three days in New England

by Kaylah Stroup August 13, 2018

My husband and I (gah! so fun to type!) just got back from a nice little roadtrip around New England. Although probably one of our least well-planned trips, it turned out pretty rad. We, perhaps, spent a little bit too much time driving and would have probably had a bit more relaxing of a trip if we’d just slowed down and only chose one or two states to concentrate on but we had a blast regardless. We saw a ton, covered a bunch of ground, and I managed to cross off a few travel bucket list items.

When we traveled to New Orleans last year I wrote a summary type of post that covered a bunch about what we did. I really enjoy looking back on it. Of course, there will be lots of posts about favorite stops along the way but I enjoy writing this type of post as well because I get to talk about all the little fun details that might not be big or exciting enough to write a ton about.

What we did…

We drove… a lot. Maybe more than planned. Straight from Ohio to Connecuit where we made a quick stop at a maybe not so abandoned theme park. We checked out Seaside Sanatorium and then grabbed a hotel for the night because holy cow, sitting in the car all day is exhausting. The morning started in Salem, Massachusetts which was just as cute and quirky as I had hoped. I love when towns really embrace whatever they’re known for, like Roswell with their alien… well, everything. I was even excited to see that Salem’s taxis had witches on them! After walking around a while there, we headed off to Portland, Maine, making a few stops along the way to check out old cemeteries. In Portland I ate my first lobster roll, we hung out at a coffee shop for a bit then visited the ocean. I’m pretty sure that this might have been one of my favorite visits to the Atlantic so far. I still can’t stop talking about it. After that, we grabbed a hotel in Manchester, New Hampshire to rest up for the long drive home. I crossed Ponyhenge off my bucket list, finally, and we made a brief stop in Natick, Massachusetts to visit Kristina at Calliope Paperie (who had the audacity to not be in town that day. Hehe!) The rain started to pour down, and we finally hit the road for Cleveland.

What we ate…

  • Caramel Patisserie in Salem, MA. A few years ago I was a macaron nut. I made it a priority to try some in every new city we visited. They were wildly popular at the time, and everyone and their mom was trying their hand at making them. This resulted in more than few not so awesome macarons being ingesting. Don’t get me wrong, even a bad macaron isn’t horrible but for the amount they cost I just hated gambling on them. I’d rather spend my money on new and exciting desserts. All of that to say, Jeff suggested we get some macarons since we hadn’t had any in a while. Holy cow, Caramel Patisserie’s macarons were top notch. I’m back to being completely obsessed. If you get a chance, try some of theirs! I highly recommend the rose or chocolate passionfruit.
  • Becky’s Diner in Portland, ME. Jeff’s main objective foodwise was lobster roll. Becky’s Diner was SO great. We got seated upstairs on a patio overlooking the water… completely by ourselves! It was my very first lobster roll, (loved it!) and Jeff said it was the best one of his life.  Our waitress was super sweet and seemed genuinely excited to give us beach recommendations. It was a relaxing little stop!
  • The Holy Donut in Portland, ME. I’ve been craving these since our last visit a few years back!
  • The Common cafe & kitchen in Natick, MA. While eating it, I wasn’t wildly impressed with their avocado toast. Now though? I can’t stop thinking about it and how good it sounds!

This was the first trip ever I actually did a good job at packing snacks! We, of course, ate a couple more places than listed and picked up coffee a few more spots but for the most part, we ate what we had. I’m pretty proud of all the goodies I packed, honestly.

Highlights for me!

  • Finally crossing Salem off my travel bucket list. There are lots of other places I want to visit, obviously but it feels good to finally cross off another city I’ve been dreaming about!
  • Holy Land, U.S.A. I only snapped a few quick photos because the property was sporting some seriously threatening ‘no trespassing’ signs. I wish I could have spent time exploring and taking photos but honestly, just seeing it in person was very exciting.
  • THE OCEAN, ugh, the oceeeeeaaaaan. I love Lake Erie but there really is something so special about the ocean.
  • Ponyhenge!!!!
  • All the headstones with skulls and cherubs! Gah! You best believe I have lots of cemetery photos coming soon. Hope you’re ready!
  • Just being on the road in general. Of course, there were moments it was not so fun but Jeff and I truly just enjoy driving new places. The excitement of never knowing what you’ll see next and knowing that around any bend or just off any exit might be your next big adventure.

