adventures in avocado propagation III

by Kaylah Stroup May 21, 2018

I’m back with another avocado pit update today!

Since the beginning of 2018 I’ve been experimenting with growing avocado pits. This whole process is less about growing a tree, and more about watching something grow. Growing things is so rewarding and with avocado pits it’s super easy – just add toothpicks, place in water and wait. Definitely requires a lot of patience though. It’s undoubtedly a slow going progress. I even have two pits that have been hanging out in a container since March that still have yet to do anything.

My last update was around a month ago, and in that month, lots has happened! Let’s get right to it…

April 30th, 2018

Four of the eight pits I have have cracked open and started to grow roots. The bottom of the tape on the containers marks where the roots were on the 24th. Seems like a pretty rad amount of growth for six days!

May 4th, 2018

This was the third pit to crack and sprout. I’m shocked at how quickly it seems to be growing, and at those little offshoots the roots has. So far it’s the only one that has them.

May 7th, 2018

Five cracked + starting to show roots!

Look at all that growth from the last flat lay photo! Six of the eight pits I have in water have cracked and started to grow roots.  I think it’s really interesting how they all are growing roots that look different. It’s also interesting how different the rate of growth is for each one. Some seem to being growing wildly, and others almost don’t seem to change.

ALSO, did you notice we’ve finally sprouted out the top!? I have been waiting SO long for this to finally happen!!!

Once again, I am super excited to see where we’re at in another month. Things really seem to be moving quickly now. It took so long for them to do anything at all but now there are visible changes almost every time I check on them. I can’t wait for my little sprouts to finally get some height to them!

Have you started your own avocado pits yet!?

Digit review – an update

by Kaylah Stroup May 17, 2018

Digit Review

2024 UPDATE: Digit is now called Oportun. I’m leaving this review as is though because I still stand by it. All these years later, I’m still using the app.

Back in November of 2016, I wrote a review on a money saving app that I had been using at the time for a few months, Digit. Over the last year and a half, I’ve gotten a handful of requests for an update, most asking ‘are you still using the app?’ and ‘do you still love it?’ Short answer to both questions – HECK YES. It’s been an invaluable service to me, one I think more people should know about! So, I’m back today with some more of my thoughts on Digit.

First, let’s start with what Digit is…

Digit is a money saving app. It’s very, very straightforward and takes no time at all to set up. You simply connect Digit to your bank account, it checks your spending habits and if you can afford it, takes a little bit out of your account to save. How often they save depends on your “unique financial situation” but the average is 2-3 times per week. The amount also varies. Their FAQ says the average is $10-30 which from my experience sounds about right. Although there have definitely been times it’s taken as little as fourteen cents! Every penny counts.

There isn’t much to do or see in the app, other than how much you’ve saved but what else do you need? If you feel it’s taking too much money from your account you can type “save less” or if you’d like it to take more type “save more”. You never have to worry about Digit taking more than you can afford though since they analyze your spending to see what you can afford to save. They even have a no-overdraft guarantee! They’ve never transferred more than they should have from me. Toward the end of each month, when my bills are due Digit lets me know it won’t be saving much because I “have some expenses coming up”.

Digit is free to use for the first 30 days, after that its $2.99 a month. I’ve been using them since before this price was implemented so when they sent out the “hey, we’re gonna start charging” email I was definitely disappointed. I considered deleting my account but it’s undoubtedly worth the subscription cost!

When you save for three consecutive months Digit will automatically reward you with a 1% annualized savings bonus. It’s not a ton (unless of course, you’re saving a ton) but free money is free money!

I’ve saved… A LOT.

In the nearly two years I’ve been using Digit I’ve saved thousands of dollars. Not exaggerating here. Money that I know for a fact I would have just spent on stupid odds and ends at Target had it not been out of my bank account. Money I definitely wouldn’t have saved otherwise! I am not great at saving my own money. I have a savings account which I add to but it’s just too easy to transfer that money right back into checking. Although transferring money back into my account from Digit is super easy and only takes one day, the seperation is enough to make me reconsider any unnecessary purchasing.

Something I think that’s really neat is you can set up ‘goals’ in the app. So instead of all the money it saves you being shown as one total, you can make separate savings goals. For instance, I have the one it sets up automatically ‘rainy day’ as well as ‘honeymoon’, ‘roadtrip’, ‘taxes’, and ‘oh crap’. It saves separate amounts for each of those goals which really helps me see what I have and act accordingly. Instead of being tempted to take out all of my savings in Digit when we go on a roadtrip I know that I have X amount of dollars that I have set aside specifically for this while not cutting into money I need to be saving for my quarterly tax estimates.

So, what do I use Digit for?

