazing afterward. Most nights Jeff even joins me in this routine!
  5. Vichy aqualia thermal moisturizer. I was already using (and lovin!) this moisturizer but adding tea tree oil has made such a huge difference. I simply swipe some up with my finger and then add a drop or two of tea tree oil on the top before using it. Even without the tea tree oil, this is my new favorite moisturizer.

vichy, cleanser and moisturizerrose petal, witch hazel, skin care routine

Do you have any skin care products you especially love because they’re calming? I’m pretty darn happy with my current routine but always open to hear your rave reviews!
xoxo

*Obviously I listed five products in this post. All of them contribute to the overall appearnace of my skin but the two I feel made the biggest difference are tea tree oil and witch hazel. I seriously cannot recommend adding them to your skin care routine enough!

I guess I should remind you that results may vary! What works for me might not work for you. I’m not a medical professional, just a gal experimenting with different products.

Cherry Hill Cemetery

by Kaylah Stroup August 9, 2017

ferns, headstone, tombstone tourist

After camping last month, Jeff and I both were basically dragging our feet home. We camped about three and half hours away so the drive home felt a little like a mini road trip. Just enough of that open road feeling to tease you, and make you want so much more. I love every little detail about trips in the car. Watching out the window for hours, gas station snacks, and being in new small towns. We haven’t really been anywhere since our fourth annual road trip out west and the urge to just explore something new is strong.

All that to say, we were both not so subtly trying to extend the drive home. We visited a state hospital and it’s cemetery (where I got a creepy photo!), looked for geocaches, and stopped for snacks. There were so many interesting looking little cemeteries along the route but if we’d stopped at them all we might not have ever made it home. One finally caught my eye that I could resist. The sign said “Cherry Hill Cemetery. Rest in Peace” I shouted about how cool it was but denied the need to stop when Jeff asked. I rambled on about it for another minute or so before Jeff asked again “are you sure?” To which I replied “Yeah, maybe you should turn around”

headstone, cherry hill cemetery, pa, graveyard cemetery blog, taphophile

‘Rest in Peace’ is one of those things, similar to skulls, that despite being thought of frequently in correlation with cemeteries isn’t actually seen very often – at least not in this part of the United States. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a single time I’ve seen it in English in a real cemetery. So Cherry Hill Cemetery looked decent from the road but it was the sign that really drew me in. The sun was out in full force and with all the trees the lighting was pretty spotty so I didn’t plan on really taking any photos other than of the sign.

As it would turn out, I hated the photo I got of the sign but ended up getting drawn in to a shady corner where lots of smaller headstones were and the lighting was perfect! Small, old headstones are my favorite, especially when surrounded by slightly overgrown greenery. Even more than that, we had been camping somewhere that had a lot of ferns. On a hike through the ferns the day prior I got to talking about how awesome a cemetery covered in them would be. While this place wasn’t covered, it was kind of funny to find a little area abundant with them after just mentioning that.

While I darted around the cemetery taking photos, Jeff found a geocache so it all worked out wonderfully. I got to photograph a neat little cemetery with ferns, we got to log another cache, and we made it feel a little bit more like we were actually on a trip by checking out somewhere new.
xoxo
