adventures in avocado propagation IV

by Kaylah Stroup June 19, 2018

May 21st, 2018

Look how wild that one is getting! I’m a little grossed out by how… meaty(??), for lack of a better word, it is on the inside. At this time it seems to be the only one growing all that extra stuff.

May 26th, 2018

Look at all that growth! I’m super impressed with how quickly my little sprout seems to be growing. For a while it felt like it’d never make it’s way out and now every time I look at it I’m shocked how much taller it is. Even comparing these photos to the ones on the 21st of the month you can see how much it grew.

May 29th, 2018

We put the air conditioning unit in the window and all of my plants had to be moved from the kitchen table! I’m a little bummed because they did look so pretty there, all grouped together but they’d never survive with cold air pumping in on them.

June 2nd, 2018

Lots of growth and an accident. One of my containers slid and fell from my even so slightly slanted windowsill. I was pretty disappointed, especially since that one seemed to have some really interesting and healthy looking roots. Instead of throwing it away, I decided to just pop it back into the container, and see if it would still grow. Worst case scenario? It dies. Best case? I grow a tree!

June 14th, 2018

Didn’t see my avocados for over a week while I was off getting married. I expected to see a bit of change but I definitey did not expect to see all the growth that happened. All of my roots are SO wild! Pretty sure that one is just some sort of alien, not really an avocado! Look at the roots!

The photo above (and the one below) show the pit that had fallen and broken. Clearly that didn’t hinder it in the least. When I placed it back in the container the two pieces were carefully leaned up against each other so they wouldn’t just fall into the water. When I got back from the trip and finally checked on them there had been so much growth that they were both firmly pressed up against the glass. I’m thinking I might need to move it into a larger container so that it continues to have room to grow.

June 17th, 2018

Look at the leaves starting to open up on that guy! I’ve waited so long for this!!

Have you started your own avocado pits yet!? If you couldn’t tell, it’s pretty darn satisfying.
xoxo

instant photos from our wedding week!

by Kaylah Stroup June 18, 2018

Polaroid Originals color frame polaroid originals

Just a little round up of Polaroid film shot on our wedding road trip! One week on the road. We explored abandoned buildings in the desert, visited roadside attractions, hung out in a couple of caves, spent time checking out the Grand Canyon and uh… GOT MARRIED.

These road trips out west, which have become an annual thing for us, are the one time of the year that I completely go wild shooting instant film. It’s not a cheap hobby so I tend to hoard my film. There’s quite literally more film than food in our fridge most of the time!

Obviously I went into this trip knowing it would be even more special than normal. I took SO MANY POLAROIDS! Photos I know I’m going to treasure forever. The one of Jeff and I at our wedding, looking tough with our friends might be one of my absolute favorite polaroids ever. I already have it framed*. My scanner didn’t do it justice, at all.

I’m a huge fan of this film and it’s actually fairly inexpensive these days. I mean, comparatively. Still a little over $2 per photo but NOTHING beats being able to physically touch a photo, and watch it slowly develop. Despite the fact they’re not even close to the quality you’d get from a digital camera, there’s just something so special about them! I only wish I had taken more of them on this trip!
xoxo

*These frames are perfect for displaying instant film!

#fessermakesfaces – wedding edition!

by Kaylah Stroup June 7, 2018

Guys! I’m getting married this weekend. I’m not sure if you knew that. I mean, I’ve only been talking about it for seven months straight.

I’ve been counting down the days since the moment we officially set the date. Yet, somehow, I’m still shocked its here already. The photo above is a pretty accurate portrayal of how I feel. I managed to capture a few more photos of Professor that sum up some other thoughts and feelings I’m having…

How I feel about not getting to sit beside my fiance on the flight there.

Yelling from the back of the plane “Jeffy! We’re getting married!!!”

Realizing how the desert sun is going to fade my beautiful, freshly dyed, hair color the days leading up to the wedding.

Looking up to ceiling cat, wondering how I got so lucky.

But then realizing I have to get up at FOUR IN THE MORNING on my wedding day.

Stressing over all the tiniest details.

I’m filled to the brim with excitement!

I’m a little worried there will be a bunch of photos of me like this…

and this…

aaaaand this!

But mostly I’m just excited to nuzzle my scruffy faced man…forever!!!

xoxo

what I wore – a different kind of polka dots

by Kaylah Stroup June 5, 2018

what I wore, the dainty squid, ohio blog, target style pin game, flair, dainty squid, daisy natives kaylah doolan, cleveland blog, fashion blog, ohio

details
hat – thrifted
earrings – Target (similar pair)
cardigan – Charter School Cardigan via Modcloth
pins – girls support girls via Daisy Natives, look on the bright side via Rifle Paper Co
dress – Dalmatian Dress via Target
shoes – ballerina flats via Amazon (under $20 + they match everything!!)