I can’t wait to really start sorting through my photos. I’m very excited to share more soon!

Until next time, New England!
xoxo

abandoned motel in New Mexico

by Kaylah Stroup August 9, 2018

Desert West Motel, abandoned, swimming pool

Cruising down the highway shortly after entering New Mexico, Jeff and I spotted this abandoned motel at the exact same moment. We gave each other the look and quickly agreed that even if we couldn’t get inside it’d make for some cool exterior shots. Despite having just stopped an exit or two earlier to check out a cemetery, we were ready to stretch our legs again.

As it would turn out, the Desert West Motel was wide open and a prime spot to spend some time wandering around. Jeff, my dad, and I all had a blast here wandering around the property. Dipping into rooms to check out it’s contents. Stacks of mattresses, garbage bags full of trash, and tumbleweeds filled the majority of them.

Seems as though while in operation it wasn’t that great of a place. One and two star reviews are almost all there is to be found. Pool was closed, resturant was closed, no hot water, broken furniture – all things repeated in each. The last review dating back to 2013. Most do mention the one positive – ‘no bugs!’

Spots like this are my favorite. Abandonment in the desert is so much different than here in Ohio. Wish we could explore spots like this more often. They always seem to be worth a stop.

28th birthday party!

by Kaylah Stroup August 7, 2018

Last week Jeff text me while he was at work to ask if I wanted to camp out at my parents with my niece over the weekend. She was unable to come to our wedding reception (where everyone camped out). She was sad to have missed it but had the opportunity to travel that weekend with friends and Jeff and I encouraged her to use any opportunity ever given to travel.  We promised her that later in the summer we’d meet her out at my parents to hammock, and hang out. I had really been looking forward to it too. Hammocking with the kids is so much fun. So, anyway, I said yes and we made plans to head out to my parents on Saturday to meet up with two of my nieces and my nephew. I thought absolutely nothing was out of the ordinary.

We arrive at my parents, and I start to head over to tie Klaus up since he’s a bit of a wanderer when we’re out there. Then I hear “Kaylah!” Thinking it’s one of my nieces I turn around to look back at the pavillion but instead I spot Elycia and her family. If you’re thinking ‘I bet you cried.’ You’d be right. I did! It was such a surprise! A funny one too since I had spent the whole morning going on and on about how much I missed Elycia and how I wish she lived closer. Jeff actually said he thought I knew that I’d be seeing her later because I brought her up so much that morning.

Slowly, one by one, more friends showed up throughout the day. It was such a wonderful surprise. I honestly had no idea, and didn’t expect anything! We ate, we shot off fireworks, we ziplined. It was great. I’m so thankful to have such awesome friends and family. I feel so loved.

A few highlights of the weekend…

▴ That picture of Olive above. COME ON. Is that pure summer joy or what?!

▴ The zip line! If you follow me on instagram, you already got a small peek at the zip line that Jeff and my dad built earlier this summer. It’s basically my favorite thing ever. I love going down it over and over but I also get a lot of joy from watching others on it. I’m just tickled pink to have such a fun family.

▴ My parent’s dog, Ellie May, is hilarious in the pond. She doesn’t drink from it like a regular animal, she has to get completely in to get a drink. I’ve seen her do it a million times but it still makes me laugh.

▴ Hammock party. We had six hammocks hanging together between a few trees. It’s so cozy and such a fun way to sleep under the stars. (Get one! They’re under $20. Mine has lasted four summers so far!)

▴ After it got dark, we rode the zipline while holding roman candles. It was SO MUCH FUN. Zipping into total darkness is really strange. I’m looking forward to doing it again!

▴ Sitting around the fire with my mom, Jeff, Elycia, my nephew, and niece after everyone else went to bed was so much fun. We did lots of laughing, and gained more than a few new inside jokes.