Obviously, I use it to save money but I have a few examples of times it really came in handy. My earlobe reconstruction? It wasn’t cheap but I had saved the money in Digit so I was able to do it without stressin’. My car needed a fairly costly repair a while back, I just pulled the money from Digit! I was even able to buy a wedding dress and book the florist with money I had saved in Digit.

Final thoughts.

If I had to choose my top five apps on my phone, Digit would easily make the cut! If you’ve ever wished you were better at saving money or wondered how to easily save for a trip/that camera/those shoes – this is the app for you! Other than the $2.99 subscription price (which like I said – is totally worth it) I can’t think of a single downside! I highly, highly recommend giving it a whirl! I mean, who wouldn’t benefit from saving a bit more!?

less than one month left!

by Kaylah Stroup May 10, 2018

Y’all there is less than one month left until Jeff and I tie the knot.

Lemme repeat that. Less than one month!

My dress is ready. I’ve found the perfect shoes. Our photographer is paid for. My hair and make up are booked. (Oh my gosh, what a hassle this has been.) I hired a florist. Hotel rooms are booked.

The only big thing left to do is a book a flight. Honestly, I’m a little stressed about that. Okay, a lot stressed. When we first got engaged round-trip flights were dirt cheap. We figured we’d wait a little while to book and what a mistake that was. They’ve nearly tripled in cost. There is going to come a point where we just have to book regardless of price sooo yeah, that sucks. Or who knows, maybe we’ll decide to drive if the prices just continue to rise. Either way, I’m ready to get that decision over with. I think it’ll feel a little bit more real when we have travel plans set in stone. Cross your fingers prices drop ASAP!

There are also a few other small things I want to do beforehand like find the perfect earrings, and figure out what I want to do with my nails. I’m sure there a couple other tasks like that but for the most part those aren’t really even bothering me. I spent so much time and energy worrying about my dress and hair that I basically have no more f’s to give. We’re in the home stretch now and I’m just ready to party.

All of that to say I one hundred percent cannot believe its actually happening. It’s almost like the closer it gets the less it seems real. There’s no way we’re actually taking an epic roadtrip with our family and friends! There’s no way I’m actually going to walk down a desert path with my dad to meet my handsome dude at the ‘altar’. It all just seems so unfathomable. It’s going to be SO AMAZING!

cookies Jeff’s mom made for my bridal shower!

Last weekend Jeff’s mom and sisters threw me a bridal shower. I wasn’t super jazzed for there to be a party where all the attention was on me but it was honestly a blast. We had brunch and they decorated so so so cute. There were plants on the table for all the guests in the sweetest little containers that said ‘let love grow. jeff + kaylah’ and then our wedding date. It was so much more than I ever expected. I am so so so thankful to have not only scored Jeff but the absolute best in-laws possible. I love his family.

One of the highlights of the shower for me was a questionnaire his sister, Emily, organized. Questions like ‘how long have Jeff + Kaylah been dating?’, ‘how many states have they been to together?’, ‘where did they go on their first date?’, etc. She had sent them to me beforehand so that I could answer but the very last question was a surprise. She had asked Jeff ‘what’s your favorite thing about Kaylah?’ His answer? ‘She feels like home.‘ I managed to not sob in front of everyone (because, thankfully, I was able to avoid eye contact for a few minutes) but just typing that now made me cry. I can’t believe how lucky I am.

I actually can’t even talk too in depth (or like at all) about the wedding without crying. I’ve already told y’all a million times how I’m a crybaby. I cry when I’m mad, when I’m sad, when something is too cute, and definitely when I’m happy. The closer we get to the big day, the more I cry – about the most stupid stuff too. The thought of us getting into the rental car? Tears!  Meeting up with our families in the desert? More tears! Thinking about seeing Jeff for the first time? MAJOR TEARS. This whole ordeal is just going to be a sobfest. OR maybe I’ll shock everyone and spend so much time laughing that I somehow don’t cry. Let’s hope for that!

the little things

by Kaylah Stroup May 7, 2018

Since the moment Klaus came into my life I’ve been sharing little updates on how he’s been getting along with the cats. Perhaps that’d be better worded as ‘how the cats are getting along with him.” He’s always wanted to be friends but Squid and Professor have been a little resistant. I thought maybe it’d take six months or a year but never did I think it’d take five years!

We’ve had tons of major progress since moving into this apartment at the beginning of 2017 though. Over the weekend we had a pretty awesome lil thing happen…

I walked into the living room from my office and spotted THIS beautiful sight. Jeff was sitting on the couch too but on the complete opposite site, not in contact with either animal. That makes this only the second time I’ve caught them cuddling alone and definitely the time with the most contact. My jaw dropped when I saw them. Jeff was instantly ‘What’s wrong? What happened?!’ ‘Look at THEM!’ I squeaked.

In the past Professor probably would have scurried away when I got out the camera and started taking photos of the two of them together but instead he stayed, and rolled around a bit. I nearly lost my mind when he stretched and put his tiny feet on Klaus’ back.