I’ve always loved Target but y’all, they have been KILLING it lately. So many good earrings! I want all the housewares! And the clothes! Goodness gracious, the clothes! I don’t know when it started but basically every time I’ve been in there lately I find an item of clothing I really like. Most recently – this dress from the clearance section! I hadn’t seen in before and I apparently found the only one on clearance. (Most likely a return since it was marked ‘as-is’ and I still can’t find anything visibly wrong with it?) It’s not even my normal size but I tried it on anyway because the pattern was just too good to pass up. As luck would have it, the dress runs large and a small fits perfectly. Basically, it was there just waiting for me. You already know I have it in my suitcase for the wedding trip!

Hope you’re having an awesome week (+ that you find some hidden gems in the clearance section!)

found on the beach

by Kaylah Stroup June 4, 2018

beach plastic, plastic pollution, lake erie, the dainty squid

Back in the beginning of May, my best friend who lives in Canada and her family came up to visit. We had a busy weekend of eating and watching her kids play at the park. Ya know, super important stuff! We also made it a point to head to the beach.  Obviously, it’s one of my favorite spots in the city but her son, Milo, had brought me some beach glass from Croatia so we needed to find him some from Lake Erie.

I hadn’t planned on making an arrangement since they do take a bit of time and I didn’t want to make anyone wait around on me. Buuuut then I noticed Elycia was picking up random colorful bits and bobs. On top of that, I overheard her say something to Milo about laying things out in color order. It was on!

PS. For anyone interested, my sandals are Teva and I LOVE them. They’re like walking on clouds.

I guess that makes this my first collaborative beach trash arrangement. Half picked by Elycia, half picked by me plus a few bonus pieces Milo handed to us that he thought were neat. I think it turned out pretty darn awesome. I’m very happy with how the photos turned out as well, especially the one below. I love that you can see Cleveland in the background.

great lakes plastic pollution, cleveland beach

Before we left Elycia mentioned to me how she starting picking things up when we arrived originally because she just wanted to help clean up. She quickly realized that there’s just too much of it.

It sounds so pessimistic to say that it doesn’t matter but there really is so much that picking up even 49 lighters doesn’t make a dent. More will wash up tomorrow, or even later the same day. The issue isn’t that people are leaving things on the beach (although I’m sure lots of people leave litter there after seeing the condition.) These are all things that get washed ashore from the lake. According to this article I found, 22 million pounds of plastic enters the Great Lakes each year. Lake Erie receives 5.5 million of those! Picking up trash on the beach is great but the only real solution is prevention. It seems like an overwhelming task but even something as simple as using a reusable straw helps! Check out these two sites for more info on just how huge of a problem plastic straws actually are – strawless ocean + the last plastic straw.

Also, if you’d like a better idea of what the trash on the beach actually looks like outside the frame of my pretty little arrangements, I recommend checking out this post + this one too.

Favorite finds of the day! I apparently hit the toy cowboy jackpot. I’ve never seen a single one on the beach so finding two was a treat. My collection of plastic figures is getting pretty large. I’ll have to show y’all sometime soon…

5 rad things I bought in May

by Kaylah Stroup May 31, 2018

This month’s ‘things’ post is a little bit different than the previous months. Instead of beauty products I tried out this month (which other than a new moisturizer/sunscreen there weren’t any) I’m here sharing five things I bought this month. None of the items are related or go together in any way. I just feel like I acquired some really nifty stuff this month so here we go…

▴ Erlenmeyer flask set. A while back I bought a small chemistry flask at an estate sale. It just took that one and I was hooked. I needed more. I spotted this set, and the price was too good to resist. They’re the perfect size to put random leaves in for water propagation. They also make a really great vase for all the random flowers I like to pick. I had a few cute vases previous to this but nothing that fit my style so perfectly!

▴ 4-inch disco ball. Earlier this year I bought a large disco ball and discovered just how magical it was to set it in the sunlight. It doesn’t fit my decor style… at all but it honestly brings so much joy that I don’t even care. I had been wanting to pick up a second one for a while, one a little more inconspicuous. I finally decided on a 4-inch one. It’s not the highest quality but it certainly gets the job done when the sun hits it! I highly recommend grabbing one of these if you’ve been thinking about getting a disco ball but don’t want to commit to a larger size. I seriously think everyone needs one!!

Check out some photos featuring the magical lighting my disco ball throws here.

▴ Blink Socks. EYE am obsessed with these socks. That is all.