▴ I hate seeing them grow up but I am really excited to actually become friends with my nieces and nephew. They’re such cool kids!

▴ You guys, this was my fourth time seeing my best friend, Elycia, and her family in just as many months!!! That’s really good for us. We were both a little too lax about making plans for a while. I love her so much, and her children are just perfect. I’m so happy blogging brought us together.

▴ Olive really liked wearing helmets. Tiny children in huge helmets is a very, very cute sight. After stripping herself down to a diaper a bit earlier, she insisted on wearing a helmet before going on a fourwheeler ride with Jeff. A fashionista, for sure!

28 is off to a pretty rad start!

TWENTY-EIGHT

Today I am twenty-eight years old. It’s… whatever. I don’t know. I’m trying not to stress about ‘getting old’, and I think I’m doing a decent job. I’m happy to be in good health. (I mean, I could do with fewer headaches…) Happy to be recently married, to be comfortable in my own skin, to have the cutest lil apartment in my favorite neighborhood, to have lots of travel plans coming up, et cetera. I’m also pretty darn jazzed to have an excuse to bug my friends to go on bike rides, and eat ice cream with me. Not that I ever need an excuse…

Just like last year, I’ll be doing my best to stay busy on my birthday. I used to like to lay around and just relax on my birthday but the older I get, the more I realize how much happier I am when I’m moving about. Hopefully by the time this post goes live I’ll have already grabbed coffee, hit the beach, and come home to get cleaned up. I spotted some estate sales that look ripe for the pickin’. Cross your fingers I find all the best treasures today.

The Dainty Squid birthday

Fun little side note about this dress, when I was checking out the cashier, a woman of similar age but of very different style, was like “Oh my gosh, I can just see you in this. You’re gonna look amazing!” It was basically the best thing ever. I’m pretty sure I left the store glowing. I really do love this dress and feel like it’s very flattering but honestly, no idea how much of it is just because she hyped me up so much. Either way, I love it – both the dress, and women building up other women! Can you do me a birthday favor? Give someone you see a genuine compliment.

7 things I tried in July

by Kaylah Stroup July 31, 2018

① Alba Botanica Pure Lavender Sunscreen. I go through a lot of sunscreen. Well, everyone should but I’m very visibly tattooed and try super hard to keep them protected from the sun all the time. I was standing in line at TJ Maxx when I spotted this sunscreen. I already have three or four random bottles of sunscreen around the house so normally this wouldn’t have caught my attention except the bottle was purple. Something about the shade of it, my brain knew before I even read it that it would be lavender. I love lavender! Needless to say, I bought it.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m more of a spray on sunscreen type of gal but I LOVE this stuff. It spreads easily and doesn’t leave a white coating on your skin. It basically just feels and applies like lotion. Obviously, smelling like lavender instead of regular old sunscreen scent is a highlight for me as well. I’m hooked.

② Face pot. This was an impulse buy that ended up being a really good purchase. I love planters with faces. Honestly, I just love any inanimate object with a face. It’s a fair price. Cheaper than I’d expect for what it is and where it’s from, honestly. That’s probably what really inspired the purchase. It was like ‘ahh, I can’t resist!’ Happy to report it’s just as cute in person as it is online.

③ IMAK Compression Pain Relief Mask. I frequently get headaches, and occasionally get migraines as well. I’ve owned a few eyes masks that were supposed to help but nothing that I ever used more than once. I started to think that, even though I really enjoy having something over my eyes when I have a headache, masks just weren’t my thing. Jeff bought me this one and I now realize I was just using the wrong masks.

It has a little bit of weight too it but not too much that it’s uncomfortable. Like many other eye masks marketed toward folks with headaches, you can pop it in the freezer. It doesn’t get intolerably cold or stiff, unlike others I’ve tired. I’ve used it a handful of times since I got it and each time it’s been a huge relief. It’s certainly not a miracle worker, it doesn’t get rid of migraines but it helps them be a bit easier to deal with.