I am so in love with these two and their budding friendship. The cuddling was obviously cute but Klaus’ brand new red collar matching Professor’s red bowtie really took it over the top for me.

I can’t believe it’s taken SO long for this progress but I am HERE FOR IT.
xoxo

five favorite corners of my home

by Kaylah Stroup May 3, 2018

Inspiration for this post struck after snapping a photo of a corner of our living room that I really love. (Below!) I just adore this apartment. There are so many little areas that I can’t get enough of. If you follow me on instagram (@thedaintysquid) you might already be familiar with a lot of these spots because they’re ones I tend to photograph time and time again.

① I recently rearranged this corner and was instantly smitten! This medical man is one of my all-time best secondhand scores. I have never once, for even a second, considered giving him up but there have definitely been times where I’ve had trouble displaying him in a way that really showed off just what an awesome piece he is. The second I put him here, just to see what it would look like, I knew he was staying put.

That shot is basically a summary of everything I love about our living room. My favorite plant, the beautiful blue couch, taxidermy, and my medical man – all things that make our space unique & perfect for us! The only thing missing is a pet – I guarantee one was just out of frame though…

② Technically not all that far away from the shot above but a totally different view. Wherever my curiosity cabinet happens to be will always earn bonus points from me but I feel like I picked some really fun stuff for on top! And that little shelf of knick knacks above it? I’M OBSESSED. Jeff and I have lots of weird little odds and ends so having that style of shelf to display them on has been perfect. I’m able to rearrange all the time, there’s always things coming and going.

③  This view of my desk is one I really, really love. I think a lot of it has to do with that cactus neon lamp, my colorful keyboard, and of course, my wire memo board. (Still one of the easiest + best DIYs ever!) After arranging about seventy three times in this room I think I’ve finally found the perfect layout. My desk is on the shortest wall in the room which makes for the coziest workspace. I love being in here.

Just look how perfect it looks when it’s dark outside!

bird leg table!

④ The casually color organized books, that skull, the face planters, and goodness gracious, the bird leg table! This area has been one of my favorites since right after we moved in. It’s had more than a handful of different arrangements but the general idea has stayed the same – colorful books + plants.

Something I really enjoy about this view is the great evening lighting it gets. Those specks of light from the disco ball are just the tip of the iceberg. There’s usually major rainbows too! We normally don’t hang out in here until evening so it’s almost like it’s waiting on us to be it’s best.

⑤ Last but certainly not least, our kitchen table. Jeff and I went so long without having a table! Neither of us had one before we lived together either so it felt really special to purchase one together, even if it was just a tiny one. I love eating breakfast here, and dog watching while I work from my laptop. Slowly but surely it’s being taken over by plants, and that just makes me love it a little more. The way the sun shines in through that window means the room is almost always filled with rainbows or beautiful specks of light from my disco ball. It’s just lovely.

How about you – where are your favorite corners of your home & why?

photo diary – first hike of spring 2018

by Kaylah Stroup April 25, 2018

Spring is here! Well, it’s trying at least.

I’m definitely one of those people who just barely scrapes by each winter. I just can’t stand being cooped up. I don’t like being cold, and the lack of sunshine is ROUGH for me. So, as soon as Spring starts to show it’s pretty face, I get pumped! Klaus gets to go on more walks, I opt to take my bike downtown instead of my car, and we usually celebrate the changing season by taking a few chilly hikes with my parents.

There’s something really special about those first few hikes of the new season. It’s magical seeing everything coming back to life. New plants working their way up through the leaves and debris from last fall. Birds chirping and my favorite spring noise, peepers! It’s just a good feeling. I cherish those hikes. I always end up taking lots of photos, I think in an effort to soak it all up better.

I LOVE these photos!

Here’s to many more days spent outside. Spring, I am so happy you’re back!

adventures in avocado propagation – an update

by Kaylah Stroup April 24, 2018

Since the beginning of this year I’ve been patiently experimenting with growing avocado pits. It’s an extremely slow going adventure but one I’ve become completely enthralled with. I check on my pits multiple times a day (seriously, I can’t help it) and celebrate even the smallest bit of growth and change. It’s been since mid-March that I’ve given an update on how things are growing so I figured it was time to pop back in with some photos. It may not look like much but I’m super stoked with how things are going!

avocado propagation

March 23, 2018

The second photo above shows growth about to sprout out the top of my oldest pit. To be honest, I’m not feeling so confident with this one. It seems like it was moving along at a fine pace for a while but doesn’t seem to be doing much these days. It could just be that I check it forty thousand times a day so the progress is hard to notice… To be honest, that’s probably the case.

avocado propagation in water avocado propagation - pit growth!