▴ Glide Gear OH50 tripod arm. This is something I had been wanting for YEARS but honestly had no idea how to find it, or it even existed. This arm attaches to your tripod and allows your camera to be horizontally positioned for overhead photos. It’s perfect for flat lays or anything else like that where you want the camera to be pointed straight down. I had such a hard time figuring out if this would work with the equipment I already have based on the information I could find online. Thankfully, it does, and holy cow, what did I do before this thing? It was super easy to set up + does exactly what I needed! This is 100% what my photography set up was missing!

Blogging about photography equipment isn’t really something I do all that often here on The Dainty Squid BUT since this is something that I had such a hard time researching/ think lots of bloggers would love I’ll gladly write a post dedicated to it, how it works, how it’d benefit you if that interests y’all! Lemme know!

▴ Gold Duck Feet Frame. Holds a 4x6in photo but it comes in 4x4in as well! Pretty sure I legit squealed when I spotted this frame. It matches my bird leg side table!! (Check out a picture of the table in my apartment here!) I mean, why does it even exist?! It’s so dumb, and it could not be more perfect for my apartment. Obviously, it’ll get a wedding photo in it as soon as we get those back!

Did you try/buy anything awesome this last month?

5 things I’m most excited about my wedding

by Kaylah Stroup May 30, 2018

What a silly title, right? I mean, obviously, marrying Jeff is the thing I’m most excited about in regard to our wedding BUT there are quite a few other reasons that I am counting down the days. We have just over one week left!

① Getting awesome photos of Jeff + I together! We’re both old pros behind the camera but for some reason we never take photos together. We always make plans to take lots of great desert photos together while we’re out there but end up getting distracted and don’t think about it until it’s too late. I am very, very excited to finally get some amazing photos of the two of us.

I obsess over every photo our wedding photographer posts on instagram. She is so dang talented, and I just know she’s gonna nail our photos. We don’t really have any photos displayed in our apartment but I already bought frames to show off our wedding photos!

② Getting my parents to the desert again. When I was four or five we took a family vacation out west. It’s something they both talk very fondly of and while they both loved it out there and would love to go back, it’s just not a priority to them. Obviously, they wouldn’t miss my wedding for the world so we’re basically ‘forcing’ them to finally go on vacation. I’m excited for everyone to go on this trip but the thought of my parents out there brings me the most joy. We’re actually flying in with them so I’m looking forward to seeing them soak it all in. I can’t wait to look for critters and explore abandoned buildings with my dad!

③ Seeing everyone together! This will be the vacation of a lifetime. Jeff’s family, my family + our friends! I mean, what other occasion would we have the excuse to gather up all these people on one epic trip!? I’m very much looking forward to seeing everyone interact and get to know each other.

④ Wearing a fancy dress. My dress is so beautiful, I can’t wait to actually wear it. Obviously I know what it looks like with all the other accessories but I’m eager to see it with my hair and make up done – and of course, to see what all of it looks like in the desert. We chose to have our ceremony fairly in the morning which means I’m getting up at the crack of dawn to start getting ready. I think for most people that sounds like the worst thing ever but I can’t wait to wake up and start getting all dolled up!

⑤ Showing everyone the places we love so much. I recently mentioned to Jeff how I couldn’t believe that we convinced everyone going to Arizona for our wedding was a good idea. Not only that but our ceremony site and the ‘reception’ venue are two hours apart. I know that everyone doesn’t love long drives like we do but I am so excited that they all are down for the adventure. Arizona holds a special place in our heart. There are so many spots I can’t wait to show off. So many areas we visited on our previous trips that I know our families are going to love.

I can’t wait to get started on this adventure, both the road trip + our life as a married couple!

what I wore: rainbows

by Kaylah Stroup May 23, 2018

details

glasses – Skunkboy in Panda Pearl via BonLook
earrings – Sass, Queen Hoops c/o Modcloth
cardigan – Charter School Cardigan via Modcloth
dress – It’s an Inspired Taste Dress c/o Modcloth
shoes – Color Me Casual Sandal c/o Modcloth

Earlier this month I got a message on Instagram from Modcloth (!!!) asking if I’d like to join #ModclothSquad. The purpose of the ModCloth Squad is to show a diverse range of personal style and creativity in outfitting while promoting the cultural values of inclusivity, female empowerment, and body positivity. Obviously my answer was a big fat yes! The hashtag, #ModclothSquad, is filled with tons of rad babes in rockin’ clothes. It’s one of the very few hashtags I actually follow. I’m super jazzed to be apart of such an awesome partnership!

