what I wore : covered in bugs

beetle blouse! overalls + a button up shirt beetle blouse

details
hat – Target
glasses – Louise via Warby Parker
shirt – Bug Me button down by Catalog Classics (no idea why that listing only takes you to one specific size but here’s a link that shows all available sizes)
lapel pin – Caitlin Stout (no longer available)
overalls – TJ Maxx (I also recommend checking out Charlotte Russe if you’re looking for overalls!)
boots – fringe booties by Alpine Swiss

You guys, I found a beetle shirt!!! Last summer I found that beetle dress which was AWESOME but also a bit obnoxious. Obviously that doesn’t stop me from wearing it, and I definitely have a penchant for loud clothing. I also really enjoy wearing things that look moderately normal from a distance but up close reveal something super fun. This shirt falls into that category. Unless you’re really looking at what I’m wearing you might miss the fact that I’m covered in tiny colorful bugs!

I’m always hesitant to purchase button up shirts online since they almost never fit correctly. Hello, gaping buttons. Thank you, boobs. Buuuut when it comes to unique patterns I have a hard time resisting. Happy to report this button up fits like a dream. No gaping, it’s long and isn’t too tight in the shoulders! I’m wearing a size medium, FYI. It’s also super breezy and lightweight. It’ll be a great transitional piece when Spring finally decides to show its face here in Ohio. I’m, clearly, super stoked on this purchase!

Happy Monday!
xoxo

what I’ve been wearing pt. 2

by Kaylah Stroup January 29, 2018

cleveland style blogger

Back again today with another ‘what I’ve been wearing’ round up! I’ve begun making more of an effort to get dressed on days I work from home in the hope that it helps me be and feel more productive. So far, so good! Here’s what I’ve been wearing…

dress / shoes

This dress is one of my FAVORITE recent finds. I’m a huge fan of how it fits, and I’m realizing how much I loooove when dresses have a sheer overlay. Reminds me a lot of this dress. I seriously cannot wait to be able to wear this bad boy outside without a coat or tights. Nothing beats a dress that doesn’t need any other accessories to look amazing!

shirt / skirt / shoes

Another easy to wear outfit – this top + skirt. I can’t wait to wear this with just a pair of sandals!

shirt / overalls / socks (similar)

I liked the shirt featured in the outfit previous to this one so much that I went on a hunt for similar things and ended up with this one. I hit the jackpot! Under $15, a bunch of different colors available, and it’s absolutely perfect for wearing under overalls – something my shirts do a lot of! Definitely going to need to pick up a black one.

cardigan / shirt / skirt  (similar) / shoes

Pattern clashing LIKE A BOSS! I bought this shirt thinking it’d look cute with a pair of jeans. When I tried that on though it just didn’t feel like me. Paired with a polka dot skirt and a (mostly) solid colored cardigan it’s perfect. Super stoked about this outfit! Not super stoked about those roots though. Eeek! It was one of those times when it took seeing them in photos to realize just how grown out they were. Remedied that reeeeal quick after noticing. Wish my hair would just grow in green!

shirt / jeans

This outfit reminds me of New Orleans since I had just purchased this shirt right before visiting there last year. I fell in love with this outfit and was so excited to wear it while on vacation. It’s simple but it’s very comfortable (seriously, these jeans are like jammies!) and always takes me right back to that awesome trip. I love when an outfit holds memories.

what I’ve been wearing…

by Kaylah Stroup January 16, 2018

pin / cardigan / overalls / slippers (similar)

One of the bad things about working from home is how easy it is to just stay in pajamas all day long. I know it’s cute to joke about how great it is but honestly, after a while it starts to wear on you. Actually getting dressed, and putting some effort into my appearance does wonders for my productivity, and of course, my self-esteem. Plus I really do enjoy putting together cute outfits. I’ve been pushing myself to get dressed as often as possible lately instead of just keeping on my warm jammies when I head to my computer each morning. It’s been great. I feel like in the last half of a month I’ve been more productive than I was all of November and December combined.