April 6th, 2018

My three pits with roots! The longest root poked out the bottom of the pit in late February. The second largest came out in early March and seems to be growing at a much quicker rate than the first did. Just proving to me every plant is different! I wonder if it’ll end up sprouting out the top first.

April 15th, 2018

Such a huge split! Kinda wild that the tiny amount of growth inside is enough to hold this thing together. It is super fragile though…

April 19th, 2018

Root progress on my oldest four. I’m pretty darn impressed how quickly that second one caught up to the oldest!

April 22nd, 2018

See that blue mark on the container in the last photo? That’s a mark where that root was on the 10th of the month! I’m pretty jazzed on how much it’s grown! I marked the containers of all my pits with roots but accidentally wiped it off on all of them except this one when I changed their water. I might try washi tape next so my marks don’t come off as easy because it is SUPER satisfying to see the progress measured like that.

I think it goes without saying, I’m super excited to see where these guys are in another month! I’ve got my fingers crossed that by my next update we’ll have some growth popping out the top. Watching them grow even this much has been riveting but I think that’s when the fun will really start.

found on the beach – 49 lighters

by Kaylah Stroup April 23, 2018

found on the beach

I think this just may be my favorite found on the beach arrangement!

When I first started doing these arrangements five or six years ago I always made them in the sand. It was super important to me that I found a clear little section of sand with no other debris. I was really nitpicky about finding the *perfect* spot. A lot of the time I would even use a piece of drift wood as a rake to clear an area and smooth out the surface. After a while those felt kind of boring but it really took until last year for me to realize how much I enjoyed placing them on other natural surfaces. This arrangement on the rocks of the breakwall set the tone for my recent work. I just loved the way my colorful finds looked against the dark rocks, and the juxtaposition of something natural paired with the trash.

Since the weather has started to just barely warm up, they’ve been taking better care of the beach, or at least making it look like they are. They plow all the trash, driftwood, miscellaneous debris, and sand to one end and then scoop that all up into a dumpster. It doesn’t actually clean the beach because I’m willing to be at least a portion of that ends right back up in the lake since it isn’t being recycled.  Even freshly plowed, I still managed to find 49 lighters in one walking pass of the beach. Plus three more on my walk back to the car. I don’t think I’ll ever get over how many there are to find!!

lighters found along the shores of Lake Erie

Let’s end this with a quick shot of what one little section of the lake looks like. Fun to pick through for me but honestly, so sad. Could you imagine being a fish in that? Earth Day was yesterday but this is something we need to be thinking about everyday if we ever want it to get better.

11 years

by Kaylah Stroup April 19, 2018

The end of this month marks Squid’s 11th birthday!

Up until about a week ago I thought she was turning ten this year buuut that’s neither here nor there. I apparently don’t understand simple math.

Squid doesn’t get much air time on The Dainty Squid. I mean, this whole thing is named after her so that counts for something, right? Everything I would normally say about her has recently been proven wrong. I wrote all about her big changes in this post about how the animals have been thriving in our new apartment. It’s her birthday though so it seems only right to share a little bit more about the sweetest little black kitten in the world…

below 2007 + 2018

For the first ten years of her life, Squid was a quiet cat. She was reserved, and mostly kept to herself. She had never been particularly mean or agressive toward the other animals but you could tell she’d rather be left alone. In hindsight, she’d have most likely preferred to be an only cat. But how are you supposed to know these things? If you were visiting and didn’t know I had two cats you’d probably never figure out I had a second. She liked me, and only me. Period.

This last year though? She’s a different cat. I’ve even joked that we must have somehow accidentally lost her and picked up a new black cat in the move. I never felt like she was unhappy, just shy. She has definitely come out of her cocoon this last year!

Squid is so talkative these days. She’s never had a normal meow, just some silly little noises she squeaks out but they’ve been louder and more frequent than ever. Just like Professor, if you talk to her, she’ll almost always respond back. She often comes up to me at my desk, gently taps me on the arm, and lets out a few squeaks to let me know she needs pet. It’s heartbreakingly cute.

One of the biggest changes is that she actually plays with Professor now. If you hadn’t noticed from his photos, Professor is an absolute character. He’s constantly darting around the house, meowing up a storm – normally alone. In the last six months or so, Squid has started running around with him. They chase each other around the house daily! Totally normal cat stuff but it’s a huge deal to see Squid doing it. She’s acting like a kitten!

It seems like every other week we have a big development. First, she started cuddling with Professor then I woke up one morning and she was laying with Klaus!!! (That obviously made my whole day!) She wants to cuddle all. the. time. and almost always follows Jeff or I from room to room. It’s so sweet to see this kitty who was so shy, and would rarely sit in my lap become this cuddle crazed meow machine. It makes me so happy to see her obviously living her best life.

Here’s to many more years with you, Squid! Fingers crossed you only get more playful, and more cuddly as time passes.
xoxo