This was also an excellent push to get back into the swing of outfit photos. I don’t know why it’s so easy to fall out of the habit. (Yes, I do. Winter is hard. Looking cute in the winter is still something I have yet to master!) I enjoy taking these photos so much. Even more than that I love looking back on them. When I look through my blog it bums me out so much that there are huge gaps in outfit photo posts. I truly enjoy them.

Anyway – This dress! I love the way it fits and feels. It’s structured but still very comfortable. Plus (and probably most importantly) it has pockets! I loved it from the second I put it on. I liked it even more after Jeff’s reaction to it. He said “Ohh! That’s going on our wedding trip, right?” Now it definitely will be!

Obviously, I chose the shoes knowing they’d look real rad in one of my found on the beach photos. The morning after I got them I made a point to go to the beach right after I woke up. I LOVE how it turned out. That probably won’t be the last time you see me doing it either! I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it – right?

Hope you’re having an excellent week! (Here’s a photo of Professor that should help if you’re not! You’re welcome.)

plant pressing tips

by Kaylah Stroup May 22, 2018

plant pressing tips

Around eight years ago I became interested in pressing plants. My love for the hobby has a sort of natural ebb and flow that’s fairly dependant on the season. Winter, obviously, isn’t a great time to find specimens. As soon as spring comes around each year I fall right back into old habits. Picking and saving all the prettiest little plants! It’s fun, it’s easy, and it’s really satisfying!

Every time I share photos of my pressed plants I get a few questions on my methods. I’m all about experimenting with what I’m pressing and how I do it. There is no wrong way to do it unless of course, you’re not getting the results you want. I thought it might be helpful if I shared some tips for pressing plants that I’ve learned through trial and error and some information on what I use.

My supplies and method

I always keep a notebook in my bag for pressing plants. No matter where you go there is always an opportunity to find something pretty to press. I like these moleskin notebooks because of the size and the band that keeps it closed but honestly, any type of book works! Word to the wise, don’t press in any super special books. It will leave marks and potentially ruin the pages. This is why I like to have a dedicated notebook on hand.

When I get home I always try to empty my notebook so I have lots of room in case I hit the jackpot next time I step outside. Your specimens will most likely dry just fine if you leave them in your small notebook (I leave mine in there about half the time) but for the best results, I recommend doing this next step.

After I’ve emptied out my findings for the day I transfer all the plants to a larger notebook but not before first sandwiching them between paper towels. This really helps the drying process because all the moisture gets soaked up in the paper towel. After everything is neatly layered in my notebook I cover it with something heavy and try to forget about it for a week or so. Drying time obviously depends on the plant size!

After they’ve dried completely you’re free to do whatever you’d like with them. I normally move mine to yet another notebook (this one is perfect!) and tape down my plants with some washi tape. I tape them down because it holds them in place, looks nice and keeps them organized. Also, I can remove them if I ever want to use them for another project. The ones that don’t get organized in the notebook are placed in a Rubbermaid container. Just make sure not to place anything in the container that isn’t completely dry. If you add moisture, you’re probably just gonna end up with a moldy container of rotten plants.

I have plants that I dried many many years ago that are still holding up beautifully! They’re fragile, of course, but their colors haven’t faded.

Some tips!

▴ Press the prettiest! Let me state the obvious here, your plant isn’t going to get any prettier after being pressed! Make sure to choose the healthiest looking one of the bunch.
▴ Say no to plastic. There needs to be something to absorb to moisture or someway for to it to escape so avoid putting plants in plastic baggies or airtight containers before they’re dry.
▴ Press fresh things. You really don’t want to press plants that are already dry or dead, they’ll just crumble.
▴ Remember that however you put them in your notebook is how they’re going to look when they’re done. Arrange all stems, leaves and other parts exactly how you want them to be when they’re dry before you close up your notebook.
▴ Make sure your specimen is dry to the touch. Carefully wipe off any moisture before pressing.
▴ Use paper towels that are flat and do not have a bumpy design on them or else that design will be imprinted on your plants. I’m partial to Viva.
▴ Try not to put big juicy plants near small nearly dry ones in your notebook or else the moisture from the big one may compromise the quality of the small one.
▴ Keep a small piece of paper towel folded up between your phone and its case to press plants when you don’t have a notebook. I mostly use this for when I find four-leaf clovers. You’re going to want to get them out of here as soon as possible since it traps moisture but in a pinch, it’s a great thing to have.

I think that’s just about everything! Like I mentioned at the beginning of the post, flower pressing is all about trial and error. After a little bit of practice, you’ll have your own routine that works for you. If you prefer to go a different route, plant presses exist (and have great reviews). I’ve also tried microwave flower presses! I always end back up at my favorite method though, the notebook! All you need to get started is a book of some sort to squish plants in between and you’re good to go!