Toward the end of last year I got really into taking, and sharing outfit photos again here on the blog. It was the first time in years that I actually felt motivated to do it! Back in 2012-13 I was sharing two or three outfit posts per week. Sadly, I fell out of the habit. Looking back through those photos makes me so mad that I ever stopped. I truly do love taking them, and being able to look back on my own personal style evolution is a blast.

The weather here in Ohio has been far too cold to hang out outside with the sole purpose of taking cutesy photos but luckily my apartment makes a pretty great backdrop. I’d rather be outside but honestly, I’m just happy to be taking outfit photos again! I definitely plan on heading back out for full outfit posts as soon as the weather breaks but for now you can count on  these ‘what I’ve been wearing’ round ups to be a regular feature on the blog!

Sugarhill Boutique sweater

All the animal prints!

shirt / jeans (similar) / shoes

One year ago I’d have probably considered this shirt out of my comfort zone. It’s not a typical fit I’d choose but I am seriously just obsessed with this whole outfit. Can’t wait until it’s warm enough to wear it out of the house without putting forty nine layers over top.

sweater (similar) / dress / shoes

Another style I might typically not go for. This tight bodycon dress is a bit out of my comfort zone alone but paired with an oversized cardigan it’s perfect! It feels sexy yet still cozy.

alien sweatshirt, amazon fashion, green hair, ootd, cleveland fashion blog

sweatshirt / jeans (similar) / shoes

Pink is my new favorite color. Could you tell? Also, I think Professor might be an alien from Saturn. More on that here.

grace karin dress, green hair, punky colours, dainty squid

dress / shoes (similar)

This dress could seriously not fit better. I absolutely love the length and the three quarter sleeves. If only it came in stripes…

cardigan / dress / belt was a gift / shoes

Back of the closet find of the year goes to this dress! I don’t know why I haven’t been wearing this thing constantly. Such a flattering cut and fit.

feelin’ myself

Every year I do a round up of my favorite outfits from the year, and of course, I’m back to do it again this year. I had lots of favorites this year. Despite a slow start, I’ve been feeling pretty on top of outfit posts recently. It finally feels like I’ve gotten back into the swing of them for the first time since …2013? Back then I was posting them at least twice a week which definitely hasn’t been the case in quite a while. Maybe 2018 will be the year?! They’re just silly outfits, nothing ground breaking, but I really do love taking them. I love documenting my style, and it’s fun to watch my hair change – even if I did keep it the same color most of the year! Who am I!?

some loooovely outtakes from 2017

In 2017 I realized how much I love rompers, wore more black and white striped items of clothing than I can count, and even found a ridiculous beetle covered dress! I continued to rely on my ‘good side’ making it appear as there is always something interesting to the right of me. I discovered a new favorite place to take outfit photos (all but two photos in this post were taken in the same spot!) and finally got comfortable enough in front of the camera that I let Jeff take my photos for the blog. Golly, what help that’s been!  I talked a bit about sharing outfit posts can be scary and even wrote about a little note to self about beauty. It was a good year!

what I wore : put a seagull on it

by Kaylah Stroup December 14, 2017

the dainty squid, kaylah doolan, ohio blog, cleveland, fashion blog pistachio palladium boots what I wore, the dainty squid overalls, black overalls, the dainty squid, kaylah doolan, green hair

details
hat – stolen from Jeff
glasses – BonLook
coat – Columbia rain jacket
sweater – ???
overalls – Charlotte Russe
boots – Palladium Boots (depending on your size & what color you choose in this style they’re wildly inexpensive for what you’re gettin!)

Another overall outfit. What can I say? They’re kind of my jam! At least this one doesn’t include a striped shirt though. Ya know, like the other four times I’ve shared an outfit featuring overalls. See – 1, 2, 3 + 4. I guess, like they say ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ but I think the end of that quote is ‘put a bird on it!’