A lot of times when I have a migraine or even a really bad headache, I have trouble falling asleep. I just toss and turn. Using this mask helped me do less of that. The weight on my face was comforting and completely blocking out light (something that I’m super sensitive to when my head hurts) was awesome. I highly recommend grabbing one!

④ Migrastil Migraine Stick. Another purchase by my thoughtful husband! It was a bad month for me and my head. I feel like I had a headache more days than I didn’t this month. This roll-on ‘migraine stick’ is just essential oils (peppermint, spearmint & lavender) that you’re supposed to rub on your temples, forehead, and the back of your neck. Once again, not a miracle worker but certainly something that helped! I especially enjoyed putting it on my temples and then putting on my face mask. It smells very relaxing and helped lull me to sleep more than once.

⑤ Ombre keyboard cover. Since discovering many years ago that I could put stickers or a cover on my keyboard to make it cute I have not had a blank keyboard for more than a week at a time. I mean, if you have the option to make something cute, why not?! For my birthday (and because I really needed one!) I bought a new iMac. I obviously needed a cover for my keyboard. I didn’t find any super colorful ones that I liked so I picked out this gray and black one. I love it way more than I thought I would. It fits perfectly, keeps my keys clean, and feels really nice to type on. Definitely recommend picking one up!

⑥ 10 pack of crystal ball pendants. To be fair, this isn’t a new purchase. I already owned two of them. When I saw this ten pack for essentially the same price I bought a set of two for, I had to grab them. I have a couple sitting in each window now. We have SO many rainbows! It’s the best. Such a mood booster!

For more pictures of the rainbows these produce, check out this post.

⑦ Kueshi Double Effect Make Up Remover. I received this makeup remover in my July Glossybox. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I don’t have a solid makeup removal technique. Sometimes I use water and a washcloth, other times just a face wipe but to be honest, I hate both of those methods. This came to me at a perfect time. I put a tiny amount on a cotton pad and it removes everything with a quick swipe. It’s not greasy and it doesn’t smell like anything. I dig it!

Did you try/buy anything awesome this last month?
xoxo

Steins Cemetery

by Kaylah Stroup July 30, 2018

ghost town cemetery, Steins Cemetery

The FindAGrave app isn’t perfect but it did lead me here and that definitely counts for something!

Normally the drive back from anywhere feels so much shorter because you have whatever you did to occupy your mind. This definitely should have been the case, since Jeff and I had just gotten married a few short days earlier, buuut the drive from Phoenix back to Dallas/Fort Worth Airport was long. LONG. Loooong. I guess what made it feel so long was that we knew we were on a tight-ish schedule. There was time to explore but at the same time, we all just really wanted to get some miles behind us so that it didn’t seem quite so daunting. Fifteen and a half hours is a lot of time in the car!

It had only been a few hours since our detour to Tombstone, AZ but we were all ready to find somewhere to stop again. This will be a repeating theme throughout the rest of the posts I have from our drive after the wedding. I love long car rides but what’s the fun if you’re not stopping every twenty minutes to check out things along the side of the road and take photos?! Luckily, my husband and my parents feel the same way.

I haven’t been to too many of them, but I’m hooked on desert cemeteries. On any road trip, I’m going to make an effort to find interesting cemeteries but in the desert my need to find them is even more intense. The FindAGrave app showed Steins Cemetery coming up, it looked pretty small. Only 24 memorials are listed but the three small thumbnails in the app looked promising. I was stoked from the second we pulled up! It was beautiful! Okay, maybe not everyone’s vision of a beautiful cemetery but the absolute perfect desert cemetery. A strange variety of memorial types – flat stones, crumbling concrete crosses, and small wooden planks – all weathered by the hot sun. No two headstones were the same, and most weren’t even remotely similar to the ones beside it. It was an interesting hodgepodge of styles, for sure!

The cemetery is small but an excellent place to stop, stretch your legs, and of course, poke around a bit. There’s even a geocache right outside the cemetery! Here are five reasons to start geocaching, if you haven’t already.