This outfit feels a bit different from everything else I share. A bit more utilitarian than most, I suppose. I definitely do love dressing up but let’s be real here – it’s not an every day thing. I’m equal parts ‘girly girl’ and ‘tom boy’. I love frilly dresses but I also really love my overalls. Something like this is what you’d most likely catch me in if you saw me out and about. I’m especially digging beanies these days. A beanie and braids have been my lazy day go-to! Probably the only good thing about cold weather.

what I wore : polka dotted

by Kaylah Stroup December 5, 2017

cleveland blogger, ootd, green hair, kaylah doolan what I wore, dainty squid, cleveland fashion blog, ohio blogger

details
glasses – BonLook
dress – polka dot dress via Amazon
lapel pin – Weird Beard Candle Co.
cardigan – layering wrap with hood via Target
purse –  foldover clutch via Amazon
socks – Target
shoes – oxfords by White Mountain

For the longest time I avoided cardigans that weren’t short, and fitted. My idea of something different was same cardigan, new color. I actually own six or seven of this cardigan, no joke. It’s still a favorite. But then I discovered a love of long cardigans. First of all, they’re usually much warmer which is important when you’re a freeze baby. Aaaand they can totally save a too short dress which is important when the majority of dresses made in 2017 are too short for your frame! This dress is fine when I’m standing up straight but basically if I move at all you’re guaranteed to see some booty! Target claims this cardigan is a robe for lounging around the house in but I say it’s perfect for saving short dress and making them into the coziest outfit ever!

outfit photos are v. serious business, obviously.

what I wore : black + camel

hat – thrifted
cardigan – Coco Cardigan c/o Moorea Seal
lapel pin – Kind is Cool c/o Moorea Seal
dress – striped dress by Paris Sunday
purse – camera shaped bag via Amazon
shoes – Loly in the Sky – a pink pair here!

Sheath dresses are my new favorite thing. I had to google the different between “sheath” and “shift” just to be clear, but yeah, it’s a fact – I love sheath dresses. I hesitated buying this dress for so long because in the past I’ve been so loyal to fit and flare dresses thinking that those were what I was most comfortable in but, y’all, I am definitely feeling myself in this! It has such a nice weight to it too, making it feel incredibly appropriate for cooler weather. I absolutely love when I finally pull the trigger on an online purchase and it becomes of my favorite, and most worn pieces!

Hope you’re having a lovely week!

what we wore : no bones about it redux

by Kaylah Stroup October 31, 2017

skeleton dog costume, green hair, skeleton leggings

details
hoodie – Target (little boys section, last year)
sunglasses – Claudia via Foster Grant
leggings – skeleton leggings via Hot Topic (on clearance now!)
shoes – saddle shoes via Amazon
Klaus’ outfit – Target (two years ago)

First and foremost,

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Klaus and I actually did this same thing two years ago. (Here!) Buuut I love that post so much I wanted to do it again. Even though he’s worn this little costume almost to smithereens, it still makes me smile every time I see him in it. I was even hoping Target would be carrying them again this year so I could buy a replacement. Alas, no luck there.

Lots of things have changed since that first post, most noticeably my hair length! In the time since I also managed to get my hands on a skeleton sweatshirt that fits really nicely which is kind of a huge deal! Don’t mind if I do, Target’s little boys section! We’re still the same cool bony buds though.

what I wore : pink, black + green

socks – Target
shoes – c/o Zenzee

I am SO stinking excited that it’s finally jacket weather. I mean, who isn’t!? Don’t answer if it’s you. I’ve had both this shirt and jacket for quite a few months now but rarely worn either. Any time I’d go to add either to an outfit there was just something that ended up working better. Paired together though, I can not think of a more perfect combo! I’ve seen comic panels where a sweaty character is asked why they don’t take off their coat and their response is that it makes the outfit. Now, I totally get it. I even snapped a few photos without the jean jacket but opted not to share them because all these pieces work so well together. On a totally different subject, y’all, my haaaair! Yesterday, in my project 365 post, I mentioned feeling a bit disconnected from my long hair. Like, I’ll look in the mirror and feel like “Woah! Where did this come from!?” I guess it’s from years and years of having short hair. I tried for so many years to grow it but always ended up getting it cut on a whim. Literally, this might be the longest hair I’ve ever had! It may have been a similar length when I was like five but not since then. I definitely struggle with finding the motivation to style it every day but can I tell you something? I feel so dang pretty when I actually take the time to do something other than throw it all up in a bun. I know some day I’ll end up cutting it, and heading back to short hair but right now I can’t even imagine. I feel like the most magical cartoon princess with this hair. I dig it, big time.
xoxo
